Everyone that is giving this place doesn't understand the type of restaurant this is. If you want a different style Mexican food or an unauthentic place - go somewhere else. Just like they say in their description - this is Nayarit style food. Nayarit is a state on the Pacific Ocean in Mexico specializing in seafood. Spicy seafood. If you don't like spicy food.. go somewhere else. Traditionally, Mexican people like to have a good time and that includes Banda music. Banda music is loud, but very authentic of how it would be if you were dining in Mexico. If that's not what you're looking for, or your going to complain when it's loud..go somewhere else. Now that I've addressed some of the ridiculous expectations in some of these reviews, I can get to the real review. FOOD: I can get to the food. This place is INCREDIBLE. Their aguachiles are the best I've had north of the border, and that's including when I lived in Los Angeles for two years. Their various types of ceviche are also incredulous. The one complaint I've had that is food related is one time I did get some ceviche that was quite "fishy". If you want tacos, get the tacos gobernador - SO SO GOOD! This is also a relatively "safe" dish for people that don't want to branch very far out of their comfort zone. It's basically a spicy shrimp quesadilla. If you don't like seafood, their assortment of non seafood dishes are also great! ATMOSPHERE: Music: This place is all about having fun. They have a Banda band every Sunday that is usually pretty good. I believe they start at 12 or 1pm. Beware: this Banda music is loud! If that's going to bother you, then don't go here. I lucked out on one Sunday night and they had a ten person Banda band that they brought in from Las Vegas. I wish they would advertise more when they are doing something special like that. When they do not have a Banda band playing they use a good selection of Mexican music and play the music videos on the huge array of tvs they have Amenities: they have a ton of tvs, but only four directly in the middle of the restaurant facing all directions for sports. If you want to watch a soccer game, football game, basketball, etc. They will accommodate your request to change the channel, at least they always have for me. Makes for a fun place Wait staff: the waitresses here are incredibly friendly, fun, and professional. The only difficulty you may run into if you speak no Spanish is a language barrier. I've seen it happen, but they will just go get another waitress that speaks better English. DRINKS: for those of you who drink - this place has the best micheladas in the area, hands down. They also serve a variety of other drinks, as well. Complaints: I do wish they would advertise their special events and live music more so I can know when to go. Being white, I did experience racism (a first in my life) at las islitas one time. I was told on a Sunday that they were having a private event and closed to thee public. You could clearly tell this was not the case by looking inside. But, just so I didn't jump to conclusion I had my Mexican friend swing by ten minutes later, and, sure enough, they welcomed him in. I don't think this is a reflection on the restaurant as whole because I've been here well over 50 times and that's the only time I experienced it. So I blame the host for this one. Other than that t one occurrence, I have no other complaints. Bottom line - if you're looking for the best authentic Mexican seafood in town, and to have a great time, as well - go to this place immediately! read more

Great place to have Mariscos!! (Seafood) It's a bit pricy but you get what you pay for, the portions are pretty big so I don't mind the price. They also have live music which can make it a bit loud but if you like that type of ambiance it's just for you! The server we got was amazing! She was always checking on us and making sure we had everything we needed. AND I have FINALLY found THE PLACE for MICHELADAS! And they have my favorite beer! I have lived in Utah for 2 years going on 3 and I haven't found a place that had such good micheladas! Well I have finally found the place! And they are only $6 bucks!!!!! What a steal! I was kind of looking for affordable Mexican food, because I like Mexican food. This food was plain old not good and I wouldn't call it Mexican in particular. The menu was in Spanish and gave an impression of Mexicaness. The music was pretty good (loud enough and I didn't understand it). Big menu. My shrimp was overcooked and still had the poopoos in them. They were served on a diced cucumber, onion, tomatoe salad (?) w/hot sauce. I ordered steak tacos to go. They weren't awful but they use those nardy steak bits that look like greasy steak crumbs. I mistakenly ordered a drink that ended up being tomato juice, hot sauce and a beer, with some kind of chili citrus pepper all along the rim of the glass. Maybe they were having a bad day, but my experience was very bad. The alleged chili verde was red and tasted nothing like chili verde. The burrito was tasteless. This place is an absolute must when in Salt Lake/West Valley City! Everything here is great! I usually get the fried shrimp tacos and they are covered in lettuce, tomatoes and onions with a little mayo. The wife had a mixed tostada with shrimp, crab and octopus! They also took forever to bring our food and the waitress didn't even come by to tell us about the wait, they also don't check on you to see if you need anything or how the food is. And the food, I ordered enchiladas and the sauce was so sour I'm pretty sure it came from a can. The beans had no flavor and neither did the rice. It was like eating mush. I got a total of 6 regular size shrimp - the beans were bland and the rice was mushy the tomato stew had good flavor but - NOT at all worth $19.00. Total tab for 2 people - No appetizer or dessert $46.00 not including tip. The place had flys and the service was very low energy overall it was not a good first impression. DO NOT COME HERE. The service is horrible (unless you're a man). The waitress never came to see how wee were doing or If we needed anything. They never even came to let us know our food was going to take a while. It took almost 30 minutes to get the 2 dished we ordered. The beans were basically colored water and the sauce on the enchiladas was sour and obviously from a can. The music was playing so loud we couldn't even hear ourselves think and even after I asked them to turn it down it was still loud and giving me a headache. if i could give this place zero stars i would. I called ahead to make a reservation for my fathers birthday dinner but I really wish I hadn't. My total was 239.23$ and the tip in trx was 22.13 which we left in cash and we were charged 22.13 on the card as well!! Our waitress Maria Martinez was horrible and completely rude. We got there and it took the waitress about 15 to 20 minutes to finally bring us some chips and salsa and this is only because we went up to the counter and asked. There was balloons on every table so my father asked how come our table did not have any balloons she explained why rolled her eyes and left came back with balloons put them right in front of my fathers face almost hitting him with the balloons. A few minutes later she came and asked us what we would like to drink my father asked what drinks they had since we had no menu she put the menu on the table and told him "look on the menu that's what we have" when she finally came with the drinks she dropped three of the cokes and giggled about it thankfully they were the glass cokes and were still closed. Alcoholic beverages were ordered and she did NOT ID them my husband and brother are 21+ but why would you not ID someone ordering alcohol!? About 25 minutes later she finally came and took our order again that was only because we had to go to the counter again and ask! When she came with our food three molcajetes were ordered and she had them all wrong, when we brought it to her attention she said to just "switch them around" When she came out with my plate which was the fajitas it took her about 10 minutes to bring out the rice and beans it comes with. She got my drink wrong and when I told her it was wrong she rolled her eyes. We really had a horrible experience especially with our waitress as well but regardless of her behavior we still left a tip in cash and they had the audacity to charge another tip on the card!!! Yes, you have all the classic seafood dishes on the menu and yes some of the portions are big but the food is missing 'sason' that classic Mexican flavor. Everything I tried was very bland. I ordered cocted de camarones with octopus. I ended up adding more ketchup, lime and salt just to make it taste better but it still tasted watered down. The meat and cheese in the tacos we ordered were also bland thought the cheese was tasty. The restaurant has live music, which would have been a nice touch if it wasn't so loud. It was not at all friendly when we asked about dishes the waitress acted like we were wasting her time . The funniest part was when we ordered chips and guacamole and they give you a ton of guacamole with 6 yes 6 chip pieces not even whole chips! (2) Look at the faces of your patrons while the live bands play. No one is smiling... why? Because their ears actually hurt. (3) You are in violation of Salt Lake County's Noise Ordinance (4) Reasonable volume would allow the musician's talent to show. The 2nd band (with 14 players) was talented, although you couldn't hear them for the screeching ampliphiers. Do your customers a favor and post the times when the LOUD bands won't be playing. Upon arrival to the restaurant we were not greated although we had made a lot of eye contact with the employees. And when we were seated we were not officially told that us where we were going to be seated, it was more of trying to read body language of the employees. Our waiter gave a lot of attitude towards us. It may be she was having a bad day but at least greet and don't give faces to your customers. She kept giving attitude and getting our orders wrong. The menus were wet with and orange drink from the previous people who had the menu. There is little attention to the customers. We definitely will not be coming back to this islitas we will be going to the other one further in west valley. Which has a lot better customer service. read more

I have heard from friends that the molcajete and micheladas were really good. I didn't order the molcajete, but my husband got the michelada. He said it was ok. I ordered the shrimp tacos. They were good, they were fried and crispy, had a good flavor to them, but there was a weird after taste, I couldn't put my finger on it. Husband ordered the aguachiles, he said it was ok, just wished there was more shrimp and not so much veggies.The service was ok, waitress wasn't very attentive. Overall, it was just ok.
