Booked an afternoon snorkel tour to Molokini. Showed up 1/2 hour prior to scheduled departure as advised. No one around to check people in until 1/2 hour after departure, when they finally told us they had a problem with the boat that they needed to fix. Didn't tell us what was wrong but we later found out they could not get one of the engines to start. Finally left the dock 1 1/4 hrs after scheduled time. Then once we were on board, we found out we were not going to Molokini because they said the winds were too strong. Once we were on board it was too late to back out. So we went to a cove about two miles from the harbor that we probably could have accessed from the highway without paying for a boat ride. So we got one hour of snorkeling before they called us back to the boat. The whole time on the boat they were trying to sell us pictures at $45 a pop (NO THANKS!). As we were returning and approaching the harbor, captain Carlos (truly a Hawaiin name) kept haranguing us about tipping and telling us how much we were expected to tip (as though the boat ride was not expensive enough). They passed out little billfold things that you get your bill in at a restaurant, expecting us to put cash or a credit card in there for their tip. Cheap ass hot dogs and bags of chips were served on the way in (whoopee). My advice: CHOOSE A DIFFERENT COMPANY TO GO WITH. ps: These guys did not even mention Maui's sunscreen law which bans all sunscreens that are not mineral based. You would think that a snorkel tour boat whose livelihood depends on the health of the Ocean would at least give it a mention. I have been on other boats that actually provide the sunscreen to ensure everyone is wearing the right stuff. Not these guys, they could care less about the ocean, they just want your money. read more

Date of Tour: March 6, 2025. Really a great snorkeling adventure while on Maui. The Captain and Crew are fantastic; knowledgeable, attentive, and know how to have a good time. Joe the photographer is like aqua man and really took some awesome photos of my family while snorkeling. I highly recommend the Malolo for snorkeling. The staff is super helpful and vigilant. I felt safe in the water around them. Our captain brought us to Coral Gardens and we saw lots of fish. My equipment worked very well. My mask was great. No leaks at all. I will definitely go again when I have the opportunity. read more

It was okay. Underwhelming compared to most of the other snorkeling tours I have taken in Hawaii. They asked us to come early at 1230 but they didn't show up until 1 so we just waited with all the other patrons for them to show up. Of the three hour trip, 2 hours were travel. So you don't get to snorkel very much, just 1 hour at one location. Lunch was not great. My kids thought the hot dogs were weird looking and refused to eat them. No entertainment or educational component during the long two hours of travel. We did see a whale from the boat! I think there are better tour options. read more

We purchased the 3 hour snorkeling trip at Boss Frogs for Malolo Charters to Molokini for the afternoon 1PM trip. They took us the coral gardens instead. When asked the captain first said the coast guard has a wind advisory and we cannot go there. When multiple guests asked the captain again why we were not going to Molokini and when was the last time they visited the real truth was revealed. He said this is a starter/cheaper fare ($89 per adult + taxes) and we can only take you to Coral gardens. He also stated you need to purchase 5 hour package to visit Molokini for snorting. This was not revealed at the time of booking and they trick you into this. We were mislead. Beware before making your reservation at Boss Frogs in Maui. read more

This is a rather small boat with only half the open area on the front of the boat so I was not sure how it'll go. We were one of the last to board so we sat in the back under the captain's "box". As I was looking around and saw half of the boat is enclosed, I was weary of the view... NOT YO WORRY!! One you are out there and start spotting the whales, the captain makes sure to go as close as allowed and ensure we all get a chance to have a good view. Besides, the whales pop up from all direction so even if you miss one sighting you will see another one right behind you. We were lucky to have one very close encounter when they came towards us and fluted (the best photo attached). I moved to the very back where the small bench on each side and had a great view throughout. These guys are better than any other whale watching I've gone because the captain is VERY knowledgeable and kept telling us stories and sharing whale knowledge throughout. I really appreciated that. It makes or breaks the experience in my opinion. We traveled from Oahu just so we can catch it in season this year and glad we did!! My hubs are kicking himself for missing this trip. I'm gonna make sure we come back to them next year hopefully earlier in the season. Thank you guys for having such an affordable cruise with the best experience!! P.S. tip them well as they totally deserve it and especially because they make the ticket so affordable!! P.P.S. Just so you know, on Oahu, and probably on Maui too, the other whale watching cruises charge as much as $100 per person for MUCH LESS experience (all I got was a silent boring ride with just spouting on Oahu.). This is a negative that has come up. On Sundays They say on the phone it is Molokini only today. They told me that when we went last month and it was repeated when I sent three guests this morning. Both times, the boat also went to the turtle cove where the vis is poor. The captain is in charge, But it was a different captain. And today they said they only had enough food for one sandwich each on the trip back. I don t know if I can use this crew again. 100 ft vis at Molokini was the only reason to be aboard. I think I see a pattern. The other six days Are trips for both destinations. I was hoping for a Special Molokini experience for my guests since I footing the bill and bragged on the experience. Today the boat was full of kids, more than 20. Not always a even ratio adults /kids mix. The owner has replied promptly And I say Mahalo for that. Sir, Just so you are aware, over our 4 phone calls I and my guest were told the Sunday morning trip us Molokini only. So the misunderstanding starts with your crew, male and female. Our family of 4 went out on the Molokini Tour. We stopped there for 45 min and the Captain said we needed to leave. I thought "what the hell". They then took us to an area with fantastic snorkeling and lots of sea turtles. It was called Turtle town. So glad the captain got us out of Molokini and on to calmer waters. Boat Staff was very kind and helpful. We left them a $40 tip they were so good. As for sea sickness.....several blew chow. Always happens.......usually me but not this time!!! Malolo is just a terrific whale watching vessel highly preferable to the many larger boats. The experience is so close to the water and the whales, it can't be beat! I honestly believe the whales like this little boat. A few years ago I was fortunate enough to be mugged by a mother and calf who used the Malolo ( named Frogman at the time) as protection from unwanted male attention for over an hour. It was one of the best hours of my life! For this whale watch, Captain Carlos and crew members, JJ and Boz, were super friendly, helpful, gracious and whale knowledgeable. I only wish Boss Frog scheduled more frequent whale watches on the Malolo all season long. Not just at the end of the season. It is an unforgettably intimate way to see some whales. The snorkeling itself was a great experience since we hadn't been to Molokini or "Turtle Town" before - we even got lucky and saw dolphins on our way back to the harbor. However, the Malolo's false advertisement of serving a "tropical breakfast" and "deli lunch" is what makes this rating a 3/5. We received a Costco muffin with an Activia yogurt for breakfast. For lunch, a pre-made basic turkey sandwich and chips - It did the job since we were hungry. Perhaps this is what they serve in light of Covid and wanting to keep everything simple, but that should have been what was listed in the information you see when purchasing your ticket. The advertisement for this excursion was very misleading which made the trip a bit disappointing for what we paid and were expecting, and it was a bit humorous to me that the captain kept pushing for us all to tip the crew generously. I couldn't help but feel like we were getting the short end of the stick aboard the Malolo. Overall, an underwhelming experience - I probably wouldn't recommend this excursion to a friend. read more

We booked a morning snorkeling trip through Viator. Overall, we enjoyed the snorkeling experience. Getting to see the fish at Molokini crater and the turtles at Turtle Town was pretty memorable. There are a few things I would recommend to others: 1) come early!! Park at the aquarium! Do your consent waivers ahead of time!! We arrived just before 6 to check in at Boss Frogs. Only 1 family was there before us. We check in quickly and were able to get on the boat quickly. This ensured we could get a good spot on the boat. (The crew said the normal capacity of the boat was about 60 but due to Covid, they were limiting it to 49 people. The boat was still pretty full!) 2) the food is very basic - we chose this snorkeling trip since we didn't want to pay the premium for open bar. For breakfast, we got a Costco blueberry muffin, an activia yogurt and our choice of drink - there's pog juice, coffee, soda and water). For lunch, most people got a sandwich with chips. Since we requested the vegetarian option, we got a simple salad with balsamic dressing and chips. The crew made mixed drinks (paid bar) but I was a bit seasick so we didn't want drinks. Overall, the meal options were sufficient but very basic, nothing special. 3) the trip is long!! Going from shore to Molokini, to turtle town and back takes a long time!! Several people had varying levels of seasickness. We didn't realize it would take so long just to get to the snorkeling spot and back, but I just had a mild stomach upset, so we were fine. 4) the overall snorkeling experience was good! We got to see fish at Molokini (less than we thought, but lots of different kinds and colors) and turtles at Turtle Town (have to swim a bit and look around, but there were some resting deeper and a few swimming around). My husband liked Molokini crater better because the water was so clear. I liked turtle town since I was mesmerized by the turtles. We both agreed that this is an experience we would do again if we come back to Hawaii. 5) In OUR opinion, you do not need a wetsuit. The crew rents them out for $10, and really pushes them. At first, I was nervous about the water being cold, but the water temp is similar to the beach water - it's a bit chilly when you first get in (just go for it) and after a minute, it's super comfortable. It took me longer to acclimate to the snorkeling mask (and I got a mouthful of salty water a couple times) but overall the experience is doable. My husband and I know how to swim, but we used a noodle to swim around (the crew provides noodles and snorkeling mask and fins). 6) OVERALL - a good experience! Be prepared and come early, don't have high expectations for the food. Bring sunscreen, jacket/clothes for after, and towels. If you get seasick, get the scopolamine patch or Dramamine (I kind of wish I had). Enjoy!! No read more

*NOTE* If you experience seasickness or motion sickness, this may not be the trip for you unless you take Dramamine (which the crew provides). I haven't gotten seasick in years and wasn't concerned at all going in, but this trip triggered my seasickness badly. Beyond that major hiccup, this was a near 5 star experience. What to bring: Sunscreen (you'll need to apply 30 mins prior to going into the water to ensure you don't harm the coral reefs), clothes to change in and out of, towel, waterproof camera if you have one. The crew provides the snorkeling gear, flippers, and various flotation devices (belt floatie, noodle, body board, and life jackets) for free. You can rent wetsuits for $10. Travel time: We spent nearly an hour getting to Molokini Crater and spent 45 minutes snorkeling there. Then we traveled about 20 minutes to Turtle Island and spent an hour there. The boat ride back to the dock was about another hour. The captain and crew shared a lot of interesting and thoughtful facts about Hawaiian history and folklore to help make the time pass. They also answered tons of questions about turtles and the other animals on the island. What to expect: A friendly, patient, and fun crew who obviously loves what they do and provides helpful, clear instructions. Food that will get you through the trip (muffin and yogurt for breakfast and a sandwich and chips for lunch) and the option to purchase $3 alcoholic beverages on the way back. Lined up to go the boat...No Social Distancing. On boat out of the harbor, the captain announced that all passengers needed to wear masks. Some passengers did NOT wear a mask. Ditto for the return to the harbor. My companion asked for a mask with optical enhancement, but the crew did not provide a mask for her. There was no help getting into the water from the stairs at the front of the boat. Crew in the water did not point out fish or other 'wildlife'. Getting back on the boat there was a current and again no assistance from the crew. I actually helped some passengers with their noodles. Biggest disappointment....BOILED hotdogs. Good Maui chips. We left the harbor with 2 other boats which out paced us. Then when one baby whale was spotted near the surface, we parked for too long. When an adult whale that was very active was spotted we were anxious to get closer, but once again the captain put putted along at a painfully slow pace. I saw better whale activity from the road. I highly recommend this snorkeling trip if you're looking for something for only a few hours. The cost alone was about $100 less than the over 5 hour trips. We went to the crater and saw a large amount of colorful fish. By the time we were called back to the boat, I was pretty exhausted. They also gave a hot dog and a bag of chips which was enough for me. They do serve drinks as well both alcoholic and regular. Booked this tour last minute, and although the lady who booked our snorkeling tour over the phone was kind of rude, the trip itself was fun. Staff were incredibly nice and friendly but my husband and I did get sea sick. TIP: Grab a seat on the lowest level if you're prone to sea sickness!! Husband and I also decided to do Snuba at the last minute and regretted it. Although our instructor was great, the harness/cable kept me from exploring and seeing things we wouldn't see if we were just snorkeling. When booking with this charter from Boss Frog, I was told it was a small group of twelve and there was two seats left but when we arrived the boat was filled pack. We were told that it was 1 feet of sitting space per person. Do not expect any wiggle room if your able to get a seat on this charter and expect to feel like a chicken in a coop. I understand the more people on a boat, the larger the profit for them but it doesnt give their customers the best experience. Its not fancy like other charters but we were able to see lots of fish and a few green sea turtles so the you do get what you paid for. read more
