If I had to choose one word to summarize my experience at Mamajuana Café, it would be: perfect. The restaurant describes itself as a Latin American dining experience. Our waitress explained that the menu is a fusion of Dominican and Japanese cuisine. Since I have never visited either the Dominican Republic or Japan, I cannot speak to its authenticity. What I can say with confidence is that they have mastered flavor. The team at Mamajuana Café clearly pays attention to every detail--from timing and presentation to the thoughtful combination of ingredients and spices. Every dish felt carefully crafted and intentionally prepared. I only wish I lived closer so I could return more often and explore more of the menu. We ordered the burger and the filet mignon, and I highly recommend both. In fact, the burger was excellent. My only regret is ordering something familiar instead of taking the opportunity to try one of their more unique creations. My friend suggested this place. When I seen it was Latin American with a hint of Caribbean, I was immediately turned off. However, you don't just a book by its cover. The food was good. This has been on my list for a while so I'm glad I got a chance to dine in at Mamajuana Cafe during the ACHE conference with a group of about 17 on a Monday night. Our assistant made the reservation and despite a conference being in town, alongside a CHEER competition and the kickoff to the Rodeo, I was genuinely impressed with how smoothly everything went. Even with a large party, the staff handled our orders with ease. There was no confusion or delays and our food came out in about 15 minutes, which again, is pretty impressive given our group size. Everyone ordered something different, and there were no complaints across the table about the food. I got the stuffed red snapper, and it was flavorful. You can tell the kitchen knows what it's doing. The staff were also friendly and the restaurant is very spacious and well maintained. As expected for a downtown spot, parking is what it is, so plan accordingly (weekdays are better). But overall, the efficiency, service, and quality of food made this a great experience, especially for a large group. read more

I came here for a Galentine's dinner my friend hosted for a party of 8 and we had such a great time! They were super accommodating and even let her decorate the table with games and balloons which made it really special. The atmosphere was amazing, there was a DJ, people were dancing, and there's even a speakeasy . The music was pretty loud, which made it a little hard for our large group to talk at times. Not a complaint at all, just something to note if you're coming with a big group because the vibe is definitely lively. The drinks were great! Located where Azuma used to be in downtown. Service was a bit slow. The food here is Caribbean influenced. The dishes are okay; you can tell the seafood is previously frozen and some dishes are fairly pre-made. The empanada trio were fine, and the yucca balls tasted fairly bland. For the main, the mofongo I tried had shrimp and lobster that tasted a bit rubbery and frozen-ish. Overall, the flavor profile is a bit lacking and I feel the Cisco effect a bit. read more

I've come here a few times during the day & night due to how close it is to me. I like the fact that they have hookah readily available but I dislike the price. It typically ranges from $40-$50 with $20 refill. I say range because it's always different & you pay for it separately. Deans's has cheaper hookah and free refills but it isn't available during the day, bummer. The outside patio is a nice play to sit & people watch if you're downtown on a nice day. Service is always prompt even when busy. They make great espresso martinis. I've only tried appetizers & deserts here but they were good. I would try more entree options eventually. read more

I made reservations for 8:30pm. We valet parked in front of the restaurant, which was really convenient. They took us right away as most of the restaurant was empty. It's so loud in there, it's more like a club with food and not a restaurant that you can go to and talk to your date. It took our waitress over 10 minutes just to come by and take our drink order, this was a theme all night. She was nowhere to be found! We ordered tostones with crab meat, and pork belly appetizer. Both dishes were delicious and flavorful. We ordered the stuffed fish and my husband ordered a stuffed yucca dish. Both were amazing We finished our meal with one of the best tres leches I've ever had. It was so loud in there, I honestly couldn't wait to leave. I couldn't talk to my husband all night. On a Sunday afternoon I was walking in downtown Houston and heard the lively music coming out of Mamajuana and decided to give it a try. Walking in I felt the energy and vibe. I was welcomed and seated at the bar back to the influencer wall. Michelle was my incredible bartender that set the experience. She guided me through the menu and I followed her suggestions. The Mamafungo with steak and cheese brought me back to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Amazing flavor explosion in my mouth the did not need any additional seasoning. I had already intended to order to-go, so the music didn't deter me. Inside was very dimly lit, giving it a lounge vibe. There's a backdrop for the socials too. Went here with a group of 12 for some lite bites, drinks, music and vibe. The interior was spacious and the view through the large windows facing the patio enhanced the scene. It is an oxymoron, but it felt expansive and intimate possibly from the hidden from view speakeasy towards the rear. Everyone's libations did not disappoint and the appetizers were ok. I had a really disappointing experience at this restaurant. From the start, the service was terrible -- our waitress barely checked on us and was almost impossible to find when we needed anything. We felt completely ignored the entire time. The food made things even worse. The steak was extremely fatty and not enjoyable at all, and the chicken was undercooked, which is honestly unacceptable and concerning. Now let's get started with the service. Not only was it incredibly slow, some of my friends didn't even get their food at the same time as everyone else . It took 45+ minutes for us to even put in an order for food once we sat down. This should've been the red flag that sent us home, but being a Friday night and with a large group for a birthday, we just could not do that. Now for the REAL kicker was how disgusting our food was. The only thing that was even palatable was the French fries. One of my friends got a steak which was quite literally the texture of a needoh. It also was just flat out nasty and tasted like burnt cheap hamburger meat. The empanadas? More like EMPTYNADAS!! They had one dollop of stuffing and the rest was filled with air. We were promptly seated and the server as well as the manager were very attentive to our group. At the time of this post, they had a special on bottle service ($195), but we declined. Looking back, this may have been the better option versus ordering cocktails a la carte. We ordered a variety of appetizers to try. The yucca balls were the standouts. For entrees I ordered the burger and shared. It was tasty. One of my friends ordered to calamari salad and that was really good. After 9pm, there is a dj that plays danceable music (genre is Latin). We danced for a bit. There is no true dance floor but space was available. I took a star off because the cocktails were $16 - $20 but not very strong. The drinks were all a bit sweet for my palate. I was traveling for work and stopped here with my colleague to grab some hookah and a work call. I didn't realize it's a restaurant that serves hookah instead of a hookah lounge that serves food (if that makes sense). That being the case, my colleague and I had just had lunch so we didn't get to try their food. The hookah was okay, but I am a hookah snob and very particular of how it should smoke. Our server was so kind to check on us with the hookah and take it back a few times to make sure it was smoking right. Another thing to mention, my colleague and I had to take a work call inside and for a restaurant, it was really nice of them to accommodate us at a table with an outlet nearby. I do wish I tried the food. I watched the table next to me eat their meal, everything looked amazing. This is definitely a spot I would check out once I'm in Houston again. I planned a birthday dinner here for a group of 15. The reservation was for 6PM and we arrived early around 545 to ensure we would be seated. We weren't seated until 645. After being seated, it took forever for a server to come get our drink order. We had to ask for water even though they had glasses for water. We finally placed our appetizer and food order, and it literally took forever to get our food. It was almost an hour and 25 minutes before we got our food. Now understanding that it was a large group I expected a week but we all pretty much ordered the same thing. Our server was so slow and we tried to give him a chance, but it was ridiculous. We never had our water refilled the entire 2 1/2 hours we were there. I have to say the food was very good and pricey for Mofongo, but since we were celebrating a milestone birthday for a friend, we didn't really care. The upside is the drinks were strong and worth the money. The aesthetics and music were really good. But, I don't have to return to this place.
