My bf and I have been here twice because the food is unique and delicious. If you enjoy sweets, you've got to try the guava and cheese pastries. You'll be thanking me when you do. He will usually order the 'manjares eggs' with extra eggs and then I try to sneak and eat the yuca and mangu (mashed plantains...sooo good!). I've had the breakfast burritos (veggie) and love the fact that they come with rice and beans inside. My favorite part was the small side of salsa that comes with them - you can tell it is freshly made and it was spicy and so good it took me back to breakfasts in Cancun. It's a good place to sit and have coffee, and it looks like they have wine and dinners starting - they are converting from just breakfast/lunch to include happy hour and dinners. as a local who frequents Manjares for their very good cappuccinos on a regular basis, I am very disappointed at the terrible service and mediocre food we received yesterday. They should have had more staff in anticipation of Mother's Day. our waitress was lacking in professionalism and was a real space cadet. we waited for a long time for service, then for coffee and drinks, then to give our order and very long to receive our order.And it wasn't even that good. I had to flag waitress down for food update and for the basics, like water. During our time there, although she came into the dining room 4 times, she did not check to see how our food was, etc. And, after we dined, had to flag her down again to get the check. We were not happy and doubt we'll return. Manjares could be so much better. It would be worth it for them to hire professional wait staff. read more

Nice little cafe on a side street in New Haven. It is small and definitely not good for a big party like ours. We took over the two tables out in front. I had a grilled cheese with avocado, which was solid. I also tried the delicious fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil panini. The iced latte was good. Breakfast here is great. I'd recommend the signature breakfast! There's food here you just and get anywhere else. It's a good place to go after the farmers market or to get some work done. Obviously very fresh and just-cooked. They also do a tapas night which I haven't been to, but which looks terrific. read more

The food here is usually pretty good but the service is pretty much always terrible. The counter/waitstaff are either too busy chatting with each other to notice that you want to order/are still waiting on food you ordered 20, 30, 40 minutes ago or...they are too swamped with customers and not prepared to take orders efficiently. I've gotten coffee and/or lunch here several times and it is always a slog to get your food. The staff (the young women who work the counter) are usually unfriendly, unhelpful, and inattentive to the customers who are (over)paying for their food. The last straw for me was bringing a friend there, ordering food, waiting 30 minutes for our order with no progress or even check-in from the staff. After we inquired about our order it appeared on the servers counter to go out. We asked if that was our order after watching other customers get their food for 10 minutes. We were told it wasn't. We waited another 10, decided to forget it, get a refund and go elsewhere only to be told by the counter person that the order STILL sitting (and getting cold) on the server's bar was actually our order. We told them no thanks and left. This place would be outstanding if their service wasn't the absolute pits! Go to Lena's or Delaney's instead. read more

My husband and I are regulars at Manjares. We've tried everything on the breakfast menu but the oatmeal, and can recommend it all. The brioche French toast is a particular favourite, but the pancakes are also light, fluffy and delicious, and the breakfast burritos are incredibly tasty (though healthy; they have more beans and vegetables and fewer eggs than you might expect). All of the soups on their lunch menu are delicious, and the smoked salmon sandwich is the platonic ideal of smoked salmon sandwiches. One small caveat: food is made to order, and service is often quite slow. If you're in a rush, I recommend ordering one of their scrumptious pastries and a cup of coffee to go, rather than waiting for table service. read more

Huge disappointment! Checked the ratings prior to going, reality is that the food was expensive and mediocre at best. Omelete was $9.00 served with one Slice of toast and nothing else. No homefries or fruit. Was service good? No, asked for my check and they wouldn't stop counting their tips to bring me my check. People came in and they were ignored! The pastries are consistently very good, particularly if you get there early for a good selection. They have a cool row of seats facing out the window, with a view of the park across the street, and a nice selection of books to read while sipping your espresso. My wife and I paged the whole way through a book on Chinese antiquities while sharing sandwiches and pastries one snowy day, and it was a slice of happiness. There's also an art gallery right next door, and some interesting shops nearby. This is a terrific addition to Westville. When I want to bring a friend a little treat to say thank you for something, this is where I go to get it. read more

Manjares, it is an ok place. I guess I was more dissappointed when me and my husband found a hair in our dish. I did not say anything because I went with other people and did not want to ruin their night. The tapa seafood they served us was not that good and the smell was very strong which it is a sign right there that the fish is not fresh at all. The service is ok. The dishes are not spanish from Spain as she claims, the owner is from some place in the Caribbean and have a little or not knowledge of spanish dishes. There is a place in New Haven, Ct to go if you want to get real spanish food and the owner is originally from Galicia, Spain. He owns two restaurans and he really knows what he is doing. read more

If you're looking for a great brunch or lunch experience, look no further! I have been frequenting Manajares for a couple of months now and I have yet to be disappointed. I have been to all the brunch places in Westville and this is by far my favorite. I first started coming to get the pastries - their chocolate croissants are superb. I think what makes this place worth 5 stars is the flavor and the fresh quality of all of their food. The orange juice is fresh squeezed from RIPE oranges- the orange juice at Bella's Café is bitter ! In addition they bake their own breads! Their Challah French toast is exquisite and packed with flavor - Lena's Confection's Challah French toast was bland, thin, and left me hungry. The portions here are perfect! Not too much (Bella's) but not too little (Lena's). Not to mention the prices !! The prices are ideal especially for what you are getting. Dare I say one "$" sign is a more apt symbol for the prices here. I come here 2-4 times a week! In addition, the owners treat you as if you are family, and it really makes the difference. A friend and I were ignored while other customers were served at the counter. After I asked for a menu and placed an order at the counter the food took forever. And we were there at 2 pm so the place was not that busy. We were not offered refills on water. I went back to the counter to order coffee. She served it without offering sugar or cream. When I retrieved the sugar bowl there was an encrusted spoon in it. The sandwiches were merely adequate--no garnish or utensils. Manjares has now taken its place as my favorite coffee shop in New Haven. Most importantly, there coffee is great. I've enjoyed all the food I've had there, though sometimes on weekends they do run out of things. The pastries are delicious - try anything with guava! On weekend evening it suddenly turns into a cozy yet chic wine and tapas bar. The owners are very friendly, make you feel like a regular on your second time there - the atmosphere is very neighborhoody, I often see the same faces. Sundays when the farmer's market is set up across the street is very busy -- but still a pleasure as long as you aren't in a hurry. It's such a great addition to the Westville community - my only complaint is that they're not open on Mondays! read more

I highly recommend this cafe if you want to find a place to go "where everyone knows your name." I've read a lot of reviews on yelp critiquing the service, portions, prices etc. etc. but I haven't been anywhere in New Haven where I've been treated more like family. I can honestly say as a parent and as someone who lives in an apartment, I have grown to rely on this place. Yeah it took a few times to get familiar with how things work and yeah it works a little differently depending on who's there but I linger with my daughter and have never been anything but welcomed for it. I've watched people have business meetings there, have family parties there and as a mom with a small child this is one of the most family friendly places in town. The bathroom is big enough for a stroller (and I have a stupid big stroller) and no one bats an eye if you need to breastfeed. I enjoy the food, the pastries are always fresh, great smoothies, great coffee, lovely comfortable patio, cocktails! Real food, real drink, real people, real community. The folks who work here take pride in their place, their food, their style. They've made it what THEY want it to be, what they hope to offer New Haven. It might not be for everyone but then again if you try and work for everyone you end up Starbucks. read more
