While following another Sacramento social page, I stumbled onto Marias Paella & Empanadas. In one of the videos she was stirring up a huge pot of paella at the farmer's market. I listened carefully to her and was impressed by her enthusiasm. Weeks later I finally made my way by her shop. Not a lot of parking and normal for parts of Sacramento. A busy little section of town that could also be good for business. I was greeted kindly and professionally once inside. Small amounts of seating inside and a few out front. I didn't expect all the variety of empanadas they made. They were a bit smaller than I expected, but each of them were super delicioso! Now I want to make another trip back to the farmers market in Sac to pair it up with the paella. Totally looking forward to my next visit. read more

Came here as I was craving paella. It's been over a year since I had some for the first time in Barcelona. I had pretty high hopes that it would be pretty close to what I have had in Spain unfortunately that was not the case. I will say that the taste was not too bad. I would give it a 7/10. However, it was the texture of the rice. It was too mushy. The empanada was pretty good. The service was quick. It was a pretty small place, so I don't recommend coming here as a group- it's more of a take and go. May come here again and if I do will make sure to update. read more

Maria's Paella was featured at the Sacramento Kings game and it was a must try. They featured their shrimp and chicken paella, and 3 different empanadas. I tried the paella ($12) and a chicken empanada ($8). I enjoyed both. The paella was flavored well and served with a slice of lemon . The empanada was also very good, with plenty of filling and the pastry wrap was the perfect texture. The chicken filling was a little on the spicy side with a lot of flavor. Although Maria's looks large from outside it is actually very tiny on the inside as most of the area is kitchen space. There is 2 small tables inside a large picnic table outside. It's a good idea to order online as it can get busy in a hurry and there is limited space to wait around. I tried the paella and a beef empanada for lunch. The paella was stick to your ribs comfort food. The lemon wedge is needed to add some acid but we felt the paella was under seasoned. The star of Maria's is a sauce that seemed like a hybrid chile verde/chimichurri. This sauce made the paella and empanadas pop. We ordered several types of empanadas but haven't gotten a chance to eat them yet. If you like paella come on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday as those are the only days it is served at the brick and mortar. Maria's is a great spot to grab some handmade Spanish food. read more

This place brings life to the neighborhood. I have seen Maria at the farmers market for years and have been wanting to try the amazing smelling dishes. The place looks super cute. When you walk in it's literally just a counter and a couple tables but I think it would be uncomfortable to sit because people are standing there to order. This place is definitely best for to go orders I would say. There is a window where you can see the kitchen which is pretty cool. Kinda funky layout but if getting it to go it doesn't matter. On to the important part the food! It was so flavorful! I had the paella and Al pastor empeñada. The paella was chicken and shrimp cooked to perfection and full of flavor. The empeñada was great too! What a great find in a busy street. Ive passed her stall in Midtown Farmers market, but happy to see storefront! Empanada fillings were generous & flavorful-- particularly the chicken mole ( tho a bit of extra mole sauce on side as a salsa would be lovely. The chicken was plain, but salsa spiced it up. My husband was critical of empanada dough-/ not flakey enough for him I hope theyre able to get space next door for indoor dining. Their cafe chairs were cute & comfortable. SO GOOD!! First of all such a cool stand! The signs were beautiful and the giant paella pans were so cool! She made it right there in front of you, so you could see how fresh it was! The flavors were so good and it was PACKED full of protein. The added lemon squeezed on top added the perfect amount of zest to the whole thing. The empanada I had was delish too. Was expecting it to be super rich since I got pork belly but it wasn't too bad! And only $5! I got a half size of the paella for $15 which also isn't too bad considering the amount of shrimp and chicken it had. The chef was super friendly and made sure everyone in line had their paella ready to go so even though the line was long it moved very fast. This place opened in September, but I only recently discovered it. I am extremely glad that I did, because it is delicious. I don't think any other place in Sacramento is focusing on empanadas and paeallas, so they offer a unique menu that stands apart from the countless taco and burrito options. Delicious food. Empanadas to die for... so many flavors to try. Delicious sauce for empanadas. I tried 4 different kinds: beef, Al pastor, chicharrones and chicken. I ate them all without taking pictures. I will be back to try all the flavors. Sweet option is the brownie dulce de leche. Veggie option-Mushrooms spinach and vegan cheese. All the empanadas are stamped on the front so you can identify each of the different types. Each empanada is filled with bold flavors ratio of meat and dough is perfectly balanced. I also ordered the Chicken and Shrimp paella. Every bite was filled with equal amount of protein and rice. The tastiest bites I've had the pleasure of sampling in a while! I found out about Maria's on Instagram, and came here for a day date. We got the following empanadas: -Al pastor: delicious with small chunks of pineapple -Beef: ground beef filling similar to a picadillo -Chicharrone: our favorite; this savory pork filling reminded me of a chile verde They came with 2 tantalizing salsas, green and red, which added a bright pop of flavor. Went there for lunch when I was in Sac from the Bay Area for a Union Meeting. I pre ordered online and my food was cooked and prepared perfectly at pick up time! My favorite was the Paella! I saw a post for this place on Instagram and had no idea that this empanada shop is the famous one I keep hearing about from the Sacramento farmer's market. Those empanadas were delicious! Ordering was simple because the menu is small and to the point. You walk in, order at the counter, and then wait outside for your food. There is a big window where you can look into a kitchen where the food is being prepped, and it was cool to see the food being prepped back in the kitchen. It added a mice homemade and welcoming ambiance to the experience. The empanadas were fresh, juicy, and full of flavor. There were a few chairs and tables outside the paella where I waited for my order, and the owner, Maria herself, came over and chatted with me. She thanked me for visiting and was so excited about how quickly her shop has taken off. I loved this place and if I wasn't so hungry I would have taken photos. Oh darn. I have had paella in Madrid in and around Plaza Mayor, Barcelona, various cities in California and Aioli Restaurant down the street. So I believe I have a decent idea of what it should taste like. I had high expectations when I saw her setup. Large authentic paella pans heated by propane gas. It looked delicious, the line was long. Shrimp chicken paella. The color was authentic. Rice mushy, it had a strong flavor maybe salt, I did not taste the saffron. It was $23 so overpriced for the quality I was served. I will try it again hopefully I could give better rating. Maria makes a little bit of EVERYTHING and she has mastered it ALL. I've had the paella, empanadas, and clam chowder! The paella, and clam chowder, seem to have protein in EVERY BITE. Usually I find myself spooning up the perfect bite when I eat making sure I get a little bit of everything and Maria has done all that dirty work for us. Her food is packed with flavor and she does not skimp on any of the good stuff! I have had every empanada: mushroom, chicken, beef, Al pastor, chorizo..... and I can say the same about those. Each one more delicious than the next! The empanadas are all freshly baked so I don't feel like I've eaten super heavy fried food. Paired with the home made CHIMESCO SAUCE OMG!!!! chimichurri + romesco = heaven. You absolutely have to go try her out at the farmers market Saturday mornings in midtown. Not to mention on top of all that Maria is incredibly kind, friendly, and charismatic. Maria's Paella is absolutely delicious !! If you have never had Paella this is the place to try it and if you have had paella this is the place to have it. Hands down best Paella I have had in a long time and I'm so glad it's in Sacramento. Maria herself is amazing as well. While attending Yelp's Celebrating Earth Month at the Midtown Farmer's Market, I walked by Maria's Paella and saw a sign for empanadas. I got in line for empanadas, but as the line moved up, I noticed a huge plate of really good looking paella. Despite initially coming for the empanadas, I decided I had to try the paella as I kept watching them mix and serve the paella to customers ahead of me. I ended up ordering a half order of the shrimp and chicken paella ($12) and a beef empanada ($5). The shrimp and chicken paella was SO delicious! I loved all the flavors in the rice, and the shrimp and chicken in the paella. The shrimp was peeled up to the tail so it was easy to eat. I really enjoyed the dish and so did everyone eating around me. I had not had paella in decades so this was a real treat. The beef empanada was really good as well. I loved the chimichuri dipping sauce that came with it as it elevated the flavors of the empanada. They offer beef, chicken, and mushroom empanadas and they stamp each empanada with a label so you can easily tell which one is which. All of the food was SO delicious! Maria's Paella is one of the best food vendors at the Midtown Farmer's Market! The paella and empanadas are delicious and flavorful. The prices were $20 for a full order of paella, $12 for a half order of paella, and $5 per empanada. Definitely stop by and give them a try. read more

I am always a fan of a new ethnic food place in Sacramento (especially paella for which Sacramento is lacking). The tent setup is nice with a catchy logo and the service is friendly, including offering samples. Perhaps I tried the food with too high an initial expectation from their Instagram, but I and the others in the group found the paella . The paella itself was a bit on the saltier side and didn't have the depth of flavor I had with other exceptional paellas. The chicken was a tad dry and a main issue was the shrimp came with the head and shell still on (my recommendation would be to have it peeled). The issue with the unpeeled shrimp is that the paella comes in a container and is hard to eat. The market where the Paella tent usually is located is more of a walk around type venue (with no seating) where you would use one hand to hold the container and the other to eat (difficult there to use two hands such as in peeling shrimp). I also felt the prices were a bit on the higher side. read more
