Dao Vien is simple, consistent Vietnamese food that isn't trying to be something it's not. It's my go-to when I can't decide which broken rice spot to hit. Big portions, steady flavors and a place that knows what it's good at. This time, I got the #31 with fried shrimp-stuffed tofu skin, grilled pork, shredded pork skin and steamed egg loaf over broken rice. It comes loaded with pickled cabbage and carrots, cucumber and scallion oil, with sweet fish sauce and broth on the side. Basically a Vietnamese buffet plate over broken rice, which is exactly why it works. They have an actual AYCE menu too, but I haven't tried it myself. The broken rice was cooked just right. Fluffy, moist and ready to soak up the sweet fish sauce, pork fat and scallion oil. That's when the plate stops being separate parts and turns into comfort food. The fried shrimp-stuffed tofu skin was crispy outside with big coarse chunks of shrimp inside. Good texture, good flavor and exactly the kind of protein that makes the plate feel special without yelling about it. The grilled pork was better than the photo makes it look: balanced marinade, not overly salty and enough char to remind you grilled pork needs to taste like it met fire. Not the most tender pork ever, but it was flavorful and satisfying. The shredded pork skin tied the plate together once you bless it with sweet fish sauce. Steamed egg loaf was solid too: soft, savory and doing quiet support work while the louder proteins got attention. The pickled cabbage/carrots had a nice crunch without being too sweet or too vinegary. The place was packed during lunch and moving fast with full Vietnamese auntie efficiency: nobody looked relaxed, there was zero emotional cushioning, but it ran like clockwork. Food took about 10 minutes, came out piping hot and service was good. Parking is busy since it's basically a strip mall lot, so don't expect the easiest quick in-and-out during lunch. Dao Vien is still one of my top 5 cơm tấm spots. The food here is quite good. There are few places that serve banh hoi dishes and this place does it well. The bo la lot is juicy and flavorful and the shrimp bean curd is light and crispy. Plenty of herbs and veggies to wrap and enjoy. My only complaint was the water to saturate the rice paper was lukewarm at best. Expect the place to be busy and loud. There are so many vietnamese restaurants in Westminster but this is the first AYCE one that I've seen. Basic AYCE is $24.99 and upgraded is $34.99. The restaurant is decent sized and pretty quiet. They offer high chairs which is a plus if you're coming with toddlers. Service is quick and the food is decent. Got their 5 meats and an order of their bo lat lop which was okay. Unfortunately, I won't be coming back. The biggest issue was that there was a hair in my food. When we brought it to the staff's attention, they simply said they would talk to the kitchen staff. They never offered to replace the meal, remake the dish, or do anything to make the situation right, which was really disappointing. On top of that, we were charged for iced teas that we never ordered. When we questioned it, we felt like we were being gaslit into believing we had asked for them instead of the mistake being acknowledged. Mistakes happen, but how a restaurant handles them makes all the difference. Between the lack of accountability, poor customer service, and being charged for items we didn't order, this was not a good experience. This restaurant was so overrated, they had a slick video my sister watched it on (YouTube I think) so she insisted we went there for a family reunion. We waited 40 minutes for a table for 11 people, I almost wanted to leave. They advertised ayce but who can possibly eat more than 1 plate? So much rice it's filling. The worst dish was the $39.99 for a fish soup n caramelized catfish, so overpriced n all the grilled meats were so sweet it was inedible. were so sweet , the dipping sauce was literally syrup, I added so much lemon but couldn't get rid of the overwhelming sweet taste. The coke was 100% flat I complained n got no relief, most restaurant would have replaced it w another drink, very bad customer service. Came here as my first Vietnamese all-you-can-eat spot and honestly got my money's worth. The place is in a strip mall with plenty of parking, nothing fancy inside, chairs are kinda hard (metal, no cushion), but the staff is super sweet and attentive with smiles. Pork chop had legit good flavor with that nice char, and the noodles, eggs, and rice together hit the spot. This is what I usually get with Broken Rice plates. I did not expect this to be one of the best places I've ever been to. I was just blown away by their flavors. Even the Nuoc Cham (fish sauce) was amazing. It's definitely on the spicy side and not overly sweet like most other places. From the bright and clean interior to the friendly staff it just adds to the amazing rice dishes they serve here. The food is very good and if you have never had com tam I think the food here would be a pretty good introduction to it. The ordering is pretty simple you just check the boxes on everything you want your platter to have and then they bring it out to you it was honestly so good. They just recently updated their pricing to $24.99 for regular and $34.99 for upgraded. We really enjoyed the portion sizes and how much food they gave us for the AYCE. The selection is not bad for what you get. As long as you like the options, the AYCE is completely worth it. We definitely enjoyed the broken rice, vermicelli, rolled up beef, and egg rolls. I don't think it's the best price for quality/ quantity, but it definitely hits the spot. The drinks were kind of a let down though. I think this place is probably better for the AYCE option that I saw a handful of people eat while I was there.
