Maman Joon is all over social media these days, but after visiting, it was mid, as the kids say. It is a local area chain and is best compared to Moby Dick. This location is in the ill-fated former space of other defunct quick service dining establishments, most recently Cava. The ambiance hasn't changed since prior tenants and is very minimalist, with several tables and stools inside as well as a patio. The outside dining is more spacious but not exactly inviting unless you enjoy a view of traffic and Parking Garage B. Inside, your view is similarly uninspired of the shoppers entering the mall by Michael Kors and the restaurant serving line and beverage cooler. They could consider adding a little more decor or a napkin holder or an artificial flower on the table. (Even Cava and BGR had better ambiance!). The layout of the restaurant is unclear. Although the serving line is present immediately upon entry, you place your order at the opposite end, at the register. There is also insufficient clarity as to where/how to bus your own table (the area is located by the entranceway). Anyway, onto the important part: the food was average, and for most items is approximately a ten-minute wait. It was only passable in the end, though I will say that it is nicely presented, so at least the socials aren't misleading in that regard. And yes, the meat was flavorful but very comparable to other similar establishments. The price was a little steep in my view, at around 20 dollars plus an inflation and packing fee of 6% (for both dine in and takeout orders), which I think is inappropriate for a fast casual place without table service. Speaking of service, it is practically non-existent. You place your order and then receive it once your number is called. I think they could at least adopt a more Noodles & Company vibe and give you a number and then bring a dine-in order to your table (especially if you are being subject to a service fee) but alas, life doesn't take requests. Curiously, the restaurant had a large beverage cooler with more bottled sodas and Doogh than a convenience store, and a ton of Gatorade, which seemed an odd choice. Never have I ever longed for a blue Gatorade to accompany a kebob or sandwich but perhaps I am missing out. Overall, I think this place has a lot of potential, so I've rated it a three, but the food is not stand-out. Given the lack of value, service, and ambiance, I'd consider it a better choice for takeout. That said, I probably won't be rushing back due to how many comparable or better venues are in the immediate area. read more

Maman Joon persian kabobs...there are so many options for kabobs in the DMV it is hard to keep track but Maman was having a special for Eid where the kabobs were 50% off. So guess what?? We have to try Maman Joons right? As folks have said it is in the former Cava space so it is a bit off the beaten path in Tysons Corner Center near the Lucid electric car dealer and not in either of the food courts. We arrive around Noon and proceed to order and I was feeling the beef kabobs, however, was told no beef kabobs were done yet. Hmmm..how do you not have any beef kabobs ready at Noon? Waiting for the 3pm rush? A bit disappointing but Ok, fine, I guess Chicken it is. We pay, get a table, and wait. While waiting, the place is smoky like you are cooking steaks in your house on a cast iron grill. Surprised the smoke alarms don't start blaring. Kinda weird when a restaurant is having that issue, but hey, who am I to say that? Tip: Invest in better ventilation as it is not conducive for a good customer experience... The chicken kabobs are good...not the best I've had but definitely not the worst. I have to say a few of the chicken chunks had some red in it so not sure if it was 100% cooked so I ate around it. Overall, I'd probably give Maman Joon another try one of these days...Personally, I detect the slight difference between Persian and Afghani kabobs and I prefer Persian so would hit up Maman again. We ordered a lot from the menu: Koobideh Kabob (beef): 10/10 Chicken Kabob: 11/10 perfectly cooked and juicy chicken. I think it's marinated for 30+ hours! Salmon Kabob: 10/10 Listen, I'm not a big salmon eater but I ate this whole thing. It's super dank do not skip this Lamb Kabob: 10/10 so good with the topped seasonings and kashk-o-bademjan (eggplant dip)! The bread was also a major star of the show. Combined with the meats as a little sandwich is the way to go! The table also agreed the hummus was the best we've ever had. Also order the Persian tea! We visited Maman Joon for the first time tonight and were very pleased. We had the combo with kubideh and chicken kabobs as well as the kashk-o-bademjan appetizer, which were all delicious. The chicken was tender and juicy. In contrast to some other kabob places we've been to, here we were served plenty of basmati rice, nicely highlighted with saffron rice, plus grilled tomato and onion, just as in Iran, and with a nice presentation. The prices were reasonable, too, especially for the location. The servers were friendly and the food was ready quickly. It was fun to be there in the outdoor dining area when it happened to be Eid and everyone was festive and dressed up. No loud music, which was a plus for us. Finally, the owner greeted us on the way out and had a nice conversation, plus dashed us samples of desert, tea, and khorsht-e-gheymeh--not on the menu we saw but a delicious addition to a menu heavy on kabobs. Their online menu also lists daily specials including lubia polo, zereshk polo, and lamb shank. We are anxious to go back with more of our family and try all of these! read more

The lamb kebab in Midtown McLean that was pretty good. The bread that I served with the eggplant dip is fresh hot. It's tough to find because it's inside the mall itself on the second floor but on the first floor from the Bloomingdale's entrance. You'll find it across from Michael Kors in the small corner, not on the main strip of the mall. It's hidden in the corner and you'll miss it unless you go down that area. It's a take out spot. Reminds me of an upscale Moby Dick. Very basic menu and everything was cooked authentically. I actually liked it more than Alborz and it's much reasonably priced. They make fresh bread in house and the recipes are true to Iran. The joojeh was delicious. Grilled perfectly and juicy. He enjoyed the Chenjeh combo and I loved mine as well. Very generous portions and delicious. I give the food a solid 4.5/5 and they were friendly so I'll round it to a 4.9. The only issue is they should list it in the maps as being in the mall. Not bad! I had the chicken wrap and thought the chicken could've been better seasoned. I've had better chicken kabobs. I also had the saffron ice cream and I will say I am a sucker for Persian ice cream the ice cream was well worth it and comes in a pretty large bowl. I needed my husbands help to finish it! It was another hope that short-lived. First, it is a tiny place with minimal seats. Chairs are very primitive, bare wood, and have uneven legs. It was very smokey to the point making my eyes cry - possibly not adequate ventilation. When I received my order, one of two kebab skewers was missing, had to ask to make the order right. The ground beef kebab had too many onions and pepper. The bread was very thin and ice cold from the fridge. I hoped for one from a tandoori. Or it could be warmed up. this is probably the most welcoming place i've ever been to. the manager/owner was walking around and greeting people. i'm not of Persian descent, so i did some research of their new franchise at Tysons and they really stand by their restaurant's name. through a quick google search, Maman Joon means a gesture of close kinship and hospitality. this is now my go-to spot after taking my first bite into this amazing dish. i got combo one which i believe is chicken breast kabob and beef kabob. it's not included in the picture, but i also ordered dolmeh and bread on the side with extra yogurt sauce. the dolmeh was sooooo delicious. to describe, it's stuffed grape leaves and texture is grainy and very soft. tastes acidic and sweet at the same time. the chicken was super juicy and paired super well with the yogurt sauce. THE BEEF. omg the BEEEEF. it was sweet! it was savory! it was the perfect bite with everything! super tender, super juicy, so flavorful, you just have to try this place out. the tomato was even perfect. still had its natural crisp but cooked very nicely. the basmati rice was so delightful that you could eat it by itself. the ambiance is very friendly. we went on a weekend so it was pretty crowded. everyone and even the customers seemed pretty welcoming. inside and outdoor seating is a little limited but that's the perks of the mall is that you can try and eat anywhere else with available seating like the food court! we were lucky to receive outdoor seating and it was beautiful. also, check out the Indian cafe next door for some chai and/or desserts!! 5/5 coming back frequently whenever i visit Tysons. thank you for the wonderful experience!! read more

Went after going to the movies at Tysons. Very good Persian Kababs and food. We had a Combo 1 and Salmon Entree. Both were excellent. The beef was moist and well textured. The chicken was perfectly cooked. I don't eat salmon, but my husband enjoyed it. We had an eggplant dip that was very good. Persian food is made with quality meats and ingredients, so it's not cheap, but when you consider the entrees are around $18 and we each head plenty with leftovers for a second meal, it's really not that expensive.
