My boyfriend and I arrived at 6:48am on a Saturday morning anticipating a line. Minutes later, the crowd began showing up. If you're not an early bird, this is probably not your place. My boyfriend ordered the chicken fried steak with the Maltby bread. My boyfriend loved the gravy on the chicken fried steak. I thought it was a tad too rich. The toast was top notch. I ordered the California scramble with the biscuit. The scramble was delicious, although it was 75% toppings and 25% eggs. The biscuit was flavorless. I liked the potatoes; my boyfriend thought they should be crispy. My boyfriend went rogue and ordered the cinnamon roll, which is big enough to feed a small army. It had a nice hint of orange. Service was remarkable--friendly and expedient. The restaurant was warm and nicely decorated for Christmas. My husband and I went to breakfast here and had a wonderful time! Love the atmosphere, felt very homey/grandma's kitchen. The staff were all very friendly and genuinely seemed happy to be there. Avoid the French fries! A friend and I have dropped by for lunch several times on our way to Snohomish. Their sandwiches are very good, with nice strips of turkey. The potato salad is also very good, with chunks of red potato, and celery. But, on my most recent visit, I ordered the French fries with my sandwich and they were inedible -- soggy, thin slices of potato in a pool of oil. This is my absolute favorite breakfast restaurant in western Washington. The restaurant is in the basement of a historic building in Maltby and it's always busy. Its weathered wooden exterior with green accents are a welcome sight for the weary traveler needing refreshment. For those in the know, Maltby Cafe is great for their breakfasts, and it is not uncommon to see a long line forming out the door as folks wait for a table in their basement dining room. They don't do reservations. What I come here for are the Oktoberfest special meals! Every year, they do a fabulous Oktoberfest tribute with different specials every day for 1 week, served with a house-made warm saurkraut that I adore. The hype and prices are completely unwarranted. The parking lot is a tiny gravel lot with no other nearby overflow parking. We waited almost 40min for our food order even though we were there before 9am. The egg dishes were fine, but there is an egg surcharge price due to the current macro economic situations. The buttermilk pancakes were really tough because of all the leavening, and didn't have much flavor and needed the maple syrup. The biscuits were dry as heck, and not very tender. As long as you stick to the protein dishes, and the potatoes you should be fine. Service was great, but I'm not sure I would fight for parking and then wait the huge line just for a mid-meal that's a tad overpriced. read more

We finally did it! We finally made it to the Maltby Cafe! After riding by on the motorcycle and always say "we need to stop there sometime!" We FINALLY did! And it was WELL WORTH the wait! In life and on the waitlist! :) So many friends have raved about this Underground "Breakfast" Club ;) and boy, were they right to do so! The service was absolutely excellent! We had a whole team of people setting our table and getting us coffees, and refills, bringing us extra creams! We had the absolute treasure of a woman, Katie, serve us! She was equipped with an infectious smile and kindness! The Serving Team at Maltby was so personable and social, and made you feel apart of the experience! :) NOW! The food! *drooling* there menu is ORIGINAL, lots of amazing options. Of course, I had to try their Homemade Corned Beef Hash and HOLLANDAISE sauce! Wow! Just amazing quality hash, the beef was oh so tender, the potatoes were fresh cut red potatoes but slices into thick sticks (really nice touch) and the HOLLANDAISE! My goodness! You could taste the lemon! It was just so fresh and delicious! Absolute treat! A hash the lives high up on my list! The gentlemen accompanying me also really enjoyed their scrambles. I finally made it to this locally famous cafe for breakfast. The restaurant is located downstairs of a large old building. The dining area was very spacious and could seat a large number of people. The service was excellent with friendly,smiling servers who diligently topped off our coffee and water. We went early on a Sunday morning and were seated right away. As the room filled up, the noise level became uncomfortably loud since the table near us had screaming and crying children. The food portion was large and the coffee was good. The breakfast potatoes were shaped like fries and were undercooked, so much so that my husband could not eat half of his breakfast. Mine were a little more cooked, but I also gave up eating it and took my breakfast home to re-cook the potatoes. We brought this to the waitress's attention and though she offered to bring out some fresh ones, we didn't have the time to wait. The place was getting quite full and loud. We had ordered their large cinnamon roll to go. It was impressively large; however, the frosting was not cream cheese and it tasted just sugary. Tried this place for the first time this month and boy was it amazing! Such a very very busy establishment and the food comes out in abundance. Ambiance is country/darm/vintage. A lot of their awards are posted through out the restaurant. Their cinnamon rolls are gigantic and they have great mimosas, coffees, and beverages. The menu can be overwhelming because there is a lot to choose from but if you're like me and you usually go with what you like, then it's pretty easy to read. I got the biscuits and gravy and my boyfriend for a breakfast sandwich. The couple next to us was shocked at how much food we had and especially when they saw our cinnamon roll. Needless to say but we had lots of leftovers to bring home. Their cinnamon roll has raisins. I am not a fan of raisins but my boyfriend likes raisins in his cinnamon roll. So he enjoyed it while I dodged the dried grapes. We got coffee and gummy bear mimosa (champagne, strawberry, lemonade, pomegranate). Overall, this is a a great breakfast spot for all! A group of 6 of us went on Sunday and got there around 12-12:30pm, and they were still busy! But we were seated quickly considering our party size. You have to go downstairs to get to the restaurant, and I'm not sure if they have an elevator. Tables seem a little close together but it's a homey diner feel, and I liked that. Our waitress was really nice, and it was good service. They didn't forget someone's hollandaise sauce in our group, but it wasn't too much a bother. Everyone's food was big portioned and delicious. My boyfriend raves about the biscuit. Our friends liked their breakfast burrito, and pancake, etc. I got a club sandwich and it was delicious. The bread was homemade, big, and sooo good. I took half home and it was delicious the next day. I chose the potato salad and it was good. Chunks of red potato like what they use for their home fries, and a creamy dilly dressing. Delish!! It's a gold standard for breakfast if you are anywhere within an hour (it's worth the drive & any wait - and there is usually a wait). We stopped in on a weekend, and were seating pretty quickly considering, well, it was a weekend. The place was packed. They have their homemade cinnamon rolls the size of a lunch plate (or more) near the hostess stand. If you haven't ever tried one, grab one for your table!! We started with Bloody Mary's....loaded with bacon, olives and celery. Very nice way to kick off a weekend breakfast. I ordered an omelette special, with chicken sausage, spinach, onion and a side of tomatoes. Very delicious and very hearty portions. Hubs had his standard, Chicken Fried Steak. Maybe it's different for breakfast, but I found the Maltby Café to be just OK for lunch. Service was friendly enough, but it took *forever* for our food to come. Just shy of an hour, and it wasn't that busy. Also strange was presentation: two of us got the same salad, and I saw another person at a nearby table with it as well. Each one looked like they were made in completely different kitchens. Biscuits were dry and cold. It was rare to have someone stop by for water, much less ask how we were doing or if we needed anything. Huge sized dish, very filling, a bit on the salty side for me but I still proceeded. Comes with the same country fried potatoes and a choice of toast & jam. So full! Maltby Cinnamon Roll: (to-go) We got this to take home for later, it is pretty big like a cake, filled the entire take out box. Made with nuts which is fine for me, it was pretty good and can see why this is popular here. Took us a few days to destroy it, cut it up and threw it in the microwave for like 30 secs and it was pretty darn good! Gooey, a lot of cinnamon flavor but just a gigantic monstrosity. Service was fine, they were definitely busy but periodically checked on us and able to get refills and clear out anything. Our server gal was awesome, she made sure to pack up our cinnamon roll and put on our table before they sell out of em'...thanks! I could make this review short and say great food and even better service, but it deserves so much more praise! The cafe had a great country kitchen atmosphere that made us Midwest transplants feel right at home. We never had to wait long for anything, our food came out hot, and it was absolutely delicious! Our waitress was on top of everything. She was constantly checking on us, refilling coffee, and making sure any questions we had were answered. 10/10 service. We did not get a cinnamon roll, but may have been the only ones. Everyone else seemed to have one, but we decided to save it for the near future! Commuter traffic I-5 North to 405 South was the usual exercise in patience to get to Canyon Park, then Thrasher's Corner, finally onward to Maltby. But wait there's more... the wait in the parking lot for the appointed time, then the additional wait in the small reception area. Note: wear masks and be mindful of social distancing! I really recommend stationing a dedicated staff member to deal with all the takeout orders piled up on the counter. Much to my dismay, this wasted time results with steamed entrees and cold sides. Sigh. Really puts the kitchen crew's efforts to shame. It's a bummer contents are disproprotionally crammed in a takeout box and providing no takeout utensils and napkins. I witnessed others frustration with this and totally sympathize. Thank goodness I am always prepared with stuff stashed in the car. All of us waiting while one guy monopolizes time at the register, seriously? Pay up and step aside! Having extra staff to oversee the prepaid takeout orders will prevent a choke point with folks backed up in the narrow wait area and stairs. Pro tips: *plan accordingly bring beverages, flatware, napkins, paper towel roll, wipes, whatever from home *pack your patience and avoid being hangry *order and pay ahead online *eat immediately if possible while hot, because steamed food and cold biscuits/ toast is subpar *Bonus - breakfast is served all day now, even on weekdays! *Buy Maltby bars and cinnamon rolls as holiday gifts I totally get it with changes due to the pandemic. I want Maltby Cafe to survive. But with the ordering system, the traffic, the additional unnecessary wait, the disappointment regarding how food was packed and served, no utensils or napkins....paid with tax and tip nearly $50?! Another point of reference for comparison is Voula's Offshore Cafe in Seattle, another long time destination. Similar monstrous breakfast fare, but packed nicely with utensils and napkins. Expedient whether ordered onsite or phoned in ahead, your food will served temperature appropriate. But again, with the time and cost spent? Just wanted to show my support and to celebrate The Homie's achievement. Will have to weather when the state restrictions are lifted or when we get past this pandemic entirely for future visits. All their food is incredible. My only problem is there's so much of it. and the setting is so unique!

I stopped by for the first time in many years in hopes of enjoying brunch with my wife and 3 kids. We arrived at the establishment around 11 am on a Saturday; my wife checked in and asked for a table for 5. They then proceeded to write on their waiting list, informing my wife that it would be a 20-min wait. 30 min elapsed, so I asked my wife to ask if the table is almost ready; they then in turn respond, "I remember you, but I'm sorry I forgot to write your name down... but we'll add your name to the list and try to push you guys through; it'll probably be about a 20-25 min wait". Mind you, we had already waited 30 min. Nevertheless, we decided to wait it out since we had already driven 45 min to eat here, and my three kids were starting to meltdown due to the long wait. I just don't understand how a reputable establishment can operate in such a manner. All in all, we waited a little over an hour to be seated, even with their "push" to rectify their mistake. Throughout this whole time of extended wait, we saw two to three other parties of 5 or more individuals proceed to be seated ahead of us. I will have to say, although the food was on par with other local favorites within the area and the waitress being pleasant, the waiting experience had such a poor execution of hospitality that I cannot rate this place any higher. This, unfortunately, will be the last time I dine here, but I'm sure this establishment will just brush off this review and continue business as always. read more

We were visiting friends from Monroe so we decided to get take out. I'm a fan of biscuits and gravy they are my go to for breakfast. Homemade biscuits with Massive gravy smothered all over. They needed more gravy. I was disappointed the gravy had zero flavor it was strange. Maybe the sausage didn't have much flavor and I had to add to salt to even get a remote good taste. The sausage patty wasn't good either so maybe that explains the gravy. Everyone else enjoyed their meals and my friends still say it's their favorite spot to go too so I'll give them 4 stars. Went on Saturday morning for brunch with my fam and some friends. Took us about 30 min for a table for 4 plus a high chair. We walked around little shops nearby until it was closer to our time and then waited outside to avoid the crowd inside. Once we got seated, service was great and fast. Our coffee never ran out and our food came out quickly. We got the chicken fried beef steak and the eggs Benedict. Everything tasted good although I wouldn't say that any of the food was the best. Potatoes were tasty and the fried steak was well breaded and cooked. For about $20 a plate, the portions were appropriate. We didn't get the cinnamon roll because no one wanted one that badly but they looked good and gigantic! Like the size of my face.
