Marathon Deli in Kensington has become our favorite place ever since they opened! We stop by often, whether it's to grab dinner or just treat ourselves. Their gyros are absolutely amazing and our go-to choice for takeout. Today we stopped in for a vanilla-strawberry ice cream and a chocolate milkshake, and it made the visit even more special because they had live music playing. We found out they have live music every Thursday, which creates such a fun and welcoming atmosphere. The food is consistently delicious, the desserts are fantastic, and the friendly vibe keeps us coming back. If you haven't been to Marathon Deli yet, you're definitely missing out. Ordered ahead on the website, I showed up 20 minutes earlier than I was supposed to, and they started preparing my food right away. Got a fresh gyro and the Greek-seasoned fries within 10 minutes of arriving. I took the food home and was delighted. The gyro meat was incredible, the pita was pillowy, and there was a perfect amount of sauce & veggies on it. The fries were also delicious. The seasoning they put on them made them taste like fries I had never had before. I dipped them in the sauce they have and loved it. I will definitely be back, and will be telling others of how good the food was. I see a bunch of 1 stars from when it first opened. We already been here 3x since they opened. Great place with great quality food! This is our new go-to for greek food! We drove by one day and saw this place being newly opened. There's not many casual greek place in the area, so we bookmarked it and came to try for lunch! This place is very clean and neat. a Bar with 2 TV playing sports, decent amount of tables with spacious room that you won't feel too crowded. Seatings set up outside are decent and clean (And we brought our dog with us so that is nice!). The first time we got there was easy and smooth, the counter ordering is easy to spot and smooth procedure. Menu is also not too complicated with good options. I'd say it is definitely a casual, yet grant restaurant to eat in, or out. We had the pork gyro meal (suppose pork is the most common meat option for gyro in Greece?! We always thought it's lamb!), and we had a father's day special octopus meal, since we have a kid and they don't have highchair at the restaurant, we decided to get it to-go. Wow, the quality!!! Everything is so fresh and well cooked. Flavor is great with the port cooked crispy and marinated perfectly. The fresh ingredients like tomato chunks and lettuce are fresh and not dull! This is THE place! They know how to make a good gyro and not skim as well. The amount was perfect for a big guy. I couldn't finish one myself and shared with my toddler - and we both were full with just one meal worth! Since then we have had more gyros, some splatter/bowl, milkshake and desserts. I can't find one thing that is bad and each time solved my cravings! Overall, YES. Not only the price is affordable (Did I mention $7 gyro on Mondays!?), it is actually decent quality food and place to eat out. We were not expecting this wonderful, lively restaurant in the the Kensington commercial strip at Plyers Mill & CT Ave. It's spacious with great seating and an interior that makes you proud to be Greek. We were fortunate to come for dinner on Thursday and catch Achilles playing some traditional Greek music - a real treat for us which only added to the high qualify cuisine. (As other reviewers have noted, this place can be busy, so plan to enjoy the ambience as your warm food is being made). Been waiting for this place to open ! I live in the Kensington area and am so amazed at the diversity in cuisine. The restaurant is easy to find, parking is around the back. Could be better lit, but it is ample. Upon entering, the restaurant is clean, well lit and simple yet elegant aesthetic. Plenty of space too, was not expecting that! They even have a lovely outdoor sitting area. I had read through the menu before arriving so I could have an idea of what I wanted to try. They have ample variety and a whole bar too. I was greeted by two gentlemen working at the counter. They were both so friendly. I asked about a couple items and they were able to explain what each item was and gave me a couple recommendations. I ordered a chicken gyro meal (comes with a drink and fries), spanakopita, and a dessert. I wasn't sure what dessert to try but the gentleman was able to give me some suggestions. Got my order in about 12 minutes. Brought it home and opened it up right away! Gyro tasted fresh, well seasoned and just yummy! Fries were warm and well seasoned, I forgot to grab my drink which I was disappointed by, but nothing I'd personally make a fuss over. I did not get to try the dessert yet. But I can't wait to try it ! (Sorry can't remember the name! Looks like it's a custard type of dessert with pastry dough on top). Overall I was very satisfied. I stopped in to get dinner with my dad yesterday and wanted to try this place since it new to the area. It wasn't hard to find parking because the restaurant was not super crowded and there were spots available behind the restaurant. We decided to sit outside after we ordered since the weather was nice. I had the chicken souvlaki pita value meal and it was a large portion. The staff was friendly when we ordered and someone even came by to check and see how everything was after we started the meal. Checked on some ingredients for my wife who has to be careful. about allergies. Food was made correctly including special order for my wife and was pretty quick. Walking into this restaurant I felt the authentic Greek ambiance right away. I've been to Greece and miss the cuisine the most. The food was amazing and came out pretty fast for the amount of customers in the restaurant. The customer service we received is worth mentioning. I highly recommend visiting Marathon Deli whenever you're in the mood for some Greek food! Their bottle of Telios Cabernet Sauvignon is great if you're in the mood for a dry red wine. I was so looking forward to the opening of Marathon Deli in Kensington, but I think I made the mistake of trying the restaurant too soon. First, ordering at the counter took so long. I didn't expect a line of four people to take 15-20 minutes to place my order. The poor guy in front of me ended up leaving after trying to order and constantly being told we are out of that. Once ordered, I was surprised to see how fast we got service, unfortunately we only got one of the two meals ordered. I explained to the person serving the food what we were still waiting on, and sadly it never came. After 5-10 minutes of waiting, asked someone else for help, and finally got food about 15 minutes after the original food arrived. The last issue I had was it seemed the staff is trained to look away and avoid people asking for help. I went to the counter for a box and watched three different employees that could obviously see me standing there avoid asking if there was anything that I needed. Finally stopped someone and got help. While the food was good, at this point it wasn't good enough to make it worth my time to try again. I will likely wait a long time before giving them another shot. I sure hope things improve, because again, I was really looking forward to this opening. read more

George makes some of the best gyros I've had, and the custom sauce is incredible! You can really tell this place is built with passion and hard work. It's family owned, and both George and his wife are constantly grinding to make the restaurant successful. Finding good staff can be tough, but with their persistence and dedication, I know everything will fall into place. Place was bigger than I expected. They've only been open less than a week. Everything looks really nice, clean, and bright inside. Staff was friendly throughout the visit. For an appetizer, I tried the Saganaki Bites. They were good. Fried cheese-filled balls with honey. I'd give them an 8/10. My only issue was the price. At $15 for the portion size, I probably wouldn't order that specific appetizer again. I also tried the Falafel Gyro for $11.99, which I'd rate 8/10 as well. It definitely satisfied the gyro craving I'd been having. I originally ordered baklava for dessert, but they were out, so I let them choose a replacement. They gave me cheesecake and some amaretto cookies. The cheesecake tasted fine overall, but it was still frozen in the middle even after sitting for a while, so I'd give it a 6.5/10. Nothing special, but still decent. The amaretto cookies were soft and exactly what you'd expect -- 8/10. I waited a little over 35 minutes for my takeout order, but I came around 4 PM and the place was packed with the evening rush, so I can't really complain too much about that. They've only just opened, so I'm sure they're still getting into rhythm. Overall, I'll definitely try their food again. They also have a bar that I plan on checking out soon. Third visit was the charm. Service was fast and friendly at the bar (wasn't crowded). Food (crispy chicken sandwich) very good. Decent selection of beer. Arrived at 7pm as the sun was setting. 100 degrees outside and the sun was beaming through the front windows. They seriously need blinds. Still have the "new restaurant" growing pains I guess. Didn't know that kids under 18 are allowed to sit at the bar (?). We'll be back. Would like to try the classic gyro and pizza next time. read more

I got the falafel sandwich. I wish I wouldve asked for the dressing on the side because it was just too much.... The French fries were typical...they gave it to me with the house sauce on the side. The sauce was okay but I would probably add some ketchup to it. It didn't have enough flavor for me so I ate most of the fries with ketchup. Went because of the hype. I would give them zero stars if I could. We ordered from them a bunch of times but it was always irritating how long it would take to get them to answer the phone. Now they just don't. and after it rings for about a minute it just cuts you off. I spent over 10 minutes trying to getthru to them on several occasions and finally gave up. So happy to see Marathon Deli opened in Kensington, Maryland. My wife and I have been there multiple times for lunch. She love their Greek salad and always has enough to take home for lunch the next day. There subs and fries are my favorite. There are so many dishes I have yet to try. Also comfortable to hang out with the bar and especially outside tables when weather is nice. They go beyond counter service and check with you while dining. The inside of this location is gorgeous, but my food was inedible. I looked forward to visiting this location as I used to love the one in College Park. I ordered a chicken cheesesteak with no mayo, waited 15 min for it to be ready (much longer than expected) and carried it back to my office a block away. When I opened the sandwich it was so drowned in mayo that I couldn't pick it up without mayo running down my arm. The bottom bread was soaked through and oozed mayo THROUGH the bread when touched. After mopping one half of the sandwich with eight paper towels, it still had at least 2 tablespoons of mayo on it. I gave up. read more

After waiting a long time for our neighborhood Greek restaurant, we were very disappointed in several things: despite my husband's specific request that the chicken gyro not have any sauce, they put a sauce on the gyro. Fortunately, there was no cucumber (usual) in it. However, the chicken had no taste whatsoever. It was covered with lettuce and tomato, whereas my husband's beef/lamb gyro had no lettuce at all. His meat was very tasty and had the right amount of spices. Both were wrapped in a very heavy bread, which my husband liked but I didn't. I much prefer a lighter bread similar to naan. I ended up sharing my lettuce with my husband and putting the ranch dressing (extra salad dressing) on my sandwich. This place is very expensive compared to the Big Greek Cafe in White Flint. It does have Mousssaka (not on the website menu) for $20 with only 1 side, whereas the Moussaka in Kensington's White Flint is $16.50 with 2 sides. That one has 3 large servings, but I don't know the size of Kensington's Moussaka. Honestly, even tho this restaurant is walking distance from our house, we will probably prefer to drive to Kensington White Flint. Also, we're not sure if the pretty blue & white paper/foil box is recycleable per the county's ordinance, so we didn't recycle it. read more

Nice atmosphere. Didn't expect full bar (wine & beer). Staff was pleasant and ordered my take out gyro value meal (with drink and side salad) and a desert - orange cake. They issued me a number. Very shortly someone from the kitchen brings two boxes and asks if I need a bag. She disappears and another woman arrives with the bag and I ask about my drink and she shows me a can. I say I was expecting a fountain drink which she then goes back and gets it. I assumed I had everything and left. I get home and I see that I did not get my desert. I think this store's order flow is very flawed, the kitchen should know everything that was ordered and make sure everything is included and not hand off to multiple people. It should not be up to the customer to check their work. Gyro was okay but wasn't that warm and there was no yogurt sauce so it was bit on the dry side. Side salad was quite good but and a big but, it had two olives that were not pitted. Who puts olives with Pitts in them in a salad? That's a trip to the dentist coming up. This is a brand new store with new staff, but someone needs to be driving the bus. read more
