Very friendly service and good Chinese food. The Lo mein was tasty, and not greasy like you find in most joints. The steamed shrimp dumplings (which also have pork) were flavorful, though they took longer to make than the noodle dishes. Finally, the woman at the counter made a recommendation that was not on the menu - a stew of handmade noodles with tomato and egg, which was delicious. I highly recommend asking for it. With a bit more lead time, I would also want to try the soup dumplings on a future visit. We look forward to coming back. read more

This hole in the wall restaurant was actually so good. Being Chinese, I grew up eating these types of dishes and felt everything was authentic, delicious and exactly how I remember. The biang biang noodles were especially a hit. The handmade noodles were the perfect texture and the sauce was so delicious I wish I had the recipe so I could make it on my own. The restaurant is very casual so you order at a touch screen and can either dine in or take it to go. Most seem to want to order take out here, I felt we were the only party sitting and talking the whole time. I had been craving some biang biang noodles and heard Mama's Taste was worth a go. As usual, I didn't have much restraint and went with three items: spicy wontons, steamed shrimp dumplings, and biang biang noodles with beef. My top pics were the biang biang noodles and the spicy wontons. The wontons were on the smaller side, but there were a good amount. Spicy, but slightly sweet oil/sauce. The noodles were similarly tingly, though they had more of a slight tartness to their spicy chili oil. I probably could have gone just noodles and veggies, but the sliced beef added in was tasty. The shrimp dumplings were good, especially with their sauce, but it was closer to a pork dumpling with a large piece of shrimp in it. I was thinking a filling more similar to a har gow. One thing... Those dumplings were JUICY and fresh. My own personal issue... I want to try everything and when I go on my own, it gets expensive for one person. The three dishes (considering I had the beef add-on for the noodles) were just slightly over $40. Splitting with a group would work and I was quite stuffed for the rest of the day. read more

A solid spot for Chinese food that's on the way to GMU! I decided to stop by here on Halloween after class since I kept seeing the suggestion to try this place from Yelp. You can order online, via their kiosk, or via telephone. The pan fried dumplings were what convinced me to go, and I was not disappointed. The sesame chicken was super delicious and I chose the fried rice for the side - and that was super tasty too! The beef lo mein was good.. but even better refried the next day! :) Even when it was Halloween in the evening, it was still pretty busy inside at like 7:30 PM. December 2022 - COVID Review: I saw this place pop up on my Yelp suggestions when I was in Old Town Fairfax and decided to give it a try due to other reviews. It's a small hole in the wall, but that's what makes their food so good! You can either order at the counter or on one of the ordering screens for dine in or takeout. I was in the mood for noodles so I got the beef lo mein and was completely shocked at how good it was! The noodles were just slightly thick and had a perfect bite to them (my favorite). The beef that accompanied it was also tender. You can choose to adjust your spice level for all of the food that you order as well. Highly recommend this place! read more

Food is amazing! No one compares to their spicy wontons! I've searched elsewhere as we are moving away from the area but they are the best and I will definitely miss them. I can't tell you how surprised I am by the service at Mama's Taste. The food has never been very good but the convenience kind of made us support them. We really try to support local small businesses when we can but the people who work there are really rude. The first time the woman was rude, we chalked it up to her having a bad day. This time we decided to dine in and the woman at the counter LITERALLY argued with me about a plastic plate. I just asked for another plate and she charged me a dollar!! For the plate pictured below she literally charged me a dollar. I paid it so that my wife would have a plate to use with her food. I can't tell you how shocked I was by this request. The food has also become particularly greasy and the quality has gone downhill. Food was alright - portions weren't bad either for the price (prices were typical for the area on average). However, what made me dock off points was the service. When we walked in, the lady up front didn't greet us. We said hello first and it took a while for her to acknowledge us, and even then - it was in a not so warm way. While we were eating, we noticed she greeted other Caucasian customers warmly and even engaged in conversation with them. I don't know if this was by accident, or maybe it was just an off day - but the service she gave us wasn't a good feeling. Asked them if they served Diet Coke, and the lady said "no" without even bothering to look up. When we looked at the refrigerator, they had Diet Coke in stock. Also, we ordered sweet and sour chicken and it didn't even come with sauce. It was just the packets of sauce that usually go with soy sauce. Other Chinese places I've been to atleast serve food with actual sweet and sour sauce on the side. It was literally just the chicken. When we asked about it, the lady said it was supposed to be like that and just gave us 2 small plastic sauce packets. I saw someone else post a review of the sweet and sour chicken, and they had a plastic container with sauce on the side. Meaning we didn't even get what we paid for. She wouldn't even admit that they forgot it. Also, if you plan on coming during the summer to dine in, don't even bother. It was very hot with no AC. I wouldn't come here again. I was craving dumplings and found a spot nearby. I can only comment on the dumplings, but I was a bit disappointed. I ordered the pan-seared option, and while they looked seared on one side, the taste and texture were just average. The dumplings were just very gummy, and if you didn't eat them in one bite, the "seared" side didn't break apart properly. In hindsight, I think steamed dumplings would've been a better choice. It felt like these were premade, seared ahead of time, and just reheated when ordered. For 12 dumplings and 2 sodas, the total was $25.00, which didn't seem worth it after tasting them. read more

First time here. Seems to be a popular take out place. They do have several tables for eating in which I did since I'm from out of the area. You can order on tablets or from the counter. The parking lot is spacious, but the shop itself is quite small and narrow. However, it's a clean and friendly environment. I ordered the Orange Chicken for lunch, but it tasted more like General Tso's Chicken--nothing like orange chicken. The rice was cooked well, but it was plain brown rice with no seasoning, so you can imagine how bland it was. What really surprised me was that this place has the potential to be a great spot, but the service fell short. The lady at the counter was on her phone too much. I placed my order at 1:18, and by 1:40, when I checked, my food had been sitting on the shelf the whole time. I can't believe I even tipped her. Overall, it's okay but not my first choice. Although new, this is your of the mill American Chinese take out food - nothing special. The food tastes to be on the sweeter side than salty. The food received doesn't consistently match the menu description. The restaurant forgot to pack rice with our dishes. We may be back once more to try more dishes before making the final call. Read some of the good reviews on Yelp and thought the pictures of the food looked good so went in for a late dinner. There was one family eating and they were quite loud - but nothing the store can really do about that. Luckily, they left soon after so we got to eat most of our food in quiet. I mention this because not only were they rude, they were also really messy. The lady taking orders and cleaning up did a really thorough job of cleaning up after them which was nice because you feel like the table you're sitting at also got the same treatment! Now the food... We got one order of soup dumplings, one noodle soup, and one biang biang noodles with beef (thanks to the Yelper who posted an appetizing pic). The noodles in the noodle soup were the soft thick type (not my favorite) but the broth was really good and flavorful without being overpowering in any seasoning. There were a lot of veggies on top and a very healthy serving of shrimp. The biang biang noodles were spicy with good flavor and the added beef was tender and tasty. Lastly, the soup dumplings were seasoned appropriately so we didn't need to use the soy sauce and the filling was really good. Overall, their portion sizes are quite large and they didn't skimp on anything on any of our dishes. Will definitely come back and try their other dishes. Best dumplings in the DMV? Well, definitely the best I've had so far! But let me back up. Don't come to this place for any kind of fine dining experience: while the place is open, bright, and clean, you order on a machine and get your own water from water cooler. In fact, ordering out may be your best bet because they bring the food out steaming hot and it could probably use the time to cool off. But the food is pretty much the best Chinese I've had around here for a while. I got the general Tsos chicken lunch special, subbed in white meat and medium spicy. It was some of the best gen Tsos I've had in a long time. I saw that the place specializes in dumplings so I had to try some. I got the pan fried shrimp. I have not had dumplings this good in YEARS. came here based on a recommendation. the biang biang noodles were not that special...very dry and flavorless. the hot and sour soup was nice and warm and flavorful. the general tso was very delicious and soft! will need to order more chicken dishes next time. the lomein was slightly dry too and not much flavor so maybe pass on the noodles next time. overall better than most chinese take out spots. will be back again to try other dishes. read more
