Favorite place to go for a coffee and breakfast empanada. A real gem of a place with a cute little patio to sit outside.

We've been dying to try Maria's Empanadas. We finally did and ordered three breakfast empanadas( sausage egg and cheese, chorizo, egg and cheese, ham and cheese). The breakfast empanadas were the best in my opinion. Seasoned perfectly, moist inside and nicely baked outside. Sausage egg and cheese was my absolute fave! Ground beef, chicken, and chicken chimichurri were ok. They lacked a lot of spice and flavor. Needed a spicy sauce or some flare with herbs and spices. I'll definitely be back for more breakfast empanadas soon! read more

By far, my favorite is the creamy spinach. These deliciously perfected, unique to Maria's style pastry of central, eastern Mexican origin are consistent amongst Denver empanadas. I like the corn and the other vegetarian ones too. I wish they would add a bean, cheese and chile one. Our family has come here for years since they opened. My son loves the Sierra and the Diego. My other son likes the egg ham and cheese one. The cafecitos are always strong and heavy bodied.. They have a fresh orange juice making machine. They also have some booze and wine and a plethora of Mexican aquas frescos for those with developed palates. Opt for the lemon ricotta cheesecake or a dipping sauce to kick the experience into a new dimension. Beautifully quaint s Broadway location with soccer affidionado appropriate Argentinian influence. Yum yum yummmmm! I came here for an early lunch and had three of their empanadas. The mushroom was probably my favorite, followed by the Tinga. All three were great but the Chorizo breakfast empanada probably ranked last. The empanadas were hot, fresh, and fully filled. It's always disappointing when you bite into an empanada to discover it's half air, and this was NOT the case with Maria Empanadas. Food overall is pretty meh. We think the corn, sierra, and caprese (kinda like pizza in an empanada) are decent; the rest is a little boring, sorta bland. Maybe it's just not our cup of tea. They do offer a variety of fillings tho. The roll cake is a little dry, and chocolate souffle is normal. read more

Was very excited to try this place out since it's nearby some shopping. We walk into a nice interior and their selection of food. There are many different options of empanadas, sweets, other savory foods, and coffees. We each got the ham and cheese as it was supposed to be their most popular. We also got the caprese and the Argentina. We did not get them heated. Just straight from the window box to our tray. The ham and cheese was much too thick and the dough was still completely raw when I bit into it. I couldn't taste the empanada whatsoever due to the raw dough. The caprese was slightly cold, which was disappointing because it would have been fantastic had it been warmed up. The Argentina was a huge hit, but also, slightly cold. The stuffing was good. My husband is picky, but couldn't really tell there was onion or bell peppers. I'd say that's a win. Would recommend based off of other reviews. We may have just had a bad batch. read more

What a gem. I came here on the recommendation of a friend and work and was not disappointed. I've returned more times than I care to count at this point. Every empanada I've had here has been delicious - but my favorites have been the corn and the caprese. Don't skip out on the sauce that you can add at the counter - that really can make or break your empanada experience. I recommend.....all of them. Hubs and I decided to try a new spot on a random Thursday night. Maria Empanada has a nice, laid back vibe, with a giant TV if you're interested in watching a game. Plenty of empanada options including at least 6 vegetarian options, wohoo! We got two veggie (corn and mushroom) and two meat (ham and cheese and chicken chimichuri). Everything was delicious. My hubs said the chicken chimichuri paired with the adobo salsa was amazing. That would be his pick between the two. For me, I love corn but it might be a bit on the sweet end for some. Highly recommend getting one or more salsas with any of the empanadas. We'll be back to try other options, including dessert :). read more

I visited Denver because at the time I was scheduled to get stationed at FT Carson Colorado. I always researched food places before going to a new city, and I remember seeing this establishment on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Maria Empanadas has the best empanadas. My mother n law is from Chile and she makes good empanadas, but this place has better; which is saying a lot. The owner is originally from Argentina, and my wife and I spoke to him. He's an amazing guy, and he took the time to explain to us what empanadas we should get, and even gave us a tour of his restaurant. The place is amazing and I enjoyed the hospitality. I would recommend this place if you want the best empanadas in your life. This is truly a staple in Denver!!! read more

Nice sit down area inside. The patio is right on a busy corner so get your megaphone in check (hard to be heard over traffic). Recommended they get some awnings or umbrellas for the tables to allow comfortable summer day seating. We were really introduced to ME via a virtual yelp event. When we went to pick up our kits, I bought a couple empanadas as snacks. We had the chicken chimichurri and the mushroom. Both were super delicious. The event was a trip, Lorena, who is the owner and a couple of her coworkers were hilarious and so welcoming. The empanadas we made were the beef and a veggie, ALSO delicious. Of course, now we have a problem, so we went back yet again to get some more so we could share with my mom. We got two of the chorizo bfast, caprese, chicken again, beef and mushroom again, and then we tried the dessert offerings. Everything was just as good as all the empanadas before. Great tasting empanadas. Loved the variety of fillings offered. They even have breakfast fillings! Tried 3 varieties-Chicken Chimichurri Empanada - Specialty Item, Beef Classico Empanada, and Empanada Gallega. The chicken chimichurri is best for those who are not into the Latin American flavors like me. While the beef one is. The gallega is a tuna based filling so that is geared more for fish or seafood lovers. The first 2 were very moist inside whereas the gallega was dry. I did appreciate the presentation on the gallega. Size and portions were appropriate. The chimichurri sauce on the other hand was disappointing. Not flavorful. Just parsley and pure red oil that looked like chili oil. None of that good quality EVOO. Would not recommend getting. The other sauces did not seem too appealing. Would just stick to purchasing the classic empanadas and no sauces. read more

I've been going to Maria Empanada for 5 years and so when I went to do an update I was surprised to see that Yelp thinks I've never reviewed the place. (Hey maybe I said something inappropriate and got filtered into the "52 other reviews not shown" area). So I'm saddened that this is (technically?) my first review of ME's and I'm further saddened that it is not a stellar one. And that's because I like the place and the people there. But just like you've gotta tell your friend when he's got a piece of food gumbah stuck to his cheek or a piece of toilet paper draggin' from his shoe, Maria E, I gotta tell you . . . your sauces/salsas suck. Have had the chimichuri and the chili mayo recently and both are worthless. The chimichuri is almost pure oil and the chili mayo is treacly sweet and not reminiscent of either chili or mayo. So, we were in a rush and didn't get to go to the original destination while trying to catch an early flight, but fortunately we had enough time to swing by here and get a taste of Maria Empanada. Think hot pockets, but actually really, really good. These creations are pre-made and waiting in a glass case. They had approx 12 - 15 different options including a couple of specialty empanadas. I went with the Italian (especially when I found out the eggs were scrambled - some had hard boiled) and the specialty chicken. The Italian was amazing, great flavor profile that you could clearly pick out all the ingredients. Used a little of the chipotle sauce that they had - great pairing! The specialty chicken was really good as well, probably just unfortunate that I ate it after the Italian - really I just wanted another Italian at that point. Prices are pretty reasonable, and the mall type setting this location is found in provides plenty of seating inside/outside. Really happy we made it by here, maybe we'll get to the original location one day. read more

Maria's is the holy grail of empanada shops. There are so many options - lunch or breakfast, but my go to is always the classic beef empanada. Can't go wrong on that one - it's amazing! Don't forget to grab some sauces when you cash out, they're extra but make the empanadas extra good! My go to sauce is always the sweet chili mayo. They fresh press the OJ by order so I recommend grabbing a glass. The espresso is wonderful too, they have an old espresso machine in the corner of the dinning room. We stumbled upon Maria Empanada when the restaurant we planned to eat at was closed. We had no idea that is was an award-winning, woman -owned restaurant. Our server was very friendly and explained all of the different types of empanadas since it was our first visit. She even gave us all the sauces to try. We had the 1/2 dozen... I went here about 6pm, two hours before listed closing and many flavors were already sold out for the day. The empanadas I was able to get had been sitting out for a while and unfortunately were a bit soggy :( But the flavors are really good. I visited the Aurora location. Excellent customer service I must say. Maria's story is wonderful and kudos to her, for working hard and living the American dream some don't believe in. However, I found the empanadas to be in the ok scale, not wonderful. I love to travel and I love eating empanadas, from whichever country style. Maria's are not bad, but did not impress me either. The presentation and labeling is wonderful, but the filling was not. My humble opinion: I think they are trying to hard with these fancy combinations and flavors that are not a good representation of her background. The owner of this place is a coffee freak! He has the Rolls Royce Phantom IV of espresso machines on display in the restaurant and his main coffee machine is just as cool. Seeking out empanadas in my travels ad being told that CO has good, authentic hispanic I came across this while searching trusty old Yelp. The empanadas are already made and stored in a case that keeps them warm. Perfect eating temp. We tried the caprese, argentina beef and chicken. I can't decide if I like the chicken or beef better. They were both really good and the meat was very tender. $3.19/empanada was a good deal. 2 is enough for a meal for me. You do have to pay 0.39 per sauce, which isn't terrible considering the empanadas are so reasonable but most places include a sauce. After eating, I noticed this awesome little hand washing machine that you can wash up with before eating. I had already gone in the bathroom to wash my hands but thought this was a nice touch (if I knew it was there). We got some to go and I got veggie and spinach with béchamel, which I Have not tried yet. A reasonably priced, quick meal if you are seeking out cheap eats and/or empanadas when in Denver! read more

I love the empanadas here so much, we actually ended up coming back for seconds within a matter of hours! I am a meat lover, and love all sorts of meats in my food. But you have to try the mushroom empanada, it's extremely flavorful and I would argue it's more delicious than the majority of the meat empanadas. Maria Empanada is always tasty food. I've been here several times and never had a bad empanada. Honestly I'm surprised that empanadas haven't taken the US by storm. Handheld pockets of delicious, this is the perfect go to snack or meal if you eat several. Every time I come in here the place is packed. The dough is more bread like where I have had some empanadas that are flakier dough almost like puff pastry. It's entirely a personal preference as both options are delicious. The filings are mostly a mush, like they had almost been blended. Spinach was obviously from frozen spinach. The "special" veggie was a blend and it was so muddled I could only identify some carrots because of the color.
