I decided to check out Mama Grande's Cafe this morning (5/30/26). This was previously Varsity Inn in Seattle's Ravenna neighborhood. I had lived nearby for eight years, so it has been interesting seeing the changes in the vicinity since 1994. For me, it was the usual I-5S crawl from Shoreline until the NE 65th exit. I was able to find nearby street parking, warmly greeted upon entry, and was seated immediately at a four top with a nice view of the entire restaurant. I was provided a menu and large iced water upon seating. I decided to try their fresh squeezed orange juice, nicely chilled, while I perused their menu and featured specials. Nice and bright inside this corner restaurant, updated pleasant interior, and nostalgic music playing overhead. Various seating configurations: bar counter, few 2 tops, mostly 4 tops, and one that can seat maybe 8-10 as a group. Menu has a nice variety of food and beverages to select from for breakfast, brunch, and lunch during their business hours of 0700-1500. I was glad I arrived during that sweet spot by 0930, because definitely the dining room was mostly full shortly thereafter on this particular Saturday. I had interest in three breakfast selections, but narrowed it down to the Mama Grande's Breakfast. This came with 3 eggs (I did over easy), bacon or 2 housemade sausage links (sausage!), breakfast potatoes (can sub out for a salad), and toast (comes with melty butter, requested jam and received some blueberry compote). Opt for fresh fruit for $3. Overall for typical Seattle prices, this met the mark. Nicely prepared, tasty, and filling. I was especially pleased with the sausage links...perfectly grilled and not greasy. I know taste and experiences are subjective, but it was unfortunate to see two earlier posts with two & three stars, respectively. I view that as outliers versus the majority. I'd say easily for their first three months, this is worthy of four to five stars. I'd give it a 4.5 stars, because some of the breakfast potatoes were firmer than other pieces, the liquidy blueberry compote (thank goodness for a spoon), and omg the phlegmy, snorky customer with a book that was seated to my left. Of course, the latter is not attributed to the restaurant. I rounded up to five stars because of the personable service and clear collaborative upbeat FOH team. I also liked seeing on the receipt that 100% tips goes to the staff, none of this added random charges and fees that other places tack on. I do plan to return with others and also to take advantage of the senior special on Tuesdays through Thursdays for $13.99. Give it a try if in the Ravenna neighborhood! read more

We had a lovely time at Mama Grande's Cafe. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We were able to sit right away, but it was a full house, so I feel lucky that we were able to get a table so quickly. We ordered the Chilaquiles and Crab Meat Benedict, which were both delicious. There were a few vegetarian options for savory breakfast lovers, and many options for sweet breakfasts. I don't believe there were any vegan options. The coffee was what you'd expect at a diner-like cafe (nothing fancy), and they kept our mugs full and water glasses full the entire time. We took a little bit of leftovers home and they were kind enough to box it for us and write exactly what was in the box as well as the date. Overall great experience! read more

We hadn't popped in here since Varsity closed. Boy, are we sorry we waited! The ambience is lovely, the service is top drawer and the food is soooo good. I went with my mom. She had the basic breakfast, the eggs were done to perfection and the thick bacon perfectly crisp. It is not only the attention to detail but the execution, even on a very busy Sunday morning. Food came out fast and piping hot. I had the avacado toast on a thick seeded bread, with burrata and perfectly poached eggs. We shared the lemon ricotta pancakes which my mother deemed "divine!" They also have a great value 55+ menu during the week. Highly recommend and am so happy this is in our neighborhood! read more

Had the ube pancakes and they were so fluffy, and the flavor so delightfully robust. That ube ganache... Apparently they make everything from scratch !! I want to order it again and order fruit on the side to pile on too, but I am really intrigued by the portobello benedict so that's gonna have to wait The staff was really sweet and friendly, the atmosphere really chill and comfortable. This place is the old Varsity Cafe and it was mediocre T best. The service was great but the food was just ok. I had the chilaquiles and they were served with the traditional fried egg on top but they weren't anything special. It's hard when an old established eatery is replaced with something entirely different and not at improvement. read more

Came here for breakfast and everything was absolutely spectacular. From the moment you walk in, you can tell a lot of care and attention went into the design--it's beautiful and feels far more elevated than your typical neighborhood breakfast spot. The staff matched that same level of warmth and intention. Everyone we interacted with was genuinely kind, and the service throughout our meal was excellent. What really stood out was the thoughtful detail in the food. My veggie omelette had fresh herbs folded into the eggs, and when I asked for butter on the side for my toast, they even offered a choice between regular or herb butter--such a small but elevated touch. My toddler's pancakes came with a homemade fruit compote that had warming spices and was so good I ended up stealing it for my own toast. The pancakes themselves were delicious too. Casual spot for dinner, but the table placement was pretty terrible. They've packed way too many tables into a very small space. The first table we were given was right in front of the door on a cold, rainy day, so we asked to move. The second table was next to a pillar, and people kept bumping into it while squeezing through a narrow path that leads to more tables and the restroom. The wait time was also frustrating. We got our food about 30 minutes after ordering, and the most annoying part was that a table that came after us received their food first, which felt very unfair. I ordered the portobello egg benedict. It was okay the mushroom tasted quite sour. The eggs were good, but I wish they were a bit runnier. By the time I started the second benedict, the yolk had already solidified. The potatoes were good though. Service was very slow overall, and you also have to pay at the counter, which was a bit meh. Considering the service, I'd deduct a point. I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon. read more

The executive Chef came out personally to ask how our French cheese Omelette turn out. Best Omelette I have ever had!!!!! The Coffee as well zero acidity and very smooth. Fantastic! Went around 1230 on Sunday and there was zero wait. It's a small and cozy inside and there are lots of windows. The staff as super nice and friendly and nice to each other . Always nice to see I got chilaquiles and they were super tasty and filled me up. The sauce was flavorful and the onions were perfectly sweet. My friend got a salmon BLT and said it was delicious. food prices are slightly above average but the service is top notch. plan to get their early as they do fill up fast (not sure if they take reservations...except to reserve place for event) the employees are the friendliest as well as most of them are family. chef alex will come out and meet the diners guests and ask how they are doing. its a very warm place even if your a lone diner like me most times the staff makes a huge effort to get to know each person by name. most definitely a place to eat with your friends or family. read more

We waited a few weeks to try this place, hoping it would blow us away since we live a few blocks away. But it was honestly meh tastic. It took ages to get our food (we timed it at 26 minutes) and it wasn't very good when it arrived. The portobello mushroom eggs Benedict was so-so, definitely sour-tasting with ordinary potatoes. My husband's banana waffle thing was impossibly sweet. They removed the booths for some uncomfortable tables.
