We have been going to Mario's regularly over the last 4 years. Today, we ordered a cheeseburger medium rare and a prosciutto pizza with thin crust, crispy with the prosciutto cooked with the pizza. The pizza came out with regular crust and the prosciutto just placed on top of it and the burger came out well done. We told the staff and they gave us a $4 dollar discount. Did Mario's for a quick takeout tonight. We got chicken parm with a penne side and the meatball app. The chicken parm itself had a homemade quality that was quite nostalgic. It came with two cutlets placed sort of on top of one another so that only one had cheese on it. The sauce on the penne was average, but not in a bad way-- more in a reliable way. The meatballs were moist but had an odd, fine texture to them that I did not adore. My young son loved them though. This was a chicken balsamic red roasted pepper with mozzarella sandwich. What a complete disappointment for almost $15. I could have made four chicken sandwiches for that. I got all bread and very little chicken and hardly any red roasted peppers. Now I wouldn't mind so much, maybe somebody in the kitchen was not doing their job properly that day, but I went back another day and I had the same experience. More bread than actual chicken, mozzarella and roasted peppers. For that price I don't want to be paying for bread. So I called Mario's and I spoke to one of the managers on duty, she said she would convey my disapproval to the owner, that was last month, I'm yet to hear from anyone. I can't any more. They have been going downhill for quite some time but I was giving some grace (much credit to my husband). The audacity to charge $3.00 for half pizza toppings to only get the equivalent of mouse droppings of sausage. Ok, looked past that. I only order a plain now because I have all my toppings at home and so much better, fresh AND cheaper. Just got a pizza on Sunday. Crust so thin I can see daylight and burnt to high heaven to the point it actually stunk. The frozen pizza from the Dollar Store is SO MUCH BETTER (yeah...saying something right?) No bread came with my mussels. They used to always provide some bread with a sauce dish to sop up the sauce (my opinion, best part). Chicken Romano...not even close. Over and out. I've seen Mario's for a couple of years and never tried it. One day I was walking by wanting a slice and the smell of the delectable pizza caught my nose. I went in and wasn't able to get a slice, so I thought me and my fiancé are gonna give it a try. This place has been a Clifton institution for many years. My family loves coming here for dinner. Me, not so much. The food is just ok. There are dozens of hole in the wall pizza places in the area that prepare far better tasting food. We walked in on a Sunday it was empty , no one at the front desk and one girl was just standing there staring at us without asking if we needed a table. Someone finally came from the back and sat us. We then waited another ten minutes and we're about to get up to leave when finally a waitress noticed us and rushed over . Her name was Cynthia and she apologized stating no one let her know we had come in so I cannot fault her plus she was sweet and got us our food quickly . If it weren't for her we were going to leave. Went to Mario's for probably the hundredth time, and once again, this place ROCKS! We had pizza, eggplant parm, gnocchi, rigatoni bolognese, and chicken parm, and all were excellent. But the real star tonight was our waiter Dominic. He was, by far, the most attentive waiter I've experienced ANYWHERE in years. He was super friendly, kept us informed of the status of our dishes, and was always available, even though he was running the entire dining room by himself. Picked up pizza from here on Easter Sunday, most other pizzerias were closed so they definitely got points for being open. It's a little out of the way so we don't usually order from here but gave it a shot today. Ordered two pies (1 pie with onions, peppers, and mushrooms and 1 pie with extra cheese and 1/2 pepperoni and 1/2 meatballs and onions) and an order of French fries. Was about a 20 minute wait so not bad. We took the pizza home and there was an error. Instead of 1/2 meatballs and onions it was mushrooms and onions. Since my friend and I don't eat mushrooms on pizza we called and they told us to keep that pie and they would make us another. They hostess was apologetic and very accommodating. We went back picked up the pie and the hostess even told us that the chef said he made an error. Very honest and we were very happy with the result. The hostess was very polite and was gracious. Definite points for that. The pizza was delicious. The fries were thin and crispy, very good for pizzeria French fries. Service was below satisfactory, the lady was practically standing over us watching us eat and the second we were done with something she'd snatch the plate up. But other than that one lady all the other staff have always been very nice. The food is AMAZING in my opinion, I've tried almost every calamari place in the area and Mario's is the best!! My family and I have been eaten at Mario Restaurant and Pizza since the mid-70s, which mean we have been a patron of Mario for over 50 years. Until tonight, I generally have been happy. Tonight, I'm not! My husband and I initially went there for a couple slices of pizza and perhaps some calamari. After checking out their menu, we decided to order the "Bar Pizza, Emma", and two small plates; Spaghetti and meatballs and Penne Vodka with Chicken. I also mentioned to our waiter, Dominic that I want the "small plates" and he said okay. We ate half of the pizza, as well as half of our pasta dishes. I didn't even look and gave Dominic my credit card and mt husband left a generous tips. When I got out to our car, I discovered we were charged not for the small plates but full prices. I turned around to speak to Dominic and in turn spoke with the cashier. She coldly said the transaction has been closed and that she can't correct the transaction and that "they" would comp me $5 for the error the next time we are there. I can't believe she has the audesty to suggested that. They charged me more than that $5! When I came home and re-read the menu and my receipt, I realized there's no chicken in my pasta either. I called Mario's and spoke with the same cashier. She is even more rude this time around. If I were her superior, she would mot have had a job. The food dishes are noy great but decent. Most of the staff are generally friendly, pleasant and attentive. Tonight, they not only loss a couple patrons but a family of patrons. read more
