We were in the mood for Mediterranean food so a quick Yelp search led us to Mama Mezze. I made reservations about a month in advance and were seated about 5 minutes after check in. Our waiter was great and checked in on us often. Food came out very quickly and everything was very good. To start, we had the whipped feta and the pickled veggies for our starters. Both were excellent and I would gladly order this again. For our mains, we opted to split the lamb tagine and the chicken shawarma. This was a great find for my friend and I to catch up and eat outside. Our waitress was personable and always came back to check on us. I like when my Diet Coke is refilled before it runs out haha. This eatery replaced the defunct Lupeto in the same location with a menu featuring North African and " Eastern Mediterranean" cookery. Mama Mezze follows the La Pecora Bianca money-making formula of middle-tier prices, in largely nondescript spaces that only hint at the cuisine on offer, serving unremarkable inoffensive plates to 20 and 30 somethings to accompany the usual in-restaurant Instagramming and to buffer the multiple cocktails that will no doubt be imbibed. Heck, I could be found at places such as Mama Mezze in my youth too. However, Mama Mezze wilts, and wilts quickly, in comparison to the less expensive and more sapid Shukette just a few blocks further West in Chelsea. Those interested in visuals, will find nothing to look at--you may not need to because the roar of the place will devour your attention. On the plus side, the service is speedy and the wine pours are generous. Like its sister restaurants, choosing to dine here is a safe choice if you find yourself sans reservations on a busy evening in NoMad. read more

We wandered into this spot for a late bite while out on a Saturday night and...it was fine. That is my overall take -- it was good, but definitely not memorable imo. We were seated in one of the cutest booths next to the little tree in the middle of this spot which is definitely a highlight of this restaurant. We ordered a mix of things to share including the matboucha (spicy roasted tomatoes and peppers, crispy garlic), falafel, chopped salad, zatar fries, and a little beef "cigar" for my omnivore husband. Loved the fries, but can't really go wrong there (or if you do, something has gone reaaaally wrong). The chopped salad almost ate like a salsa, didn't have a very distinct flavor. The falafel was good but a tad salty and god the hummus it came with a complete letdown. Great texture, but the most one note taste. My cousin described the matboucha as marinara sauce and to be honest, it really did taste like it. The laffa was piping hot, fluffy, and delicious so that was a good bite at least. Prices honestly seem a bit high for how the food was and service was friendly and helpful. All in all, it's an option especially if you have a mixed group of vegetarian and omnivore friends, but I am confident you can find a better mezze spot elsewhere. read more

Honestly what a great spot! I hadn't heard of Mama Mezze before this week, but was looking for something fresh and fun in Nomad or Flatiron that wasn't too fancy but still felt nice. This hit the vibes right on the mark with one of the most beautiful new dining rooms at this price point, a great cocktail list, and a menu that is absolutely fantastic. Service was kind and fast without being over bearing. All the dips were good, but a special shoutout to the whipped feta and Tzatziki, both absolutely amazing. The bread that comes with any dip is also out of this world, and if you get fries you must get the harissa aioli. Every dish we had was good, but my favorite was the steak skewers. Just so perfectly cooked at medium rare, and they go so well with the zhug and tahini. every vegetable also fantastic. Get this! He says "once you finish the mezze then I'll bring it out." I was like, has this man never eaten a meal like this before?? I was already upset because he refused to bring out the chicken. Bro, you act like this is some fine dining restaurant. This is as casual as it can get in Flatiron! So my mom and I finish the mezze. Then he brings out the dry chicken kebabs. With nothing to dip it in or eat along with it. Just the chicken. Because of my weird experience I give a one star. I was not expecting to actually really enjoy my meal! Came for restaurant week because this one a place I had walked by so many times but never really pushed myself to try. We ordered a lot of food for two people and we really liked majority of the items. My favorite was definitely the feta crème appetizer. It was super simple but really well done. The cauliflower dish and zucchini chips were pretty good as well and surprisingly didn't taste too fried and oil as I was expecting. The falafel pita was also super soft and the flavors were really good. My friend enjoyed that one the most. The ladke had insane reviews so bought that bit it tasted pretty similar to an Indian dish so we weren't that blown away by it. My friends and I shared dishes family-style, which I think is the way to go to try multiple things and make it more cost-effective. For the four of us, we ordered one dip, one salad, and two skewer mains. It was the perfect amount of food to leave us full and satisfied! We went with the classic hummus (zhug on the side since my friend doesn't like cilantro), the Greek salad, and two lemon-oregano chicken skewers. The hummus had a great, super creamy texture, but it wasn't that flavorful on its own and definitely needed the strong-flavored zhug. I'd maybe try the "bababeet" or mushroom hummus next time to try something new. The dips come with one solid-sized za'atar pita/laffa; it was fresh and warm with great herbs on top, but it's the kind of bread that might not taste as fresh once it cools down. The Greek salad was pretty good--bright and fresh, but about what you'd expect. I'd be curious to try the Mediterranean chopped salad next. Lastly, the chicken skewer main was delicious! It comes with two skewers that had good flavor, but I liked adding a bit of tahini and zhug on top. The Mama's rice was also fantastic; that's coming from someone who doesn't usually like rice, but this had great flavor from the lentils, caramelized onions, and crispy shallots. I also really enjoyed the roasted and pickled vegetables on the side! This was a generous portion size! I'd happily order this again or try the Persian lime-glazed salmon. I am a big fan of Mama Mezze's sister restaurant, La Pechora Bianca, so I was very excited to try this. First, the restaurant is located in a great location. The street is closed for outdoor dining and it is a great space for a great meal on a nice day. It is also close to Madison Square Park, which is an added bonus. Now to the food, it was sensational. Genuinely one of my favorite meals in a while. I had the Araya to start and it was so good. The beef was so flavorful and the accompanying white and green sauces made an already great app even better. It also had a slight crunch to it which was a great bonus! For my entree, I had the lemon chicken skewers, also tremendous! Chicken was soft and moist, the rice was AMAZING and the veggies were also very good. The menu offers Mediterranean delights: hummus, fried eggplant and zucchini chips with tzatziki sauce, big salads, Tagine, Whipped feta with zaa'tar bread, Mama's hamburger and many other options. We decided to share mezzes and this is what we ate: Spread: whipped feta which consists of the creamiest feta, Aleppo honey and candied pecans..absolute knockout. The Zaa'tar bread that accompanied it was delicious with mounds of zaa'tar. Appetizer: the eggplant and zucchini chips with tzatziki sauce were scrumptious. The tzatziki was creamy and love the dill. Sandwich: The chicken schnitzel sandwich is enormous and two people can actually share it. The schnitzel is fried to perfection and comes with red cabbage slaw, pickles with smoked harissa aioli on a challah bun. There were two enormous pieces of chicken served on the Challah bun. The La Pecora Bianca team made a smart decision when they turned this place from Lupetto (their restaurant here before) to this one. It was pleasant enough and as a plus it was quiet enough to talk. Service was excellent--friendly, prompt, and the food pacing was good. There was nothing remarkable about the starters or salad--the Eggplant and Zucchini Chips and Crispy Cauliflower were good but predictable, and the Mediterranean Chopped Salad was diced vegetables with dressing mixed in. On the other hand, the Lemon-Oregano Chicken Skewers for the main was so overcooked and dry that we had to send it back after two bites. We ordered the branzino instead. The server was apologetic, the branzino came out quickly and the manager came over to check on us later, all of which turned what could have been a no-return experience into a hiccup. It's just hard to understand how such an obviously poorly prepared plate can make it out of the kitchen. When we left, the upstairs dining room was humming.
