I have grown up on Mangialardo subs- my uncle was a police officer in the district and my mother worked on the Hill, so we frequented this place. My uncle has retired and lives in Florida now, but every time he visits, he makes it a priority to stop in NUMEROUS times. I cannot tell you just how special and how good everything is. The "G" Man on a hard roll with all of the toppings (hot AND sweet peppers) is killer. It's the best bread, meat, and cheese you'll ever have. Don't plan on sitting down here- it's a grab and go joint. Parking can be a bear, and you'll often times find people double parking just to run in and get their fix. The best damn italian cold cut I've ever had in my life! To be honest, I've been hesitant to write a review about this place. Not that my word is bible and everyone will flock after my post lol but after visiting, I realized the cat is already out the bag! It opens at 7:30 am just to allow for the demand. I thought they served breakfast sandwiches but no. Do what know and stick with it. All the local law enforcement, government workers and secret service agents all over the DMV flock to this deli. One of my clients bought me a sandwich during a showing. I don't usually eat, tomatoes, onions or anything other than turkey or chicken on a sandwich. Since i didn't have the opportunity or order the sandwich myself, i decided to give it a try as is. The moment I took my first bite, i felt like the scene from Ratatouille when he ate the cheese and strawberry at the same time. What a spark! It was like a new discovery. Pure bliss in a bite. If there was a king of Italian subs it would Mangialardo's G-Man. The taste is divine and the sandwich is stacked. 4 meats and 2 cheese, heck ya. This beast is a meal in itself. I prefer the hard roll on most days, but a softer roll is easier to eat for those not baptized on the hard roll. All for under 10 bucks, easily one of the best meal deals in DC. As much as it pains me to say it, Julie H. is right again. Sigh. She knows her food better than me. I admit defeat. But not without writing my own review of Mangialardo and Sons! We should start with the basis that Washington DC is undeservedly lambasted on a consistent basis for an apparent lack of classic Italian subs (or hoagies, if you prefer) within the city proper. I would argue we sport what one might refer to as our holy triumvirate: A Litteri's (see Lee Ann O's review), Taylor (see Justin S.'s review), and Mangialardo and Sons (see Julie H's review). If Mangialardo isn't #1 in the city, I have no idea what criteria one uses to judge their hoagie. Probably the first word that comes to my mind when thinking of a Mangialardo hoagie is the word "fresh". My order, the awe-inspiring G-man, consisted of a wide assortment of fresh Italian meats and cheeses dressed with oil & vinegar (you don't have to add these ingredients), Italian seasoning, hot peppers (you can get mild ones), lettuce, and tomato. The Italian seasoning is clearly homemade. The lettuce and tomato are nice, sturdy, and crisp. You realize the second you walk in that you have entered a special place based simply on the wonderful aroma inside. I'll parrot Julie concerning the actual hoagie. I've never had a better one in my life. If Brad L. insists on calling the Mangialardo and Sons a B+ hoagie (a strong compliment from a Yelper hailing from Philly), I would LOVE to try the places in Philadelphia where he has eaten. Not sure what to say. I work on the National Mall and usually once a week for the past 15 years someone runs there for lunch and to bring subs back to us. There is no seating so its grab and go. I can't help but compare this place to A. Litteri. - As opposed to A. Litteri where you can choose from a set sandwich or create your own mash-up of meats, cheeses, and other toppings, Mangialardo has a small menu. That isn't necessarily a bad thing though, since they know what they're doing with the options that are available. The highly touted G-man is where it's at, but the other sandwiches I've tried are also quite excellent. - Sandwiches are less salty than A. Litteri's sandwiches, although maybe that's a function of there being less meat. - Definitely go with the hot peppers. I have not found the hot pepper addition to be spicy at all - maybe more like zesty. They're quite good though and add to your sandwich. - I prefer the soft roll here as it does not have the structural integrity issues that the A. Litteri's soft roll can have. It maintains a good chew and doesn't dissolving into a big soggy mess. - The sandwich isn't quite as big or brick-like as the behemoth that is an A. Litteri's sandwich, particularly if you go with the soft roll. Half is still sufficient for lunch. - The people that own the place are pretty awesome. Very friendly. - Hours are similar to A. Litteri's, aka not the best if you don't work nearby. Worth the trip out. - With no tables, this may very well mean for the downtown DC lunch crowd (similar to going to A. Litteri): 15 minutes to walk from office to Metro and ride to Potomac Ave + 2 minute walk to Mangialardo + 5 minutes to get sandwich and pay + 2 minute walk to Metro + 15 minute Metro ride and walk back to work = 6 minutes to eat lunch, assuming 45 minute lunch. Or -4 minutes to eat lunch if you just miss the train. Sometimes you can't have it all. read more

I miss hoagies the way people from California miss tacos, the way people from Texas miss BBQ, the way every transplant misses the food they associate with home. If you've read enough Yelp reviews, especially in D.C., you've seen these reviewers: "This place makes okay [bagels/tacos/lutefisk], but it couldn't compete if it was in [New York/California/the Mariana Trench]." Yes, I'm mocking their misery and their occasionally unrealistic expectations fueled by fond childhood memories--even though sometimes they're right. D.C. has no good lutefisk at all. But back to hoagies. I'm happy to say that I don't have to put any qualifiers on Mangialardo's. It's not just "good for D.C.," it's good. My G-man hoagie was just as delicious as my nostalgia-addled brain remembers the hoagies of home (the Philadelphia suburbs). Sure, you can get a lot of perfectly good, and sometimes excellent, sandwiches in D.C., but an Italian hoagie on a proper roll with hot peppers, oil, and vinegar? That's harder to find. The somewhat inconvenient hours, MF 7:30-3, even remind me of my favorite hoagie shop back home. But I would not be deterred by logistics once I heard about these hoagies. It took some preplanning, but I rode my bike to work, so I could ride over here on my lunch break--on a hot and muggy day in August--to get a sandwich. And it was totally worth it. The only problem was after devouring the entire 8 inch hoagie in a shady park, I almost couldn't pedal back to work. I should have saved half you say? AMATEUR. A hoagie with oil and vinegar does not keep, you just have to toughen up and finish the whole thing in one sitting. And so I did. read more

This is my favorite Italian deli (DISCLAIMER: I haven't tried A. Litteris yet). Mangilardos is third-generation family owned. This place is old school, and they don't need to fix what ain't broke! I know hot subs always seem more premium, but trust me, you want a cold cut. Nobody makes a cold sandwich like an Italian deli. This joint also knows exactly how to portion and stack all of the ingredients. The different kinds of cured meat, the pickled veggies, the cheese - all perfectly layered to get a consistent, delicious bite from the first to last. I definitely recommend the g-man. The first time I ate it, I realized I didn't need to try anything else, it was exactly what I wanted. The fontina cheese is a nice a touch and gives it a unique flavor to your standard Italian. The cheese is creamy and more bitter rather than sharp any tangy like an Italian hard cheese. It's also holds up to the heat, salt and fat of the other ingredients. I feel mozzarella or provolone are too mild to stack up, the fontina on the other hand holds its own. Also, please, please get the soft roll! It keeps the whole sandwich tender and easy to eat. The hard roll starts to squish everything and then ingredients start to spill out. The local bakery they order rolls from makes great sandwich rolls. They hold up to all he ingredients but don't get in the way. Keep in mind this place has really limited hours and no seating. You have to order the sandwich in the morning and the. Let it sit and marinate in all of its flavorful oils and vinegars and bust that puppy out for lunch. It's also a salt bomb, so gave a beverage at the ready. The ingredients are top notch and the cheese is so sharp and dry it crumbles into little bits of amazingness. The issue with this place is the hours. It's only open Mon-Fri 7:30 am - 3 pm. While I am glad that they can have a successful business with only being open during those hours, I can't go unless I have a random day off. The first time I came here I wasn't too impressed. No tables? Only a few menu items? Cash only? On my second trip, however, I realized what makes this place great. As I waited in line listening to two garbage men fight about why the Redskins stink this year, it dawned on me that Mangialardo's is a dying breed. It's a remnant from decades ago, a place where class nor color matters, and anyone can come to get a cheap, tasty Italian sub. The bread is fresh and the meats are flavorful. The line moves quickly and the food comes out promptly. The guy at the counter is related to the guy who takes your order, who's the son of the owner, and so on and so forth. It's a real family place. I think the best way to experience this place is to get a few subs to go on a nice day and then go sit outside next door at Harris Teeter. They have about 200 nice tables with umbrellas that are always open, so you might as well take advantage of them. read more

This is the place to come when you are looking for a great sandwich, and looking to get full! Mangialardo & Sons offers giant subs, and they really pack all the ingredients in there to the brim. The G-Man seems to be their most popular sandwich, it is a giant sub stuffed with many meats and cheeses, and whatever else they put in there isn't important...it just tastes good. They are always busy but somehow you never have to wait very long. Do not get discouraged by a giant line when you first walk in. If the place is completely packed you most likely won't have to wait more than 15 minutes (depending on your order). They are priced well, meaning you never will need to go to Subway again. I was anxious to perform a comparison between this famous sub shop and my other consistent favorite, The Italian Store. My G Man came with all the cold cuts mentioned here: ham, bologna, pepperoni, salami, mortadella, turkey, and provolone cheese. I added the Italian seasoning, sweet peppers, a little shake of the oil & vinegar, and stand bys of lettuce and tomato. It is certainly cheaper than The Italian Store. A small there runs what a ginormous costs at Mangialardo's. For 6.00 you get a sandwich that serves as a meal at lunch and one a dinner. I'm glad I finally got to try this famous place, but my heart is still with The Italian Store when it comes to subs. If you're in the neighborhood for breakfast, they do serve up egg & cheese sandwiches on Kaiser rolls. You can add ham, bacon, turkey or sausage if you'd like. There are also omelets served up on sub rolls if you prefer that, instead. They have sausage & cheese, ham& cheese and pepperoni & cheese. Street parking is available. read more

I used to go to this place a lot about five years ago when I worked daily from my house on Capitol Hill but haven't been there really since. Today I had a rare chance to work from home, the weather outside is beautiful, I was hungry and "Mangialardo's" popped into my head. It didn't take me long to remember why I patronized this place so much years ago. Real working people getting real food in a no-fuss Italian family owned and operated shop. Like many of the other reviewers, I love their G-Man sub on soft roll (get hot peppers too). The only reason I don't give this place five stars ... which is probably nit-picky ... is because they don't let you pay while you wait for you sandwich to be made. When it's real crowded, you have plenty of opportunity to make use of the idle time to get that cashier step out of the way but for some odd reason they don't let you do it. That said, not being perfect is part of this place's appeal so I'll gladly live with it and find more opportunities to work from home so I can eat more Mangialardo's subs! read more

Order your subs at the counter, take your numbered ticket and wait inside socially distanced from others. A few minutes later when your number is called, pick up your sub and order any sides or drinks. They will get those immediately from the nearby fridge, add up your order and then you pay. I've been living on Pennsylvania Ave for about a year now and I'm kicking myself for not trying this place out sooner! I have been hearing rave reviews about this italian deli since arriving in DC. In fact, telling coworkers I live in Capital Hill has led to my first hearing about this place. They insisted I try it out, that they have "the best sandwiches", but I thought meh, there's so much food to try in DC why settle for a lousy deli cold cut? Oh, how wrong I was... this place isn't just any deli - it's an ITALIAN deli, which means they offer hard or soft rolls, oil and vinegar, sweet or hot peppers, along with all the regular toppings other sandwich shops carry. I ended up getting the basic cold cut sub, and if I'm remembering correctly that included ham, mortadella, salami and provolone. I got it on a hard roll with lettuce, mayo, vinegar, onions, and hot peppers. I scooted over to pick it up and a friendly man informed me my order was already ready even though I had arrived early! A phenomenally trad sandwich stand (I do mean stand = carryout only) in a nondescript spot on eastern Pennsylvania Ave. A true throwback to a better era with a focus on quality materials and principled sandwich construction. Primary focus is on the quality of the of the food rather than the music playing over the speakers, the way it should be. There need to be more places like this in the world. The friendliness of the shop's proprietor was exceeded only by the toothsomeness of his sandwich. A must go. Best hoagie I've had in DC, hands down. And I say hoagie because I'm from Philly, where I spent years eating the best hoagies around. Moved to DC 4 years ago, and haven't had a great hoagie since. My problem is now solved - I moved into the neighborhood a week ago and couldn't wait to try it. I ordered the Big G, which is essentially the quintessential italian sub. Couldn't wait to get home, because it smelled just right. Took a bite, and nodded in approval as I chewed and tasted the familiar flavors of a really good hoagie. I love how everyone here says the Big G hoagie is huge. It's normal-sized for Philly standards, but then again, we ARE the fattest city in the country, so don't take my word on this one. If I were being a critic, I'd say it's B+ by Philly standards, and an A+ by DC standards. It hit the spot, and it was more than passed my expectations.
