Another local gem found on Yelp. Husband had biscuits and gravy as usual. When I tasted the gravy I wished I'd ordered the same. Fresh biscuits from their bakery. Lovely grilled potatoes. I had pumpkin almond granola and yogurt and a blueberry muffin. Yogurt and granola were great, muffin was surprisingly bland. Downside. Waitresses were having coffee when we walked in, took one of them nearly a minute to get up and seat us, but very friendly after that. Yes, they saw us...made eye contact. After reading Yelp reviews of you fine people out there, I took a visit to 210 State Street in Ukiah. I was driving since 3 am and they opened the door at 6 am when I showed up in town. It was a bit of discovery and journey to find this place (though it is not that hard) as I know Ukiah well having spent many years there and having a minor degree from Mendocino College. With that said it is nice to have an Apple Map application as a big help in the piloting to this place. I arrived at first go and was parked in front of the brick building almost on the corner of stephenson street and walked into the bakery side of the Cafe as it certainly did not look like a restaurant. I had to ask as I wanted breakfast on a plate and then was directed to go 4 feet north from the bakery door, and there recessed into the bricks of urban camoflage was the entrance to the restaurant it self. What a happy surprise to find this place in a rather old western building when horses and wagons were what people used to go about on. Wood hand crafted mahogany tables and chairs is my guess of what to sit in front of ... as a some what spartan but well sorted out establishment. Cello solo suite No 1 in G major by J.S. Bach was in the background. The order came up fairly fast. This place is California Fresh Classy Country, a new treat. I did the Benedict egg stuff but they do a wee bit different that I found enjoyable. The usual bit of Canadian bacon on an artisan bread that look similar to English muffin but was California fresh and baked next door. It was early and a few other muffins were up and if they made Fruit Spirals it would be local produce. Which is what is here, all California grown. The hollandaise sauce is french wisked by hand. If you want caramelized onion and pepper to go with the potatoes just ask. If it is easy adjustment or addition to do you will get it. The egg was poached firm but creamy, almost like a fluffy egg steak to cut into and spear with the fork. It disappears on the tongue never the less. Now last is the potato on the plate. They deep fry in a manner which is light, crunchy, and no appearance of taste or of oil. Though I am sure there is some on it. A rather amazing combination and me having the impression that I am going to enjoy dropping weight on this, as it is that healthy I did leave full; and happy to carry on with driving for the next 9 hours. So are you having an adventure in the country and want to stop by for some classy and well priced refreshment, this is a place to give some serious consideration in visiting. Be brave and bump into it as it appears from the background that it tends to disappear into. Your second go at visiting will not be a problem as you eye knows better now. After going to some of the other breakfast joints in town, this is my favorite. It is breakfast food with a real homemade flair. They use quality ingredients like apple wood smoked bacon and chicken apple sausage as a standard, triple cooked fried rosemary potatoes, organic strawberry jam, and good coffee. The portions are the perfect size as they don't overload your plate with cheap food like a diner would and the price is fair. Our service was very fast and pleasant. I will be back. read more

I'm giving stars for the wait staff, they are usually nice and decent at their job. But I dock 1 star for their sage potatoes (it's more like sage with a side of potato,way too much sage guys) and another star because I ordered the oven baked sourdough pancake. Mama's Has the best breakfast in Ukiah hands down. They also cater amazingly, Which helps with any training or presentation. But the most spectacular thing that mamas makes is their potatoes, Roasted with rosemary and salt they are the potatoes of your dreams. Your taste buds will thank you. Stopped in because of the yelp reviews for some breakfast. But sadly I didn't eat. Well couldn't eat. The potato hash bowl that I ordered was inedible! The potatoes seemed like they were held for too long then tossed back in the fryer then promptly forgotten about! It was a crunchy mess of nothing! The eggs that came with it were tasteless and I'm sorry don't advertise that something comes with avocado if you are basically using it as a garnish. We just had the worst experience at this restaurant. First we waited ten minutes before I had to ask for menus. We ordered pretty quickly then and it didn't take too long to get served-part of our meal. I had finished my breakfast and we were still waiting for the rest of my friend's food. We waited for 30 minutes, politely reminding them that we had not gotten our meal. Each time we asked the waitress said" It will be a few more minutes"...the last time the waitress walked by she blatantly and rudely ignored us. That was too much, we paid for my breakfast and the coffee.Told them we were leaving and why, and went to Starbucks and got excellent service. I would NOT recommend Mommas to anyone. The place looked cozy from the outside so we gave it a try. Unfortunately it was disappointing. The Cobb salad was the smallest example of its kind. Excellent food for a great price! I ordered a BLT with Avocado which was delicious! Their small potatoes with rosemary that my dish came with were excellent as well. The terrace outside is very nice when it's sunny outside. Even the coffee was very good, which is rare in breakfast joints. I'd like to find a bad thing to say about it, but I just can't. This place is a big joke ! It used to be good when it was the old owner . Now with the new ownership, it went downhill. The first time we went there I discovered a hair in my food . I pointed out to the skinny waitress who is always there and since then she seems to hate us every time we go there . I just ignored it and give her the benefit of the doubt . When we went back today they have a New Mexican young girl who waited on us . Every time we ask her something she rolled her eyes at us . She is very rude and unprofessional. To make things worst , she took the orders of the people who came after us maybe because they are Mexicans and another group came in and both groups who came after us got their food first . We had to walk out of there because my daughter was starving and they have to do that to us . Unacceptable and poor management! They didn't even bother to ask if we need more coffee or tea despite the fact that they already by passed us getting our order first . One star is even too much to give to this place. Great breakfasts and excellent coffee and pastries. There is a restaurant and, to the side with a separate street entrance, a walk up coffee bar, although you can also get coffee in the restaurant. I recommend the breakfasts, the coffees, and the pastries. Along with Black Oak, this is the best coffee in Ukiah; and, along with Schat's, the best pastries as well. read more

This place has tasty food and a lovely patio out back where one can sit and enjoy all kinds of menu options for both omnivores and herbivores. My big gripe about this place is their tendency to close at random. Today, for example, they are listed as open, but a sign on the door announces they decided to take the day off. We saw over a dozen people try to go in around the same time. This is not the first time this has happened to us when trying to eat here. Since we make the attempt infrequently, it leaves me wondering: do they do this often or do we just have bad timing? We want to go back to try more off the menu but you gotta be open. read more

The food was decent and it took quite some time just to get my coffee topped off. These are things I could overlook to give a restaurant a second chance. What I did not find acceptable was the fact that the ketchup and jam (held in small containers which are left on each table) were crawling with ants. When I informed one of the servers about the issue, she told me that she would pass it along and just left the containers on the table. I eventually just asked a different server to remove the ketchup and jam from our table. By the end of our meal, there were ants crawling onto the food we had ordered. Go to Stan's Maple Cafe. Mama's Cafe is my favorite spot in Ukiah for breakfast. The food is consistently good. I love the potato bowls. I haven't ordered anything that I did not enjoy I would give 5 stars if the service was a little better. The staff is friendly enough. I think every time they forget something that I ordered, usually a side of sausage or fruit, then I have to remind our server. No biggie and that's the kitchens fault, in part. I love their outdoor seating area and that they have books and toys to entertain my wild kiddos while we wait for our food. I recommend this place to anyone that asks! read more

This morning I ordered on their online order form from their website. We decided to try something new and their menu looked pretty good. I love that they had the option to order online & give a time to pick it up. However I don't believe they even read our order as when I got there the girl at the counter looked confused and asked if I called it in. When I told her I ordered online she looked it up & charged me & told me it would be ready soon. I waited and it was ready in about 8 minutes. Not too bad. But when I got home I noticed that the sides I ordered - bacon & sausage where not there. Then My husband ordered the roadrunner sandwich with the egg over easy & bacon & cheddar. The egg was scrambled with one small slice of bacon & no cheddar. He did say that the am potatoes were really good. My waffle was also really good. We may try this place again as the food was very good, but I would not order online again. The restaurant has a nice ambiance & garden out back. They also support local artists which is nice. Had a wonderful breakfast/lunch today, passing through Ukiah, and will make an effort to stop on any future trips through the area. Delicious food! The roasted potatoes have rosemary you can taste in each bite, and the scrambled eggs and toasted were equally tasty. Pleasantly surprised!! We ran into this place looking for another place. So glad we did. Hubby had basic breakfast with sourdough toast. People always think breakfast can't be messed up but we have experienced places that can't roast toast or cook eggs . This is NOT one of those places. This cafe does breakfast right !!
