The Mar-Val in Groveland is a crowded store with narrow aisles and few parking places. The prices are sky-high, Everything is about 50% higher than expensive San Luis Obispo on the coast. The website and the voicemail both have the wrong hours. It takes at least 10 minutes there and 10 minutes back from the other side of the lake so when someone calls and the VM on the store number says one thing and you get there and the store closed 20 minutes ago it is frustrating. When this happened to our guest staying at a rental they said there were 6 cars with people who received the wrong information and NO ONE was happy. I have called three times to politely let them know at least if the website is too complicated to change then change your store voice mail. Maybe choose your hours for the year and let them know when it will be closing early for the season and when it will go back to regular hours. Great store and even better people!! Just wish the management was more considerate with their customers time. read more

Perfect little grocery store if you're on the way to Yosemite or staying in one of the airbnb's at Pine Mountain Lake resort. I couldn't take off one star for space because it's just the way this grocery store was built. Small grocery store for a small town. When I say small, I mean that you can't really fit 2 carts side by side in one aisle. You have to let one person go by first, kinda like when you're on a one lane road and one person has to back up until there's space to let someone pass. Exactly how the aisles are here. Once you get adjusted, it works. At the entrance of the store, there is a table that's set up for disinfectant wipes for the grocery store carts + hand sanitizer. They took the time to take precautions for Covid and this was much appreciated especially since we were from out of town. Since there isn't much in this town in the way of restaurants, we planned on cooking most of our meals for the 2 separate weekends we stayed out here. While it's a small grocery store compared to ones we have here in the Bay Area, it didn't lack in the essentials that we needed- spices, olive oil, fresh fruits and vegetables, sausage and eggs for breakfast, apple pie + vanilla ice cream, 2 gallon jugs of filtered water, and our beloved snacks (salt and vinegar chips, cheetos). Most importantly, there is a bathroom here in the back and it is *clean*!! On almost all the times we came, I had to use the ladies room here. This little grocery store is great for picking up food on the way to Yosemite. There is a deli, refrigerated section, snacks, and drinks -- nothing gourmet, but they have the standard picnic items. It tends to get somewhat crowded in the evenings as many people are either picking up dinner or grabbing things for the next day, so the check-out lines can be long (1 star off). The staff is generally nice, although not always the most efficient. The customers tend to be overtly Republican, and very vocal about it. The go to store when you are around the neighborhood (Pine Mountain Lake resort) for the weekend. They have everything that you would need to make your trip worthwhile when it comes to things that you might have forgotten to pack, craving for something that you could not carry with you for a lunch or dinner to be cooked and on top of that an extremely friendly and caring staff that help you in every way possible. They have a variety of items which you would not really imagine to be the case with a small grocery store though they would surprise you with the options that they would carry. All in all an absolute recommendation in case you are around and need that quick run to the grocery store. The only things that could get better with the store would be the parking space and the closing time (even 10 PM prior to the daylight savings seems early for folks that are driving in late into the town). read more

Mar-Val has everything you want or need. It is a full sized supermarket. They have a great butcher shop and wonder deli.

Service was terrible. Deli looked sad and when I asked for help from checkout someone came complaining about there break, stood at deli for 15 min and not a single person ever interacted with me. Once we checked out with no deli products the cashier smirked and said violently have yourself a better day, and handed me my receipt aggressively. You need to train these folks this is not a good service whatsoever especially when the grocery is 50% higher than Sonora. As a customer for 15 years I'm done with your deli services. They have everything we needed for our weekend trip. For our day hike trail food: Pink Lady apple - was crispy, had a good balance of sweet/tart. Blue Diamond almonds - personal sized packaged which was perfect to snack on the trail Large selections of drinks, they even have Snapple in plastic bottles. For our dinner cooking: Covers Apple Cider - bottled in glass jar from local farm in Tuolumne. It was more tarty than I had expected but was still tasty and refreshing. 1,000 Stories Bourbon barrel aged Zinfandel - was surprisingly flavorful. What a great discovery. For a town with a population of about 600, this little supermarket packs a punch. It's obviously popular because the parking lot was packed, kind of like Trader Joe's packed. Good sign. The fresh flowers pics piqued my attention so when we made a decision to eat in it was a slam dunk we would drop in for some provisions. Plus, the proximity to our vacation home is close, no need to go anywhere else. We were on the hunt for a simple cheese and charcuterie light meal. This market has a decent gourmet cheese case, it's not close to Whole Foods cheese case, but it had good goat, brie and blue options. The deli case had good salami/soppressata options. Crackers, fruit and a small bag of nuts and we had ourselves a Groveland version of a cheese/charcuterie platter. We opted for a chilled Rosé, no Whispering Angel in the cold case, but we settled on an inexpensive Chateau Ste. Michelle with a twist top...just in case we couldn't find a wine key. So there you have it, you too can assemble a terrific light meal with wine and without spending a fortune. Very little dishes too! Getting there: This local grocery store is right off the main road (you can't miss it). It is in the same parking lot as the gym and pizza restaurant. Parking is tight so go early if you need to. Experience: I am not sure if it's a mountain town thing, but everyone in there was so nice. The woman at the register even made conversation with me about my poncho. When I say this store has everything, I needed to get out of there before I bought the whole store. Pizza bites, cookies, deli food, all the comfort foods and then some. They even have a whole vegan section. I loved staying in Groveland anyways, but knowing that this store is here makes me want to stay each time. read more

There does not seem to be social distancing guides for getting in line. Used my cart to keep distance. In the deli department, worker did not have mask over face as they were cutting meat. I heard a customer ask for them to fix the mask and the attempt was not successful. Was going to order from deli but chose to leave instead. The checkout clerk had a face shield on. I think after nine months in a pandemic date understand the fish shields aren't sufficient. With all the visitors they got the driving through you think they would take care. Do not recommend and will not go back. read more

Our recent stay in quaint little Groveland, CA saw us visit the local supermarket no fewer than four times. On each visit, I found myself admiring the small but well-stocked market, noting that it was kept clean and organized far beyond similarly sized markets in urban SoCal. Produce was fresh and wholesome, with none of that "rotten produce" smell you sometimes encounter at small markets. The meat counter had a good selection of cuts and ground meats. Shelf-stable items had a variety of selections, and best of all, these foods were all reasonably priced, even for the only game in town. Cold case dairy and drinks didn't break this description-- all good stuff. Check out crew actually had conversations with you, unlike big chain places at home. When we're back in Groveland, we'll be back to this little market. Sure, they're the only market in the immediate area, but that doesn't mean they're anything except wonderful. read more

Pros: Really great selection of items for such a small store. I was impressed at how much they pack into a small space. Friendly staff! Con: The store had a rancid meat smell, which lingered on my clothes well after leaving it. This is a very good market for being in Groveland. If I was reviewing this in San Mateo maybe I'd give it a 3, but in Groveland it is a 5, so average down to 4. They have an excellent meat counter, good produce, Foster Farms chicken and many times it is cheaper than the Safeway stores. They have a good stock of anything else you might need too. If you're going to head to Groveland, no need to hump in stuff, this place has what you'll need. read more

Although I didn't have the best service upon originally visiting, I really appreciate someone from the store reaching out to me and trying to right my experience. Also even though the main gripe was how long it took to make my sandwich, it was suuuuper tasty which is why I'm also upping my original stars (I created my own with turkey and a bunch of fixings). COVID is still a thing people!! Reading comments it seems as though it's the norm around here. Hey, I'm just visiting lol and I was shook seeing all the unmasked employees and customers. Yea, I know the mandate was lifted but c'mon now the market is small, isles narrow, crowds grouping just standing around talking. Please don't take offense locals I live in a small community myself with a market known only to us locals and visitors of course. However, crowds are maintained while individuals practice social distancing. Anyways, enough about that. Food selection is marvelous for such a small marketplace, we found everything we needed and more! I even found my rare brand of pupusas here, and they offered spinach and cheese, only seen online, that was a plus! Price hike $3 but I didn't care lol I wanted that flavor. Deli smelled good but the plastic shields staff wore instead of masks creeped me out. Nevertheless, if you need something during your vacation visit , they got it. read more

Coming from the Bay Area, where there are plentiful and large mega-stores, it's hard not to compare with this local store and find it bit lacking. Item selection is a bit limited, checker lines can queue up, the interior appearance is a little dated, etc. That said, there's still a lot to enjoy here. Service is very friendly, they have all the essentials, and their deli counter is pretty good (not necessarily amazing but still a good value). Additionally, the location is perfect for those staying in the area - - especially for visitors vacationing in Pine Mountain Lake. read more
