I've often popped in here for lunch. The food is always good: well seasoned and spiced. Service is attentive and quick. It's a quiet a clean venue. A great option for Laurelhurst neighbors or Seattle Children's families. I especially recommend lunch specials: an entree, side, rice, and garden salad (priced $16-20). The Thai iced teas / coffee are also great additions to any meal. My personal favorites are the Phad Thai, Panang Curry and the Coriander Chicken. read more

We came to Marlai at about 6 PM on Friday night. We each got some Singha beer and enjoyed their coconut shrimp, Mongolian Beef and Lemongrass Chicken with a side of white rice. These dishes all complemented one another very well :) the Mongolian beef is a classic, and I love the flavors of the lemon grass chicken because no bite is the same, but each is just as pleasant and lovely as the last. Marlai has been one of our go to spots for years, because we love their outstanding flavors and service. They have been consistently good over the years. This is for take out. I work across the street and my company paid for my lunch since it was my birthday. Decides to order food for the staff too. Ordering was quick and easy. Pick up was easy as well. I ordered the Bangkok noodle because it's basically phad kee Mao and the dr ordered phad Thai since it was one of her favorite dish there. Serving is fairly large and the noodles were delicious and full of flavor. I had request for mine to be 5* but i couldn't tell if it was spiced haha. Could have been spicier if it was. Overall a good lunch and I'm certain I'll be ordering from here again. read more

Stopped in here for lunch and could tell this place is a classic that has been around for some time! It has an old-school eatery feel to it, which was comforting and nostalgic, like places I used to go to with my dad as a kid. Older interior with no frills but delicious food. Our server helped me navigate what was gluten-free on their lunch menu. Usually, Pad Thai is, but here it isn't. The panang curry was though, and I enjoyed that with chicken. It was really tasty and spiced just right for me. If we're all being honest here, I ate every last bit of it. It's definitely a solid spot for lunch with generous portions for the cost. read more

Their menu is confusing. If you order the green bean " entree" for lunch it comes with rice and tofu. But if you order it for dinner they give you plain green beans for $20, no rice or tofu. Green beans at least tasted good. They ask "do you want silverware?" Don't say yes because if you do they charge your credit card $2 for a pack of plastic silverware. They don't tell you either If you order a tofu dish (cashew tofu), it doesn't come with rice on the side. They charge you for that. Pad Thai is bland and noodles come stuck together in one blob. read more

I feel robbed. Spent over 100 bucks on pick up lunch yesterday and still feel upset about how disappointing and gross the food was. Not really sure what happened to this place because I had a coworker order from here for a birthday lunch a few years back and it was pretty good. Yesterday's pick up was inedible. -The noodles in both our noodle dishes were completely flavorless and so overcooked it was almost complete mush. -The red curry was average but barely seasoned and a bit watery. -The "spicy" chicken fried rice was anything but spicy and had zero flavor and a weird sour odor - I took one bite and spit it out. It was so foul I wonder if they gave us something spoiled from the day before. -the eggplant was also mushy and had zero flavor. All around the food was flavorless and overcooked and tasted old. Worse than the worst cafeteria food. Not worth a single cent and what a waste and a disgrace to food in general. read more

We ate here and sampled a few of their entrees. Parking is available in a small lot across the restaurant. Tofu soup with mushroom , spinach, and clear noodles was a little too salty with fish sauce or soy sauce. Not recommended. Chicken wings 5pcs was hot off the fryer with sweet chili sauce and carrot parsley garnish. It was hot but not flavorful. Pork Gra Pow had too much fish sauce for seasoning, no chili, only bell pepper. Ground chicken salad has a lime flavor with fish sauce, no chili, nice lettuce, kafir leaf, lemon grass slice. This was the best tasting of entrees we ordered. Pad Thai chicken had overcooked rice noodles, too much sugar for my taste, and unlike other pad Thai I have eaten. Decor looked okay and clean. Service is a little slow as it looked like takeaway is what keeps them going. Service for takeout moving briskly. No real ambiance in eating in, I think we will order take out next time. We came here an hour before closing but it ended up they were closing a half hour early. We didn't want to be rude and keep them open later so we decided to leave. The hostess/server was soooooo sweet and insisted it was okay for us to stay! So we did and we quickly ordered our food. Some items were fried so she wasn't sure if they would still be available. We were going to change our order but she checked with the kitchen and said it was okay! We ordered chicken wings, phad thai and a squid dish with chili sauce. The wings were really tasty and perfectly fried! Phad thai was good but the squid dish was just okay. The restaurant is very nice inside. You could definitely go there on a date or just for fun too. Service again was sooooo nice!! They let us stay without hesitation and we never felt rushed. We will definitely stop by again in the future to try more dishes! read more

Marlai has always been a staple in my husband's family when it comes to Thai food. Marlai gave me my Thai training wheels. The first time I tried Thai food was about a year ago, and was Pad Thai from Marlai. Previously I would just order their Chicken Satay, and rice. (Boring I know!) Their chicken satay is really good though. You get good sized skewers with your order. I have since ventured to other things, BETTER things! Yellow curry being my favorite go-to! The yellow curry here by itself is ok. However, when sauced over the Pad Thai, it is much better. Perhaps if my in-laws were adventurous with spiciness, I might enjoy it more. The yellow curry has giant potatoes, chicken and a tomato (which was a weird addition, and one I've never seen with yellow curry). I love yellow curry, but have had much better (despite being spicy or not) at other Thai restaurants. Marlai's yellow curry is pretty bland to be honest. Which is why it's better over the Pad Thai, it gives some blended flavors which makes the dish! Although we normally do take out, I have eaten inside on a few occasions. The "dining-in" service is a little on the slow side; but all the people are really nice. Although Marlai is not my favorite Thai spot, it does the trick and feels my Thai needs. read more

I just left Dr. Hohl's office across the street and craving... idk, something! lalala - "Ohh, thai." First off, I forgot what i ordered but it DID have spinach and peanut sauce---which, in my books, practically makes ANYTHING taste better (if it wasn't already good enough). =D I had take-out while I waited for my bus back to work. The place is pretty nice and rather foo-foo; even squatting tables... Nice. They had you wait at the bar table in back facing the cool open air kitchen and provided glass of water while waiting. Clearly Marlai - Fine Thai Cuisine has a successful formula to remain in the restaurant business for over two decades. And somehow this has escaped my radar screen until today for lunch 3/23/15! I arrived a few minutes ahead of my two former colleagues. I was pleasantly greeted and immediately seated. I really liked the enormous windows which lets in a lot of natural light. The décor is what I'd call upscale Thai, but the pinkish paint hues and scuffed up chairs kind of made it a bit dated. I'm assuming there must be live music on some occasions since I was seated proximate to a baby grand piano. Service from start to finish was efficient and unobtrusive. Plates brought to/fro, water glasses kindly refilled automatically. Judging from the folks in the dining room, it's perfect for ladies who lunch, groups, and families perhaps with appointments at the nearby medical/dental building or Children's Medical Center. It has the advantage of not being too frenetic in contrast to University Village All three of our entrees started with a complimentary house salad. However, it contained very, very, very pale iceberg bits with scant julienned carrot and a drizzled dressing I couldn't quite figure out. I left behind my iceberg core dregs. It would have been better to use mixed baby greens or even just a tiny bowl of flavorful congee or broth to prime the palate. Something ginger-infused would have been welcomed on such a rainy, grey kind of spring day. The three entrees ($10 each) ordered were served piping hot direct from the kitchen line and eye-pleasing with its presentation, a token bright orchid sitting on a bed of julienned carrots. Coriander Chicken with Spring Rolls - tender chicken sautéed with coriander sauce with crispy vegetable spring rolls and steamed jasmine rice Bangkok Noodles (Pad Kee Mao) - fresh wide noodles stir fried with chicken and assorted vegetables in a red curry sauce Garlic Pork - pork tenderloin sautéed with cracked peppercorns and fresh minced garlic in a light soy sauce, served with fresh cucumber slices and steamed jasmine rice What's interesting is that this is the first Thai restaurant that the wait person did not ask how many stars of heat wished for each entrée. No condiments on the table to adjust accordingly, just brightly colored daisies in petite vases. The Garlic Pork entrée was nicely presented and tasty, but a bit too sweet which is not what I'd expect from pepper and garlic. The cucumber slices were a bit off (mushy inner core, tough outer portion), plus a bit thick without a knife. A thinner setting on the mandolin would solve that using fresh, crisp cucumbers. Sadly, I left those behind on my plate, like my earlier pale iceberg core dregs. I've never visited Thailand, but my tastes align closer to generous entrees served at Little Uncle, Pop Pop, Pestle Rock, and Mai Thaiku. Ruined my date night with my son with their bad food and service and high price. We ordered Tom Yum Goong Sour Shrimp Soup and Rama Rong Song, the chicken with spinach and peanut sauce was edible but the shrimp soup was not. It had a few shrimps in sour broth with not much flavor at all. The service was so horrible that we were afraid of the waiter. He seemed to be mad at us that we were dining in and threw the menu at our table and threw it back at an empty table next to us when he took it back from us. Each dish did not have any rice or noodle in them so we had to order them separately. I literally felt being robbed. We used to come here when we lived near this restaurant until 5 years ago and we used to like their food but things have changed. That's so sad. The satay was well cooked and had a nice peanut sauce. However the pad Thai was a little underspiced and didn't have the usual egg and other goodies so was a little bland. Came here on a Saturday for lunch. It was around 2pm and the place was pretty empty. The only reason we actually came here was because Jak's and Varlamo's were closed. They were still offering their lunch specials so that's what I went with. I had the Tom Yum soup which came with a side of white rice and a salad. The salad was a bit skimpy as was the soup portion. The flavor was also lacking as I tend to like my stuff spicier and bolder. The broth was practically clear. There was a decent amount of shrimp, however. The service was good and the decor typical of an Asian place. They let me plug in my phone to charge which is the only reason this review got up to 3 stars. read more

We have been coming here for 7 years at least several times per month. The food is tasty, well prepared and prices are affordable. The service is always friendly. During the many times we have come here they have never had a day where the food or the service did not match their standard. Food was delicious and was very fresh even getting takeout. I got Pad Thai 3/5 star spicy and it was really satisfying, although less spicy than I was expecting. I don't live near the restaurant but my friend who does told me the restaurant tends to be empty but has been around for 2 decades! (switched owners). I had the Lard Nah and my friend had the Panang Curry. The Lard Nah was NOT good - not very flavorful except for an overwhelming amount of minced garlic in the gravy sauce. The Panang Curry on the other hand was tasty! We tried their thai iced tea as well which hit the spot but was way too sweet. The wait staff aren't very attentive but they were nice in not shooing us out when conversation with my friend got drawn out past their closing time. Verdict: Would not recommend coming here and would not order the Lard Nah ever again. read more

I've been coming her off and on for a few years and I've always been impressed. Most recently we stopped in just before 9pm. They close up at 9:30, so they might not have been the most excited to see us, but we still got pretty good, if very prompt, service. We always start with their crab rangoon wantons. These are by far the best around, they're nice and crispy and have the proper ratio of filling for the size of the wanton. I think they had already shut down their fryer for the night, but they didn't complain to get it re-filled with oil to make a fresh batch for us. This time I had their panang curry. I had it with rice, and actually preferred it better without. The flavor is very layered and complex, and so subtle that even a bit of rice masked the excellent spices. Usually at most places I use the rice as a curry delivery system, but found that this time it's better to go straight in with the fork, or even spoon, to get every last drop of that amazing flavor. My wife almost always gets their swimming rama with tofu. This, too, is the best peanut sauce around. So many places just taste like they've taken peanut butter and warmed it up a bit, but here they've added a few different spices so that it isn't just straight peanut flavor that you get. Instead there is a very subtle hint of spice, as well as some other flavor. They cook the tofu perfectly and it comes out on a large bed of spinach. It seems like the price has gone up a little bit, but you still get a very large serving for what you pay. It's a bit out of the way to head north of UW, but has always been well worth the trip in my opinion. read more
