I have had wonderful food at the Maltby Cafe in the past. However, I am in no hurry to return. Today I had the biscuits and gravy..meh, just ok. Biscuit was large, but dry and tasteless. The sausage gravy was just ok. I ordered a cinnamon roll to go, as this is one the items the Cafe is famous for. I am unable to cut the cinnamon roll with a butter knife, it is so dry. It is dry, stale and tasteless and swimming a pool of almond flavored icing. $10.99. It will go into the trash. The service was fine, the servers were very, very busy. The table was missing knives and spoons. We did get silverware upon request. Coffee was delicious and free flowing. The pre-determined tip of 22%-25% or 30% was a surprise. You must choose a custom amount if you wish to choose 20%. Come on Maltby Cafe- I know you can do better. read more

I really wanted to try this place after it was voted the best brunch on King 5 Evening. On New Year's Day, this place was packed. We waited 40-45 minutes for 2 seats at the bar and we were ready to order. I got the Maltby French toast and my friend got the chicken fried steak. The French toast was amazing. I've never had creme fraiche with French toast before but that made it a much more decadent experience. I devoured half the plate pretty quickly. The chicken fried steak was another story. The steak itself was in the bottom half of all chicken fried steaks that we've experienced. It was not crispy. My friend also was not impressed with the bland mushy potatoes. They needed a lot of hot sauce to make them palatable. The "toast" or biscuit in this case had a texture that I did not like at all. I like my biscuits buttery/flakey with a little color on the outside. This one was a dense pale mass with a uniform texture that more resembled bread than flakey pastry. I opted not to eat more after the first bite. I would come back for the French toast but not with a long wait. I would not order the chicken fried steak again but give something else a try. This place is out of the way so I would only be by again if I happen to be in the area but it's not worth making a trip out here for brunch. read more

I went for a scramble with bacon, spinach, potatoes, and a bunch of other stuff and it was top 3 all time. And I cannot forget to mention our server Nick. I've been coming here since I was a kid. It's nostalgic for so many people. Looking back, not much has changed about this place over the years and that's what makes it so great. The staff are all soo friendly and make you feel like family. This place is always packed but the service is never lacking. You will almost always have water filled in your cup and your coffee topped off often. They do not take reservations so always plan to get there early because there is almost always a 30+ minute wait. Only complaint of this place is they announce the names over what seems like the oldest speaker so you feel like you are watching Charlie Brown with the muffled sounds of names coming out of it. The food is delicious and is in giant portions. Very country style/comfort food focused. They are known for their cinnamon rolls which are the size of your hand. Do yourself a favor and get one to go. I know that the Maltby Cafe is a hotspot but I was really happy to find that the wait on a Saturday morning at 9:30 was only about 10 minutes. I imagine it gets busier later but this wasn't bad at all. I met up with three friends for breakfast and everyone was really excited to try the famous cinnamon roll. I had ordered one on my previous visit and remembered being overwhelmed by the size of it. Since I was leaving town in a couple of days, I knew that I wouldn't have time to eat the cinnamon roll (especially with my long list of other must-haves) and decided to go for a less carb heavy meal of an omelet with deli turkey and cheese. I had to specially request the turkey as it's not on the menu but I noticed that they do offer a turkey sandwich and I was happy that they substitute the turkey in place of ham or bacon as I don't eat pork. The omelet was exactly what I was looking for. I had noted in my previous review that the breakfast potatoes were amazing but I didn't find them to be quite as good this time around. I think they were less crispy than I remembered but still had good flavor. I chose the toast for my bread side and loved the raspberry jam. It was so good! However, we only had to wait 15 minutes for a table for four, which was surprisingly nice since there was constantly a wait at the door and every table being occupied. They don't take reservations, so get here early if you don't want to wait for a table. (However, it's worth the wait.) Maltby Cafe's menu was large, with several different breakfast items to choose from, in addition to lunch entrees, depending on what time you go. The weekend specials include eggs benedict, which come with not one, not two, but three poached eggs on their handmade biscuits. DEE-VINE. That's what I ordered, the country eggs benedict with ham and I can't ever order anything else because it was the best eggs benny I've ever had! The benedict sauce had a lot of lemon flavor, which I loved, and the fact that they use biscuits over english muffins is a fucking win right there. The biscuits made in house were fluffy and soft, just how biscuits should be! And I was hesitant to order this particular eggs benny dish because it has ham, which I'm not a huge fan of, but the thick, country ham they use that's right off the griddle had me thinking twice. Perfect dish. I took home leftovers and the next morning was marvelous. Although I say I can't order anything else other than the eggs benedict, I hear everything else is just as amazing. My friends all loved their meals, and they do have daily specials. I ordered a bloody mary with my entree, which included pickled asparagus and a thick ass cut of bacon. NOMS. Read on...We were sat immediately and served water and coffee as we looked over the extensive menu. I had difficulty picking out what I wanted because everything sounded so good! I settled on the scramble, potatoes and Maltby bread. EVERYTHING WAS OUTSTANDING. Our amazing server was hustling around and didn't miss a beat with all our requests. She was kind, attentive and remembered everything. She even brought the birthday girl a special treat with a candle in it. We got two cinnamon rolls to go and I'm back home eating my leftovers and the gigantic, epic cinnamon roll as I type this review. Do yourself a favor and eat here immediately, you will have zero regrets. I feel the need to address a few of the negative comments on here: 1. The bill doesn't "trick" or "cheat" the customers by giving you three reasonable options of tipping, 22%, 25% and 30%. If you have eyeballs, READ the options and make a CHOICE based on what you want to tip. I had to laugh that someone thinks this is trying to be sneaky when all you have to do is REAAADDD THE BILL. BEWARE you might have to read. I never sign or check a box without looking at it first, do you? You can easily WRITE in whatever lower or higher tip you want (like most places) Servers bust their bums to serve us and I always tip 25% plus so this was a non-issue for me and our appropriately tipping party. The way those servers worked it should have been 30%, 40% and 50% as the three options. 2. Tasteless food? Ya might want to get your tastebuds looked at by a medical professional because this is simply untrue. Furthermore, I find it strange this place has won countless awards year after year after year. I'm sure they earned them for their bland, stale food or maybe for their gravel parking lot. 3. The place is cramped, busy and the tables are too close together. DUH. It's located in the bottom of an old school house built in the early 1900's. During construction the crew did not account for this morphing into a cafe 50 years down the road for us to stuff our chubby faces. Sheesh, how rude. Yes, Maltbys is extremely busy because THEIR FOOD IS OFF THE HOOK. Be a responsible patron and PLAN AHEAD! We came early because we knew (EVERYONE Knows) how busy they are! So the tables are too close together? You want them to remove tables to make more space which would create longer wait times? Which is it people? 4. Too expensive, $16.95 for an omelette or a burrito! First off the burrito is the size of my thigh and was three meals in one $16.95/3 = $5.65 per serving. Even if your omelette only gave you two meals (it's more like three) that's $16.95/2 = $8.47 for someone else to cook you a farm-fresh omelette from scratch. Sounds like a heck of a deal to me! 5. Ugh! The parking lot is still gravel? I don't know about you but I don't go to restaurants for their parking lots, I never have and never will. In fact I don't care what the material is. It could be sawdust, cotton, duck crap for all I care. I'm interested in the food. 6. We've been coming here for 30 years and had one bad thing happen where the customer probably overreacted and now our long withstanding tradition is over!! Waaaah. Maltby Cafe is one of only two places to eat in the surrounding area and located comfortably off of the main road. It has plenty of free parking around the location and is wheelchair accessible from the back, close to the handicapped parking. This is nice. It has a very home cooked, family owned, classic American vibe from the outside and has a, in someone's home vibe on the inside. The atmosphere wasn't very fancy, but it was inviting. The menu was brief and included all the expected American breakfast and lunch classics. It did have a dessert and drink menu and a bar. Prices were very reasonable and portions were pretty large (including the kids menu). Service was pretty average. We were seated right away, but service was a bit slow. They are pretty popular so it made sense, but the servers were nice. Overall, it did feel a bit long, and not in terms of the food coming out. Just making progress in the dining experience sense. Food itself was plated pretty standard, the bread and bacon was great. Their chips were good, but could have used more salt. The burger patty was a bit bland and dry. It didn't carry the flavor of the burger itself and relied on the toppings. It could have used more condiments to be honest. The cinnamon roll was great, and very large. Gravy on the chicken fried steak is really tasty, and tastes great over the garlic mashed potatoes. The crème fraiche that's used on the Swedish pancakes is also really tasty (almost like a custard). My dad picked up a HUGE cinnamon roll and brought it home. He wanted to take a picture in front of the restaurant for his friend who's family used to own it. Small little place, but really cute and very popular amongst the locals. I've heard their food is good, but this review is just for their cinnamon roll. It was perfectly cooked, flaky and had a hint of what I thought was almond extract, but they say it was walnuts. I'm usually not a huge fan of raisins in pastries, but there were few in this one and I actually thought it was quite nice. The frosting was a powdered sugar base (I don't think there was cream cheese in it- although I could be wrong) and delicious. We zapped it in the microwave, per the staff recommendation. Helllllooooo! Maltby Cafe may be a hidden gem for most, but us snohomie locals know where to go for a great country time breakfast and a cinnamon rolls as BIG as your head. My fav breakfast is the Country Fried Steak and gravy. And I'm NOT a gravy fan. But their gravy is perfectly seasoned and always served oozy warm over the steak. They have fresh potato hash and a great fluffy biscuit and home made jam. I prefer their sourdough toast though. They have a large menu w many options. You cannot leave without either sharing their cinnamon rolls or taking one to go. I say share because we frequently will get one for 5-6 of us and can't finish it. Coffee isn't to shabby. It's in the basement of a great old building in the Maltby/ snohomish area. If you go mid week you may not have to wait. If you go on a weekend. The earlier you go before 1030-11am you shouldn't have to wait more than 30. But after churches let out be prepared to easily wait 45-90 mins. Worth the deliciousness. Staff is nice. Locally famous cafe, in the basement (narrow stair-filled entrance) of a decommissioned circa 1900 school gym. Hugely crowded on a Saturday morning, and the 15-minute wait we were told of when we checked in turned out to be rather an underestimate. However! Despite the crowds, despite the chaos, from the time we were seated at a table until our meals arrived (there were 4 of us) was no more than TEN MINUTES. That's not "until they took our order" or "until the drinks came." That's the FULL HONKING MEALS. Ten minutes. Both the wait staff and the kitchen deserve the highest praise for speed and efficiency, and the wait staff didn't rush us, either, though they had almost as much trouble hearing us in the ambient noise as we did them. And the food? Pretty good. This place is noted for its huge cinnamon rolls. It was indeed huge, and it tasted like ... a basic cinnamon roll. I couldn't resist ordering the "whole hog omelet," with bacon, sausage, and ham. (No snouts or trotters.) Meat was generously applied but a little burnt, and was tucked inside the (quite reasonably cooked) patty of eggs rather than scrambled in as I prefer. Can't say I was overcharged or underfed, but I'd just as soon have saved the half hour it took to drive here from where we were staying, let alone the further away most people in the Seattle area would have to take. read more

It is a favorite of the queen. 2) Each egg is handpicked and imported from a open range farm in Argentina. The chickens they come from are a rare breed, and getting their eggs is no easy task. 3) The bacon has won more national awards than any other restaurant in the United States. It currently holds 7 titles in the Hogfest, the international bacon competition held in Geneva annually. 4) Their waffles are made from wheat flown in from Spain. Side note, the waffle maker they use was given to them as a gift from Betty White. Seriously, ask the staff. Been here a few times for breakfast now and recommend checking it out. Tried the cinnamon roll, salmon and regular benedicts, chicken fried NY steak, both types of pancakes, and sausage breakfast. We split the giant cinnamon roll as a starter for 4 people and it was more than enough for us. It's sweet, but not crazy sweet, and has some random raisins inside. Worth a try for the novelty at least. The benedicts are served on their fluffy biscuit instead of an English muffin with a side of potatoes. The eggs and sauce are perfectly cooked, but I only recommend getting the original. The salmon version isn't lox and is actually salmon fillet that's smoked until it's dried out. If it was still moist, it would be great, but it's way too dry. Pancakes are both good. My favorite was the swedish, which is way thicker than any other swedish I've had but still good. Ask for some Marionberry jam to go with it. Chicken fried NY steak is pretty good, but it's basically just a deep fried steak, not reminiscent of a tender chicken fried steak. Overall, come check this place out, just get ready having trouble finding parking and a long wait to get seated because it's so popular. read more

OMG! Best BACON I have ever had! No kidding I am a bacon nut just asks any of my friends. Now I like a good breakfast place/diner. This place rings all the bells. My inlaws took me here to show off. They eat almost no other place for breakfast or brunch. They were right to be proud of this place. I have some perfect eggs, awesome fruit, and BACON. Did we order an extra side of BACON? I did almost overdo the bacon. The staff was delightful, the food was some of the best home-cooking styles, and a family-style atmosphere one is always looking for. Not sure how long this place has been in business but what a great place. Stopped after we had been to Flower world and it did not disappoint. Huge menu, I think they only have breakfast and lunch but they serve breakfast until three. Portions are huge and the prices reasonable. My friend had a half size spinach salad that had all sorts of goodies in in, she was only able to eat half and took the rest home. I had a grilled veggie sandwich on this amazing bread. Choice of sides are handcut fries or potato salad or you can have fruit, tomato or cottage cheese for a bit more. I brought half mine home for tomorrow. Looked at the people having breakfast and they are huge. Not sure how anyone can eat all that. Not just down the street from Auburn but if we're in the neighborhood we'd certainly go back. read more
