I came here today with a friend for lunch, it was the first time for both of us. I was in town for the Cinetopia film festival and I saw MaMa Satto on Groupon (pay $25, get $40 to spend). Both of us are kinda sushi newbies (I'm a BWG when it comes to sushi, I usually get the California roll) but I went a bit out of my comfort zone and ordered the shrimp tempura roll. I thought it would be a friend roll but it instead it had whole shrimp in it (the two end pieces), which I didn't eat. The rest of the roll was extremely tasty, though. We also ordered some meat gyoza, which was good too, and I had the bulgogi, which was very good. My friend ordered a veggie roll which was good too, and the bibimbop. Heads up, if you order a veggie bibimbop it does not come with an egg on top, so she had to order that separately ($1 extra) after she received her meal. Random, if you need to use the restroom while dining here it's in the basement (1 flight of stairs down) and you will need to get a key from the waitresses. The food here was very tasty. I found it a little pricey but to be honest I don't go out for Korean or Japanese food much - I'd say sushi prices are on par with other places I've been though. MaMa Satto is my favorite sushi place in Ann Arbor. I was surprised at the vast variety we had in Ann Arbor but MaMa Satto is by far my favorite. I have a bias because I just fell in love with the Salmon bowl there. It is amazing and soo addicting to get. The kitchen food is also pretty good but the salmon is especially good there. The sushi chef really knows how to cut the sushi and place it in a fancy yet yummy way. It honestly satisfies my sushi craving. I used to work at a sushi place a couple years so I know my sushi and MaMa Satto has quality sushi! I really love this place and have patronized multiple times! Best sushi place in Ann Arbor? Here, the sushi rolls aren't stuffed as full of rice as most of the other ones you find in America. The fish are decently fresh. The price is great especially with the lunch sets, and they often offer groupons as well to help you out with your cravings! Moreover, the meals are prepared pretty fast (although the problem with that is, sometimes you can feel hurried out of the restaurant even when there isn't a line of customers waiting for a table...). It's perfect for a quick dinner before making a meeting in school or a movie at the State or Michigan theaters Rolls-wise, I love the Mt Fuji for spice, though it is a little smaller than some of the other rolls at only 5 triangle-shaped pieces or so. The Godzilla is a good choice if you like unagi and tempura shrimp. The only roll here that I have tried and disliked was one with raw scallop and spicy sauce - because that drowned out the scallop taste entirely. The chicken curry tonkatsu was huge (like two persons' portions) and tasty. The udon in the tempura udon was also perfectly chewy. Oh yes, their plating is decent too and the rolls often look like they are for display. Reasons why this place is not a 5: - feeling rushed out of the restaurant at times - calling servers can sometimes be a little difficult - the bentos have a lot of items, but quality can differ. For example, the gyoza I tried in a bento set was rather bland, and the teriyaki chicken was dry (although still edible paired with the teriyaki sauce) - one time I came, there was a weird antiseptic scent hanging about. Stopped by here for lunch with my nephew... new owners, new menu offerings, new setup.... we got there 2 minutes before they opened and got seated and reviewed the menu. We went with the following: - Spicy Roll Combo - Tekka Chirashi - Tonkotu Ramen - non spicy. There was only one waitress when we got here, we got our water and after placing our order, the soup and salad came out. The salad was okay, but the soup was very bland, they needed to add more miso to give it that "miso" taste for the soup. While we waited for other foods, we kept smelling this "chemical" smell coming into the dining room... we were close to the sushi bar, not sure what they were doing in the kitchen, but diners should not be subject to these chemical smells... once I could ignore, but when you are forced to smell the chemical three times, not acceptable. Sushi Rolls - decent, nothing special... can't distinguish their rolls from other sushi joints in downtown. This dish should not be called Spicy rolls... no spice to the rolls what's so ever. They should put some chopped jalapeno peppers in there. Tekka Chriashi - Mixed feeling on this dish... the tuna was fresh and melted in my mouth; I expected a cheaper tuna to be used on this dish. As for other items used, not sure why they cubed them... Egg should have been left as whole, same with avocado... get rid of the radish, not necessary. Rice was decent. Tonkotu Ramen - I would rate this 1 star out of 5... the broth tasted "instant"; the noodle was under cooked, so it was very chewy and I could taste that "flour" taste in the ramen noodles. The noodles needed to be cooked longer and hopefully they are NOT using instant broth to make the broth for the ramen noodles; definitely can tell the dish had MSG in them. As for the service, water was not refilled as quickly as I liked. The waitress passed our table multiple times serving one other table, but never checked on our table after the food was delivered... got our water re-filled right before we got our check. I would avoid the Ramen if you can and stick to Japanese and Korean food... I can't say much about the Korean foods, since I haven't tried them yet, but definitely will give it a try next time I'm there. read more

Sushi is aggressively mid, fish quality as you can expect for the Midwest, but there was basically no scallion in my yellowtail scallion roll and fish portions were overall very skimpy. We waited 1 hour for our two takeout rolls on a Sunday afternoon, of which half the time they were sitting there on the counter. Even after we asked them if the rolls were ours and them confirming that they were, the servers would look in the boxes, leave for a couple minutes, come back, rummage through boxes again, then leave. We were then informed that one of the rolls was made wrong, and we'd have to wait longer. After another twenty minutes, listening the manager yell at an employee and watching several other people come in a pick up their orders, we finally got our food. My spicy salmon roll was small and expensive. $5.50. It was drenched in spicy mayo. Hardly any salmon. I also never received any soup or salad when I ordered $10+ worth of food. I don't mind not getting it but I would like for them to ask since it is complimentary. Waited so long to get a table in the empty restaurant. Got our drinks then waited another 10 minutes for someone to come take our order after we had to ask. Two of the three of us did not get what we ordered. I tired to send mine back and she came back and said can you just eat this and I will give you a discount. I was very hungry by this point so I said fine after she kept pushing the same thing on me. After seeing another new name, and a new, much more expansive menu, I was really excited to give Mama Satto a try. Miya, the restaurant that was here before, was respectable, so I was hoping this place would be at least as good. First, the menu is super confusing. I wanted some Udon with meat, but there only seemed to be the Mama udon (with no meat in the picture), Tempura Udon with Tempura, Seafood, or Meat options, and some other udons. When I asked for just an udon dish with meat, she pointed to the Tempura Udon item and said you choose from Tempura, Seafood or meat. That's confusing because it seems like they only have tempura udon as an option, when turns out it's really a choice of three. Anyway, back to the food. The udon came, and was an okay size. Not super filling, but not too small either. The problem was that the broth was so boring. There was no flavor in it at all, and the meat portion was pathetic. There were some pieces of seaweed floating around, and one lonely fish cake. It was pretty sad. The noodles had a good texture, but overall, didn't taste like anything. Service was quick to get our orders, though they didn't come refill our tea at all, and seemed in a rush to clear out everyone's dishes. I get that the restaurant is small, but it seemed a little rushed. For about $10, it seemed like I just had a bowl of noodles that was transferred straight out of the pot, basically with just hot water. My boyfriend and I are frequent customers of Mama Satto. We come here once every couple of weeks because the sushi is good and cheap! It's a pretty basic menu but it's good for what we like. Any spicy rolls are pretty good, and they have some decent specialty rolls. Ramen is pretty mediocre, so I only really get sushi there. My only complaints are: (1) they used to give miso soup AND salad and now they only give soup, which is disappointing. (2) the service can be hit or miss. The place usually isn't busy but if you catch them at a busy time, they can never keep up with orders. Overall, though, it's underrated! I definitely like it better than Totoro and Sadako. read more

I've been coming here since before the changeover, and the new establishment does offer more variety on the menu. Quality does feel almost the same tho. I had the shoyu ramen and my husband had the yaki udon. The ramen was alright. It wasn't terrible, but it's nothing to write home about. The broth is pretty flat, and the garnish were few. The udon noodles in my husband's dish was nice, but the sauce was too sweet for him. In a separate trip, I had their sashimi rice bowl for lunch and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the rice and sashimi, as well as the quantity. I loved it here. The service was amazing, and I would definitely recommend the popcorn chicken and the chicken teriyaki sushi. Sadly, they were out of curry for the curry rice when I went. I'm not sure why this place only has three stars, but personally I think Mama Satto is a solid 4. I come here pretty often because I live close by and the food was never bad. I've tried several things; the katsu curry, salmon bowl, bibimbap, donburi, okinomiyaki, and more. I'd say the salmon bowl is my favorite, but they increased the price for their sashimi bowls from last year. I don't get it as often but if I'm in the mood, I'll order it. The owner is an amazing woman! My family and I had the pleasure of going to Mama Satto after my graduation, and the owner treated us like royalty. She even gave us two free orders of mochi ice cream(!!) because we told her it was my special day. You can't beat service like that! The food itself was also verrrry good - my boyfriend and I split an order of bulgolgi and we thoroughly enjoyed it. This restaurant seems to making funny mistakes all the time. I basically don't go there unless I am super uncomfortable moving or there is no more options available. This time it charged my card full amount (including food+tax+15%tip). However, it gave another note/receipt for signature which asked for tip again. So people PAY ATTENTION NOT TO BE DOUBLE TIPPED. It is annoying to see a restaurant add tips automatically in its bill as if it has no confidence in its services or no trust for its customers. But it is even more annoying to see Mama Satto arrange tip in such way, which may lead people to tip twice. read more

First time coming since this place changed ownership, but were pleasantly surprised to see that we knew the owner from Seoul Garden! She is great, checking in on customers throughout the meal and helping the servers out during a dinner service. Overall, the place was clean and the food came out quickly. Of the dishes we ordered (curry rice, spicy roll combo, spider roll, half udon upgrades), I liked the curry rice with chicken katsu the best. Curry was flavorful, katsu was perfectly cooked and the portion size was generous. The rolls were good, although pretty similar to many other Japenese restaurants in the area. One knock is that the restaurant is priced high, but offers a Groupon, which in my opinion never seems to work out well for the business. I'd much prefer that they just lower the prices slightly and then eliminate the groupon altogether. Having heard the rake that they get charged, it's no wonder they have to raise the prices to stay open! We've been coming to this location since it was Sushi.com and loved their beef ramen soup. Over the years the quality of the soup has gone downhill and tonight will be the last time my husband and I order it. The beef used to be marinated in a Teriyaki type marinade which made the meat sweeter which went great with the spicy broth. Now it's a fish based broth with a cold hard boiled egg. No spice, no flavor besides fish and barely any beef. Just gross. To be fair, the Spicy Dynamite roll is delish but not enough to justify a 35 minute drive. Unfortunately we had the same bad experience as the first. Staff is friendly, but not attentive or aware of your needs. First main lunch course arrived 25 minutes after ordering it, and was NOT served at the same time with other guests main courses, but at least 10-15 minutes apart. Coincidentally the men were among the first to be served, with the women having to wait 10-15 minutes for their food (on both visits) and with four other customers about to leave. Tea was served with salt instead of sugar, no spoon, and was not removed from the bill. Being presented with chopsticks is great, but you know what is even better? Being asked if we would prefer a fork and knife. When we requested different utensils, the dining room was empty of other guests. You would think they would deliver them promptly, so your food doesn't get any colder than it became. But they didn't. You decide. Either try the place out for yourself, or look for another place that deserves your business. read more

After seeing the change from Miya, I wasn't expecting much since I wasn't a huge fan of the previous place. I ordered the Sake Don after a friend recommended it to me and I was very surprised. The bowl was beyond my expectations and all of the components of it from the salmon to the seaweed and egg were fresh and tasted great (both individually and together). I also met the owner of the restaurant and she was incredibly kind and often checked on me to ask how the food was. I'm a huge fan and would consider myself a regular now. 11/10 would recommend this to friends and all people thinking about trying this out. read more

Got a Groupon to test this place out and along the way, I think I found my new sushi joint. Nestled in downtown Ann Arbor along North University, this place first made me excited when they had pictures of almost everything. Juvenile, yes, but when I don't feel like Googling every item, it's my saving grace. I started with the edamame, it was perfectly tender and salted, which is surprisingly hard to find in your usual quick serve sushi fare. Soon after I put in my order for sushi, going with a roll that included some cream cheese, cucumber, and toasted salmon roll. I won't lie, I was a little bummed and must be spoiled, but the ginger salad and broth soup cost extra, but I decided to splurge although they were your standard sushi precursors. Anywho, the sushi itself was amazing. It had been toasted ever so slightly that it didn't gross me out quite like sashimi does but still made me feel like I was staying true to the culture.
