But for my money the stand-outs, even as an avowed, unapologetic carnivore are: **Burrata slice: its easy to roll your eyes when this ubiquitous cheese makes its compulsory menu appearance. Yes, it's like the roast brussel sprouts of Italian dairy products. Played out. BUT I promise this iteration is still worth seeking out - the chili oil, the fresh basil, everything is working in concert to give you a bite that's equally parts spicy, sweet, creamy, and herbaceous. **White slice: sounds (and frankly looks) like a bore, but the loads of fresh garlic cutting through several distinct cheeses, punctuated by briny parsley makes it a lot sexier than meets the eye. PRO TIP: tell your snob side to STFU for a minute and order a side of ranch, which they make in house and is a buttermilk dill bomb right to the front of the palate. Oh my. Oh my, oh my, oh my. How to describe Mama's Boy. I'll start here. As an east coast transplant (Bostonian), it is VERY difficult to find and - in a complimentary way - compare pizza on the west coast to pizza on the east coast. After 9 years of Bay livin', I can confidently say this is the best slice of pizza I've had on the west coast. The crust is thin and crispy. The tomato sauce is simple, flavorful. The toppings are perfectly proportioned to the slice, and you frankly can't go wrong with your preferred slice (I can't decide my preference between the sausage or the hot burrata, gently drizzled in hot honey ). Mama's boy is now our official family go-to for pizza, whether take out or eating in house. Try it once, and you will understand why. We got a few pieces 1. Burrata cheese - really liked it. It's a Cheese slice with burrata cheese , basil, salt and honey 2. Sausage- great flavor with a nice spicy flavor (but not hot spicy) 3. White - was good - lots of garlic flavor. I think some bacon on it would have made it amazing!!!! 4. Cheese - can't really say how it was because unfortunately it wasn't heated up so I didn't eat it. Pros: Delicious pepperoni and cheese pizza. Lots of seating inside, very casual. Cons: A bit expensive especially since the pizza is so thin. Tip: If you are trying to reheat your leftovers, I have found reheating a slice on a pan with the lid on for a few minutes does wonders. My New Favorite Pizza Joint. When i think of Pizza, it's what i grew up on and favor, NY style. Thin, crispy crust, salted dough, light use of oregano in the sauce and low moisture mozzarella cheese liberally spread about the dough but not overdone. A plain cheese slice is my go to by choice. I ordered one but took it to go, reheated in an air fryer and ruined it. So I can't give an honest opinion on it but it looked and smelled good when I received it. What jumped out and grabbed my senses enough was the slice of Mushroom pizza i also ordered. I asked for garlic powder to top it and Greg happily accommodated my request by bringing me an industrial size container to oblige my salivating tastebuds. Thanks again, Greg ;) Here at Mama's Boy, their Mushroom Pie is a 10! It has a creamy sauce with a hint of lemon and is just in a word, deliciousness. As a self professed old, stodgy, fussy pizza eater, I've had my desire restored to actually enjoy eating pizza in the bay area after ordering pizza here. Mama's Boy opened in March 2023. It's a located on W Grand with Broadway as the closest cross street. Street parking can be challenging at times but there is a paid parking lot across the street. If you appreciate east coast style pizza and have adventurous taste buds, try the Mushroom slice and see if you agree, this is a nice fresh upgrade from a standard cheese slice. I have been pissing and moaning to all my Bay Area native friends (okay, and everyone else) for over a decade about how the pizza in CA is - ah, let's skip those adjectives so I can skip the internet hate. Anyway, the point is I missed East Coast pizza (Graffiti in Old Oakland comes really close but the quality is inconsistent). Anyhow, Mama's Boy hits that "I miss that bomb ass East Coast pie" craving. (I just went yesterday and have already told 4 friends about this place lol.) They have slices and whole pies. Traditional and fancy schmancy. Expensive (I'm good with 1 slice which is basically 2 slices and that'll cost ya $5, but the whole pies are mid to high 30s), but whatever - it's expensive to do business and hire staff in Oakland (especially near Lake Merritt) so they've gotta do what they've gotta do to STAY in business. They have beer on tap which is priced the same as other local spots. I'm a white pizza person so that's what I got. It was super solid, could've done with a little less garlic (which I love but in moderation) and a little more seasoning on the crust, but hey, this was still the best slice I've had in over a decade in the Bay Area. If I ever try a slice with red sauce, I'll be sure to update on the sauce. It's self serve (order and pickup from the cashier) so I can't speak to service other than everyone seems nice. My only real beef (and this applies to most of Berkeley and a lot of Oakland) is the flies. This is so damn unsanitary in a restaurant, the cities really need to do something to address this (literally all of Shattuck Ave is infested and quite a bit of W. Grand - this is people FOOD, come on!) Anyway, if you're missing good pizza, hit Mama's Boy up. Great NY style pizza for the bay area. Just deducting a star as their online menu has a sizable price discrepancy from actual pricing. Menu says 26 for cheese pizza and 29 for pepperoni but the actual charge is 32 and 36 respectively. Crust was a little on the tough side, sauce was excellent. Also I liked the little containers of pickled serrano peppers they gave me but prefer crushed red pepper for pizza. Maybe they have some if you ask. read more

Probably one of the best slices of pizza I've had on this side of the Mississippi. The pizza was amazing. So light and crispy ( I ordered extra crispy and it was the right amount of crispness). I actually ordered the largest box pizza I could get and didn't realize how large their slices were but it didn't matter....I still took down 3 of those bad boys in one sitting. Service was great as far as I could see. I did order my pie to go but the guy was very helpful and I guess could tell it was my first time. Threw in some plates, napkins, and politely let me know where the cheese and crushed pepper were.
