It had been a while since I last ate at Marcellos Pizza. Since I was in the neighborhood, I decided to stop by for a quick slice. When I looked at the pizzas on display, they appeared to have been sitting on the shelf for a while. I asked the staff if they were making a fresh batch, and he told me to come back in about 15 minutes. I ordered the Original Pesto Slice ($6.67) and added chicken ($0.83) for a total of $7.50. The staff asked if I wanted the pesto slice with mushrooms or another topping. I chose the pesto with mushrooms, added the chicken, and they put the pizza back into the oven to heat it. When I received my order, the pizza was piping hot and tasted very fresh. Even after going back into the oven with the chicken, the crust was cooked just right. Overall, I really enjoyed the pesto pizza with chicken and mushrooms. It was very good, and if I'm in the neighborhood, I would definitely come back again. read more

We stopped by for a late night bite at Marcelo's after seeing Alice Phoebe Lou at the newly renovated gorgeous Castro theater! Even at 10pm the place was bustling with regulars who claimed Marcelo's was their favorite neighborhood haunt. We were greeted warmly & picked a slice each (combo for me & mushroom pesto for the hubby). The pizza was absolutely delicious especially the crust (and I am very picky about my pizzas) which was like a savory cookie! Not greasy, flavorful & just delish! The cheese pizza slice was just ok, with none of the melty, gooey cheese effect that I like. Ya know, when you take a bite, and pull the slice away, how you get the strings of cheese from your mouth to the slice? None of that. Worst experience EVER. .75 box charge is no where posted they are unforgiving about it. You charge me $6 a slice and then slide in a charge fee AND a box fee. This is absolutely, positively and without a doubt the worst pizza I've ever had, and I'm old and I've eaten pizza in all the major cities and throughout Europe (and Italy). It looked terrible when I walked in, but I was in a hurry to see a movie across the street in the newly refurbished Castro Theater and I had no time to go elsewhere. I ordered a slice of sausage. When the lady brought it over, it looked even worse than at the counter. It was a small slice, it was cold, the dough was gummy and flavorless, and worse, the cheese was burned and there was no sausage. I took 2 bites and threw it in the garbage, opting for popcorn at the theater! I know it's been around for years, but I don't see how. And at over $6 per small slice, it is outrageously overpriced. Conveniently located in the heart of the Castro, open 7 days a week and open late (by San Francisco standards). If you want a quick meal without a full restaurant experience, this will do you. But comparing this to NY-style pizza or actual NY pizza will be disappointing, so just be thankful you're not eating 7-Eleven pizza instead. Though stick to the thin slices since the Sicilian slices are horrible and should be avoided at all costs! I was close to giving this place a solid A-OK (3-stars), but that Sicilian slice was a 1-star experience, hence the 2-star average. Cheese Slice: It's $5 for a slice while a similarly sized and much better tasting slices can usually be found in New York City for $3. It's not a bad a slice or anything, it's just not great. It was partially cold, even after they put it in the oven to reheat. And the dough seemed a bit thick for it's style. But there was a decent amount of sauce and cheese. It did the trick for filling me up when I was a little hungry. Pesto Potato Slice: A rare find, but a must try when they do have it stock. Something so hearty about carbs on carbs. I'm normally a red sauce guy, but the pesto mixed with red potato slices is just magical. Plus tons of cheese. Pepperoni Sicilian Slice: Potentially the worst Sicilian slice I've ever had! It seemed like they baked the dough separately, added some sauce and cheese and did a quick re-bake. I strongly suspect this is what they did since under the sauce was a browned bread top. First off, the pizza smelled and looked amazing. The problem was that when the slice was picked up, it could not hold its own and drooped down. At that moment, I knew the crust wasn't right and the pizza was soggy from the center out. I had to put it in the air fryer to get the crust a little crisp. Taste was okay, remind me of the Costco pizza when they had the combo but except this had a thinner crust. Not sure if I'd buy a pizza again for dinner, but this place would work out great if you had a late night and are craving a pie. read more

I had placed an order through grub hub on 10/31/25 for delivery. It was estimated the delivery would be in 30-45 mins. Time had passed and the estimated delivery time added an additional 45 mins. I went to the location to find out that my grub hub delivery person was waiting for my pizza to be made and that grub hub orders were not being processed. I spoke to the manager at the time and he said there was nothing he can do in regard to refunding my order or assisting in correct the situation. I asked if I could just have whatever slices were available to complete my order and he said no - and that slices were the only option. I ended up having to purchase 6 slices for TWICE the amount of the whole pizza that I had ordered. This felt like a money grab which normally I would not say about Marcello's - since they usually are quite reliable. Not only did service fail me today, but I wonder what they would have done to the grub hub delivery guy if I didn't come to sort it out. Marcello's offers two different crusts, regular and Sicilian. Unless you really like a super thick crust (think "focaccia"), choose the original. The Sicilian crust was just a lotta lotta bread. I could barely taste the delicious, quality toppings. Live and learn. This legacy business has been serving up great pizza for more than 30 years. Marcello's is an important piece of the neighborhood handily positioned not just across the street from the gem of all movie palaces but nearby all the nightlife. So, if you need to soak up some high ethanol libations and want to grab a slice or a whole pie, Marcello's is tops. (Just get the regular crust, the Sicilian is just too much bread, trust). A great place to stop by for a slice of pizza if you're ever craving it and around the area! My friend and I popped in after our soulcycle class and we both got the pesto mushroom pizza and it was delicious! The slice is huge, there is a good amount of pesto sauce as the base and also they heat it up for you when you order so when you eat it, you get the most insane cheese pull. The pizza is just a tad bit greasy for my liking. And it's also a bit expensive for just a slice of pizza ($7.25). I would come again only if I'm really craving it or in the area, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get this. read more

Back working across the street at the Castro theatre so I've been hitting Marcelo's again (was here all last summer on the first phase). Anyhow....this the best NY style pie in the city. Hands down. Not to pigeon-hole them as ny style because I'm not sure they even advertise that that's what they are. But their round pies are indeed that. The crust/cornicione is perfect, the sauce is perfect, the cheese, the pepperoni....its all just how it supposed to be. I don't bother with other toppings. Mostly just pepperoni or cheese. Occasionally I'll have them load up a cheese with anchovies and that is divine too. Some of the best simple pizza in the city! The crust is substantial with slight chew but not too thick/dry and the price is right for the portions that you're getting. They do not skimp on the cheese here and the flavor profiles of the pizzas are on the basic side, which is honestly hard to find in Sf and done well. I took off one star because the overall flavor of the pizza could be slightly more seasoned, but if you're a simple food lover, this is absolutely the pizzeria for you. I love coming here when it's later in the night since parking can be a pain. I also like the seating here, if you're a larger person, you may find it cramped but if you're an smaller introvert, the seating will be perfectly private. Now for pizza crust comparisons... I would say the crust is like a fancier Costco crust (which I think is a compliment). The crust is similar also to Long Bridge but the toppings here are less flavorful. The Marcellos crust is definitely more substantial than the slightly undercooked chewy crust of il casaro, way softer than the crunchy/dry little star pizza. If you're looking for a simple, large slice of basic pizza late at night, this is the spot for you! read more

At the time of this writing, there are four places to get a slice of pizza in the Castro, plus two other places that only offer whole pies. I've tried them all (cheese and veggie slices), and since Escape From New York sold their Castro location to another pizza place, Marcello's is my favorite. Not to slag off the other choices, but overall Marcello's slices have the thin crust I like and the tastiest sauce, and lots of specialty combos to choose from (I like the Greek combo veggie special). Not quite *Great* but I have no complaints about the product. One suggestion (and I hope the management reads this). I realize this is 2025 and everyone conducts business on their friggin' phone, but it would be nice to have a COMPLETE menu in the shop either on paper or on the big board behind the counter so when you want to order a whole pie or something that's not on the partial menu that's shown up there on the board, you can do so on the premises without having to look up the menu on your phone. I almost ordered from home for pickup, but even the online menu only shows prices for small size pies, and not prices for medium, large or family size pies. The friendly counter person told me to look up what I wanted on my phone, and even after doing so they had to look up the different prices based on size of pizza. It's way more cost-effective to get a large or family size pizza and share it or have some left over the next day, so I got a large pie and it was big enough to give away three slices to some hungry homeless people on the street and take the rest home for myself. So yeah, please just print up some nice big menus on card stock and laminate them so a customer can walk in and figure out what to order without fiddling with their phone and then having to ask the clerk for more detailed pricing info on the checkout terminal. This spot was recommended to me since #1, it's pizza, which I LOVE, #2, just outside Castro Station and next to Rossi's Deli! I went there hoping for a Hawaiian slice, which I of course got distracted and didn't ask if they don't normally have, but they did have a Sicilian style hawaiian. I am not usually one for that style of pizza and am a hardcore NYC style pizza person, sorry. Although I am not a huge fan of that style I will eat it. The crust was pretty good and nice and crunchy but personally it's just too much pizza dough for me, still tasty and good though. I also got a slice of mushroom and sausage. That was NYC style, which was good. They reheated it up before I took it to go and it was beautiful! The customer service was amazing. It seemed as though the person at the register was possibly still some what new so the female employee was helping him and she seemed like she had a very pleasant way about her with helping others. This time I wasn't going too far, so it was still hot by the time I got to eat it. I did, as usual, add some Parmesan cheese and peppers on it, because..one can NEVER have too much of that haha. I can't say it was my favorite spot, simply because of the variety that I usually get, but it's possible I might go back, eventually. read more
