Large very Marisco style restaurant. Seated upon arrival. Lidia was our server she was great. Restroom was clean. Food was plenty. The sea bass ceviche tostada is probably enough to have 3-4 of their tostadas. We got two orders and as a party of 3 it was more than enough. The bass was good. But not very ceviche. I ordered the Palma sushi and didn't like it at all. I don't recommend. I wanted to try something new and they have a wide selection of funky "Mexican" sushi and I did not like it at all the rice was so sticky not steamed. My mother had the aguachiles and frankly I've had better. But they weren't bad. My friend had the quesadilla, 2 Asada tacos, and sea bass ceviche and he seemed to enjoy his food. He had. I have never understood how the Coachella Valley could have Mexicans from every state in Mexico, each one more diverse than the last, each one remembering the sweet, savory flavors and smells from South of the Border...and yet every Mexican restaurant here tastes the same, and offers the same menu. By and large, I have cut Mexican food from my diet because the majority of the offerings here are lackluster and bland. I never understood how we as a community let this happen. How is it we don't ask for more? Demand more? Mexico has an exciting, vibrant culinary tradition that is as complex and has a depth of flavor as any great world cuisine; when did we let it go the way of standard resort fare? So it is when I went to El Capitan that I was hooked. This, THIS is the flavor I was looking for, the explosiveness, this was food that is truly alive (in flavor, you don't eat anything that still has a heartbeat). It's a bit hard to find a good Mexican style seafood place here in desert. Today, I figured to give El Capitan a shot. First, this isn't your fish and chips or fish tacos for, mmm, light complected north americanos. No offense. I happen to have very good north americano friends. This seafood place has all the pizazz and spice that can only come from south of the border. So come with an open mind. This place is not in Palm Springs or anywhere fancy. This is Coachella. East side. And don't be a afraid, you'll be safe. It's located in a strip mall. Nothing fancy on the outside, but inside, it's perfect. The deco, just like somewhere in Mexico by the beach. The menu is a work of art. They have everything here. I was overwhelmed by the selection of seafood. First, I started with a Negra Chavela. It was good. Then, I ordered the Molcajete Chakaloso. Oh my! Shrimp, octopus, sea snail and other goodness. DELISH! Bon ordered a fish taco and tostada de camaron. This was one huge camaron plate. Then, to make it even more enjoyable, they have a band playing all kinds of mexican music. They were jamming away by the bar. Accordion and all. Only con, tostada de camaron, was a bit chewy for Bon's palate. But hey, my teeth are like razors, I'll rip through anything. I'll definitely come back and try the other options. There's parking, staff is pretty good, friendly. Then again, I was here at 3:30 pm, not a big lunch or dinner rush. But please, get in your car and just come out and try it. The food is good, pretty basic, same as every other restaurant in Coachella. One thing I don't like about this place is the over priced food. It is ridiculous pricey compared to other places near by that have better service same amount of serving portions and prices. The sushi there is not good at all since it's not fresh to begin with. When your raw sushi roll gets to you the fish is warm and almost seems to be cooked because of all the heat going on in the kitchen form cooking hot meals. Best way to get sushi is by going to an actual sushi restaurant. read more

Alright..There was a hair in my agua chile verde, and there was little to no lime in the shrimp which made it take a long time to cure. Somebody in my party got shrimp tacos and the shrimp tasted and smelled bad.. The server took the hair and gave us new tacos. read more

Don't waste your time at this place. Upon entering the restaurant the hostess asked if I wanted a booth and I said yes. The hostess said the wait time for a booth was 15 minutes. 45 minutes later we're still waiting for a table and a family walks in and the hostess sits them in the next available booth before us. I asked the hostess if she forgot about me and my party and she replied " no tables" and looked away. Never been treated like this ever before at any restaurant. We left and ended up going to a restaurant called Santa Fe. It was awesome, service was excellent and the food was amazing. So disappointed with El Capitan. We have been there with different friends more than 7 times now in the past month and the food is always consistently prepared and so flavorful! This rating is based off my first experience, I walked in it was super loud. Very awkward loud the host couldn't even hear us. The food was pretty good I got a "sushi" roll called the Pancho roll and it was really different and good so that's the best part. The Chavelas are really great as well. The server Ivan was amazing! Sitting his own tables since the host was busy. He got everything for our table asap. Although the food took forever to come out it was worth it. The reason I gave this place 1 star is because my trip to the restroom consisted of being Locked out for a good 10 minutes and they were only letting certain guys in, the worker even asked me if there's guys in there and I answered yes. so finally I got in and there was a group of guys huddled over a baggie and keys like savage animals over a carcass. Raise the security or something. It's annoying to be waiting outside the restroom because some guys want to get high in the baño. Didn't use the restroom just sat down. I went there at the beginning of my lunch break and waited over 45 mins inside when I ordered 25 mins before I got there to just pick up. Total time 1 hour and 15 mins and all for the dish of marinated shrimp on top of rice and a bit of salad. I never knew shrimp and rice took an hour to make. As I was waiting all I heard was the conversation of the chefs . The ingredients they use aren't the best quality, yet their prices reflect that. All of of our five entrées arrived at different times. Mondays this is the place to be... 2 for 1 ceviche. I pay about 16 dollars for 4 bowls of fish and shrimp. You can get about 20 tostadas out of that. Its fresh and tastes great. My mondays are forever planned. Amazing deal and taste read more
