I gave it two stars because the food is delicious but they run out and give scraps of what they have when they do not have enough. Food delivery is late 80% of the time; late by almost an hour. Do not order delivery. The food is mediocre. And, after an hour I called and they said everything was ready and was leaving soon. After half an hour (a full 1.5 hours after I ordered) I called back and the food still hadn't even left yet! Great food, horrible service! Every time I go in here I catch an attitude. And they seem to be having problems with cabbage lately... this is my 3rd visit in the last month as I live 2 blocks away, I eat here often. Like I said, food is good I'm just sick of getting treated like shit and I frequent this place and always tip. The first visit, they had no cabbage at the end of the night. No problem, could have used less attitude about it, but ordered my food and moved on. Second visit, no cabbage at 6:00 on a Saturday. I chose not to eat here that night. This past visit, I ordered the cabbage and they didn't put it in my order. So I went home and started ordering my meal to find there was no cabbage. So I walked back to the restaurant to get the cabbage that I paid for. Seemed like a good opportunity to walk my service dog. Could have been a quick easy visit, they just had to fill a container with cabbage and send me on my way. But they insisted that I step outside with my dog before they do anything to accommodate me. Even though I showed them the paperwork that legally states my service dog is allowed everywhere I'm allowed to be. None of this even had to be a discussion if they just scooped some cabbage in a cup and sent me on my way, but they feel the need to argue with their customers about everything. Please learn that in AMERICA the customer is always right and service dogs have more rights than your illegal ass. Tasty food served in decent portions. My issue has to do with the fact that when you order rice and peas......YOU ALMOST ALWAYS GET ALL RICE. The cabbage and the plantains are tasty sides, but you will get an abundance of white rice. read more

I ordered delivery. Took abit of a while but then again, it was peak lunch hour. Anyway, I got the curry Goat which came with rice, cabbage and a few pieces of plantain. I love plantain so I ordered extra. Also ordered a Sorrel Ginger drink The Goat: 4/5 - tender, juice, more bones than I would have liked though The Plantain 3/5 - Neither sweet nor salty... for me, plantain better be on or the other. Savory with lots of salt and kinda crispy (green), or soft and sweep (ripe). This was in some weird middle lane.. The Rice: 4.5/5: good. very good.. The Cabbage 4/5: I liked it..texture and all The Sorrel Ginger: 3/5 Ok.. I kinda expected this to be made from scratch but it wasn't. kind of disappointed. Was it bad? no, but to me if you are a Caribbean restaurant and offer Sorrel, please let it be fresh. But good over all experience and I will for sure order again. Unfortunately the quality and flavor has gone down.. It's a problem when I order pepper steak and have to add all types of my own seasonings to it to make it taste better. I'll be looking for another place to go to from now on. read more

We trekked or subwayed all the way from Times Square to MaMas on 121 st east. The food was great. We had jerked chicken and medium curry chicken. The curry chicken came with a side of Mac and cheese that my daughter loved. The portions are big as we had to box our jerk chicken. Both were fabulous. Food is awesome. However they lose a star because the last time I ordered from here they showed up 2 hours later with a free soda for my troubles. And the delivery guy didn't have change for a $20 total. Just had their delivery- what a relief to find good food in the neighborhood that wasn't sushi, pizza, Mexican or Indian and isn't too greasy! Sometimes it can be a bit messy when delivered and a little too salty so I had to take off a start for that. read more

So sad to write this update after enjoying my initial experience with Mama's. I tried so many times with this place but after my latest order I must admit this place has gone down the drain. First problem I ordered red snapper meal over seamless only to be called a 30minutes later and told there was no more snapper. my meal came up to roughly 16 bucks I told them instead of the hassle just give me ackee & saltfish and a order of jerk chicken. My meal was horrible and I was given the scraps of the ackee and saltfish. I no way got my 16 bucks worth. I called and complained to both seamless and the restaurant and was told by a very polite boy that the owner will contact me back. After calling Mama's back on 3 different occasion I was told by the same young man he personally gave my information to the owner and he's not sure why I didn't get a call back. I gave up until about a week ago (week agooooo)...... craving some jamaican food I decided to give them another chance this time I ordered a medium oxtail and jerk patty.... My food arrived cold, the delivery boy had no change at all, there was only 4 little oxtails in my platter, the rice was drowned in tasteless gravy similar to the place I can't stand golden crust and on top of that my patty was stale...... very different from my first review! I called Mama's and I was told they have a new chef and they would send me over some more oxtails and not charge me for the patty. the oxtails was not flavorful at all! Thing about it I ranted and raved to my friends and they tried Mama's recently and was confused because they did not enjoy the food.... well I guess I'm still happy I was able to experience Mama's when it was the bomb however I will never order from here again. read more

I always order the lunch special from them , their oxtail or curry chicken here is the best ! It also comes with two sides. I usually chose cabbage with rice and beans if not I get plantains with Mac and cheese . If I am not mistaken it also comes with one beverage which is great . I never eat in I always carry out so I do not know how the service is in the restaurant. But I never have any complaints my food always comes hot and very tasty . If the gentlemen forgets something they always give me extra side of something or bring it to me if didn't already finish my food. I usually order with my co-workers for lunch because one order is not enough for them to deliver which is understandable. I appreciate that they threat me like a good loyal customer and listen to any concerns I give them about improving their delivery service . Apart from that they have brought me dessert to show their gratitude and appreciation for me as their customer. Delicious caribbean food, but word to the wise pay in cash because they ALWAYS forget to deliver something from your order. Popular dishes are often sold out the later you order at night. Hard chicken and bean-less rice and beans! I've eaten here before and while the food isn't great, I always felt I could at least enjoy it. Well not this time. The stew chicken was hard and had hardly any flavor, just hot. Typically stew chicken melts off the bone at Jamaican restaurants, not this case. Very unpleasant. I asked for typical rice and beans and got just a heaping of whit rice with literally 1 or 2 red beans. My cabbage was substituted with plantains, as opposed to getting both. With all the other places to eat in East Harlem, I don't think I will be returning. read more

My friend and I got a small curry chicken and small jerk chicken and split them. The portions are very generous so this was more than enough for us. Great prices, and the jerk chicken was especially amazing (the spiciest I've had! so good!). Also the service was really fast and everyone was friendly. I'll definitely go back. read more

I may have to update this review. The jerk chicken was not spicy. Idk how you can be a Jamaican restaurant and not get jerk chicken right. I usually judge a place off the jerk chicken had it not been for the reviews I wouldn't have tried the oxtails. And this place would've gotten a 1. They didn't throw gravy over the rice. Oxtail were good. Gravy was delicious. Wish there was less rice and more meat and cabbage. Wasn't more than 6 pieces. read more

Delicious! Since moving to the city, I was a little skeptical about being able to find good Caribbean food in the area. I decided to try Mama's at the suggestion of my gf...and honestly, I'm pretty impressed. I ordered the oxtail dinner (with rice and peas). The oxtails were cooked well - tender and extremely flavorful, with a hint of spice, just how I like it. My gf ordered the fried tilapia. Initially, we were worried that it was a tad salty, but after a few more bites, were pleased to find that it might've just been because the tail of the fish was extremely thin and didn't have any flesh to cut the seasoning. The rest of the fish - the more meatier parts - were just fine. We also ordered the Mac and cheese. My gf wasn't a huge fan because it appeared to have a hint of sweetness to it. However, I found it to be a very very slight hint and though the mac and cheese wasn't the best I've had, it was still pretty good. I'd certainly recommend this place. read more
