I really am excited to leave this review tonight. We've been going to Mar-Cosina in Westlake for about 8 years. The ambiance is always very pleant. Never too loud. The tables are always clean and the staff is very attentive. There's never been a bad dinner. First off, they are one of the very few restaurants that serve Cabrito (goat). It's scrumptious! Well isn't this just a hidden gem? This restaurant is a bit off the beaten path but WORTH IT. Great atmosphere, clean and the decor is welcoming. Silverware and dishes are spotless. Bardo was too notch, personable, friendly and attentive. His jovial demeanor made the experience even more pleasurable. I ordered steak and shrimp fajitas for dinner. We were served the tableside chips, a bean dip, and salsa. All of it was crisp, fresh and delicious. Two skinny margaritas (excellently made) in and out came the sizzling fajitas. DELICIOUS. It's rare I don't have to add salt or pepper to meats in fajitas and this was the one of few times. Steak was marinated and seasoned beautifully. The beans and rice were cooked to perfection and the tortillas were fresh and warm. For desert we ordered the churros which had a delicious filling and came with ice cream and whipped cream. This restaurant is extremely hidden and around 1:30pm on a Saturday we were the only customers. I immediately notice every table is set. So the items on the table have probably been out for a long period of time which bring "Dust" in play. This place had a lot of dust even on the booth seats I could see where the previous customers had sat. So if Dust is a problem your already set table are not "Fresh." As a suggestion keep the table cloth on the table but set the table "As Needed" basis. Now to the food. The food was probably closer to a 3.5-4.0 but the Dust was really getting to me. The food tasted overall pretty good and the kids ate just about everything on their plates. We all had the enchiladas and they were pretty good. Something to be concerned about. This company has a tremendous amount of options on their menu and if they don't get a large customer base coming in and out I would wonder how they will be able to keep the food fresh. The restaurant is a little off the beaten path, tucked into an office/retail park near the Marriott Hotel in Westlake. Excellent Tex-Mex food. The chips and salsa are made fresh. The menu is filled with Tex-Mex staples like tacos, enchiladas. I haven't tried the fajitas yet, but they look and smell great. Fresh lime margaritas hit the spot. White tablecloths and uniformed waitstaff add an unexpected touch. My only complaint after several visits is that the chip bowls are way too small (not much larger than the bowls containing the salsa and beans). We are always running out of chips. Frustrating and maddening when you're paying for queso, which sits there getting cold while you're waiting to catch the waiter's attention. The wait staff is friendly, flirtatious even, without being creepy old men. My first time there they noticed I disliked my drink, even as I was seated with a very large group, and asked what I didn't like about it and then made a recommendation that was dead on perfect! I have since brought different members of my family and they made a wonderful fuss over my mother and another time tried to convince my 3 young adult sons that I was a regular there, and maybe something of a man-killer! So...I'm travelling on business and staying at the Solana Marriott and thinking...ughhh...I really dont want to eat there again....not very good food...tolerable but certainly not any type of real culinary experience. Wow...came in here expecting ho hum. Left realizing I just found a true hidden gem. DO NOT let the location or facade fool you. This is the real stuff. Sure there's Tex Mex...but they sneak in traditional Mexican also. Ask for the chilli beef sauce on your beef enchilada...and the homemade hot sauce...its HOT and smoky and wonderful. Make sure you try the top shelf guac made at the table...and let them put in all the jalepenos...they are fresh and good and not overly hot. You can tell they grind their beef in house...the taste speaks for itself. Just like cheap red wine...cheap or chain Mexican restaurants leave you feeling uncomfortable after you're done. Not the case here...I was full, 0satisfied, and felt great. Even though I ate more than I should have :-). I'm gluten intolerant and had not one issue :-D. The margarita was good and was not served in some ridiculous cartoonish glass ;-). Oh...and do yourself a favor and ask for extra been dip...it is fabulous! Anthony was serving me and was an excellent host...so I took a pic with him and the owner, Marcos :-). What FUN...and such a wonderful experience. Dessert...do yourself a big favor and order the flan...home made...the real deal and DELICIOUS!!!!! Everything was very delicious here at Mar Cosina. We were a very large group and they were very accommodating. The chips were fresh and the salsa was the right amount of heat. We also ordered some guacamole, which was made fresh at the table. It was quite yummy but I felt it needed touch more salt. The biggest challenge was trying to decide what to order. Our table ordered a variety of skinny margaritas and different flavor and margaritas and all were very tasty. I got the shrimp with Ranchero sauce. It was yummy. I also had some tortilla soup which was chockfull of chicken. It could've been a meal on its own. Others had fajita bowls, and chimichanga and tacos. All were very happy with their meals. The service was excellent. Getting the 15% off high checking in for the first time on Yelp was a huge savings for our big group. So thank you Yelp! And thank you Mar Cosina. I noticed they had a HH special and I tend to satisfy my curiosity of a new place by starting with their HH if the drinks are satisfying and the bar food is good I will try the restaurant's full menu. This place had such mixed reviews but I experienced nothing less than perfect in all areas of food, drinks and service. First off I was happily greeted, I ordered a Paloma which knocked my socks off! I mean my Chankla off! So refreshing and with the 1800 silver, I was relaxed in no time. We have big dinner plans tonight so I went with the taco trio special. You can mix n match your meats and I did just that. 1 carnitas taco -yum, 1 brisket -yummy and one steak fajitas- yummiest. Super filling and topped with. Fresh cilantro and red onion. What really made these tacos heavenly was the salsa! HOT! But you can't stop putting it on everything! So good! The bartender waited on me as well as my server and both were friendly and attentive. Only found out about this place because I was leaving the new lifetime gym but otherwise would have never known there was ANYthing over here. Stopped in and the only 2 workers were super friendly and nice. A couple other people eating as well. Sunday around 2pm and it was pretty empty. Asked for the big fajita plate to share with my girlfriend and the server suggested adding the ribeye so we did. Mind you the fajita plate before the ribeye is $40. We eat and had a few diet cokes. Food is just okay. Shrimp was phenomenal but other than that it is standard tex mex. Well the bill comes out and it's $94. Remember we got a $40 fajita plate to share. So apparently, the ribeye was a $40+ addition. Our bad for not asking. And THEN I noticed the drinks are $3.75 A PIECE! EVEN REFILLS! so keep that in mind when you're a family of 4 that wants a couple refills. That's $30 on top of your food. To top it off I sent my card away with the server and that $94 total. Comes back. Check is now $98...this new printed out receipt says "credit card use" or something along those lines. So be aware of the FIRST tab is CASH ONLY price. If you pay with card they will charge you a certain % AND $3.75 EACH drink and refill. We more than likely will never go there again. read more
