I've been here a few times before and had ordered their House Special Ma Ma noodle soup. They were able to make it nonspicy for me which I appreciated. I remember it being really good. I liked all the toppings that it came with! This time I ordered the wonton and dumpling noodle soup. It came with 3 wonton, 2 dumplings, and some bok choy. Not sure if it was because I did takeout and my noodle soup was overcooking in its container, but the dumpling skin was mushy and falling apart from the meaty party of the dumpling, and the bok choy was also a dull green color. Either it was overcooked or old bok choy. They tasted fine, except maybe one was a bit bitter. I was also expecting egg noodle, but it came default udon noodles (you can ask them to change noodles, I just didn't ask). The broth wasn't flavorful either. I came to grab an order of the shrimp dumpling noodle soup to go. The place is very small, but there is an area by the window with chairs to sit and eat. Cute small shop tucked away in the corner of a street. The restaurant is small maybe barely 500 sq ft but on a cold rainy day when we visited, it felt welcoming and warm. I was craving dumplings in this cold weather so I stopped by Mama's Noodle House! With features in the NYT, they pride themselves on their home cooking, soup noodles, and dumplings. I got try their 3 dumplings (2 in soup form, 1 in fried form). Factoring the differences in preparation, I still think my favorite was the pork and chives ones just because I liked its seasoning profile better. The wontons were different from the ones I'm use to at more traditional canto places. This one is more pork-forward (less shrimp and white pepper flavors). The N4 I got was without noodles but I still got a generous serving of dumplings and veggies. The dumpling wrapping was fine - got a little mushy towards the end but still encased everything nicely. My partner's mama house special noodle was solid. The braised beef pieces were tender and well-seasoned. Noodles, fish balls, and the soup were good and pretty standard. Be sure to try them with their chili oil!! Not only is it warmed up but also with meat pieces packed with soy bean and chili flavors. It was okay in taste, but probably could use more curry to give it more flavor. Also tried their much touted dumplings, which is their best selling item. It's a super tiny place, with some low counter seating along the walls of the small dining area. The restaurant is the size of a shoebox. I'm surprised at how much food they're able to crank out. Not only because of the size of the restaurant but because it's essentially a 2-person business. The husband and wife are cooking, taking orders, handling payments, everything. I would like to see them have more cooks or help, but honestly, this restaurant won't fit it. The rice cooker is out in front of house by where customers sit and eat lol. I did have to compete with people waiting in store and the pile of online food orders. So even though I ordered ahead of time on the phone, I still ended up waiting 45 minutes for my food when I got there. I can't blame them really because they're so popular, but if I didnt witness how swamped they were and how small the space was, I'd definitely be upset. I'm fairly surprised I forgot to review what has been one of my favorite pandemic gems. This tiny little hole in the wall is run by the sweetest couple-- the husband stays behind the wok and the wife is gregarious and takes care of taking orders. Mama's Noodle House, even during the pandemic, was always busy with takeout orders and on my most recent visit, I am happy to report that nothing has changed (except for a very minor price hike). Some of my favorite things to order include the minced pork noodle ($8) which comes with cilantro and bean sprouts, and a healthy heap of their housemade chili oil atop fresh, chewy handmade noodles, and the basil beef stew ho fun ($11) which is a spicy stir-fried dish of housemade flat rice noodles (ho fun), onions, peppers, Thai basil, and tender chunks of beef brisket. Don't skip on their honey lemon drink ($1.50) either which is quite possible the BEST honey lemon drink I've ever had. The owner showed me the secret, which is to soak lemon slices in a honey syrup mixture. read more

A very quaint and warm little noodle shop literally owned by a mama and a pop. The broth was delicious and the beef stew was meaty and tender! So I know that this review is departing from the norm and I hope to have my mind changed the next time I choose to visit, but this first time was unfortunately a disappointment to my husband and I. We were excited to try this place as we love noodles and anything authentic seems worth a try. The noodles really were delicious! So fresh and you could tell it wasn't packaged noodles. I got the minced pork noodles which was SPI-CY! (For me anyway lol but I still ate the whole thing =D). He got what was supposed to be the Ho fun noodles with chicken. Here is where the issue was, he ended up getting the regular noodles (that looked like udon like mine), but they gave him this dish in a soup which was totally wrong and not what he ordered (he did double check when he got in). They also left the scallions and parsley/cilantro in that we asked to be removed so that also altered the taste of the dishes negativity for us. It was terrible because we were both super hungry and it was too far away to make the trip back so he picked on some noodles and left the rest. I ate all of mine, but didn't enjoy as much as I would've hoped. The owners were super sweet and the noodles were delicious so I'm willing to try this place again and hopefully they get the orders right next time! 'Mama,' as one of the owners is fondly called, and her husband are chefs from Guangzhou, China and immigrated to Amsterdam in the 1970's. Mr. Liang spent over a decade cooking in Thai and Korean restaurants, and brought some of that influence onto the menu of Mama's Noodle House in Bensonhurst, which they opened just a couple years ago with a focus on hand pulled noodles and dumplings. On any given morning you can find 'Mama' making fresh dumplings, her fingers moving with speedy dexterity. It's pretty typical for them to sell out of these dumplings come afternoon. The neighborhood is more than privy to the delights of this small kitchen. I visited with a couple of friends recently, this just one stop on a food tour of Bensonhurst, and while our eyes were wider than our stomachs, we were realistic with our ordering and got just the scallion pancakes and a beef noodle soup with hand pulled noodles. Mama and her husband made polite conversation in Mandarin with me as they prepared the dishes. The scallion pancakes came with a fragrant chili oil that came with ground meat, and the noodle soup was large enough for the four of us to have generous spoonfuls of. While I wish we could've sampled more of the menu, just knowing the story, seeing the love and care that is put into the food, and getting to chat with the purveyors of these amazing dishes left a lasting impression on me. Let's start with the house special noodle. The portion was pretty big and I wasn't able to finish it by myself. I ordered medium spicy but would probably get it more spicy next time. Instead there are some side table/shelves and some office chairs they prob found. Besides that let's get to the main part of the review where it matters the most...the food! Started off with the scallion pancakes. They came out super hot and super crunchy! Bit greasy but it was a rough work week so I was in the idgaf mood. Next up was the spicy wontons. These were fantastic. Each one was filled with a got portion of pork and shrimp. Surprisingly it wasn't as spicy. I prob would have preferred it if it was a bit more spicy. Lastly came the noodles. This dish reminded me of Dan Dan noodles. Noodles were nicely cooked, plenty of minced pork all around, the shower if cilantro top and bean sprouts make it complete. You can ask for more spicy if you desire more of a kick. Was yummy but a bit greasy as you get closer to the bottom where there sauce is. Def still good though. Finally (not pictured) i washed it all down with some Chinese herbal tea (served cold). Service was good since we were the only ones there (Friday afternoon). So food came out super quick.
