Okay you have to sum up the type of person you are before you go to a Mexican restaurant. Are you there for food, drinks or both? We came for both; I'm here for drinks she's here for food. I'm coming to a Mexican restaurant to have tequila. I want good tequila. The happy hour includes peligroso tequila at a discount which is a great tequila. I was happy the taste and the quantity. There was a lot of bar food on the happy hour menu and if you want the ceviche is the standout. If you're into chicken the chicken wings was good too the hot sauce is either Frank's or Louisiana (yum) and the customer service was exceptional. read more

2 stars for having the doors open and decent seating. The strawberry margi was syrup and alcohol (ordered blended) Veggie enchilada was brutal with 7-11 nacho cheese. Carne asada was a boiled (I think) piece of thicker meat, typically use to thin sliced chard meat. Service wasn't great either, if it would have been I would have at least given then an additional star for trying... They do have 4 tv's if you are into sports with your meal. The fajitas and guacamole were good. A little overpriced but good. Waitress didn't come back to refill drinks and came back to table AFTER we finished eating to ask us if everything was ok. This is my first try and I'll never be back. The restaurant is disappointing of some service and hospitality, if it wasn't for the elder waitress my experience would be bad, but she made it alright. I had to ask for water refill as they did not refill my cup, yet went around other tables and filled the visitors tables without hesitation. The food is decent, presentation Boring. My family and I came here for dinner and drinks while visiting Kauai (from California) last week. We had great service and good Mexican food. We tried the tamales, burritos, enchiladas and chile relleno. They even brought out a special desert and sang to my boyfriend for his birthday. Everything was fresh and tasted homemade. I'm not sure why this restaurant has such poor reviews. I could see the service being slow on a packed night, but aside from that it seems to be a good restaurant. After having lived on the Mexico border for several years, my first thought was that this place seemed pretty authentic. Formica tabletops, bad lighting, bright walls, 15 kinds of tequila. It was just like home! I had the carne asada tacos, and they were fantastic - the best I've had since leaving my little border town. I did think it was rather pricey for Mexican food, but as compared to the other restaurants in Kapaa, it was definitely on the cheaper side. I expect tourist towns to be more expensive anyway. Paying for refills, I came to learn, is the norm for Kapaa. I would give this 5 stars, but the service was a bit slow, especially considering we were one of only 5 or so tables in the restaurant. read more

We stopped in here in between breakfast and lunch and discovered we could have both. Kids had the breakfast buffet bar and we ordered off the menu. The atmosphere is standard Mexican but has great open windows and the breeze felt great. The food was ok. The service was quick and good. Would I do it again? A group of eight of us came here in May 2015. The drinks were fantastic, but the food left a little bit to be desired. Today I'm over here for work and booked a late flight back to Honolulu, after a couple of work meetings in Kapa'a. I am just getting in at the end of happy hour just got two of the $3/each happy hour fish tacos. They are delicious! Battered. Really tasty batter, tasty tacos overall. I also have chips and salsa which I would suggest should be less than $5.50, but the salsa is tasty. Attentive server, really nice guy. Well, to start my review San Diego does not have authentic mexican food sir. Sit down. Now to the establishment of mariachis. It was great. I guess it helps when you're also fluent in spanish. Friendly staff. Great service. We did wait about 20-30 minutes for our food, BUT when it was delivered to our table it's was legit. All ingredients were fresh and true. Everything was good. We recently had lunch here as a group of 9 and we received excellent service. The food was priced well and very tasty, and fresh. I had a grilled veg taco salad which I would have again, and they salsa and guac where fresh and flavourful. great for large groups and families and very accommodating to different dietary restrictions. read more

Beware - chips and salsa evidently do not come with your order of drinks - we had to pay $5.50 for a small-ish basket of chips (no refills, which was ok for the 2 of us). Salsa seemed fresh and was tasty, although not spicy at all. Requested hot sauce, and the server seemed confused - he said ok, but we never got any. Chips were very dry and mealy - did not seem fresh; possibly packaged. We tried the fish tacos (happy hour menu) and they were very good. Happy hour drinks and snacks offer good choices and are pretty reasonable (Island-reasonable, that is). You might give it a try, but if you're from border states, read other reviews and take your chances. Staff was wonderful - except for never getting the hot sauce (hey, it's Island time). I would give this place negative stars but that isn't possible. It is a very cute, quaint little spot but don't let that fool you. The service is terrible, we basically had to beg for waters and my husband only got one beer (doesn't beer make you money?). We waited for 20 minutes to place our order. When we ran out of salsa we weren't offered any more. The server didn't refill my water once and when we finally did get our food it was... well absolutely awful. My burrito was watery and flavorless, it had celery with shredded chicken? My husband's carne asada looked like a steak you would purchase at McDonald's. After an afternoon filled with paddle boarding, we remembered seeing a sign for "best happy hour" at a local Mexican restaurant. Why not get a few cheap margaritas on happy hour...well, I wouldn't suggest this place. The more expensive "Make me Happy" margarita tastes watered down and definitely not worth the extra $3. The waiter even explained that the only difference between the house marg and the other one was that the Make Me Happy was made with fresh limes. We ended up just ordering nachos and cheese dip. So we stopped at Mariachi and got a pitcher, every dip they had and chips. Then proceeded to eat like a bunch of savages. I took my wife and daughters to this place because we craved Mexican food. What an expensive mistake! The service was horrible. The waiter made us feel as if we were bothering him by coming in. We had to repeatedly ask for chips and salsa. I can kind of understand slow service if the place was busy but there were two waiters and two bus girls serving 5 tables. When our waiter took our order he kept getting it wring. Then when the food came out, he still got it wrong! How difficult it to NOT put sour cream on the plate? We ask for corn tortillas and got flour. The best part is I ordered Dos Equis draft. The waiter brought out the beer in a warm mug! Does he go to the extra step of putting the mug in hot water? Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere for better food and decent service. Kauai is too nice and beautiful for this type of place to stay in business. read more
