It was the very first thing Jamie W. and I ate when we landed in Honolulu. We checked into the Prince Waikiki and walked over to Ala Moana. It had been decades since I was last here, so when we entered the Lanai food court, i thought we landed in a food paradise since every kiosk served variations of all our favorite Asian foods, even Spam musubi.and kimchee rice balls. However, we couldn't avert our gaze from this shop which focused primarily on Japanese sandoitchi. You may not know the Japanese make the most awesome sandwiches with, of course, the crust immaculately cut off. There are all the predictable ones like egg salad and ham & cheese and even a California sando, a sammie version of a California roll. It was quite a treat with the soft white bread from the Hokkaido-based Brug Bakery providing the casing. This is my first time in Hawaii, and I heard a lot of talk about this sandwich shop at Alamoana. When I went to check it out, I saw that they're selling salad. And hey i'm no stickler for healthy food, but I didn't know I came to Hawaii to see another 7-11 shop at the mall. The salads they're selling is Cesar, Chinese chicken salad and beets. I tried the Chinese Chicken and hey what else can i say... it taste like salad.. nothing special about it, oh and BTW the salad costed $8.50 so keep that in mind when you plan to visit. I went to try out their sandwiches and one of the employees working there said that they don't make their sandwiches in the back anymore. It's not fresh at all, they said they get it from a kitchen in Kakaako. I came to get fresh authentic japanese sandwiches but I come to the realization that they don't make them anymore. I dont know if they changed the recipe or the ingredients have been downgraded but the bread they use tasted spoiled. I tried the Roast beef sandwich and the strawberry sandwich with creme and I have to say, it wasn't the best sandwich in Hawaii. I first went to Mana during their soft launch when it was sandwiches only. Since then they've added ice cream and new sandwich flavors. The miso katsu ($6)is a one slice sandwhich rather than a two piece like most others. The miso sauce has a strong ish alcohol/mirin flavor, but I prefer that to the typical ketchupy katsu sauce other places use. The take out katsu sandwiches from Rokkaku are probably the best in the mall, but these are a good alternative if you don't want to walk over to that part of the mall just to take out. The soft serve parfait (5.50) is on the tart side because of the strawberry, but is very creamy and smooth. I was tempted by the bright new storefront in the Lanai at Ala Moana offering cute Japanese-style sandos. But after trying Mana Sandwiches I decided I'd rather get my sando fix elsewhere. If you come early, there's a wide selection of savory and sweet sandos available. The dessert sandwiches come in halves, while most of the savory ones include two halves. I was mostly interested in the sweet ones, and at $5-6 per half, it's hard to justify the price. Each strawberry sando has those 3 strawberries visible at the front, but to my dismay there wasn't any more behind them, leaving me with just cream towards the end. I know their bread is specially made by Brug, but it honestly just tasted like bread and the slices were a bit thin. The best one for me was the matcha azuki strawberry, which was tasty and was the most complex out of all the fruit sandos. The matcha cream had a nice bitterness to it and the strawberries were very sweet as well. The mentaiko potato was alright but nothing special. I've actually been really into the strawberry sandos from Don Quijote, so I guess I'll stick to those for now. I will keep an eye on this place for any developments. read more

During my trip to Japan in 2018, I often went to the convenience stores for tamago sando (egg salad sandwiches). There's something magical about the combination of premium eggs, Japanese mayonnaise and crustless white bread. Recently I had an appointment with my optometrist, where her office is on the makai side of Ala Moana Center. I had to use the restroom, so I made my way to The Lanai and passed by Mana Sandwiches (MS), a subsidiary of Brug Bakery Hawaii. I stood in front of their stall in awe - - my eyes landed on the fruit and egg sandos. I was in a rush for my appointment, so I moved on. A week later, I had a follow-up appointment and this time I arrived earlier to further investigate. It was several days after their grand opening and had already seen multiple posts on social media. It was about noon and was anticipating a line but to my surprise, there was none. I looked at their display section as there wasn't much to choose from. Primarily they had some fruit sandos on hand. I wanted to get a sando for lunch, so I asked the associate for savory options. I was advised they were making some and would be putting them out once done. I grabbed an empty seat nearby and in about 5 minutes I saw staff starting to restock the display case, so I made my way back to the counter. A foodie friend had earlier in the day posted mentaiko potato but didn't see any, so I inquired with the associate. Luckily, they were making some at that moment, so I asked for 3 of them and picked up other savory items and some sweet sandos. The next thing I know, I counted 10 sandos on my tray and I sure wasn't willing to carry all of them with 2 hands, so I purchased a bag for $0.20. I grabbed an empty seat and was so excited to try the mentaiko potato sando. The bread was pillow soft and I really enjoyed the spicy fermented fish roe and mashed potato mixture. This was a real winner in my books. I looked at the time and it was just a few minutes before my appointment, so I grabbed my bounty and headed to my optometrist's office. After my appointment, I stopped by my sister's home and gave her the remaining 9 sandos to enjoy. The kids really liked fruit sando with Oreo cookies - they commented the cookie bits were still crunchy. They also raved over the egg and roast beef sandos. Overall, a great first experience with MS and see me going back again. It's the same cost as a full sandwich, but it's definitely worth it. I also had the egg sando and it was just ok. I wouldn't write home about it. Interesting concept in sandwiches Mana Sandwiches open recently in the Lanai Food Court second level, Diamond Head side of the Ala Moana Shopping Cntr. Seeing a televison segment and reading the many Yelp reviews decided to try it. We shared three different sandwiches. First one we ate was the Avocado and Crab. Of the three it was my favorite. Filled with a good portion of avocado and a sprinkle of crab. Next up was the Local Egg Sandwich. Not sure why the call it local. Is it local sourced eggs and not eggs from Japan? Amply filled with deviled egg , I would have liked it better with more mayo and salt. The third was the Strawberry with nutella cream. Not being a nutella fan this sandwich would appeal to those who love nutella. This Japan sandwich concept is interesting. I will be back to try the other offerings. It's summer time! Usually during summer I enjoy going out to the beach, having a picnic, etc. I heard about Mana Sandwiches opening and got super excited hearing it was a Japanese sando store! I grabbed several flavors ranging from sweet to savory. Of course I wanted to try them all but I had to control myself. The size is perfect for a grab and go snack to enjoy especially if you're doing some shopping in the mall. I believe the bread is Brug so hence why the subtle sweetness and soft pillow like texture of the bun. Price wise is around $4-$6 give or take. Most of the savory sandos come with two halves while the sweet ones come with one. I know - "but the price!" But if I really think about it, the quality and ingredients really make this something worth a try because it's in a convenient location and you know you're getting the best! I really enjoyed the Kinpira and the mixed fruits sando (if I had to pick just two). I also enjoyed the fresh strawberry milk which had fresh strawberries and a creamy taste because of the milk :) My mom who also came with me enjoy the Kinpira and the chicken avocado one as well (this was was pretty filling hehe) They are a SMALL LOCAL business that during these difficult times (blame inflation lol) are doing their best to serve you delicious authentic Japanese sandos. I discovered this new Japanese style sando shop on IG . It was recently opened at the Ala Moana Center. It is located on the 2nd floor in the Lanai food court by Sharetea and Macys. The store set up is beautiful and bright. It makes you want to try them all. The sando selection is huge and it's so hard to choose without going overboard. Their most popular sando are tonkatsu, sukiyaki, and california. We end up buying tonkatsu, sukiyaki, strawberry, and nutella banana cream. Some of the selections come in either 1 piece or 2 pcs in 1 packaging. 2 pcs are perfect if you want to share. The jap style bread texture is sooooooo soft, just the way I like it. Keep in mind, the tonkatsu does not have that fresh crunchy texture because it's been slightly refrigerated. The flavor is still pretty good but I still prefer the fresh tonkatsu. Strawberry is a must get because it is so fresh and sweet. Of course I love anything nutella, and the nutella cream is not overpowering. My friend also ordered the strawberry milk and she loved it but it was quite expensive around $8. I would def come back to try other sandwiches if I'm in the area. . read more

My friends and I went to Mana Sandwiches for their grand opening. They were offering a free cooler bag with a $15+ purchase, so why not? Haha. We went on a Saturday during lunch time and surprisingly, there was no line. The Lanai food court area was packed. People were standing around with food in their hands waiting for tables to open up. I noticed a long line of stickers on the ground for mana because I guess they had anticipated more customers and wanted to encourage social distancing. The sandwiches are all around $6-$7, although some sandwiches are half sandwiches and some are full. For example $7 will get you a full egg salad sandwich, but $7 will also only get you half a tonkatsu sandwich. They have a nice long display case so you can see what you're getting. I chose the tonkatsu, the mixed fruit and opted for the $2 chicken broth add on and a parfait. All together, it came out to $20. It was a little pricey, but everything seems to be crazy expensive nowadays, so I guess this is the new normal. How'd they taste? It was good, but I don't think it was anything crazy exceptional. The bread is soft and the fruit sandwiches are pretty. I go to a place in kaimuki that's similar and more convenient for me (I think also less expensive), so I'm not sure when I'll be back to Mana. read more

With it's soft opening on June 1st this beautifully fresh simplistic look is a refreshing welcome into summer with what I thought was a sandwich shop....it is but a Fruit Sando!!! The Japanese Fruit Sando is a beautiful work of art involving everything from fruits, Azuki, and even savory items like veggies and fish just something you'd never think of putting between two slices of bread, and not any bread but bread made from BRUG Bakery since they do own and operate this biz as well it's just a match made in heaven! They just opened June 1st so this soft opening is operating on a limited menu though looking a the beautiful rainbow selections of sandwiches are just breathtaking though as I came at the end of the second day many popular ones have sold but with many still available I was thrilled to have gotten to try one of them woohoo!! Matcha Anko Tangerine, Macha Anko, Mango, Pineapple, Mixed Fruits, Carrot & Cucumber, Sweet Chili Fish Fry, Kuromame Mascarpone, Honeydew Melon and what I chose Kiwi. This green jewel of a sandwich was filled with fresh Kiwi and Premium Heavy Cream on MANA bread. All half sandwiches are wrapped and boxed with care so it's easily a great grab and go item. Making it home safely it was the highlight of my night as I enjoyed each bite filled with Kiwi and heavy cream (wished it was a bit more sweeter for me) the bread is crust less, not too thick but was a little denser than I'm used to but definitely is a light yet lucious treat. This is a new Japanese style sandwich shop in the Lanai food court next to Macy's in Ala Moana. It took the place of Ike's sandwiches. The visual spectacle is truly something. Nicely cut sandwiches all in a row with varying colors and going from savory to sweet and then moving on to more desserts and drinks. The white counters and bright fruit colors are very eye catching. Be careful though because some of the sandwiches are only half sandwiches and for that the price it's a bit much. I tried the fish sandwich, egg sandwich and the strawberry, banana and oreo. The fish sandwich was pretty tasty but again only half a sandwich. The egg sandwich is a full sandwich but was very buttery tasting. 6/29/22 Walked by the other day and saw Mana...decided to come back today to try the Mixed Fruit Sando. Located in the Lanai eatery area vs the food court downstairs at the Ala Moana Center. I love Japanese bread - they are fluffy and soft. Add in whipped cream and some local fruit, how can you go wrong? The sando comes crustless. One bite in, notice the fruit is left in chunks (tangerine/strawberry) while the pineapple and kiwi was sliced. My lil man consumed it! $5.75 for half a fruit sando. After tax and tip $7 for this sando. $6.75 for the Strawberry Milk after tax tip also over $7 Eeeeek! Did my lil human enjoy it? Yep. Was there any evidence left? Nope. Worth it? Their beautiful set up caught my eye and I had to try one :) I liked how they had so many different flavors, but I decided to try the mixed fruit (orange, strawberry, kiwi, and pineapple with whipped cream) so I could compare it to other "fruit sandos" I had on island and in Japan. Price was $6.. but when they rung it up, I realized it was only half the sandwich! Um.. wow that's expensive... $6 should have been for a full sandwich. Anyways, I dug in as soon as I got to the car and was immediately disappointed. The bread wasn't as soft and fluffy as I hoped and actually tasted a little stale. I've been missing Japan like crazy, and although there are so many bento, tonkatsu, ramen, izakaya and sushi spots, I always had trouble finding a good Japanese sando that stacked up to the ones I've had in Japan. They did a beautiful job with the design - the white, red and teal colors definitely stand out among all the other shops. The workers are so helpful and patient - there are so many choices so it can get a little overwhelming if you're indecisive like me. My friends and I got a few to share, and we loved all of them. The whipped cream for the sweet sandwiches is perfect - not too sweet or bland, and it adds a nice creaminess to any of the fruit sandwiches. The bread is so so so so so so soft, and all of the flavors that we got matched perfectly. The Kinpira, Tonkatsu Sando, Strawberry Matcha Anko and Mixed Fruits were my favorites. I was actually on Instagram when I came across this place. I was looking at places to eat at and things to do in Oahu. And you know that algorithm. This placed popped up and I thought it was the cutest thing! Who doesn't love sandwiches? Especially when they are Japanese styled sandwiches. It was even easier for me since it was easily accessible. I was at the Ala Moana hotel and the Ala Moana Mall is connected! They are located in the food court. The array of colors definitely drew my eyes over and the assortment keep me busy! They have savory sandwiches to sweet fruit sandwiches. I couldn't decide so I got both! I got the tuna salad one, and the strawberry and Nutella one. Everything was already premade and sitting in the fridge display. I really wanted to get the chicken one but I didn't want to eat it cold. The tuna salad in my opinion was a bit dry. Other then that, it was quite good. I couldn't tell if it was a bit dry since it was pre packed? The bread made up for it. It's soft and the best part, crustless. I saved my sweet one for a little later. After a quick stroll around the mall, I pulled out my strawberry Nutella and it was just like dessert! Juicy strawberries, like whip cream (wasn't too sweet) and a nice touch or Nutella. That, paired with the soft bread was a perfect combo! I wish I was able to try more flavor but I was full by then. i give the tuna salad three stars and the strawberry Nutella 4 stars. I've had better Japanese sandwiches here in California. I heard that this place is pretty new, so I understand if they haven't found what works best for them yet. I'm hoping to return to Oahu next year and can't wait to give them another try. I know they'll do better with time and I can't wait to see what else they'll bring to the table! Location: Located inside of the Ala Moana mall in the Lanai food court. Food: Local Egg Sando Strawberry Sando Tonkatsu Sando All of the sandos can be shared between 2 people. If you're eating this as a meal, sharing might not be optimal. The Local Egg Sando was creamy from the kewpie mayo and every bite wasn't overwhelming. The milk bread was fluffy and light. The Strawberry Sando was refreshing with the strawberries and whipped cream. It wasn't sweet at all and nice way to enjoy a fruity dessert. The Tonkatsu Sando wasn't the greatest. It was a bit dry, not crunchy, or juicy. Would skip on this next time. Overall, if I'm shopping at Ala Moana and happened to be craving sandos, would stop by to grab the Local Egg and Strawberry sandos (perhaps try the others). read more

This cute "sandwichery" was hard to pass up and not get anything! I got the Egg Salad and the Strawberry Cream and my son got the roast beef with the fried onion. My favorite was the Strawberry, the whip cream inside was so creamy and sweet! These little sandwiches remind me of having tea time with the girls. I would love to try more but I got full with the egg salad. Highly recommended! read more

Located in one of the indoor food court spots at Ala Moana- I like the fairly easy location for free parking and the clean bathrooms! I have to be honest, they got me with the gorgeous display of colorful fruit sandwiches but it just wasn't as flavorful as I thought it would be. Although super pleasing to the eyes, I question if the $6 strawberry sandwich was worth it lol. The next time I return, I definitely want to try some of the other sandwich varieties, as prices on some others were not as high. read more
