Went with family of 16. They easily accommodated us. Competent service, food came out hot and fast, we never ran out of water, and the food was fresh, and delicious. I would definitely go back. The only dish that was a miss, was the korean seafood noodles. Soup was excellent, condiments were good, but the noodles was out of the box italian fettuccine noodles, so it seems, but i would order that again. The food quality used to be so much better. Now I'm getting finely chopped meat under a bed of raw onions. I only get 5 shrimp in my fried rice now and for the price to continue to go up. I think this may be my last order. The containers aren't even filled like they used to be. It's very disappointing because I used to love it so much. read more

Been coming to mapo every now and then for the past few years, a pretty decent place for more authentic Chinese dishes. At least it's as authentic as a restraunt in the suburbs can go. I think overall their food is pretty good, most choices on the menu are enjoyable. I particularly like the two color tofu and the dry chili chicken (la zi ji). Sorry I'm not too sure on the English names, translating from Chinese. The food can get greasy but I think good Chinese needs had a good dense rich flavor to it. The service is friendly, the price a little high i think but not a crazy amount. If you're in the area definitely give them a try! read more

It's been a few years since I've written my review of Mapo. To date it's still a classic staple that has been around for decades. The food and service at least for me has never changed and if anything - has not gotten better. I do believe they use some MSG in their doses but not all. Food comes out promptly and service is always tentative. At times this place can be quite packed particularly around dinner hours. I rarely come get for lunch so I don't have much room to comment. Pricing is beyond fair and parking is adequate. Come here to try some authentic Taiwanese food! read more

Some like it HOT. (Me, not so much) But, if you do, you will LOVE some of their spicy selections. (My husband swears by the dried chili chicken). They don't hold back! However, if you have a more sensitive palate you can find many milder selections too. Everything is very flavorful. If you prefer Chinese food that is not americanized, you will enjoy what Mapo has to offer. You may have driven past it two hundred times without noticing it there because it is tucked in the corner of a tiny (slightly shady) strip mall. Today me and a few family members stopped by to have lunch here at Mapo. We were kindly greeted, and seated with waters with ice already ready for us after sitting down. I ordered the orange chicken, which did not disappoint what so ever! It was absolutely mouth watering. I was really glad to read another recent review that said they suspected a new cook in the kitchen because when we ordered our 3 favorite dishes here, we were greeted with 3 totally different looking and tasting items. Sure, it's a hole in the wall with a weird unkempt fishtank and gruff staff, but that could all be excused by the quality and tastiness of the food. We CRAVED it. We took people here all the time: friends, family, coworkers... But now, the food is a mere shade of what it once was. The once crispy scallion pancakes are dusty and flat, my spicy beef noodle soup is bland and the beef is 97% fat with little to no meat on it, and my husband's chicken curry had undercooked veggies and a totally different tasting sauce. We asked our waiter if there was a new cook and he asked us how we knew. We gestured to the scallion pancakes and he nodded and said they're different now. The one good thing this will do for us is force us to look for new Asian restaurants in the area, and there are plenty. Just North of the intersection of Ogden Avenue and Naperville road in Naperville sits a small shopping center. When driving by one night I noticed Mapo Restaurant and decided to give it a try with no idea of what they served beforehand. I came in, was greeted, seated and looked over the menu and was pleased to discover they are a fairly traditional Chinese restaurant. As I looked over the menu I settled on two of my favorite Chinese dishes, Crab Rangoon as an appetizer, and General Tso's chicken as the entree. I then sat and admired the atmosphere, the place is very clean with lots of employees visible at all times, for such a small place it almost seemed a bit overstaffed. It's also a little on the dark side inside with very minimal lighting. I find that to be plesant but that might not be everyone's cup of tea. Within a few minutes the crab rangoon was brought out to me, and it was pretty good. It was well breaded and had a nice cheese to meat balance. I've definitely had better crab rangoon before, but this was well above average. Then came the General Tso's chicken, on the plus side this chicken tasted excellent with a nice more sweet than hot sauce mixed in with vegetables. On the down side I had more than a few pieces of chicken that were tougher than I would expected as though they were dried out or overcooked. Overall I was pleased with my visit to Mapo Restaurant, my food was good, the service was excellent. It was a little pricier than some other, admittedly not as well decorated Chinese restaurants that have equal or better food. Based on that I'm going to award it three stars. It's worth visiting if you're in the area and willing to spend a little more for the sake of ambiance. read more

I went to Mapo this past Wednesday based on Yelp reviews, thank you fellow Yelpers for introducing me to such delicious food! Mapo looks like a small place from the outside and you can easily pass it if you blink. Once inside, the restaurant is bigger than it looks from the outside. When I went with my friend at 6 on a Wednesday, there were only a couple of other tables. I'm surprised it wasn't more busy! Our waitress was very nice & attentive throughout our entire meal. We started with the Mapo's Favorite Pork Belly which was a bit scary when I saw the price of $17. I had seen the pictures on Yelp though and we both knew it was something we wanted to try. It was so friggin good. Perfectly cooked and in a sea of soup & juices, it was absolutely delicious! Plus it was HUGE way too much for the two of us to eat which explains the high price. Yum, yum and more yum. It did have quite a bit of fat on it though which some may find off putting. For our second dish we had the Sesame Tofu. I love me some tofu and I had never seen sesame tofu like this in my life! It was just like the same sauce you'd get with sesame chicken except with a tofu substitute which makes you feel like you're being much more healthy. The sauce & flavoring in the sesame sauce was spot on and the tofu was cooked with just the right mix of soft & firmness. All in all, the meal was fantastic from beginning to end. We also got hot tea which is always a good bonus on a cold winter night. I'm craving that sesame tofu right now as I type this...so you best believe I'll be back! read more

Ate here with a group of vegans, and we had plenty of vegetarian choices to pick from. The vegetable tofu soup and the spring rolls are vegetarian. The other veggie options are spread out amongst the Cold Dishes, Vegetable, Tofu, and Noodle sections. They have some interesting-sounding non-veg selections, such as frog, or tofu with pork blood. Veg items included the Vegetable Delight, which I found more interestingly spiced than at many places; General Tso's Tofu (have not seen this elsewhere), and the Basil Tofu, which is just as good as everyone else said. They even have a potato dish, which is essentially fried potato shreds with a couple of scallions sprinkled over them. Tasty, but would be disappointing if your only entree. They're not the most flexible; I asked if I could get the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce and make it Eggplant and Green Beans in Garlic Sauce ("No," said our waitress), but they were willing to add vegetables to my tofu for a $1 upcharge. Since most of the tofu dishes are basically tofu in sauce, you may want to consider this. The Basil Tofu is spicy, with hits of garlic, and the Vegetarian Chicken goes one better than some other Chinese places and stuffs the tofu skin with mushrooms. Nice. Vegetables were not overcooked; food took a while but was certainly worth it. And they handled 12 people with separate checks very well. read more

Come for the dan dan noodles, stay for everything else. Of the half-dozen or so items off the menu we tried, the properly ma la spicy Szechuan-style dish stood out as the best. Flavourful, hearty, and packing a punch, it had my nose sweating and my lips tingling. Order a bowl to share between two to four people - everyone will want a taste, but you'll want to save room for other goodies. While there isn't much in the way of proper green veggies on the menu, the string beans don't disappoint. Crispy, yet tender, this is a consistency you can only get with the exceptionally high heat of legit industrial stoves. The fried spicy garlic tofu is also a treat... as long as you don't chomp down on one of those brilliant viridian decorative peppers by accident. And for the fatties out there like me, you'll want to pre-diet in order to feel ever-so-slightly less guilty about chowing down on the Mao's pork belly. Ours was savoury and meltingly tender - the skin, fat, and meat - every single bite. Simply superb. If only the service matched the cuisine. Admittedly, it was busy... even at around 1400 hours on a weekend afternoon. Still, it got to the point where my mom had to go up to the cashier in order to put in our order. Same story with getting doggie bags to take home leftovers, and for finally obtaining the bill. It seemed as though a server would come by two or three minutes -after- we'd finally decided no one was going to show up. Self-service or no, the food is pretty much beyond reproach. Especially if you're into your capsaicin-heavy culinary treats, you'll want to make a stop at Mapo early and often. read more

Had a large groups of people in front of the door when we came in so we didn't know if they were waiting to be seated or not, but since no on said anything we assumed that they were just there waiting for their food. After an hour of waiting we finally get asked about our food. The food here is excellent, service is pretty good, but the restroom is gross and the place could use a little updating overall. In my opinion, Mapo serves up some of the best Chinese you can get outside of the Chicago city limits. We've tried their Mongolian chicken, Mongolian Beef, Kung Pao chicken, Sesame Chicken, chicken fried rice, and a few other dishes. All of these dishes were really good. However, on one occasion I has to use their restroom and it wasn't a nice experience. It was dirty including lots of "fluid" on the floor and it was falling apart. Chinese food seemed like a good option on a snowy day, so off we went to our go-to spot for consistently good Chinese food. Really like that it's BYOB which makes it a inexpensive dinner option too. (They will bring glasses and an opener upon request). Food was delicious as always but service was a bit slow, probably because there were many large groups there on a Saturday night. Yay! Chinese delivery that is really tasty! This place has my husband's favorite dish, the dry chili chicken. I got the Kung pao chicken and it was great, a little oily with the hot pepper oil, but still very tasty. Also got the egg drop and hot n sour soups, a true litmus test for quality and they also had good flavor. My hot and sour didn't have pork in it, which typically they do, but I really liked it still. I didn't love the egg rolls but my husband did (plus I'm normally super picky about them - there's a certain spice that I don't like in them, it's in Chinese 5 spice too, maybe anise?). Anyways, definitely give it a go. Next time I'll probably order the namesake, mapo tofu. read more

Service is good, and the place is quiet and clean.furthermore, dishes are plenty and it's quite a lot for three to order three dishes! Recommendation, Mapo Dofu with fish, it's recommended by the boss, little bit spicy but local! Mao's pork belly is also my favorite! The pork is tender and smelly! Yummy! We came by for dinner and had their signature Peking duck, seafood tofu casserole, Mongolian beef, and shrimp with Chinese broccoli. The duck has to be ordered about 3 hours ahead of time. All were fresh and good. I particularly enjoyed the spicy seafood tofu casserole. The duck was also very good, but was only served as duck drumsticks and flour wraps only (slight disappointment in that there was no duck soup nor duck/veggie stir-fry serving, as we've seen ala Cantonese style). Finally, finally! We found a really good Chinese place to eat at. My husband and I are from calif. We moved to downtown Chicago in Jan of 2011 and then to Naperville in March of this year. We have been to Chinatown in Chicago and a few places in our neighborhood, with no luck. I saw mapo on yelp and we decided to have another go. We started out with Sichuan wonton, loved the sauce although I prefer it to be more spicier. We ordered spareribs, Mao's favorite pork belly, and pork fried rice. The spareribs came off the bone, the pork belly melted in your mouth and I couldn't stop eating the rice. Can't wait to go back. We are done searching. read more

Went here with cousins from out of town. Normally I would not venture way out in the middle of nowhere to get Chinese food. But I would go back, if I had 50 minutes each way to drive to nowheresville. If you live way out here, I would recommend this restaurant. This is family style with a lazy Susan in the middle of the table and we ended up with a million entrees. 3 kinds Of Mushrooms was good although bland. The wife found that it was good mixed with tofu. Shrimp with basil was also good. There were two soups, sizzling rice/chicken soup and tofu soup. The chicken soup was good, but the tofu soup tasted like nothing. The egg rolls were the frozen Sysco variety and unimpressive. There should be higher quality rolls or remove then from the menu. One obviously fresh item was the green beans. They were well cooked and seasoned. The Mongolian beef was good. We also had balls of fried chicken but I don't know what to call them. They were good. Oh man, beef noodle soup. It was amazing! My friend's gf is Taiwanese and she said they have a lot of Taiwanese food here. I didn't know the difference until today but it was delicious. The special beef roll appetizer also out of this world. I've had mapo tofu before and I wasn't too impressed with this one-but then again I never had a seafood/fish version of it before. I'm a meat and potatoes guy when it comes to my mapo tofu so next time it'll be beef or pork, it was okay I just didn't like how the fish and shrimp mixed with the dish. My wife and I have been looking for a great Chinese place near us and I must say this place will definitely be our new "spot." My parents are having 2 Chinese international students staying with them and they suggested this restaurant to us, saying it was "real Chinese food." With that being said we quickly decided to check it out. When we walked in, I noticed that there were many Chinese families dining there (which is a great sign). It was quite busy, but we were sat promptly. We enjoyed the complimentary jasmine tea, and had a chance to absorb the ambiance. Simply decorated, yet cozy- woven together delicately with some mild Chinese instrumentals. The menu is extensive and provides pictures of highlighted items. I ordered the broiled beef in hot Sichuan sauce (picture was provided), when it came out (came out fast) it was identical to the picture in the menu. The beef was succulent and flavorful- rich in garlic, and red pepper- the green onions and cabbage really enhanced the flavor sensation- beautiful dish! I was astounded with how tender the beef was, the quality of the meat was very good and you could tell. We also ordered the American favorite- Crispy chicken in tangy sweet sauce. I will say the dish was tasty no doubt, but it was a tad too crispy, needed more actual chicken than the fried batter. This minor set back definitely did not over shadow our great experience and our desire to come back. I plan on digging into their seafood portion of the menu next time we go. Best Chinese place in Chicagoland that I've been to- But beware, the bill will climb very fast if you order a lot (tad expensive), the portions are very generous so keep that in mind. The beef in the soup was stewed wonderfully! Falls right apart! Big portions to share with friends and family. Lazy Susan? What an invention! The other special dish that they execute very well is the dry crispy chicken with red peppers. Not spicy and just delicious. Truly authentic Szechuan cuisine! I use to frequent this place when I was attending BU. I still try to come here, but since I live so close to Chinatown, it isn't a priority to come here. This place is pretty good for the most part. It is definitely comparable to the Lao's chain in Chinatown, but I like this place slightly more. What we always order... Mapo Beef Rolls - They are wrapped in foil, but they are just okay for the most part. Sometimes the wrap is really crunchy and you can't really taste the beef. I would still recommend this because all the other times they were pretty good. Dry Chili Chicken - Breaded chicken cooked with tons of red peppers. This dish is my favorite thing here and it always deliver! It is not too spicy like other places and the breading is mostly perfect. The last time I was here, the breading was a little too crunchy. Mongolian Beef - They are not shady with the amount of beef they give you. The beef is also nice and tender. Not chewy like other places. Mapo Tofu - This dish is extremely spicy for me, but I absolutely love it. Seared Fish Fillet - This fish fillet is cooked with garlic sauce and it is not drenched in sauce like most places. Definitely a must try if you are looking for a fish fillet entree. Overall, I don't think anything you get here can be too bad. Everything we tried was pretty good. read more
