We visited the Lawrence Township location, conveniently located right off Route 1, and even on a gloomy day, the bold red and yellow design instantly added a burst of energy. Their menu is packed with flavorful halal favorites including gyro, falafel, chicken, fresh toppings, and signature sauces, all customizable as a platter or sandwich. I went with the falafel platter and loved every bite. The falafel was perfectly cooked with a crispy exterior and tons of flavor, served over rice with lettuce, tomatoes, and warm pita bread. I added a little of their famous hot sauce and quickly learned they do not play around when it comes to spice. Luckily, the rice and fresh veggies balanced the heat perfectly. Next time, I definitely want to try one of their craft refresher beverages to cool things down. I ordered takeout, but the inside has a lively, modern atmosphere, and they even offer dog friendly outdoor tables for anyone dining with their pup. Food was good, but not as good as I remember a few years ago. As everything else, the serving size was smaller and wanted to try the new lamb beef, Gyro, but that wasn't an offering for this event. The free toppings are the onions and green peppers and tomatoes. The olives are extra. The falafel was a bit overcooked because they are fried from frozen and you have to request for the side of tahini. They don't just give you it. Service was great and informative on the options available for this event. Next time I do want to try the lamb Gyro mix with beef. I do miss the old school 53rd and 6th truck experience, but it is good that they have expanded beyond that one location such that it can be enjoyed elsewhere. This location is pretty conveniently located, and the food is on point, on brand with what I recall from those days outside the Hilton in Manhattan. Definitely much pricier than it was in those days, which is like most anything else. The app didn't work hardly at all, though, or maybe I'm just ignorant about what it was supposed to do. I got the falafel balls, which was tasty albeit a small serving (two of them), and the lamb and beef gyro bowl, which was good. I may be back to this location again in the future, especially with hope of using my rewards this time. Service is either through the app or just at the counter, and it's a fast casual spot kind of reminiscent of Chipotle... except not as fast or convenient. The place is super cool, I was greeted immediately upon arrival for lunch. There's outdoor and indoor dining. I tried the spicy BBQ chicken platter, rice, salad and pita bread. I mean this small plate was packed high. I literally ate for 2 days. The flavor was delicious and I will definitely be back for more. I even tried the baklava cheesecake. A decent lunch option in the area. I got the falafel platter which was a bit pricier than I expected given it only had four falafel, but there was a generous amount of rice, pita, and tomatoes. The falafel were freshly fried upon ordering though overall somewhat overcooked and on the greasier side. You can choose from a few sauces, including white sauce and hot sauce - I really wish hummus was free given it was a vegetarian platter but it was unfortunately an upcharge. Ordered from DoorDash and it arrived quickly. I got a honey sriracha falafel sandwich and my friend got a chicken platter. The portion size felt just right to fill me up but price wise I would have been happier if it cost slightly less. The taste and quality of ingredients was incredible. The bread melts in your mouth and has the texture you salivate for. The meat and veggies had the right firmness and crunch. My only issue is that the rice felt a bit bland and I needed to put the white sauce on to give my sandwich enough flavor. read more

Came here pretty late at night for dinner. We used to go to NY and stand in those long lines to get the platter so it brought back memories. I was happy to see the menu has expanded since then. We got the chicken and gyro platter, and the falafel platter with lots of white sauce and 1-2 lines of spicy sauce. We also got the mango ice tea and the chocolate baklava cheesecake. Food was tasty. Was surprised at the falafel - it was nice and crunchy, and freshly made for us! The chicken and gyro platter wasn't as warm but still good. I miss being able to add the white sauce on my own because I feel like it's never enough. However, the lady at the counter did add a good amount. Drink was unique and I liked the green mango taste ...it's not usually something you get when you ask for mango ice tea. The baklava cheesecake was yummy. They have a nice (but small) outdoor seating area. Inside is nice and clean. It's located in a shopping complex so it can get crowded in that area. Iced tea was good :) The wrap was okay and that could be my fault since I added some extra things to it but I felt that the hummus was just slapped on carelessly. It wasn't evenly spread throughout the wrap and got everywhere in the foil. I usually get the platter and that's probably why....slightly less mess Otherwise, I have enjoyed the food every time I have gone to a Halal guys. read more

Located at the Mercer Mall but really outside shops around them. They have plenty of parking and the place is clean. Everything is made to order, I usually get the platter with beef and falafel. The falafel takes about an extra 5 minutes to cook so expect some more waiting. They have soda machine and some of their teas as well. Not a great experience this time and I have been a fan of The Halal Guys since they opened this location. I even patronized the pushcart in Manhattan before they were franchised On this particular visit I ordered some food to go, paid and was handed the food. However, when I asked for my craft mango drink that I ordered they said it will be right up. Almost 10 minutes went by and I was told that the craft mango lemonade machine was having trouble and they were waiting for the guy to come that knows how to work it. Finally, he came and made the drink but at this point my food was sitting for 15-20 minutes since it was ready. When I arrived at home I found the falafel was so overcooked it was burned (how does this happen in a deep fryer?) and also dry and tasteless. The rice wasn't up to the usual standard either. I was so disappointed I indicated in the email survey I was sent that I had a negative experience and explained exactly what happened. I never received a response despite indicated I would like a follow-up. After a few weeks, I decided to send an email to the company about my experience including the pictures of the burnt food and also noted that this must have been an anomaly because we usually have a great experience. I received a generic response stating that they made a mistake and they hope I come back soon. I would have expected at least a coupon or an invitation to come back for a remake. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed. So much so that I won't go out of my way to visit The Halal Guys anymore and just stick to the local falafel/halal spots in the future. read more

I've been meaning to try this for quite some time - almost years honestly. Admittingly, my cravings for falafel over rice kinda decreased over time since I understood the hype back in New York City in the early 2010s after graduating college. The original Halal Guys - the one I've had a few times - hit the mark early on. However, I don't know what happened over time, but the craving disappeared. Maybe it's also because I'm enjoying falafels over salads & more Mediterrenean-based fillings including hummus, feta, et al. Therefore, when Halal Guys expanded to franchises, I didn't get the urge to immediately try them. So I found a time to get this recently. Falafel over rice - but this time they have a honey sriracha special. Interesting. To be quite honest, I didn't really taste the honey in the falafel. Maybe there was some sriracha, but it was mixed in with the other flavors and the white sauce, green sauce, and a dab of the hot sauce. I don't know. The falafel was good, not gonna lie. I think it kinda felt the same to me as it did in the past..... I now think that the other fixins of rice, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. (not the sauces) don't add enough to me. At a price point of $12 for a small platter, it's kinda normal prices, but it's nothing to necessarily wow me to return frequently. So is this 3 or 4 stars? IDK - I'll give them 4. Very yellow! Good baklava too. Go there. Also re: other reviewers who said this was too basic or non-authentic, I beg to differ. You don't always need an avalanche of menu items to make yourself feel like an insider. Sometimes simplest is best...and I believe that is what you get here. The gentleman who took our order must have been new since he wasn't familiar with the menu and his coworkers had to tell him how to plate/portion the food. Not that there's anything wrong with being a new employee but food was just okayyy. Flavor was there but our food should have been hotter. We came in around 7 which is why I'm guessing our food was luke warm and the pita was a a bit stiff. The trays also needed to be filled since we had the last few scoops of food. One correction for management is to change the menu as it says some toppings (onions, Olives, green peppers) are free however when I started adding them an employee said toppings are .59 cents. I'd come back to give this restaurant another shot since again the flavor was there but perhaps we came in on an off day. read more

Not a gyro guy? Idk. This was my first time EVER having one. The pita wrap was warm but the contents of the beef were room temp and pretty dry. Is that normal? Idk. I can only go off my personal experience and how I see it. The gyro though was plentiful. Back in the day, 30 years ago, The Halal Guys had originally started with their food cart 6th Avenue and 53rd street, in NYC. I worked close by and recall going to them and buying the gyros freshly made and wrapped and then handed to me as if it was a beautiful and edible present. Fast forward and now they are slowly taking over the world! Seriously,  The Halal Guys is now a global enterprise, with 94 locations and over 400+ new restaurants in development worldwide. They now have a shop in the Lawrenceville area of NJ. Yay!! I ordered the combo which consisted of chicken that was freshly cooked and hot off the grill and beef gyro. I was hoping for the lamb but on the day I came in, they did not have it yet. Their special white sauce is dairy-free and very reminiscent of mayonnaise. I felt it was just too mayo tasting for my taste.  Their hot sauce was really good but spicy. Between the beef gyro and the chicken, personally, I preferred the taste of the beef gyro over the chicken but that's a personal preference. I felt the beef gyro had more flavor and was not dry. The chicken was a tad dry for me. I  also had wished for more salad and less rice but again, that is another personal choice. I wish The Halal Guys the very best and they will make a fine addition to the Lawrence Township eateries. Super clean and super new looking. Went during lunch and was busy but didn't have to wait a long line. Went right up and ordered. It is like chipotle style where you go down the line and put your bowl together. I got the chicken platter which comes with seasoned chicken, tomatoes, lettuce, rice and white sauce. I had them add a bit of the spicy sauce. It was just enough to give it a little kick. There are two sizes for the platter, small and regular. I got the small, which was plenty. I had to get a to go lid because I couldn't finish it. I was worried having it as leftovers with the lettuce, but it was just as good the next day (I didn't warm it up because of the lettuce) but the lettuce was still crisp and everything still tasted great. read more

They really pack in the authentic flavor and load up the platters and/or sandwiches with tons of veggies and sauce. Smooth and light hummus, soft pita, zesty white sauce, and hot sauce (suggest the slightest drizzle). They also offer freshly made lemonade with exotic flavors such as mint or passionfruit. I've had Halal Guys in numerous cities when I first discovered them on the streets of NYC. You can always count on them to be within certain expectations since they follow a particular formula. This is more of about passing along information rather than an actual review. Today, I went in & discovered a new "limited" item on the menu: Spicy Slow Braised Lamb - yes please ! It was listed under the protein options with no pricing. In hindsight, I should've asked...wrongfully assuming it was the same price as the other meat at $12.49 for a Regular serving. Needless to say, when I got to the register, it was much more than I had expected, so I quietly bit the bullet. The Spicy Slow Braised Lamb was $16.99. Personally, it was a bit more than I expected, so I wanted to pass along this information to any folks (like me) who may not ask or wrongfully assume it is the same price as the other protein options since there is no price displayed. The $4.50 increase (or 33% increase) was a bit more than I anticipated. read more

WOW! love this place. I have heard so many good things about them and when I found out they were coming to Princeton, NJ I was stoked. They did not disappoint and I have to agree with everyone before me that raved about this place, they were right. I had a chicken and beef combo platter and you can't forget the extra white sauce, I repeat extra white sauce, so yummy. Located right next to Chipotle in the Mercer Mall conveniently right off of Rt. 1 and across from Joe Canals. I got in pre-opening so I didn't have a line. They seem very well organized and because of the fluidity in the serving line it should be a quick turnaround in patrons. You can also order on-line and pick up which is always another option. They're definitely more polite than the guys next door--though one prefers the burritos because these remind one of the fun parts of Texas, I prefer good manners and good enough, spicy food over healthier-for-you foods from next door, near the Nordstrom plaza area. Why? Because as someone who has witnessed firsthand the best of human nature and the worst of human nature, eating in a polite, kind atmosphere does not interfere with the digestion process. The Halal Guys do have a tradition of treating all their customers with dignity and respect, no matter our skin tones, weight levels, social status that keeps changing in the USI.S, or other aspects of any paying, comfortable customer. The orange biryani style rice with the halal gyro meat or chicken with yogurt /raita are tangy, tasty, tantalizing on the tongue with a bit of zest here and there. And their customers rarely throw Nazi napkins or triangular Klan symbols that police officers know well about by criminals.....food and hospitality, as our traditions know, go together. My friend and I went to this place. It was my first time there and I'd go back. There was a decent amount of seating inside and apparently when the weather is warmer, you can sit outside on a patio. The food was pretty easy to order from. You could choose meat, veggies and all the fixings you wanted. Welcome to another example of the "Chipotlization" of the fast casual food scene, this time with a Middle Eastern flavor. If assembly line semi-authentic ethnic dishes are your desire, The Halal Guys will scratch your itch. They were great as a push cart delight on the streets of Manhattan, where pitas stuffed with grilled lamb, beef and/or chicken, white sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion provided a unique taste sensation and welcome competition to the ancient hot dog vendor dominance. This was an improvement in cuisine on a large scale, and these Guys and their ilk were a welcome addition to the street food universe. As the old proverb goes, "Anything worth doing is worth overdoing." So, why not put the concept on steroids and put the pushcart into bricks &mortar, and turn it into a fixed dining establishment? Well, for me at least, it is a case of, "More is less." Yes. It is still delicious. But, the idea is too limited. The menu consists of three primary items: grilled beef, grilled chicken and falafel (What?! No Lamb!). Your choice is restricted to whether you want it only in a pita, or in a bowl with red rice and small salad added. You do the permutations. They are very limited. Of course there are a bunch of tables if you chose to dine in, but when I was there for lunch recently, it was almost all takeout. Bagging it at least somewhat replicates the city street scene original. There is just not enough there to justify turning a wonderful urban moment into a suburban sit down experience. And, it changes a fun cult event into a dull knock off. Yes. Chipotle gets away with it, because their offerings are broader and more diverse within the Tex-Mex realm, but if it only offered three types of tacos/bowls all the time, customer would soon tire of the monotony. Too, Chipotle was the first mover, so they get momentum and some credit for that. So, do the unexpected, Halal Guys. Set up a large push cart in front of your shop with only a few tables, and shut the restaurant except for storage. Better yet, turn the indoor space into a coffee lounge for people who want to caffeinate after they chow down on one of your hoagie/taco/pita things. Be more than a copycat. read more

My first Gyro Sandwich is with the Halal Guys from one of their food carts on the streets of NYC. It was mind blowing since I've never experienced gyro meat having grown up in the suburbs of Central NJ. The Halal Guys are in NJ....Central NJ?!?! I'm there!! Gone is the greasy food cart and now, numerous brick-n-mortar stores can be found throughout the US. Inside this store, located in the REI shopping center on Rt. 1 in Lawrenceville, the decor is minimalistic with sit down tables, countertops and their appropriate seating options. The walls are decorated with murals of the Halal Guys humble beginnings in NYC. Up front is an open kitchen, hot tables and food servers. Place an order and your meal is assembled with fresh rice or greens, proteins and toppings. Choose a platter for a plate of food or a sandwich for a wrap. Both are huge and are definitely shareable. Sides of hummus, baba ghanoush, tahini, fries and falafel are available for purchase, as well. I visited during the soft opening. Unfortunately during that time,the gyro meat was not available so a Combo Platter was ordered. The beef and chicken in the Combo Platter were lightly seasoned and cooked to perfection. Definitely add lots of red or white sauce to boost the seasoning/flavor level. I don't recall from my food cart days of having to do this. I'm glad they finally opened up a location in Lawrenceville so I no longer have to drive to either their New Brunswick or East Brunswick location. Exactly like the cart in New York City. Excellent food and great service in my experience. Both the pitas and the platters are excellent and portions are great. Falafel platter with extra salad is delicious. Be sure to ask for extra white and red sauce. Note that when they put red sauce, they ask how many lines you want, I guess because it's pretty strong for most people. Does Halal Guys ever disappoint? I've had them since my clubbing days in NYC, then while getting my Masters in Philly, and now they are close to home here in the 'burbs. I'm so glad that they are an establishment that makes sure to keep the quality and flavor of their food consistent no matter where you get some chicken and rice. I came in for a combo platter (was so sad they don't offer lamb), and the beef and chicken were both so flavorful. They gentlemen behind the counter were all very helpful and attentive to get us in and out quickly, which I appreciated. We got our food to go and it was amazing! The rice was soft and fresh, crispy lettuce and lots of white sauce! We added a side of hummus to round the meal off and it was perfection. We both got regular platters and they were pretty large, we have leftover for the next day. If you have not had a chance to visit a Halal Guys yet, I highly recommend you get to this one and test them out. It will be worth the drive. The serving size was plentiful and everything was deliciously seasoned. Gotta get that white sauce -- I'll have extra, please!! Be careful if you're not too keen on super spicy things, the hot sauce is HOT. Wash it down with one of their refreshing craft beverages, I recommend the tropical lemonade! The restaurant has plenty of clean tables to eat at. Service was provided with a smile by the friendly staff. Pretty much a grab and go Gyro joint when the other fast feeders in the area are boring you to tears. On the two occasions I darkened their door business was relatively light so the transactions were reasonably quick. The Chicken Gyro was fresh and better than average given their "street meat" heritage. This section of Route 1 by the 295 interchange is a franchise ghetto so do yourself a favor and bypass the usual suspects for a nice change of pace. Four stars for The Halal Guys. read more

We're already fans of Halal Guys and this location was really good. We both had the beef gyro platter and it was delicious. I also had their falafel and it was crispy on the outside and flavorful. It was a tad dry for my taste but their white and hot sauce combo was helpful with that. I also want to highlight that the staff was very friendly and kind. I initially wanted to try the savory herb beef but since it was going to take 10-15 minutes so I went with my usual beef gyro. Then when we sat to eat our nosh, the staff came out with a generous sampler of the savory beef! How nice! It was a special gesture and a nice added touch. We live about 40 minutes away from the nearest Halal Guys location and this kind gesture definitely made it worth the hike. We will return! read more
