When I went there I ordered a 11.99 plate of chorizo and I got like literally two pieces of chorizo that is a full blown rip off to not add more and better yet they had my food and then took it back to the kitchen since supposedly they mixed up my order with someone else's and almost gave my food away I definitely wouldn't recommend this place they rip people off charge too high for too little portion food and don't have organized ways to give the correct food out . read more

Well hey there. I'm late to reviewing this place. We went to Mario's on a whim, because we're whimsy and that's what whimsy people do. Immediately it was apparent that the prices were spectacular, because a bean and cheese burrito was like a dollar. So I ordered two. They were acceptably average. The salsas though were in complete disrepair. There were a lot of choices, but they were all messy with flies everywhere and growths that looked like bacterial syphilis in petri dishes. The salsas were neither bad nor good. One of the green ones was above average, but the others were nothing, although it may be due to the mixing of ingredients from other salsas. I didn't mind my meal, so I'd probably give it a 4 under most scenarios despite the conditions, but the service wasn't that friendly and my friend didn't like her meal at all, so three stars it is. read more

From customer service, to orders being mixed up, having to wait for food that was called in 30 plus minutes ahead and not to mention have even had issues with portion to be honest. He swears by the carne asada burrito, but being the enchilada lover that I am, I had to try them out here. Meh, they were pretty average. Not bad at all, but nothing special. It wasn't that busy, and not only was our order messed up, but I was shorted about $5.00 in change. Wow! This place is awesome. We were driving between Sacramento and Bakersfield and needed a place to eat that wasn't chain fast food, but wasn't going to take forever. Downtown Merced was to sterile, so we wandered a bit and found this little joint. Yes!!! This is what we were looking for. The heavily pierced girl behind the counter was very nice and recommended enchiladas to my wife. My wife is a huge enchilada aficionado, and can be difficult to please. As it worked out, she said these enchiladas--one chicken, one cheese--were great. So far, so good. I had the garlic shrimp plate, which was outstanding. Totally tasty. Plenty of garlicky goodness. It would have been easier to eat if the shrimp were tail-free, but they weren't. I was willing to work with it, given that it's so great. If you're looking for a nice, clean place to eat, go elsewhere. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food that is absolutely delicious, Mario's Taco Shop is your place. read more

My wife loves this place. Her family does to...they been going for years and years and will probably continue going. But my experience the 2 times i went was horrible. Undercooked meat in steak burrito and chicken quesadilla. Soggy nachos after only 5 min drive home. At leaast i saw a show on my visit. I was approached by homeless man in parking lot asking me for money and he wouldnt leave me alone. He even followed me into restaurant. Went in today never had a problem in 20 years till now. I ordered 3 plates of food to go when I got home half way through my nachos I found a hair. I ca5and spoke to the manager and he told me to return it to get a refund. When I got there one of the cooks was laughing at me saying in spanish not to sell me food anymore. I answered him back as he assumed I didnt speak spanish. I said no worries I wont return. When I got to my car I was mad and called the manager they left me on hold for 10 minutes and then hung up on me. I called back and spoke to the manager and told him what happened. He asked the cooks who did it and they said they didnt know. It could have been the manager for all I know. He said he would take care of it. I told him not to worry that I wouldn't be returning and that after 20 years what kind of customer service was that? If I could give 0 stars I would. Super unsanitary people aren't even wearing mask inside and doing dine in with the small space they have. No sanitizer in sight. The workers are touching money and everything with no gloves or sanitizing between transactions and touching their faces. My friend and I ordered carne asada fries and 2 enchiladas. My friend asked for no beans on his, and there were beans. The carne asada was extremely chewy and there were burnt pieces mixed in as well. The enchiladas looked like an oil spill soaked in grease and stuffed with what looked like canned ground beef. The overall taste was mediocre at best. My stomach started hurting before I could even finish the food. You're better off buying microwavable food and doing it yourself. read more

Asked for menudo, she asked do I want the corn, so when I got home, there was no corn a little bit of tripe, and over 3/4 of just soup, for the price they charge it is ridiculous, not to mention I usually order a side of rice and beans, and twice when I got home, they forgot to add them even though it wad paid for, making me go all the way back getting my food colder than when I picked it up the first time. read more

My dad hardly could choke his burrito down and he has hardly eaten in 4 days. He ordered a carne asada burrito and the whole thing was basically lettuce. The ceviche tostada WAS JUST HORRID. The taquitos tasted like they were frozen and they were so empty you could literally blow air straight through it. Mario's taco shop has really gone down the shitter. There's no air conditioning inside. The guy working behind the counter displayed poor customer service. My grilled chicken nachos looked appetizing, but when I bit into it, the chicken was cold. Not to mention the chicken looked as if was some type of leftovers and not even grilled at all. When I asked for a refund it was given. As I went back to the eating area outside, I came to find out my daughters carne asada quesadilla was undercooked. So I went back in the shop to ask for a refund, but instead the guy behind argued that it was cooked when it clearly was pink . He refused to give me a refund and treated me disrespectfully. If you love Mexican, I'd say if your ever in Merced, CA you have to try Mario's. I had the carne asada enchiladas with rice. Fresh salsa, no chips- which can be a deal breaker. But, There Carne Asada was cooked perfectly. They did have nachos and carne asada fries on the menu. I will be trying those the next time I visit beautiful Merced, CA. read more

I stopped in to eat a late lunch about 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, I ordered the Chili Verde Combo. I was not impressed with the flavor of the chili verde, it was bland with little flavor at all. However, the rice, beans and tortillas were excellent, and the service and friendliness of the staff helped bring this review up to 3-stars. I am all for supporting small businesses. Something has changed in the past couple months. Today guacamole tasted like avocado mixed with expired pico de gallo. The camarones a la diabla, the sauce tastes different as if it was cooked too long (shade of red looked darker). Al pastor was charred and parts good - so far only rolled chicken tacos were good. I came here because I had a crazy nacho craving. I ordered the carne asada nachos with jalapeños. There was hardly any nacho cheese on my nachos and the jalepenos were rancid. When I called the store to complain they wouldnt even answer the phone. I would not recommend this place. read more

Mario's taco shop, personally, is one of my favorites in the Merced area. They offer great food and prices are reasonable. I usually order the Carne Asada Tacos, the Carne Asada Plate (if i'm feeling a bit healthier), or their Carne Asada Chips; they also have prety good rolled Tacos. Anyways, the service is pretty good, the food is great, the location is kinda shady, but overall this place is pretty authentic and delicious. Since this place is located right off the freeway, i find myself eating at this place if it's still open after a long drive back to UCM from LA. I stumbled on this taco shop while driving around looking for breakfast. I ordered two burritos (chorizo and egg, bacon and egg) and briefly wondered if it would be enough for both me and my husband. I didn't need to worry. Their breakfast burritos are huge and delicious. Great price, too, especially after coming from San Francisco where everything is overpriced. I'm not sure we'll ever make it back through Merced, CA, but if we do we'll definitely make a point to go back to Mario's. read more
