We tried all of Alex's empanadas today. They were all excellent. I appreciate that he is a sauce guy--we are sauce people too so it worked out well. He gave us 4 different kinds of sauces and each was unique and flavorful. The green is fairly spicy. My kids liked the white sauce. The biggest compliment I think I can personally give to a chef is when my whole family, including my food picky kids, rave about the food. That is what happened here. We shared a table with a nice older veteran man who was eating a Colombian hot dog--it looked really good. The man lives 2 miles from this food truck and comes by daily for the hot dog. Before leaving we already agreed that we would be coming back tomorrow. I would like to point out that almost all of the negative reviews here have to do with people not knowing how this food truck is run. I was a little annoyed when I stopped by last night and it was closed when Google said it would be open. You need to text him earlier in the day and he will send you the menu for that day. Each day he has different ingredients and therefore different menu items. Text him what you want and he will let you know the estimated time he will be opening. He told us to inform him when we are 15 minutes away and he will start making the food. It worked out well. read more

I came here and brought a good friend of mine from the east coast along with her family. I was so excited to share with them a little bit of what we have here on the island. They're from the East Coast and are Colombian and Puerto Rican. I was very disappointed with the taste. First and most obvious is the empanadas weren't fried they were air fried! I mean come on?! I understand wanting to be healthier but you don't air fry empanadas! The outside was like dried play dough, is the best I can describe it. Second, the chicken was dry and had no flavor. All the other stuffing we had was dry too with little flavor as well. I'm not sure id drive to Waikiki for this, you can probably find something else more flavorful and appetizing. Let me start by saying that this spot is definitely worth trying! The food & the four sauces were all delicious. Finding good Colombian food is quite difficult but this spot will not disappoint. My fiancé is Colombian and he loved the empanadas!! We also tried the hotdog which was great. He makes his own buns for it. The reason I'm deducting a star is because of the inconvenience of eating here. You have to text him the morning of to tell him you want to order food. He will then send you the menu available for that day & then you have to select a time to pick it up. It was quite difficult trying to plan our day around picking up the food. The first night we tried to eat here we waited around to get helped only to tell us we couldn't just order food on the spot. Busy, long wait, the guy who runs the food truck is super friendly, he has some tables set up for people to sit and enjoy their empanada and arepas on site! the guy is super cool and he also provide his number so you can call in advance for business hours and empanada flavors of the day. all empanadas come with these side sauces SAUCES PINK- sweet mayo and spices GREEN-spicy with cilantro WHITE CREAMY-ranch like and spices RED- not spicy, vinaher like tomatoes sauce with cilantro Air fried, all the food is air fried!! so much healthier and the taste is amazing! I did not notice the difference at all as far as flavor goes. SWEET CORN AREPA - pretty ok and true to any other arepa I have had. The awesome thing about it is that the arepa is not oily at all!! DOMINO EMPANADA - beans and cheese, pretty nice, taste very good. I wouldn't say is the best one here but o can tell u that I would have another one when I come back here. ARROZ CON POLLO- pretty good I must say! Very filling so get that if u are very hungry. The empanadas have a super buttery crust. Kind of tastes like they should be out of a Parisian bakery. The garlic sauce was just superb. I wished I had tried note of their sauces if they were anywhere as good as the garlic sauce. Very decent value. Nice people. Oh I also had a Colombian soda. Very interesting. Just amazing! I texted Alex to see what he had for the day and ordered ahead. He gave me a message five minutes prior to pick up time to see where I was so that he could make my food as fresh as possible. When he got there, he was deep frying my empanadas, and as he was packing my order, he explained everything about his food, sauces etc. He truly cares about making the best food for his customers. Everything was absolutely delicious! My husband loves Cuban sandwiches and he really enjoyed the cubano from here. I really enjoyed the beef and potato empanada and sweet yellow corn aperas. I've been wanting to try this place for a while and I finally got around to walking around this area to locate this take out spot. Alex was very nice and friendly and explained the difference between his two different empanadas of the day. I ended up getting both and it was delicious!!! He says the variety of empanadas change daily and I was so lucky that my favorite beef were the choices for the day. Another thing I have to mention are the amazing sauces that he makes for these empanadas. Wow, the mixture of the white garlic sauce and the green chili was so delicious. Alex was busy with phone orders and I had to wait about 15min. or so for my order of 8 pieces, I definitely recommend calling in the order to pick up. So we ended up meeting with a friend from up North here in Waikiki and he told us about this empanada place, lol so turns out it's a truck right next to the pizza one we had gone to the night before. When we got there we were able to order sofrito chicken, vegan potato and beef and potato. The sofrito one was so delicious and so full of flavor! All of them were really good. This is no fast food truck, it's made to order air fried empanadas. If available, Alex also makes Cubano Sandwiches he bakes his own bread. Mami' s just happened to be about 3 minutes walking from our hotel. Fisrt night here my husband and I walked over. The was a little line and a little bit of a wait after ordering but it was definitely worth it. We tried 3 different kinds of Empanadas, black bean and cheese, Colombian potatoe and Puerto Rican beef. My personal favorite was the Colombian potatoe then black been and cheese and then the Puerto Rican beef. None of them were bad.. at all !! You get 3 different sauces with them. The green one being a little spicy and the red one i couldn't figue but the flavor but .. it was delicious. There were a few other kinds of empanadas and other things on the menu. We ordered three chicken empanadas and not only were they really small (probably the smallest empanadas I've ever had), but they were super dry. Each empanada is cooked to perfection. The texture of the crust was amazing and the insides were all so flavorful! I especially loved the meat and potato one. We bought a bunch for our whole family and shared, and everyone loved them - even the kids! Not to mentioned the owner uses a corn-based (gluten free) dough! She was so nice, helpful, and patient with us trying to figure out how many we needed. The truck is located in between some building structures, so plan on parking a little bit further. (Eating there is tricky since it's just a table outside his truck, there isn't a lot of room, so not a lot of parties can eat there) - what time you will be there (text him before pick up so he can prep it for you) - your order for that evening Everything is home made. I don't know if I've ever mentioned this but I love food trucks! I wanted to check out some local places for LatinX Heritage month and this came up on the search. I walked up, text for the menu and it was sent quickly. I got 4 different kinds of empanadas: potato, Mac n cheese, chicken, and beef and potato. I also got a strawberry horchata. The potato empanada was my favorite, it was like a samosa empanada and with the spicy green sauce it was amazing. The Mac n cheese had an unexpected flavor, it wasn't super cheesy but it tasted really good. The potato and beef was just like the potato, it didn't even need the beef. The chicken had a nice spice to it. The strawberry horchata was a surprise, I have never heard of strawberry horchata. The chef told me that it's made in house and instead of cinnamon they blend the fruit. It was so refreshing, I drank the whole thing so fast. It's more like some guy's satellite kitchen in an alley where if you try to order an empanada, he looks at you like you're crazy. Then he explains how you are supposed to text him first thing in the morning (with no website for contact info) to place your order to pick up at the end of the day. In fact, any menu you see online (like here on Yelp) is confusing to him because he doesn't even know what his menu is because he doesn't know what ingredients he has. He explained all of this to me verbatim. So no take out. Plan your meal 12 hours in advance. And don't walk up to this food truck thinking that you can order anything without being berated about how silly you are for thinking that you could walk up to a food truck and order food. Cute little food truck tucked down a side street just steps away from Marriott and Aston hotels at Waikiki beach. Delicious comfort food! Menu changes frequently based on ingredient availability. We sampled a few different flavors. The chicken arroz was excellent and the vegan potato was out of this world! The cheese filled was one of the tastiest items we ate all week! The chili cheese was more like sloppy joe flavor, and the spinach mushroom was a little too wet. But all of the others were fabulous. They were out of some of the vegetarian options, which was disappointing. Tried the beef, chicken, and beans&cheese empanadas, and all of the sauces. Chicken was my favorite, although all of them lacked flavor and were pretty dry.
