Kristie and her son Ben are running an exceptionally charming little country café here in Marshall, one of the most delightful mountain towns you'll ever visit. The courtyard in back is a fabulous area for outdoor dining, nestled into the side of a mountain. Our food was consistently excellent and the service was prompt. Yesterday (Sunday - busier), we were served by very charming young Gudu, a tall slender young woman just out of college, who will be returning to Virginia soon. That will be a loss for the restaurant, but - if the restaurant is not too slammed when you are there - you might want to ask her about her plans for back home, which are quite interesting. Perhaps the biggest treat for me on both days that I visited was Kristie's five-year-old granddaughter Paisley. There is a little stage at the back of the courtyard and Paisley loves to sing and dance back there. She absolutely could not be cuter and sweeter. She loves the attention and applause of the diners - and yesterday accepted several tips for her college fund. It is clear that Paisley's stepdad Ben and her grandmother dote on her and totally support her burgeoning creativity. As a result, she is solid enough to creatively amuse herself out back for hours, without a lot of parenting going on - especially at busy times for the restaurant, when Ben and Kristie are both working quite hard. (Kristie asks that - no matter how much you want to remember little Paisley - you do it with your mind only and not photograph her. My experience is that lots of parents and grandparents have this wish about their young ones.) There is another, perhaps hipper coffee shop right across the street - with all the modern niceties like an app to do your online order. But that place does not have as good outdoor seating, nor does it have the down-home charm of this place. Price's at the Main St. Café are quite reasonable; I've got a hunch they are steeper across the street. When I have to choose between the two, I consistently opt for Kristie and Ben and Paisley. Overall, Marshal's Main St. Café is one of my favorite finds from the last year of roaming the North country of western North Appalachia.

I had high hopes for a nice quick lunch based on other reviews. Alas, that was not my experience. First the good - my egg salad sandwich was very good. The macaroni and cheese sides for the kids were some delicious obviously homemade stuff. Our server was very sweet and friendly but our food took at least thirty minutes (if not closer to forty) to come out (in an almost empty restaurant). I was very aware of the time as we had to be at a rafting outpost and had given us at least a full hour to dine. Everything else was pretty average and my child's hotdog was inedible - the hotdog itself was chewy/ "rubber like" and the bun had been grilled to a blackened hard mass. I could have and probably should have said something but a server should also pick up on the fact that the food they brought can't or isn't being eaten. As another reviewer has noted the problem lies quite possibly with lack of staff, in the kitchen, up front or both.

All our breakfasts were great! Coffee was wonderful, as was the hot chocolate with whipped cream. Hubby had a burrito bowl, #3 daughter had the Greek omelette with biscuit snd gravy, snd I had the veggie omelette. Yum! Outdoor seating with a fireplace.

Just a lovely diner style place in Marshall. It's got the typical food items on the menu. We had breakfast and it's what you expect with a bit more such as their homemade jams. I had the Western Omelet with biscuit and gravy. The gravy is different than I've ever had but good. Plenty of fixings in the omelet. The French Toast and pancakes were very good!

Quaint little place and the only thing open after a horseback ride one Saturday in June (most places closed during COVID-19 Crisis). It was their first day open and had outdoor patio seating with plenty of social distance. The owner was serving and had great kitchen help - the food was so good. Fresh salads, great black bean burger and quesadilla was yummy. They were trying hard to adapt and were working hard to accommodate those who ventured out, and they did so with a great attitude.

I was in Hot Springs for a couple of days on section hike of the Appalachian Trail. I stopped in to…read moreeat 3 different meals there over the course of three days. Day 1: Lunch. Another hiker and I decided to stop in as we got to town and have a late lunch. It had been a couple of days since we'd had town food and we were tired and hungry. The first thing I noticed was the wait to be seated. We waited about 20 minutes, and once we got to the dining area, there were several empty tables. Once we're seated and ordered, the food came out timely and was delicious. I had a cheeseburger and the cherry cobbler with ice cream. Day 2: Breakfast. Since the food was good, we decided to go back for breakfast again the next day. Again, there was a wait to be seated. We were a group of 5 so we expected there might be a wait. The waitress was friendly and our orders were placed quickly. it did take a while for the food to come out from the kitchen. I had a country breakfast plate with ham. Again the food was delicious. Day 3: Supper. We had a relatively short wait to be seated this time. We were seated and asked for some water. It took over 20 minutes to get the water. Finally a different waitress came out and took our order. I ordered the hungry hiker challenge. It is a cheeseburger with three 8-ounce burger patties on it. The menu says if you finish you get some free cobbler. While we were waiting for our food we noticed that a local who came in and sat down after we were seated had already been served and was done eating before our food arrived. I finished the burger, and some of the other patron's noticed and congratulated me. When the waitress arrived she asked if we needed anything else. I asked if the free cobbler came with ice cream on it. She said no, so I ordered ice cream to go with my cobbler. It was a peach that day. Again, the food was delicious. The main thing that I notice about the restaurant was that despite having great food, service was pretty slow. One of the hikers I ate with noticed that the waitresses seemed to have to seat the customers, take the orders, deliver the food, clean the tables, and handle the check-out at the end of the meals. It seems like the service would have been much quicker if they had someone handling the seating, check-out's, and possibly bussing and cleaning tables. The worst part of the experience was the long waits to be seated and for the food to come out. The food itself was great and I found the servers and other customers to be friendly. The furnishings were clean with a 1960's diner feel. Overall, I would hesitate to go back if I were in a hurry of any kind. If time is no object, the food is great.

Next time, I'm leaving room for pie. I don't believe we had just one waitress. It seems that in this quaint little Diner, everyone is looked after and checked on as a whole by staff. My Ball jar of sweet tea was never any less than half full, and that sweet tea was *chef's kiss*. We both decided on the meatloaf, and I opted for cornbread, green beans and pickled beets. I felt like I had been transported back in time and was being fed by my great great grandmother. Sounds a bit dramatic, I know. But I haven't had cornbread, meatloaf or beets like this in so many years. It did not taste like restaurant food, it tasted like home cooking. We're already planning our next little "run away from life and parenthood" to Hot Springs, and Smoky Mountain Diner is top of the "will definitely visit again" list. Thank you for treating us like family.

I called over to the Square Root to check the kitchen timing (it was getting on 8) and all was well. We managed a seat at the bar and this was perfect for us. We chatted a bit with the servers, who were amazing. There is a ton enjoyment for the job and the space going on here. We also met some semi-locals who were awesome. Shout out to "Kendall-Jackson"! The menu is full of local ingredients and plenty of temptations. The specials were even more tempting and we grabbed oysters to kick it off. The pepper/spicy mignonette is so so good. It's just the right mix of classic and new. I didn't need the other sauce, especially with just 6 oysters. I eyed the yellowtail snapper (snapper, right? def not tuna) special, but opted for the Korean chicken sandwich. Quite good! I could have used a stronger flavor from the kimchi and, frankly, less of a mess, but the cook was just right, the flavor profiles were excellent, and the portion was plenty. A really good sandwich! I had the sweet potato chips as my side and I can see why they are popular. We kept the leftover sauces from the oysters just so I could dip my chips. Good call! She Said: I'd like to start by complimenting the fantastic staff. They've obviously been here a while, and they're enthusiastic about this place. He Said covered the oysters (yum!) and the mignonette (double yum!), so I'll focus on the mushroom tart that I got as my meal. The rough puff was really done well, and the mushroom and goat cheese combo was terrific. I thought they would be inside the pastry, but I adapted. The whole dish was terrific, and though I thought it was too salty for me, I also know that I'm sensitive to salt. All in all, we will definitely be back! Potty Points: no trip to the potty for me on this one!

On the plus side, the restaurant was incredibly easy to find and they actually have parking available, which is always a massive win when traveling. Once inside, we were seated at a high-top table, and our server was very pleasant throughout the meal. We started with the collard green and pimento cheese dip, which was supposed to come out hot in a skillet. Unfortunately, as I started dipping into the center, the middle of the dip was still cold. For mains, my husband ordered a chicken sandwich with a side of mac & cheese, and I went with the grilled cheese with candied bacon and tomato. Both of our sandwiches had the same issue: the tomato slices were cut incredibly thick--at least a half-inch. It made my husband's sandwich really hard to eat, to the point where he just took the tomato off and ate the chicken with a knife and fork. My grilled cheese was fine, but that massive tomato slice was just a bit much. As for the sides, my husband's mac & cheese was on the dry side. Mine wasn't dry, but it didn't really have a ton of flavor. I totally understand that the restaurant is trying to go for a fun, modern twist on southern classics, but for us, the execution fell a bit short. It was nice to try once while in town, but I'm not sure I'd visit again on a future trip to Asheville.
