Flank steak dish
Ethan S.

Overall, the food was excellent -- honestly, a solid 10/10. Every dish was tasty, well-seasoned, cooked properly, and came out hot. The sides were just as good, and I really had no complaints about the food, which is almost suspiciously impressive. The atmosphere was also very nice. The restaurant had an open, airy feel with beautiful window views, good lighting, and plenty of cool art throughout. The bathroom was clean, which is always appreciated, and the automatic toilets were a nice touch -- because apparently even the bathroom was trying harder than the service. The Oak Creek Nut Brown beer on tap was delicious and definitely worth mentioning and nearly worked on me like a PDE-5. Service, however, was where things started to fall off. I'd give it around a 5/10, though we'll be generous and call that "average." We saw our waiter maybe three or four times during the entire visit, and getting water refills required multiple requests. Not the end of the world, but definitely noticeable. Overall, the food and ambiance were great, but the service kept the experience from matching the quality of the kitchen. Food: 10/10. Atmosphere: very nice. Service: present in spirit, occasionally in person.

I was visiting Sedona as a tourist and had heard so many great things about this restaurant, so I was excited to celebrate my birthday here. I even joined the waitlist in hopes of getting a table. When we arrived, the gentleman at the front was kind, welcoming, and genuinely tried to help us. Unfortunately, that was the only positive part of our experience. We were seated at what felt like the worst table in the restaurant--right next to the bar and the service station/entrance, with constant traffic around us. I had mentioned that we were celebrating my birthday, but there was no effort to accommodate us or make the occasion feel special. What disappointed me the most was the hostess's attitude. She was extremely rude throughout the interaction. When I politely asked for her name, she refused to tell me, which only made the experience more frustrating. I understand that restaurants can be busy, and I don't expect special treatment. However, I do expect to be treated with courtesy and respect. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Based on my experience, I would not return, and I cannot recommend this restaurant to others. I hope management takes guest service more seriously, because hospitality should be just as important as the food.

Anniversary treat

It's tough not to give Mariposa less than 5 stars, but we had a few disappointments last night. First of all, Ciara was great. She was personable, knowledgeable and provided great service. We had the shrimp cocktail (fabulous) and Caesar salad (perfect) which both came out in a timely manner. Then we waited, and waited, and waited....and waited, 40 minutes for our main course. Because it's a busy restaurant and we were enjoying our wine and the beautiful views, we weren't too upset with the wait. However, when the food arrived, our steaks were not cooked as we ordered. We ordered medium rare, and what we received was medium to medium well. Our mushrooms and potatoes were decadent. Because of the long wait for the food, and plans we had for after dinner, we did not send the steaks back, but we did let our server know they were not up to standards. We've eaten at Mariposa several times and have always had perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth filets in the past. For dessert, we got the chocolate cake with salted caramel gelato (heavy but delightful) and we were treated to a light anniversary dessert that was very good. Overall things were good, but not the great meal we expected from our past experiences and for the price.

Mariposa Latin Grill is definitely one of those places where the experience is about more than just the food. I'd give the food around a 3/5, it was good, but honestly didn't quite live up to the expectations. The dishes were enjoyable, but nothing really stood out! That said, the space and ambiance are absolutely stunning. We went during sunset, and the views alone made the visit worth it. Service and the overall vibe added to the experience, and I can understand why this is such a popular spot in Sedona. I'd come back for the views, cocktails, and ambiance.

Our meal was phenomenal from the tapas to the entree'... Chef Lisa Dahl is truly a culinary genius! The flavors are intentional and every ingredient exists in perfect harmony just like the panoramic views of the surrounding red rocks! We started our experience with the sea scallops and burrata salad and transitioned to the chimichurri ribeye and chile relleno. Also, the cocktails are exquisite and really enhanced the palate with notes of cherry and mint. Service was exceptional; the staff was on point and the presentation was flawless. Overall, it's fine dining at its best... Worth every penny...

Beautiful scenery around the restaurant. The pull pork tacos were yummy. The ceviche is ok, the little sweet red pepper is great. The steak is great. Excellent service.

A must visit when in Sedona! Located in a tucked off location away from the strip malls it has the most beautiful view of the mountains and has plenty of seating all around the restaurant and patio. We were able to secure a late night reservation but this place is pretty popular so I would definitely book in advance so you can get the sunset view while having dinner. They have a parking lot so it's easy to get to. The service was impeccable! So personable and considerate of the timing and pace of the dishes. Our group enjoys dining family style so they were on it making sure we had clean plates and extra plates for sharing as well. We ordered (wish I had more photos and videos) - Ribeye cooked medium rare with chimmichurri but was a little tough in texture not the greatest cut of meat but still was tolerable. - Lobster mashed potatoes had a citrusy aftertaste likely from lemon but loved it to cut through the buttery taste of the lobster and mashed potatoes - Mushroom Empanadas were flakey and full of flavor - Yucca Fries 10/10 so crispy and fluffy at the same time I loved the Parmesan on top and the dipping sauce - Roasted Cauliflower was cooked perfectly loved the dipping - Prickly Pear Cheesecake was not too sweet and loved the crust

Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill We arrived as a group of 7 and with high expectations for this place. Maybe because of my expectations, the whole experience at the end was a little disappointing. We were greeted by an older lady at the front, picking her ear and trying to get whatever was underneath her fingernails after her ear picking. I got the impression that she must feel comfortable working there. We were led to outside patio, and the scenic view was beautiful and captivating. I think my neck is sore from crane necking and checking out the views throughout the whole dining experience. The cocktails were nice, but not memorable. The appetizers were good and they were all memorable, the empanadas, shrimp ceviche, and yuca fries. As for the entree, I ordered el gaucho with chorizo link and I was disappointed. The quality of the skirt steak was good, and that was about it. The steak was cut messy (uneven thickness and sizes) and flavor of everything else on the plate wasn't impressive. I thought that care wasn't there, the entrees felt rushed. I would recommend this place to others because it's worth experiencing for yourself at least once. Lunch time, if you want to enjoy the view while the sun is still up. Dinner time, if you care more about the food (my friends and I only had lunch here, but I am assuming dinner is better because our server's response was, we only serve this and that for dinner and not for lunch. She said it proudly too). Try it and let me know of your experience. Be careful driving at night time. As for myself, I will remember Mariposa as a restaurant with a nice scenic view. I hope that other people will have a better experience than I did.

Yuca Fries
Allen T.

We had a very memorable meal at Mariposa - the location has amazing views and the food and service were terrific. I started off with order of yuca fries and grilled octopus which were both fantastic - the octopus in particular was very tender with a nice char. My main was the Vaquero which was a skirt steak with chimichurri with potatoes and black beans. The skirt steak had a good beefy flavor cooked medium rare, with a good char and was nicely accompanied with the chimichurri. We finished off with a slice of key lime pie, which was an an excellent rendition of my favorite kind of pie. I would be happy to visit again!

Nirvana Veggie Chile Rellano
Rick H.

This is not only a great place to dine, but the surrounding views of the Sedona Red Rock is beautiful. We ate in the main dinning room. But, probably should have been on the patio. More to see. I had the Nirvana Veggie. A delicious poblano stuffed with some of the most tasteful ingredients. Every bite, to the last, was fantastic. I had the cole slaw as my side. Very very good. My wife had the Fungi Burger. What set it apart from other mushroom burgers was the spread, the bun, and the perfectly cooked 1/2 pound burger. I had a bite and it was great. Brandon was our friendly and attentive server. Love this place.

RIBEYE
Rowel D.

After hearing so much about Mariposa, we finally got a reservation after waiting more than a month, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The Australian lamb chops were cooked perfectly--tender, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The ribeye was rich and juicy, and the Vaquero was equally delicious. We also shared the filet beef and chef's Elote empanadas, both of which were excellent. The yuca fries were crispy on the outside and soft inside, and the triple queso mac and cheese was a big hit with the kids. The food, presentation, and atmosphere all came together for a memorable dining experience. Every dish was well executed, and we left very satisfied. We can definitely see why it's one of the hardest reservations to get in Sedona. We'll gladly come back the next time we're in town.

Taco & burger
Ankita K.

Booked two weeks ahead for a March birthday lunch. The views of the red rocks are breathtaking and easily the highlight of the experience. The service and ambiance were excellent. We tried the fish tacos and mushroom burger; the food was good, though the scenery is the real draw. Note that the lunch menu is more limited--I missed out on the lamb chops since they are dinner-only. Great spot for the atmosphere!

We have reservations this week for the patio. It's supposed to be hot. Do they have anything to cool the patio area down?

Yes. They had some misters and fans overhead.

Is the patio too hot during the day in August? (Trying to decide between indoor or patio reservation based on heat)

💯 way to hot before 6pm

Are there heaters on the patio? We're going to be there in a couple of weeks. Expected to be in the 40s during dinner.

They have the patio well-appointed for the weather.

The Open table reservation system is not working with any of my cards. How can we make a reservation?

You can call their number and leave a voicemail with your request.

Are gluten free options available?

YES! I do not remember off hand if there was a dedicated menu. However, I do remember them being both extremely knowledgeable and accommodating both times we have been there. There were many gluten free options or slight modifications to still make…

What is the dress code for men?

Resort to dressy casual. I'd recommend a collared shirt and slacks with closed toed shoes and socks.

Are reservations required?

Yes but call! Large groups have to make one through a sales person and she was unavailable when we showed up. Manager didn't care and made us wait forever.

Is your bar open in the afternoon for drinks and tapas?

Yes

Do they take amex credit cards?

Not sure if they accept AMEX. I'm sure if you call or email the restaurant they'd let you know.

Is there a different number to call. I keep getting the voice automated system or do I have to wait till 4 when they open to speak to someone?

All i can say is me too and the concierge line is non responsive too...

Is there any way if I made a bar reservation that I could upgrade to a standard seating?

You must call the restaurant directly as if they can accommodate they surely will. I have had similar issues in the past and the gal who handles calls and reservations is an amazingly pleasant and accommodating individual.…

Are they still serving the tomahawk? I sure hope so my hubby was looking forward to it!

It wasn’t on the menu that we saw on October 23rd.

Is there a Corkage fee?

It's not byob

Is there any way to reserve 20 days in advance if open table shows it's booked? Can I call? When is the covid limited capacity going to end?

It's a bit or miss with this. This place is beyond fabulous and books up way in advance. You can try calling but it sometimes takes hours to get to someone. Not sure when they are going to full capacity. Never hurts to keep logging in and seeing if…

Are jeans and nice t-shirts okay or do we need something dressier? I'm trying to pack light and only bring hiking boots and one pair of tennis shoes on our trip!!

No tank tops, sports branded wear, thongs, flip flops, hats. Website doesn't mention jeans and t-shirts, but don't expect to be seated in the dining room. More likely the patio if they seat you at all. So - something dressier, definitely. This is,…

Hi. In town for one night and open table isn't showing any available reservations... is walk in allowed? Or any other ideas - can I call the restaurant directly?

Call! Their patio is open for first come first serve if opwn

Planning a trip for spring break here and wanted to set up a romantic dinner for my love should I make a reservation or can we just stroll on in?

Definitely make a reservation, and ask for a table with a nice view.

Mariposa or Elote?

We personally love Mariposa and highly recommend it.

Are dogs allowed on any of the patios during lunch?

I hope not!

I hear the sunset is amazing there. For costs sake, would lunch view be just as good or should we splurge at dinner?

I expected the menu pricing to be astronomical and a huge splurge and I know it depends on perspective but i was really surprised at how affordable it was -- nothing was egregiously overpriced. another idea is to share some apps and drinks while…

The bartender at least was very sweet and kept adding to it for me. They had been out of several other drink options unfortunately and this was one of the few non alcoholic options available. The Chilean sea bass dish was flaky on the outside, but it was not fully cooked in the very middle. They did refire it for me at least when I realized. The side was this veggie pea mix, but no starch of any sort. The only thing that allowed it to feel complete was their complimentary bread. That was nice and warm, and had a unique texture, and is very filling. It even came with dips, and I especially liked the olive oil with a sweet type of chili paste. I appreciated they gave me extra bread to finish off my dips. The meal had enough strong points that I thought maybe another night they would step it up after recalibrating from the busy day. Unfortunately the second time I went the food really did not hit the mark at all. The horchata they now had in stock, but it was one of the worst I have had. It just tasted like sweet milk. The ceviche mixto had been recommended to me the first visit, and I wanted something light, so I thought perfect! It was the blandest ceviche. Somehow it had no flavor and some of the fish in there did not taste fresh. The frozen beet decoration was visually interesting, but added nothing to the flavor. I didn't say anything because honestly I was tired, and was like I already had them refire my fish the first time and adjust my drink a bunch...I just was tired and didn't want to become a pain. I at least sat next to a really nice solo diner and had a fun chat. They have indoor and outdoor seating, and they have a small parking lot that doesn't have a fee to park. The restaurant itself has a lot of character, it full of textures and colors, had a cute little fountain outside. It just feels homey and welcoming. The menu...is hella pricey for a tamale. I mean even with inflation these days I could get a tamale at most spots where I live for like half the price. I just told myself it's Sedona just except it lol so I went wild and got their extra special tamale with lots of topping to make it a more complete meal. I chose the chicken mole for my filling. I also got their dairy free horchata. First thing the horchata was delicious! Creamy, great texture, not to sweet, seasoned just right. Extra points for being dairy free as milk is not my bodies friend. The tamale however was a major let down. I was so close to just sending it back, but was on a time crunch and starving. The masa was so salty. The mole sauce was barely existent and had no complexity or flavor really. I didn't taste the chocolate or the Chile . Just blah. The toppings and horchata helped make it possible to consume despite the saltiness. So overpriced salty tamale gets 2 stars, ambiance 5, and horchata 5, which is why this place gets a three stars overall. I wanted to love this spot so bad, and maybe it was a bad day, or the wrong thing to get...but their name is literally tamaliza. Their tamale should have rocked my world.

We ended up sitting outside, and I loved that the patio was covered and equipped with heaters, which made it cozy even with the weather acting up a bit. It was lightly sprinkling, and we did get a few drops here and there, but honestly, it didn't take away from the experience. Now let's talk about the food--absolutely delicious. The deviled eggs were generously stuffed and beautifully presented, which made them just as enjoyable to look at as they were to eat. We shared the filet mignon, served with mushroom risotto, and wow... it was completely out of this world. Perfectly cooked, rich, and full of flavor. We paired it with the honey garlic carrots, and they were the perfect balance of sweet and savory--definitely a standout side. I also ordered a smoked blueberry sour cocktail, and it was so good--unique, refreshing, and well-crafted. Service was solid and consistent throughout the meal. Nothing over-the-top, but everything came out smoothly and as expected. Overall, this spot really delivered--from the ambiance to the flavor-packed dishes. I'd absolutely come back again.

We didn't have reservations and had already been told at 3 different places that the wait time would be well over an hour. We put our names down at a place and I kept searching on yelp for something close by. This came up -- no wait. Blood Orange Mezcalita -- perfectly balanced. Super drinkable with a smoky mezcal that I really appreciated. I ordered the Carne Adovada -- Santa Fe style smoked pork shoulder. It was absolutely delicious and a very generous portion. More than 1/2 went back to the resort with us for breakfast the next day! My son ordered a burger and holy moly was it perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. What do you expect when it's fresh ground filet mignon? Hubby ordered Salmon Mignon -- a salmon medallion cooked medium rare. Absolutely divine. So grateful that this place wasn't hopping so we could easily get a table -- but also wondering why. The food was excellent and they have a remarkable wine selection too. Very elegantly appointed restaurant-- it would do well to dress up, but we saw people in shorts and flip flops equally comfortable. So go as you wish.
