I got a tip about Mariscos Nayarit, a newer Mexican seafood spot off East W.T. Harris and Albemarle, and I'm glad I checked it out. I was invited in by Pedro, the manager, and while my meal was hosted, these thoughts are my own. Staff was well-compensated and the food delivered. Inside is bright and full of ocean-themed murals, greenery, and upbeat Latin music. The menu is huge, with photos for every item, which made ordering easy without needing to Google anything. I started with chips, salsa, and queso. All solid. The Ribeye Brasas was next: steak and zarandeado shrimp with grilled veggies and a surprisingly great baked potato. The inside was mashed, creamy, and loaded with bacon and sour cream. The steak was seared perfectly and the shrimp had that smoky open-fire flavor. They also brought out a wild dish called the "Tendedero" -- steak, corn on the cob, shrimp clipped to a clothesline, and a seafood stew served in a flaming cast iron bowl with clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari, and more. It was dramatic, flavorful, and a lot of fun. I don't drink, but they showed me their over-the-top cocktails. One came in a glowing hippo bowl with a rubber duck. Another was served in a purse. There was also a piña colada so tall it needed a lifeguard. I passed them to other guests who were more than happy to enjoy them. If you miss the flavor of spring break in Cancun, this is your vibe. Servers may speak limited English, so bring a translator app. Think of it like a real-life Duolingo session. The reward is great seafood. Fun atmosphere, kind staff, and big portions. Definitely one of my new favorite full-service Mexican restaurants in Charlotte. I'll be back. Follow me for more local food spots: instagram.com/charlottefoodieguy

Listen! I have been searching high and low for a place that has basa fish and this place not only…read morehas basa but damn near every other fish you can think of. Including my other favorite, red snapper. The menu has a ton of options. I kept it light and just ordered the basa sandwich and a side of fried okra. Love me some okra! The basa sandwich did not disappoint! They give 3 nice size pieces of fish. Perfectly fried. Not greasy. It was hard to tell what all I could have on my sandwich since that wasn't visible on the menu but the owner insisted I could build it however I want. So I did mustard, lettuce, tomato, cheese on a bun. I got my tarter sauce & hot sauce on the side. She served my sandwich w/o the cheese due to it not over powering thr flavor. I was too hungry to care so I ate it anyway. I can eat it with out without but since she didn't charge me for the cheese, I didn't complain. It was so good I never sat it back down once I picked it up. Sandwich in one had, my free hand grabbing the fried okra bites. The fried okra was also fried perfectly but could have used a little more flavor. Sometimes it's tricky with okra bc too much seasoning will make it unbearable. I'd rather it have less seasoning than too much. Would order it again! I also grabbed a lemon pound cake. Not sure it if was actually lemon and couldn't say anything while there since I ate it once I got home. The size of the piece was huge but was more on the dry side and didn't taste lemony. Could have been traditional pound cake. They have a lunch special for $10 I saw on the street sign while leaving. I'm definitely coming back! Damn near once a month if I can. But will for sure be a regular. It's located in a plaza so there's plenty of parking!

But this place has it down 100% 6 different choices of oysters to sample. Each one amazing. Don't like oysters? No problem they have any other options, all amazingly prepared and presented. Huge shout out to our server, Nas, who was on the ball all night. Thanks for a great evening! We started with a dozen sweet, plump oysters with very little brine. Exactly our style. Clean, fresh, and delicious. That flavor bomb I mentioned earlier? The pimento cheese fritters. This was seriously a mouth orgasm, yeah I said it. Crispy, spicy crust with warm pimento cheese oozing out of the center. Add the house made buttermilk dip and it's pure heaven. Everything else was top notch as well. Flavorful and tender calamari, freshly made clam chowder, seafood tagliatelle, and a wagyu burger that absolutely melts in your mouth with two smashed patties. One thing was better than the other. This place is definitely a staple anytime we're out in Charlotte.

We had reservations but it wasn't overly busy so I don't think they were necessary for that day and time but I would definitely recommend on busier times. I love the fact that this is more of a tapas style restaurant so you can order and taste a ton of options. Plates are generally around $14-22 per plate and they have enough for three or four (tapas style). We started with crab dip and oysters on the half shell (raw). The crab dip was rich and creamy and served with buttered crusty, buttered bread. The oysters were amazing too but a little nuance about these: they are listed by region (e.g. West Coast, Mid-Atlantic, etc.) and not listed as they type of oyster. Oysters vary greatly within a single region so I would encourage you to ask what specific oysters they serve for each region (they will look it up and tell you) to make sure you know what you are getting. We also ordered the calamari, small salad (unlisted option for the salad listed on the menu) and poke bowl to share. We went in hungry and probably ordered too much because this was all to start off. Everything was really good and worth ordering. For my "entree" or ordered the trout which comes with lentils and broccolini. This dish was fantastic and highly recommended. The trout was perfectly cooked and delicious. Our waitress, Tiffany, was amazing and did a great job. Additionally, this is the perfect spot for a "dinner and a show" since it is right beside the Knight theater. Parking is easily accessible at the Green Garage right across the street.

This restaurant is very nicely designed. It's visually appealing with tables indoors, a bar area, and an outside dining area. The hostess and my server were professional and extremely nice and made my dining experience very pleasant. The reason I am giving three stars instead of four or more comes down to value. Seafood is expensive, I get that. But I don't know that there's much value to be had here. Portion sizes are small relative to what you're paying for. And in my opinion, while the freshness and the quality of the seafood may be there, the flavor is not. I have no doubt that the quality of the seafood here is good. But I did not enjoy anything I ordered. I wasn't put off by the food, but I wish I had wanted to savor each bit. I ordered the cajun grilled oysters and the miso sablefish. I thought both were too salty and despite paying over $40 for the meal, I left still a bit hungry.
