Never mind all the other reviews bashing this place because it's not as good as their nanay/tatay/tita/tito/ninong/ninang/lola/lolo... not everyone has access to a Filipino relative to cook for them. If you look at this place from a non-Filipino perspective, it's actually quite good, fast service, and the price is reasonable. Rant aside, are you a non-Filipino looking to experience Filipino comfort food? Or are you a Filipino looking for a quick bite without having to cook? Then come to Manila Sunset, where their merienda ("snacks") are tasty. It's located in a plaza behind iFly, so across the street from Seafood City. Parking is easy and the place itself is pretty small but cute - I like the decor of the metal roofs, which remind me of the housing. Seating is probably difficult when it gets crowded, but we came on a weekday afternoon so it wasn't too bad. It's casual and quick, as you order at the counter and they'll bring you your order. My family ordered the following to share: - Fresh Lumpiaa aka Lumpia Sariwa: This thing is huge! So the way to eat this is to basically destroy it and mix it with the sauce. Funny given I find it a pain to roll up when making it homemade. They make it difficult to mix since it's on a small plate. Otherwise it's a tasty dish that feels healthy to eat compared to most Filipino food. Lots of veggies, but not 100% vegetarian since there's a tiny bit of ground pork, which they could use more of. - Pancit Malabon: Supposedly this is Manila Sunset's specialty... it's a thick rice noodle dish with a shrimp sauce mixed with boiled egg, green onion, and some ground pork. Their palabok comes topped with shrimp. I can't describe the flavor, but it's usually savory. However, their malabon could use some fish sauce. It's alright, but it's better to have palabok (same sauce, thinner noodle) at Jolibee. - Tokwa't Baboy: Literally means tofu and pork... which is exactly what this dish is. However it gets mixed with a soy sauce vinegar sauce that makes it a tasty combination. Tofu and pork pieces were good, but I did notice they seem to use some fatty/cartilage pieces of pork. Worth trying if it's your first time having Filipino food. - Arroz Caldo w/ Goto: Very good chicken rice porridge soup... perfect for Seattle weather. It's got a nice salty taste that's addicting, and the consistency is just right. Not too thick, not too liquid-y. I recommend adding a tiny bit of fish sauce for extra flavor. However, I don't really eat goto (tripe)... so if it's your first time trying arroz caldo, I recommend not getting it w/ goto. My parents are fans, so I just ate around it. - Vegetable Lumpia: Decent, better than Grill City's for sure - I like the blend of bean sprouts, carrots, cabbage, etc. However, these are not vegetarian as they usually have ground pork! Comes with 2 and the idea is to dip them in vinegar for maximum flavor. Be careful, they come out HOT. - Bibingka: SO GOOD AND LEGIT. God damn, probably the best bibingka I've had in the Seattle area (sorry Valerio's) - bibingka is this rice cake that's somewhere between salty and sweet. Great texture, very fluffy. I like how they use coconut leaves, so the aroma really gets through. Great with the ground coconut they serve, which I suspect is fresh from the texture. I can't tell if they threw in cream cheese (which is very typical), but it was so good. For what we had, it was only $25 for all the food. I'll have to come back some day to try out their other items like dinuguan (pork blood stew) and their drinks like sago gulaman! Keep in mind, with Filipino cuisine comes Filipino customer service... as someone who's been burned too many times by this in the Philippines, try to keep your expectations low. In our case they forgot 2 of our items, and we had to call out the server and show them our receipt to prove we paid for them. Food is still good though and you could say it's the authentic Filipino experience haha. I'm with Mel N. on this one - the reason why Filipino food hasn't hit the main stream like Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese is that our culture has this weird crab mentality of putting down other Filipino restaurants. When Filipinos are rating places down like this... non-Filipinos aren't likely to visit and won't get exposed to what our cuisine has to offer. It's a shame because Pinoys have such a presence in the U.S., and we're not just about lumpia and pancit. So get off your high horse on home cooking - no duh Filipino home cooking is better. EVERY OTHER CUISINE IS LIKE THIS. Manila Sunset offers great Filipino comfort food at reasonable prices without the madness of Grill City, Jolibee, or Chow King next door. For Pinoys, the taste will be average compared to what we experience at home. My husband and I placed an order to go yesterday. We ordered a Korean BBQ beef plate, a BBQ pork plate, an extra pork skewer, 2 orders of lumpiang shanghai, and a sago't gulaman. I also tried to order a guinimis, but they were out. It was all packed and ready to go in 10 minutes! Each plate came with 2 scoops of rice, soup, and a small cup of cucumber dip. The extra skewer also came with a cup of dip. Each order of lumpia came with a cup of sweet chili sauce. We also got plastic utensils and napkins without even having to ask. It was so delicious that after we'd eaten, there was maybe a scoop of rice and one soup left. Every time we go to Seafood City, we see this little restaurant across the street and always comment on how we need to try this place. We finally stopped by here on a Saturday for lunch with the family and got the Pinoy Spaghetti, Lechon Kawali, Lumpia, & Tocino. I personally didn't like the spaghetti all that much, but our 7-year old loved it. He even proclaimed it was better than mom's so I have to give it some credence from a kid's point of view. The 3-year old really liked the tocino. It's something he's missed since coming to Seattle from the Philippines. Everyone really enjoyed the lumpia too. The real star of the show was the lechon kawali. The meat was really tender and had a great snap on the outside. It really did remind us of the places we went to in the Philippines. Not too shabby. I came here for lunch while in the area because Filipino food is my absolute favorite! Must be something in my genes... But when I learned there was a Manila Sunset location nearby, I just had to check it out. Though Manila Sunset is a national chain, this is the only Washington location and it was my first time here. I ordered the Pork Inihaw Plate and Chicken Sontaghon, which didn't take long to get, despite the eatery getting busy with the lunch hour crew. The Pork Inihaw Plate had some good pork belly slices, which were marinated in garlic and vinegar, which is essential in Filipino cooking! Flavor was on point, even though some of the pork belly pieces were more fatty than meaty. And I didn't realize you also get a side of sinigang soup that came with the plate. The soup was basically just the sour broth with very few tomato and spinach pieces and no meat. Meh, I didn't mind so much since it was unexpected to get a free soup with the plate. Plus, the sour broth for the sinigang was delicious. The Chicken Sontaghon is basically a Filipino chicken noodle soup. It wasn't a bad soup, but not something I'd order again for when I'm craving noodle soup, especially on a chilly day. The overall flavor was light, so I recommend putting a dash of one of the many vinegars that Manila Sunset has in shop. Rice noodles were perfectly cooked and liked that the chicken served with the soup was a chicken leg, since I'm a dark meat fan. Cabbage and egg were served room temperature, so it put a damper on the sontaghon. Either way, I'm just glad there is a Filipino spot in the area because it's hard to find some bomb Filipino food in the Seattle region. When I get back to my office, I see 3 kabobs of chicken, which looks good, taste was good too, but the chicken was a little red. They had the heat on too high when they BBQ the kabobs, because on the outside it look like it should be cooked all the way, but it wasn't. Pancit was this simple translucent noodles mixed with cut up hard boiled eggs and that was it. Didn't look like any pancit I've ever seen. The soup that comes with the meal had sliced tomatoes in it and that's it. I saw nothing else in it. And it was very salty. I've had Filipino food, good, Filipino food and this was nothing like it. I adore how quirky the inside of the restaurant is and I extremely love how they used those tags for jeepneys and buses instead of your regular number tag for your table. The menu is your typical tapsilugan places that you'll find in the Philippines. I had a pork tocino and it was very delicious. The serving isn't much but it is enough to make you feel full. Short staffed. Wait is insane. We waited 30 minutes to get seated and it took the server to take our order for another 20 minutes. I had to get the attention of a waiter to take our orders since I saw customers who were seated after us getting their orders taken. Otherwise we'd probably still be waiting. Getting our drinks took another 10 minutes and it's been half an hour since our orders have been taken and we're still waiting. This place needs new management ASAP. They have many available seats to begin with but rather than serving the available tables first, they go down the line on the list. Thank god we ordered appetizer or we'd really be starving. We were ready to walk out but thankfully the server brought out our appetizer (Shang-hai lumpia). It was cold though, you can tell it wasn't fresh. Must've been sitting out. We also ordered lechon kawali, fried chicken and Kare kare. They all came out not hot except the kare kare. The meat in the kare-kare was tough, you can tell that it wasn't cooked all the way. We also ordered steamed rice and she brought out garlic rice, we didn't even bother to return it because it might take another 10 minutes or more lol. We asked for boxes and the check. Boxes came out first, we had to wait another 15 minutes to get the check. The server was nice and apologetic about the wait. If they hired more servers and cooks it might survive. Call me a Filipino food snob, or perhaps just blame my upbringing surrounded by amazing cooks... Filipino food could be so much more than this place! I ventured off to Manila Sunset in the hopes of finding decent cuisine that would remind me of my grandmother's homecook meals. However, one of the main problems in having these high expectations is the recoil after knowing they weren't met. We ordered the Pinoy Spaghetti, Puto't Dinuguan, BBQ Pork and Halo Halo. Portions were pretty hefty, but the quality just wasn't there. The spaghetti lacked meat and cheese, the two parts that I usually look forward to the most when enjoying this dish! The Dinuguan was super watery and bland. It definitely lacked that vinegar-coagulated blood taste (if you know what I mean, lol). The Puto that it came with was just okay, but I mean how the heck could you butcher a steamed rice cake? The BBQ Pork was pretty standard, nothing too crazy to keep me coming back. What saved the meal was probably the Halo Halo, to which I had to scoop out a bunch of the crushed ice before enjoying since there was so much of it! I enjoyed most of the toppings and appreciated that there were popped rice oats that embellished the top! Made me a little nostalgic of my childhood. In conclusion, I will probably not return. Well, maybe I might. Heard the bibingka is dank af. I set the bar high for this place because of hearing such good things about it's other branches in SoCal, but whatevs. I'd rather spend my money at other Pinoy places like the Jollibee across the street or PhilHouse inside of Island Pacific Supermarket on MLK. Visited on Feb 1 around dinner time. I know they just opened but here is my impression so far. Better than Grill City and a little less than Fil Cuisine. Ambiance - Great Mural of Filipino artifacts. Loved the replica of homes in the provinces on the side. It is a small place. So when you get more popular it will be your issue. I have one criticism tho: When I visited, there was about 3 parties dinning/ordering. So fairly empty but the floors were kinda messy. Cleanliness of a food establishment is key...let's just say those things matter because if what I can plainly see is already dirty - I am wondering how clean is the kitchen. Service - Good service. had lots of questions about food portions and prizes. The gentleman helping us was great. Our food came quickly. We were told it would take 10 minutes. But let's just say it was only 3-5 minutes. I expect the efficiency would be strong during rush times as well. Food - Great portions. The dinuguan and puto (5.75) was very filling. I was saddened that my 1/4 puto was smaller than I thought but still filled me up but I could have bought more. The tocilog tasted great. My parents took me to this restaurant today because they heard about it from my uncle. Located right next to the mall in the building before Acme Bowl. We got great parking right out front but thought it was odd that the place wasn't open. On google it said the hours were operating between 10-8pm but we didn't know that on Sundays they open an hour later. There were already customers waiting in front. The inside is pretty small and is probably equivalent to that of a Subway and since we were one of the first customers for the day there were tables available. As we were eating, more people trickled in and it was clear that not everyone would have a place to sit. I'm talking family sized crowds were coming in and this place wouldn't be able to accommodate them. But the workers were very friendly and took the time to explain the different dishes on the menu as well as any question you may have. Price: DIRT CHEAP. For three people it was a little over $30 and we got a lot of food. Food: - Pancit Malabon (I didn't know that it was basically polabok which I love) was pretty tasty but fell onto the side of a bit dry. I wish there was more sauce. Noodles were fat which was what you'd expect and the serving size was enough to get you full but not too full. - Puto Bumbong was great! Dip it in the butter and sprinkle some coconut flakes and you're good to go. - Halo Halo was very bland. For me, what gives halo halo it's flavor is some type of ube element and that was completely absent from the dessert. - Babingka was ordered by my mom and she loved it a lot. Tokwa baboy was made with pig ears(yuck). I was expecting it to be like FilCuisine's. The sotanghon was not up to par either, it was made with bihon noodles. The chicken was cut up into large pieces and not even shredded. I don't think you could even call it sotanghon- very disappointed- will not return. read more
