They were still in the soft opening phase so they were getting the ropes of things and were in training. The cashier was very friendly and helpful. I'm literally writing this review while eating my food because I'm THAT disappointed. I tried Mama Hieu's for the first time yesterday, September 1, 2026. I ordered the $17 Original Garlic chicken box. The second I bit into that first wing, I thought, "Wow." I'm not exaggerating when I say it was probably the best chicken wing I've ever had. The crunch was incredible and completely different from any fried chicken I've had before. The garlic flavor was on point, the chicken tasted fresh, and I demolished the entire box -- chicken, veggies, everything. I was so impressed that I came back THE VERY NEXT DAY. Fast forward to today around 6 PM. I literally got into an argument with my girlfriend because I kept insisting she needed to try "the best chicken in the world." That's how much I hyped this place up after yesterday. I ordered another $17 box for myself and a $10 meal for her. Man... what a disappointment. Maybe one or two pieces between both orders had that beautiful fresh crunch from yesterday. The rest of the roughly nine wings were nowhere close. I don't know whether they had been sitting around and were re-fried or what happened, but the texture made them seem completely different from what I was served yesterday. Whatever the reason, that amazing crunch was mostly gone. And there I am looking at my girlfriend eating the chicken I had just spent all day hyping up, waiting for her to have the same "OMG" reaction I had yesterday. Nothing. She wasn't giddy. She wasn't impressed. And I couldn't even blame her because I was sitting there eating mine thinking, "What happened to the chicken from yesterday?" Yesterday: 10/10. I would've told everybody I know to come here. Today: That's what makes this so frustrating. I KNOW how good Mama Hieu's can be because I literally experienced it less than 24 hours ago. If my first visit had tasted like today's order, I probably never would've understood the hype. Restaurants have good and bad days, I get it. But when someone comes back the very next day because your food impressed them THAT much, spends over $30, and gets something noticeably worse, that's a consistency problem. And personally, once I'm spending $30+ on food, I'm not interested in gambling on whether I'm going to get yesterday's incredible chicken or today's disappointing chicken. There are group tables and tables for two, and parking is easy. The staff was friendly. Like their other location, the truffle parm tots were super fresh and crispy. The truffle aroma and flavor are intense. However, these tots were oddly too oily- it actually seeped out when I bit into them, and there was an oily aftertaste. My husband first had their wings before their first brick and mortar store, and this second store is a great addition :) I've only had the original and the spicy garlic, but both are packed with such amazing flavor and the wings come out so crispy and juicy! Their house box (which comes with 7 pieces of wings, 2 generous scoops of rice, and a side of pickled veggies) is such a great deal and I usually am able to split it into two meals, haha. I really love the chicken here and come back very often. However, one thing that really bothers and disappoints me is how extremely hot the water is in the restrooms. I've been to both of their locations, and the water temperature is the same at both. I usually wash my hands before and after eating, but the water is so hot that it's honestly uncomfortable to use. I'm wondering if this is intentional to save water or discourage customers from using too much water? I really enjoy the food here, but I hope they can do something about this.
