Came up here for a coffee date, and it's a genuinely cute spot tucked into a quieter part of the UES. We sat outside and enjoyed the space and the weather, and the décor really commits to a specific aesthetic. If I had to describe the vibe: a couple from the Midwest who read a lot of Emily Dickinson and probably summer in Greece. Somehow it works. My date picked the spot, she said she comes here a lot to get work done, and you could tell it fit her energy perfectly. I don't usually make it this far north, but I was coming straight from the Met, so the timing lined up. My friend recommended this little party shop for breakfast. I got a Nutella beignet, cheddar and scallion scone, and a hot chocolate. They called my name for the hot chocolate, and I noticed it didn't have whip cream on it when I had a paid extra for that. I asked the girl to add it, and she pulled out reddiwhip, which was a little disappointing, but it was still good. The Nutella beignet was delicious but did taste a little stale. The cheddar scone was really good. After ordering, I noticed they had a fridge with little glass bottles of Diet Coke, so I grabbed one on my way out. Each has a consistent romantic, rustic chic aesthetic with plenty of faux flowers decorating their interior walls and front entrance. Their menu varies a little by location though the gist is they offer breakfast/brunch plates like avo toast, eggs, sandwiches, baked goods in the form of pastries/cookies/cakes, coffee and tea options, and in this location--a spread of maman merch like books, lunchboxes, caps, mugs, tumblers, etc. My friends and I ordered: - hot salted tahini honeycomb latte + oatmilk $7.25, thought this was light on the tahini flavor, couldn't taste it much until reaching the bottom, where the syrup settled. Also a little confused about the "honeycomb" name as I didn't taste much honey or see any honeycomb. On the pricier side for what it was, I'd prefer a black sesame latte for the bolder roasted sesame flavor. Will give credit that the tahini was very smooth and not grainy though. - Iced honey lavender latte $6, decent lavender flavor, not too overpowering. Fragrant, smooth and refreshing on a warmer day. - iced latte $5.25, didn't try this though I assume pretty standard. - kouign maman $6, their take on this pastry was nice. Buttery, flaky a little crispier on the edges than I was expecting though also pleasantly surprised by the level of sweetness (was anticipating it to be sweeter). - coconut oatmeal cookie $4.50, I didn't try this though my friend enjoyed the soft freshness of the dough and finished it in one sitting. I will say visually speaking most of their pastries looked pretty good, like the raspberry brioche, olive oil cake, Nutella brownie, a few different cookies. I came to maman with my mom for brunch, and we had such a fantastic experience! I had been here and to their other location in Ardmore PA before, and had completely forgotten about it until we were in the area on the way to the Met and wanted a fancy brunch. Before you even enter, the facade looks beautiful. Like many trendy restaurants in the city they've created a flower display that wraps around the molding and windows, making it feel like you're entering a tiny overgrown cottage in the French countryside. The inside is very clean and aesthetically pleasing, with rustic farmhouse-style tables decorated with flowers and blue and white ceramic tableware. On a Tuesday afternoon there were plenty of open tables in the front opposite the pastry display cases, but we opted to go upstairs into their quieter back seating area. We started with some of their seasonal lattes, which were both fantastic. I got their salted tahini honeycomb latte, that came sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds. Such an unconventional flavor combo that worked SOOOOO well... I savored every last drop!! My mom got the honey lavender latte which was so fragrant and delightful too. For brunch, I ordered Elisa's breakfast bowl- with a fried egg, marinated chickpeas and sweet potato, sun dried tomatoes, herbed feta, and thinly sliced cucumbers over farro. Mixing it all together allows the feta to combine with the other flavors and create a delicious creamy dressing. My mom got the Tawni salad, which was so savory and delicious that I kept stealing bites! It had arugula, finely chopped red cabbage, sweet potatoes, farro, and pickled red onions tossed in a kale/pumpkin seeds pistou (pesto) and topped with an egg. The mark of a great salad (to me) is when I love it so much that I want to recreate it at home. This was definitely the case for both dishes!! The service was very prompt and efficient, but no one ever came to rush us out of our table. On the day that we went it was counter pickup only, but you were welcome to take food to one of their many tables and sit for as long as you'd like. It was very casual; there were even some ladies playing mahjong in the corner. We also got a blueberry goat cheese and thyme scone to have as a snack later, and it was incredible. The flavors complimented each other so well, and the berry and cheese filling made for an almost cheesecake-like texture inside the scone. I've done too good to go orders from maman before and have been impressed with the quality of their pastries so this was not a surprise. I've been here several times given its proximity to our building, and unfortunately the issues feel systemic rather than incidental. The overall experience consistently reflects poor management most evident in the staff's dismissive attitude and lack of basic customer service or appreciation. There is a prevailing sense that customers are an inconvenience rather than the reason the business exists. In addition, the pastries often have flies all over them. With better leadership and standards, this could be a very different establishment, but as it stands, the experience is consistently disappointing. read more

Was here recently for a work breakfast, around 9am. Got a table easily but the room quickly filled up. We each had a Papa's Breakfast Bowl -- some substitutions and ingredients taken out were allowed, although they messed that up upon arrival (was quickly solved, though). The bowl had good taste and I enjoyed mixing all the ingredients together. I wouldn't mind coming back in the future, but just wouldn't be my first choice. Keep in mind there is no wifi and we got in trouble for taking a laptop out. The server was nice about it but this is not ideal for remote workers! You can't make a reservation for tables, but once I was seated and ordered, I was told I had to move because a large party made a reservation and needed the space where I was seated. The space is beautiful both inside and out and radiates French cafe vibes. I also noticed that they offered a lot of features to make the restaurant kid-friendly- changing station, high chair, waiting area, etc. we ordered cappuccinos, a kouigan maman (their name for it), piña colada croissant cube, breakfast bowl and slice of the banana bread. The breakfast bowl was filled with potatoes, egg, avocado and bacon- it was probably our favorite item that we ordered. The croissant dough seemed a little off - more dense than flaky. The piña colada cream was delicious though. The only other thing we noticed was that the cappuccinos seemed smaller than usual and felt like a bit of a tease. Honestly I wouldn't come here for cookies since there are better chains. Maman's ubiquitous presence in the city make the aesthetic cafes feel familiar & comforting. This is the third (maybe fourth?) location I've been to because simply walking by guarantees at least a peek inside. And looking often leads to buying. I was missing the lavender white chocolate mocha from my go-to San Francisco spot when I ordered a lavender latte from Maman, but the slightly bitter, watery drink didn't hit the same. Their display case bursts with every sort of carb you could want but the almond croissant is a standout with all its sweet, gooey insides. Maman has a variety of creative coffee drinks & a menu full of savory items I'm looking forward to trying. Even though my first encounter with this location wasn't perfect, I'm sure this Maman, or the next, will find me walking through their doors soon again. read more

While each component tasted good if not great, I didn't find the components meshing well together as well as I'd have liked. The egg was nice and runny; the chicken was dominating the flavor - not sure if it was a good complement after all - the avocado on top was super mushy and made the top bun slip off the sandwich; the cornmeal bun had a nice gritty texture to it which was interesting and was warm. The bacon was lost in the rest of the sandwich (maybe my own fault). Just okay - nothing to write home about but def hearty. BELGIAN WAFFLE ** We almost didn't get this but you MUST. It was the highlight of the meal - it has a beautiful crisp/sugary crunch texture to the outside, and a softness inside; wouldn't describe as fluffy but sweet and not too sweet. I also noticed the ice melted quite quick even tho it was not the honest day in nyc by far. I personally hate it when my ice melts before I finish my drink lol. I finally got to try Maman after walking past different locations multiple times. For someone who was new to this chain, its almost like Tatte but for French/American cuisine. It features a wide range of classic breakfast dishes (with their take), salads, soups, sandwiches, and baked goods from bread to cookies, as well as many coffee drink options. Out of the several things I tried, the green shakshuka was my favorite! I loved how it had a generous serving of sauteed greens with lots of herbs (basil, dill, cilantro, etc) and olives. The sauteed greens were well seasoned and mixed well with the chunky feta cheese. I only wish that the sunny side up eggs were less cooked and could have added some runny yolk to the mixture.The sourdough slices were also solid - toasted but not too dry. The turkey sandwich featured tender turkey along with an appropriate amount of goat cheese and cranberry jam. The sweet potato soup was pretty standard with a strong potato flavor but felt that it was under-seasoned. The nutty chocolate chip cookie was filled with chocolate chips and nuts ranging from macadamia, almonds, and walnuts. I wish I could have had it fresh right out of the oven but it was still tasty nevertheless. The staff who took our order was super nice and answered a lot of our questions.
