Just got off the plane, found this Chinese restaurant on the main road leading to our hotel. So hungry...forgot to take pics. Ordered Fish filet with vegetables, Mandarin beef and Honey walnut shrimps. Each entree comes with complimentary rice. Everything tasted good, typical American style as was stated on menu, we devoured it all. I expected smaller portions since prices are all under$20. Walnut shrimp is the best of the 3. Staff is friendly and efficient, comfortable seating, clean tables and floors. Will visit again.

Mandarin King Chinese Food is for when you havr a craving Chinese food in Laguna Beach. Located on N Pacific Coast Hwy, I find the parking kind of hard. I guess I'm unimaginitive when it comes to chinese food. I just wanted some beef chow mein. A little greasy. I enjoyed the noodles. I greatly enjoy the small serving of rice they included. Atmosphere: 3 stars. Crowded. So is, in and out hamburger, most good places are. The ambiance is cozy and small. Service: 4 stars. They are busy and the wait is long. If you are looking for fast food it's not here. Recommend calling ahead if you want to save 20 or 30 minutes. Value: 5 stars. I paid $15 for the chow main. For the quality I felt I got my money's worth considering it is Laguna Beach. Quality: 3 Stars. I got my money's worth for the quality and quantity of food. The service was friendly, though it did take a little longer for the food to arrive during peak hours. This slight delay is the only one reason I'm not giving a full five stars. The other is the box leaked. Fortunately they put it in a bag. Overall, Mandarin King is the best value for local Chinese food.

2 stars for Mongolian tofu .. rest all good was bland. The sauces felt like all used the same flavors. The fried rice was very oily.

Met some friends for dinner at Peony on a Saturday evening before we went to a movie at the Rivian theater which is 2 doors down on pch. Our server was cookie, and he was fantastic. Attentive, cheerful, and pleasantly talkative. Offering menu and drink suggestions without being pushy or high pressure. We settled on 3 main dishes and rice. Everything was tasty. I think that the mushu pork was my favorite. My buddy's wife treated me so I can't speak to the prices but everything that I saw on the menu seemed to be reasonable. I'm looking forward to coming back and bringing my girlfriend to try Peony for herself. Also highly recommend Peony if you're going to an event at the Rivian theater. Parking in downtown Laguna beach is always going to be challenging. Unfortunately peony doesn't have its' own lot that I could see so street parking or parking off site and riding the trolley is going to be the best options.

All of the food came out extremely fast. I would highly recommend Peony Chinese kitchen to anyone.

As a former wok chef, I'm not easily impressed, but their food hit me right away. The Kung Pao chicken tasted exactly like the nostalgic flavor I grew up with -- it reminded me of my uncle's cooking. Perfect heat, proper wok aroma, balanced sauce... this is how Kung Pao is supposed to taste. I've been searching for this style for years. I'll absolutely be back. Places like this are rare.

Upon entry we were told to sit where we liked. Our server took our drink order. Our order was taken soon after. Our server was helpful but a bit abrupt. The restaurant was very clean. The dining area in the front was rather smallish. A fountain with an elephant figure on top was the focal point of the dining area. An odd display of hot mustards for sale greeted us as we came into the main dining area. There was more seating in the back but this was cluttered with paper goods and such. Our food came out relatively quick. We ordered two lunch specials. The first was house chow mein with rice, an egg roll and egg drop soup. The second was almond chicken with rice, an egg roll and egg drop soup. We were given complimentary crispy wontons with spicy mustard and sweet and sour sauces as appetizers. The chow mein was okay. Nothing special. The egg rolls were good. The egg drop soup was good. I am not a fan of this type of soup but it tasted as it should. The cashew chicken was good and had a generous amount of cashews. I am not sure what type of rice this was but I would have preferred the run of the mill white rice. When our check came, it was accompanied by two pre-packed fortune cookies in a repurposed wild planet tin. Music was playing a little loudly. It was kind of soul/jazz. It was pleasant but did not fit the atmosphere of the restaurant. This an okay restaurant but I would not go off the beaten track to eat here.

I had the most amazing time at this restaurant! The restaurant was pretty packed but got seated immediately. I was craving dumplings and their dumplings were amazing and juicy but the stand out for me was the beef noodle soup! It had the best textured noodles that I've had for some time and really tender beef slices. It was perfect with the chili oil that they had on the table. I loved that they have frozen dumplings that you can take home and I will definitely plan for that next time.

They all start to taste the same. Quite disappointed at the dumpling wrapper / skin... which is as important as the filling. They over steamed / cooked the shumai, XLB, and wonton so the dumpling skins were too soft, almost mushy. Maybe some people prefer this texture? Smashed cucumber has large portion, flavor is quite light compared to Din Tai Fung and Paradise Dynasty versions. Din Tai Fung and Paradise Dynasty are more expensive, but their quality and flavor are better so I would still go there for my dimpling cravings. Staff is friendly. Maybe try other dishes besides dumplings...
