i've been eating french at this location since about 1988. that's when i began to lease a small office on the second floor of the ross garage next door. the first proprietor was a british guy whose menu was basic bistro, not much in the way of originality but it was very well done indeed, maybe it was more what was once termed "continental". a solid 4* day in and day out, french cuisine as interpreted by a guy who grew up eating pork n beans for breakfast. a few years later, a young couple dan and holly moved in and changed the name from whatever it was to marche aux fleurs. the menu got a lot more interesting, never mind there were some initial hiccups. I began to eat lunch on the patio. this not so much because i like eating outside but the lovely holly usually served tables there... go figure. the food improved after a short period of adjustment, sometimes it lapsed but there were periods when if you wanted to see a menu in french, it was one of few, certainly, and best, perhaps, in marin... for what that's worth. then for various important reasons i completely forgot about the place, until a few weeks ago when i needed something new. here's the impression i came away with: get a reservation for sure on weekends. prepare to only understand only about half of what your dinner companion says because the tables are crowded and the room acoustics are terrible. pay attention to the european wines on the list because they're good and reasonably priced. the appetizers are well done, especially liked some kind of thing done with avacado of all things. i didn't like the cassoulet, the stew was crowded into a smaller kind of crockery with a huge piece of undercooked cabbage occupying almost half of the volume. the fish on the other hand was very good. service was very friendly, but not nearly enough for the number of diners, unless the problem was in the kitchen... slow maybe? overall, i'd say give it another try. read more

First off a couple coming to dine does not want to sit next to 2 toddlers! Pounding on bench the family kept getting up every 15 minutes to use the bathroom! The cushion on the bench would pop up every time the man got up. Next thing a man sitting next to my husband flipped his proceso over glass broke the liquid got onto my boot and floor was not cleaned up all the way do it smelled like booze on the floor for our remaining meal. We felt the food was extremely salty. The owner never came over to check on us. We will not go back. This is 4 visit sad but there no interest in getting the patrons seated correctly! read more

The food was quite good as is the atmosphere at the outside patio, if the weather is nice. There are only two restaurants in super quiet small town of Ross (the other being a pizza place) so they have sort of cornered the market so to speak. Our waitress was not super friendly. We had asked for some olive oil and butter with our bread but had to remind her about the olive oil. When doing so, she just abruptly said 'yes', and then went and got it (as if to say 'yes, I know, okay?'). I've now been here twice and while I really enjoyed the food, I am not rushing to return back here, although I would not refuse returning back here if family or friends want to. read more

The burger is to die for. It's only offered once a week on the weekly special. If you don't get there early they run out of burgers. You can also get them to go. The staff is super friendly. I challenge you to find a better burger in Marin. read more

We enjoyed a delightful meal last night. It was perfect! I had the daily special, which was a large portion of delicious baby back ribs. My wife had as very special dish, the roasted Cauliflower. So good! The outdoor patio is such a lovely setting, and the servers are excellent. Highly recommended! read more

Having a birthday in the weird in-between time sandwiched between Christmas and New Year's is admittedly a weird thing. Hubby does a great job finding new spots to try but because of this weird timing, I feel like we get the short end of the stick sometimes with tired businesses and limited ingredient selections. We arrived here on a weeknight at opening for dinner and were seated immediately. I loved the unfussy but still elegant atmosphere, and we were one of two tables occupied for the first half hour/45 min or so. We started with a bottle of sparkling water ($8.50) while we looked over the menu. A very unassuming basket of bread and salted butter arrived and WOW, honestly if I had stopped after the bread, I would have given them a solid 5 stars. The texture was fluffy and chewy, and the flavor was complex, homemade, and insanely delicious. For starters, I ordered the French Onion Soup ($12) and he ordered the Chevre salad ($15.50). For our entrees, he ordered the Orecchiette ($25) and I opted for the Gnocchi ($25) after I saw it being hailed as "lighter than air" and the "pillowy dish this restaurant is known for." Unfortunately, these statements were both very wrong this time. The soup was piping hot and full of goodies, but the surface was heavy with oil and made the experience very messy and off putting. The bread on top was so saturated with oil, it was completely inedible which was sad because the cheese was very good, and the onions were well cooked. The chevre salad was good but had a strange texture to the lardons which was oddly chewy but not in a satisfying way. For the entrees, hubby's pasta dish was under-seasoned, and the pasta tasted more really undercooked or stale than toothsome/al dente. My entree was even more in need of help, and was bland, dense and all things you hope gnocchi is NOT. I was so hopeful when reading about pillowy clouds, but these were heavy, over-handled, and chewy almost like boiled mochi dumplings. The squash was also partly unpeeled and undercooked almost to the point of being crunchy which was a terrible texture pairing to the gummy, rubbery gnocchi. The gnocchi sat heavy in my stomach like rocks after eating. Dessert unfortunately was not much better. I ordered the Hot Chocolate Cake with ice cream ($12) and he ordered the Salted Caramel Pots De Creme ($11). The chocolate cake was really bland and had nothing going for it in terms of remarkability. I'm not sure why they need so much advanced notice to fire this dish- it didn't have a complex souffle texture or molten center. The pots de creme was also very lackluster, and ultimately topping the cake with the PDC made things a little better but not much improvement overall. Location is convenient in the adorable downtown Ross with free street parking on both sides. Restaurant is easy to find, and the ambiance is welcoming and warm. Food was a wild ride in terms of lack of attention to detail on cooking and seasoning. Although it was a lot of locally sourced ingredients, they were just not prepared well or well-seasoned the night we were there. Overall, overpriced for the experience we had, although probably comparable for the area, and not something I enjoyed (other than the amazing bread and ambiance). Unfortunate, but was this just the season, or is this their new normal? read more

Food, service & surroundings were wonderful! Outdoor dining is a nice feature. What else does one require?

The charm is in the patio. When we asked to be seated outside we were told an adamant no, that our reservation was inside. When we overheard several parties without reservations escorted out to the patio (another party of three, like us) and a party of six, it set a very negative tone. Presumably, they were regulars. Good restaurants make every guest feel welcome. The food was very good but the experience overall was negative from the start. I would never recommend Marche to anyone. read more

Wow. We've eaten here on many occasions under old and new management. Never were disappointed until we decided to try take-out of their Tuesday special Fried Chicken. The description of three piece chicken dinner would have been more accurate if it said a leg, and two very small boneless pieces of a breast and thigh. I've never seen a smaller portion served in a restaurant. The cole slaw was also a joke. Just a very small thimble and tasteless to boot. Best part was the corn bread! As they say in the movies - leave the chicken - take the cornbread. read more

The food was so good. Meatballs, three different salads, steak, hummus, and burrata were outstanding.

The outside area is so beautiful, field stone walls, tables outside with heaters and umbrellas. It was the first time I had dined outside since Covid, it was my birthday! I was so excited it was so great I forgot to take pictures. Service was prompt, social distancing between tables was correct and all of the wait staff wore masks it was perfect. The halibut /beet puree was far more complex than expected, cauliflower sautéed pieces had caramelized flavor. The medjool dates, maple bacon, pecorino cheese is great to start. & the housemade gnocchi w/morel mushrooms, asparagus, English peas, white truffle-porcini cream was ethereal for an regular devotee. Finish, Myers lemon cream Brulé!!! Perfect! Tuesday special was fried chicken, but Wednesday is meatballs! I will be back, I say 'Check it out' !!! read more

We celebrated our wedding anniversary at Marche aux Fleurs last week. I loved my dinner, my wife disliked hers, so this is really a mixed review, causing me to be hesitant to recommend the restaurant. Service was excellent. Our server was attentive, as were the helper servers. The server knew it was our anniversary (front of house did their job and relayed the info from our reservation), and made a special effort to help us celebrate. I ordered the white corn soup (with smoked paprika and cornbread croutons) as an appetizer and loved the creamy full-bodied taste. My wife ordered the beet salad (roasted gold and pink beets/albion strawberries/goat cheese/pistachio/citrus vinaigrette) and was raving about the vinaigrette and pistachios. So far so great! For my main, I had the wild king salmon (fig-leaf wrapped/farro/romano beans/fig and olive tapenade). Given a choice, I'll order salmon if a restaurant has it featured on the menu, and this combination sounded great. It was served at the perfect temperature (for my taste), hot, but still slightly rare on the inside. All the flavors went well together. My wife was very disappointed with her main, the organic polenta (farm egg/grilled summer squash/huitlacoche/cherry tomato/grilled green onion/salsa verde). The plate was gorgeous and looked appetizing. It sounded like this should be full of flavor. The veggies were great, but the star of the dish, the polenta, was tasteless, as was the huitlacoche. Did the chef forget to season it? Not wanting to make waves, my wife didn't mention her disappointment. Finally for dessert, we ordered the warm flourless chocolate cake (72% guittard chocolate, crushed almond amaretti, Tahitian vanilla ice cream). It was served with an anniversary candle on top (thanks!) and we both enjoyed it. It was dense, warm, chocolaty, and the ice cream was exactly what was needed to balance it out. Will we try it again? Lets start with the good. This quaint little restaurant is an attractive bistro setting. Food was ok, nothing special for the high price. The daily cheese appetizer was very small in the cheese compared to the membrillo. The salad was very fresh and nicely dressed. Steak was well-cooked but a very stringy cut and the accompanying vegetables very, very garlicky. I love garlic, so not a problem, but it was extremely strong. Duck cassoulet has mashed sweet potato??? Strange. I expect beans with cassoulet. But the real problem was in the kitchen team's haste to get out. We had our server pressuring us to order the dessert before our mains were even served... twice. Then again when she set down our mains she said we really had to order dessert right away because "they are turning off the oven". Really? We finished our meal and will never come back. read more

We were visiting my Dad and Step-mother recently and they made reservations at this charming little restaurant. The ambiance made a terrific first impression and we were fortunate enough to have a cute, quiet table on the patio. My husband and I started by sharing the Little Gems salad which was amazing! I wish I'd ordered my own portion, it was too good to share. Next, I enjoyed the Halibut which was outstanding, loved the farro salad it was served on, and the seasoning was perfect. My husband enjoyed the Mancini Tuffoli and my father had the gnocchi while my stepmom had the daily special Petrale Sole. My husband and father loved their meals and my stepmom thought the sole was just pretty good. We were all stuffed so we skipped dessert. I think this will be a must every time we visit Marin. read more

My new favorite restaurant in Marin! Wonderful ambiance that toes the line between neighborhood warmth and elegance. We came on a weeknight and enjoyed the Tuesday Fried Chicken special (with cornbread that was the best I've ever had) and Gnocchi with foraged mushrooms. Moroccan-spiced cauliflower soup hit the spot while dining under the stars. The prices are surprisingly reasonable for well-executed nuanced cuisine and upscale atmosphere. Reminded me of a dinner at a bistro in Europe. Service was excellent and friendly, and it was overall a pretty magical meal under the garden lights on a beautiful spring night in Ross. Not many restaurants can be both a great date night out and a family weeknight dinner, but Marche Aux Fleurs pulls it off. read more

I discovered a fantastic salad that hits every note - especially on a warm day. Marche's Little Gem salad. It's light - yet satiating. The dressing is to die for. Just the right amount of blue cheese crumbles. Followed by the delicate Halibut. It's seasoned beautifully. If you enjoy the warmth, they have outdoor seating in a garden type of environment. If you prefer to stay on the cooler side, the indoor ambiance is equally appealing. What stands out most to me though is their eye on every detail. And I mean every eye and every detail. The best part of my evening was the 2016 Perenit wine I brought and of course my guests. No one enjoyed their dinner. The steak was tough. Orchiette was rock hard and tasteless. I was told it's because it's homemade?!? Lol Really?!? It was substituted (without my approval) with Bucatini. No one seemed to care ... they just wanted to end the night at 8:30. Why are you in this biz? Cold food and hard tasteless pasta does not cut it. No dessert options because staff wanted to go home. Had to go elsewhere for a proper dessert. We held a wedding rehearsal dinner for 32 on Marché's outdoor terrace last weekend. Darren and Alicia were terrific to work with in the planning stages - they suggested a menu with items that covered the dietary limitations we sent over, had a sensible wine list to choose from. The food was tasty, abundant, and beautifully presented, and like Darren and Alicia, the staff were super. The terrace itself is like sitting in an arbor, there's no sense of traffic from the street or real visibility to the alley on the side - you just enjoy the green surroundings and the lights strung above. The indoor space at Marché is also very attractive. What a great find - highly recommended. read more

Has new ownership. Great location. New owners appear to have invested a lot of money upgrading Kitchen. Not much done to former dining space. I know it is hard to believe but Marche does not have a Chardonnay on their wine list. Chardonnay is the Mother's milk of Ross Valley Moms/women. Why would you do this??????? All wines require a customer to buy a half bottle. Sorry not my deal. Anyone interested in dining there should call ahead and get some guidance as to current plans and what the future holds. read more

Bread rationing on Bastille Day: deplorable customer service. We each got one piece of bread. When my partner requested another he was denied. I insisted. We were denied categorically. A restaurant with a French name, albeit definitely not French, denying a customer bread in unthinkable and inexcusable. read more

My meal at Marche was true surprise and delight. I have been making an effort to focus on vegan fare, and this gorgeous, scrumptious cauliflower dish was packed with flavor, with interesting texture, and exotic sophistication. I ordered the fried chicken special for take out on Tuesday. Delish! I will take any opportunity to order fried chicken when it is on a menu, and this special did not disappoint! The chicken was fried and seasoned to perfection, not greasy at all. The cole slaw was on point, fresh and crunchy, not saucy or soggy - more, please ;) Last but certainly not least, the cornbread was moist and divine. I meant to have just a bite before I dug into the rest of the meal, but that first bite of cornbread was so enticing, I practically ate the whole thing before returning to the main event! Marche Aux Fleurs is one of my very favorite eating experiences in Marin! They have cool patio dining on warm evenings, impeccable service and the kind of artistry with food that reminds you what fine dining is supposed to be like. Last evening, when we arrived, the host and Dan, the chef/owner, were there to greet us. Cheerfully they explained their Covid protocols, and offered and amuse mains (a shot of hand sanitizer to start us on our way to our table). The reservations were carefully administered and we didn't have to linger before we were seated. The staff were diligently cleaning tables, and menus with quiet efficiency. The service didn't lose any of its usually panache while they adhered to caution, in fact the staff seemed confident and comfortable in what they were doing, which put us all at ease on our very first foray into dining out, in months. For those of you that are considering Marche Aux Fleur for the first time, you should know that the food is simultaneously familiar and inventive. The dishes range from Classic French (e.g. Cassoulet, a Corn Bisque, and Duck Confit), to their famous homemade Italian pasta (e.g. Pasta Carbonara, Tagliatelle, and light-as-air Gnocchi). All their dishes are notably locally sourced, and it shows ... the flavors are garden fresh. As regulars here will know, and you should too, this rich dining experience is not so haute as to lose its family dinner time feel. There are home cooking specialties done to perfection, weeknight specials (we think they need TWO Fried Chicken Tuesdays every week!) and several vegetarian selections that even a carnivore like me can enjoy! and choices that any (well, many) kids can enjoy... Meatballs for example. Though Marche Aux Fleur, like many places, has limited times and tables, their food, charm, and service have only come to stand out more so, in these days. We hope you get a table, have some wine, enjoy a fine meal, and let the stresses of our current state of affairs wick away, even if just for an evening. Bon Appetit! read more

I took my father to Marche Aux Fleurs for fathers day and he loved it, we had a great dinner. Dad was happy with the dining experience, which is just about the highest endorsement a restaurant can get in my book. I can recommend the Avocado crostini with salt cured tuna and the Bacon-wrapped dates starters. I sampled both on my first visit, and they were both executed flawlessly. For my main course, I had a pork fennel sausage pasta (orecchiette) which was spot on delicious. I also sampled their gnocchi with mushrooms and white truffle sauce which I can also recommend. I'd heard good things about this place so I brought my wife on what was to be our first date night in a over a year, due to COVID. I ordered the Halibut since it had been very highly reviewed. Unfortunately my halibut dish was essentially inedible. First off, the halibut was completely overcooked and dry. There wasn't a hint of moisture in it. It was like eating an overcooked chicken breast. Terrible. They served the Halibut with cannelini beans which were also essentially inedible. They were undercooked in the middle and had the consistency of something you'd find as a dried food provision. To top it all off, they threw in some green beans that were clearly old and not fresh - they were yellow which is the color they get in my garden when green beans are past their prime. They were an absolute chore to eat - it was like eating straw. All in all, my meal was very very bad. I rated two stars because I tasted my wife's gnocchi and those were good. I didn't want to make a scene or I would've sent my food back. Very disappointing. read more

Really enjoyed our dining experience here last night. With covid I felt safe in the outdoor space and sanitary conditions. The food was all excellent. We ordered the avocado crostini, gnocchi, Spanish snack mix, duck, short rib, and chocolate cake! Highly recommend their special of the evening which was the beef short rib. Very rustic and textured with a hint of bbq flavor. The cake takes 20 mins to make so order ahead. Service was also super! There are of course hundreds of wonderful restaurant in the SF Bay Area, including Marin. Marche deux fleur is at the top of our list. The menu while not large had wonderful variety. The portions were significant and most importantly the food from our arugula salad to my halibut and my wife's duck confit, was just outstanding. Halibut can be dry and boring, but the dish was superb. Staff friendly, restaurant appealing and warm. Service was a tad slow, but it allowed us to savor everything. Highest recommendation for this lovely restaurant. read more
