Nanding's Bakery in Kapahulu has been around for a long time. The OG location is in Kalihi. On the corner of Campbell Avenue and Martha Street near Zippy's and across from Guava Smoked. Prices are lower than most bakeries; they also offer a discounted day-old section, for an even better bargain. Nanding's are known for their Spanish Rolls, a butter lovers dream. I picked up an Ube Ensymada and Adobo Roll. The former was alright, not as fluffy as I was expecting. The ube filling was alright. Latter had a decent portion of pork adobo in the middle...actually, more off-center, which is my aesthetic and mindset anyway. Adobo could have used more vinegar. Pricing and service is excellent. They are open 600a till 500p daily. I went in at 700a, and they were sold out of some pastries already. Parking...maybe on Martha,'or one of the other side streets. There is the Zippy's lot...but one should also patronize that establishment is you park in their stalls.

Look at da size of dat Ensaymada!

Still a great neighborhood bakery to consider. They specialize in Filipino style sweet and savory delights. Their spanish rolls are #1 and so buttery. Love their ham/cheese rolls and pandesal too. In fact, everything is worth trying. Nanding's bakery usually is fairly busy, especially in the morning when workers are buying goodies for the office or clients. Located in Kapahulu near Zippys and Rainbow Drive Inn. Limited parking, but street parking is usually available.

Nanding's is a local Filipino Bakery founded in 2001 by Fernando Paez, who grew up baking while living in the Philippines. After he had moved to Honolulu to reunite with his family in 1996, he baked bread at his home to sell to Filipino hotel workers at local bus stops. However, the State Dept. of Health told him that he needed a legal business to do so. In compliance, he used his nickname, Nanding, and opened up Nanding's Bakery in Kalihi in 2001. He expanded the bakery to two more locations, Waipahu in 2007 and Kapahulu in 2015. All 3 locations are staffed by the Paez family members that include 3rd generation family members. This review is for Nanding's Bakery at the Kapahulu location. As with the other two locations, Nanding's Bakery Kapahulu is known for its signature Spanish rolls that are tubular, fluffy, buttery and rich in flavor. The Kapahulu locations bakes more than 2,400 Spanish rolls and 500 other bakery items per day. Other popular items include pandesal, pork adobo rolls, ube-filled puff pastries, custard/pumpkin pies, rice desserts, ensaymadas, fudge brownies, bread loaves, cookies, scones, empanadas, and more. They also sell Filipino snacks, sauces, and small can goods. Prices are very reasonable for these baked items as compared to other local bakeries. My favorites are: * Spanish rolls. They're so soft, rolled with rich butter with a slight salty taste. Smaller than a hot dog bun, they're best when eaten just out of oven. * Ensaymadas. They're soft, sweet spiralized pastries that are topped with whipped butter and sugar. So rich and flavorful! * Ube cream cheese pandesals. These purple, slightly sweet yeast-raised rolls are pillowy soft and filled with light-tasting melted cream cheese. So delicious! Customer service is provided by Paez family members who are very friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable about the many pastries that they offer. Their part-time worker who works on weekends, Cassandra Morete attends high school at Sacred Hearts Academy, and her parents manage the Kapahulu Bakery. She states she is giving back to her family to help them succeed so that her siblings have a more secure future, as well as carrying out her family's legacy of baking. The bakery interior is clean, bright, and spacious. It has a number of almost-new looking display cases and racks that showcase the baked goods. All items are grab-n-go. Be careful of the step-up at the entrance; otherwise, you may trip and fall. Located next to Zippy's Kapahulu in the former Domino's Pizza location and across the street from Side Street Inn, Nanding's has free parking in its small parking lot of 4 spaces on the side of the building. Note that once you're parked, you must reverse out of the space. Street parking is also available. Hours of operation are: Tues to Sun 6a to 5p and Mon 6a to 1p. With its extensive variety of fresh pastries at affordable prices, we'll certainly be back to try different items! We hope the Paez family can continue its legacy with future generations! Support local!

The west side of Honolulu is lucky to have Filipino restaurants and bakeries easily available. For the east side of Honolulu, not so lucky. But at least there is Nanding's Bakery to get your Spanish Rolls and Pandesal fix. This place is located in Kapahulu, along Campbell Ave., next to Zippy's. There is free parking along the side, entering from Martha St. Really easy in and out. Inside is your typical small bakery with everything all on display. You choose what you want, get it boxed up, and out the door you go. It's hard to call it real Filipino bakery just cause it just sells the basics: Pandesal, Spanish Rolls, Ensaymada, and incorporates Ube. There's a lot more than that! I think it's more of a mix with local baked goods. Perhaps it's more tourist friendly being close to Waikiki? Nice, friendly staff. Be sure to let them know how many items you're planning to get so they may grab the appropriate box. I tried a number of items. It was hit and miss. The best one was the Macadamia Nut Cookie. Nice balance of sweetness and butteriness, and excellent nutty and toasty flavor from the macadamia nuts. The Honey Oatmeal Cookie, on the other hand, was not bad. Nothing special. Not too sweet. Your usual dry, oatmeal cookie. Weird everything is called a roll--even the ones that are buns. For the buns: corned beef was ok. It tasted like they just scooped it out of the can and stuck into the bun. Adobo was good. Nice portion, tasty filling that was more on the savory side for adobo. Tuna was ok. The bun was dry. Filling was bland. Onto the real rolls: ham and cheese was good. Bread was good. Nice amount of ham and cheese. Arabiki was ok. It was just the sausage and bread. Bacon was very good! It's bacon! Ube Spanish Roll was ok. Nothing special. Very light Ube cream inside. Regular Spanish rolls were nothing special. Feel like it's just the same everywhere. Butter rolls were really good! Bread was soft and buttery without feeling heavy. Dare I say better than Liliha Bakery? Lastly, the Ube Pandesal was good. Soft, slight sweet and buttery without feeling heavy good Ube flavor. Overall, a decent bakery that has a good (and usual) variety of items and the only one that offer a decent amount of Filipino baked items. I like how everything isn't overly sweet or heavy and you can taste the main ingredient. The cookies were good. The rolls/buns were hit or miss. At least now I know which ones!

Tiny little hole in the wall with a nondescript signage but wow...the baked goods are super yummy! The bakery is bustling and the servers are helpful. I think they said they have been around for over forty years. Many of the staff appear to be relatives of the bakery owners which probably helps with quality control. Probably the best known items are the ensymadas..surgery, buttery, light, airy and super soft as it melts into your mouth. We ordered a four pack. Since we were there we ordered the ube rolls, pecan bar, chocolate cookies as well just to try. Everything was good! The pecan bar was nutty with caramel like binding on a buttery cookie like crust. The chocolate cookie was huge and keep in mind there are nuts in the cookie. Delicious with each bite! The magic word is butter!

This place always serves some of the freshest bakery items. The Spanish rolls are so buttery with a hint of sweetness. There spam roll, Portuguese sausage, and adobo rolls always hit. Parking isn't amazing but workable. The service is always top notch. Very friendly and patient, and the inside clean and nice.

I personally really love yhe Spanish rolls from this place. They also make other desserts like brownies and cookies, but the Spanish rolls are the best. Service is fast but not friendly. That's fine. Inside could use a face-lift, but it is clean in an old workout sort of way.

Spanish rolls from Nanding's is always winnah. This was the first time I went to the Kapahulu location. I was the only customer at 8am. I ordered dozen Spanish rolls. Guy working the front was super nice and told me it would be ready in 5 mins. Store was clean and had a good selection of baked goods.

Nanding's

Nanding's Bakery is located in the Kapahulu area and offers a broad range of baked goods. I tried the Spanish roll ($0.80 each) and it was quite tasty! Only complaint is that the roll I sampled was a bit hollow inside, and wet? I believe the moisture comes from butter. I was hoping for a fuller bite, but it was delicious nonetheless. The cashier who was working the counter today was patient and friendly. I was impressed with how quick she was! There seem to be parking spots to the side of the bakery, sandwiched between Nanding's and the Snoopy Store. The ambiance of the bakery isn't lavish or luxurious, as it's a modest grab-and-go kind of place. Overall, I had a positive experience and would visit again!

WHEN: Sat @6am Been up since 4am due to jet lag so my friend and I figured we'd walk there--actually we ended up driving there. They have thier own lot to park in for free. This small Filipino bakeshop has a large variety of pastries and we ordered a bit of everything. They have savories, sweets, and even cookies! Also, prices are decent! Pastries here range $2.39-$3.19 Cookies range $3.49-$3.69 Spanish Rolls are $0.80 each or $8 for a dozen. I"m glad we are able to come early cuz I can imagine a lot of these pastries being sold out quick! Yummy!!!

The pastries are always good but the customer service though is so-so. Been going here since they opened this location. Continously coming here since it was closer to our grandfather's house but we usually go to the original one in kalihi. This morning at 609am, we decided to go to this location, on martha street. But before we headed that way, we called to ask if they had anymore butter rolls because they always sell out before we get any (lol), the girl lady who answered was so punchy, as if she didn't want to work or just asking before going there was a problem. Within the phone call, could hear the displeasure in her voice that it set us off a bit. Came in the morning(624am)& told her I was there to pick up the butter rolls[also got 2 custard rolls), gave me the roll of the eyes. How rude & unwelcoming. It's no wonder family members & neighbors say go here after a certain time, otherwise better off go to the kalihi one since they're nicer, welcoming & know them better. Received our butter rolls & 2 custard rolls. Niece wasnt pleased of how the custard roll looking like someone squeezed the puffiness to it. One was puffed up while the other looked like it was intentionally squeezed, we even took a vid in the parking lot before we left the location lol. You can kinda see it in the pic of how it looks like too. Still taste good though lol. Overall, pastries good but knocked 2 stars down due to lack of customer service on the phone & in person. Lack of presentation of the pastries. That girl lady needs to choose whether she wants to wake up to work with a positive attitude & tone OR wake up to get another job with her already bad tone & attitude. She was giving Nandings a bad rep, knowing this family business has strived for years & an absolute milestone for the filipino community.

While everyone is preoccupied with getting Leonard's down the street, Nanding's is sort of the best kept secret for being just as good of an office pleaser when you roll in to your office with a box of fresh, hot Spanish rolls. A quaint Filipino bakery that has a ton of baked goods choices, my favorites being the pan de sal and the ensaymadas, but of course nothing can beat the fresh Spanish rolls. The staff is always friendly, parking is a little strange (you kind of have to ramp up onto the sidewalk) but there's also plenty of street parking around so it shouldn't be an issue. Check this place out!

Come get your fresh Spanish rolls, Spanish rolls with ube, and ube cheese pandesal at Nanding's Bakery.

Have you tried Nanding's Spanish Rolls?!? The rolls are so delicious specially when it's warm! Come get yours at Nanding's Bakery. They have three convenient locations on Oahu -- Kapahulu, Kalihi and Waipahu. They are open from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm. You can pay in cash or if you use your debit/credit card, you must make a minimum purchase of $10. They have 5 stalls behind the store. I was assisted by the staff, Jasper, and he was friendly and I could tell he smiled despite the face mask on. It was around 8:45 am when I walked in and it was nice and quiet. The store is clean, just need a little reorganizing to make the space seem bigger ;) I got my ube cheese pandesal, Spanish rolls and Spanish rolls with ube. The ube cheese pandesal is one of my favorite! I love cheese and ube and it's combined in this pastry!!! *purple hearts*. The Spanish rolls is another delicious pastry that is enjoyed by me and many others that I know. Any of these pastries are good to bring when visiting families and friends or to bring to potlucks or to gift any of your favorite workers! The store also sells ready to drink cold drinks and instant coffee, condiments such as vinegar, soy sauce, fish sauce, and even sardines and liver paste (some know it as pâté that is used on a warm bread or for ban mi sandwiches. As always, thank you for reading my review. Have a great Wednesday!

Every morning, without fail, people gathered outside waiting patiently for pastries. No flashy signs. No gimmicks. Just quiet consistency. That alone intrigued me. By the second day, my mind was made up. I'm an early riser, so the plan was simple: go on my usual morning run and arrive before the rush. Japanese culture and craftsmanship have long fascinated me. Through close friends with family roots tracing back to Japan, I've developed a deep appreciation for the culture -- the discipline, the rituals, the precision, and the respect for process. There's a beauty in the intentional pace at which things are done. Nothing rushed. Nothing careless. This bakery embodied that philosophy perfectly. The space itself was small, modest, and aromatic. No overdesigned interiors. No influencer bait. Just the comforting smell of fresh bread and butter hanging in the air. Some bakeries hide behind elaborate architecture and presentation, but this place understood something more important: when the product is exceptional, the product becomes the attraction. The pastries ranged from playful and charming to elegant and refined. The Salt & Butter bread was an instant staple -- savory, warm, and impossibly light. The dough practically dissolved like air. Thankfully, nothing felt overly heavy, because I completely lost control of my ordering strategy. The Kobo Kuma -- a soft bear-shaped bun filled with homemade vanilla bean custard -- was perfection. Equal parts cute and comforting. The Cinnamon Roll was solid, but the Haupia pastry completely stole the show. For those unfamiliar, Haupia is a traditional Hawaiian coconut pudding found throughout Polynesia. The flavor here was subtle yet lingering, delicate without disappearing. The kind of flavor that quietly stays with you long after the last bite. Then came the Blueberry Danish -- beautiful, buttery, and perfectly sweet. I didn't even make it to the savory options this time, which honestly just gives me another reason to return. And I absolutely will -- whether back here in Hawaii or perhaps at one of their mainland locations in Los Angeles. Some places become popular because of hype. Others because of quality. This bakery earned its line.

That wasn't necessarily a bad thing since we had dinner ahead of us. However, we let temptation get the best of us and shared a $5.50 slice of the Ube Haupia Mac Nut Bar, a yummy combination of sweet potato and ube topped with haupia (coconut milk pudding) on a macadamia nut crust (Photo 9). Truth be told, it stole the show from the malasadas. FOOD - 4 stars... the malasadas were good, but that ube dessert was next level AMBIANCE - 4 stars...really a takeout operation with a lot of temptations SERVICE - 4 stars...very calm and orderly TOTAL - 4 stars...yet another spot for sweet Hawaiian decadence RELATED - Exploring Hawaii?
