The small town charm of the location could hardly be overstated. This place is across the street from a courthouse where the litigants and defendants of this very rural county (21,000 people in the whole county) congregate, walking by a copy of the U.S. constitution as they go. It's in a valley along the river. A few outdoor tables are available but there is plenty of space inside if weather is not suitable. What impressed me was that when I asked whether I could have a salad for breakfast they said yes, giving me the choice of salad (vegan, with local tempeh) or a more indulgent pastry. Me being me, I chose both. A blondie with toffee inside was dynamic and delicious while I waited for my salad. The flavor combination was quite strange: an espresso barbecue tempeh salad. Tempeh is kind of grainy so it's usually something best paired with strong flavorings, and what they did here worked pretty well. A large appalachai was a good way to wash things down. Given their flexibility in meeting special dietary needs, ambiance, and general deliciousness, I do not know what more I could ask for. read more

We specifically drove to Marshall to have lunch and support a local business as they get back on their feet. The service was outstanding. I have a dairy allergy and the person taking my order made a point to check with the kitchen to ensure her message to them was understood. Our food was delicious. One person said it was the bet BLT they had ever had! The Caesar salad was popular too. I encourage more people to take the time to have a pleasant drive and do your part to support your local communities. It's a win-win! read more

One of the only places in the Asheville area that serves decaf drip coffee. Their service is good and the ambiance had character that they can call their own. Their coffee is well balanced, not too watery or too strong. Their espresso is good. Their pastries are great. Their food is great. This place is a gem. read more

Great coffee shop in the heart of downtown Marshall. Plenty of flavor choices for coffee as well as sandwiches, soups, milkshakes, and pastries. Staff is always lovely and there is indoor and outdoor seating. Parking is a bit difficult. Local art is hanging on the wall and they also do live music! read more

Not a bad place for lunch, but pretty much run of the mill. The Rubin was acceptable, but hardly exceptional. The rye bread was dry and the sauerkraut hardly noticeable. Had a chocolate milkshake and they didn't skip on the ice cream. Very friendly staff. read more

I went to Zuma for lunch today after wanting to try their food. I was, sadly, disappointed. I ordered the "Club Salad" and it was the size of an appetizer. Not what I paid for, at all! I should have said something while I was there, but seriously, one of the smallest salads I have ever seen other than a side salad ordered with an entree. Totally disappointed!!!! Hardly any chicken in it, a few spinach leaves when it was supposed to be a lettuce mix. It was as if they were running out of items so they threw the minimal amount of ingredients together to somewhat serve a salad. Not ok. The dressing was the highlight and the cold brew coffee was good, but if you are going to charge what you do for a salad then serve a SALAD, not a side salad!!!! I should have gone across the street to the cafe over there that has great food. Won't be buying another meal from Zuma, only coffee. read more

This is Marshall's gathering place. Everyone loves Zuma and for good reason. I especially like to go for breakfast but the lunch menu is equally amazingly good and the specials are always good to try. Everyone who works there is friendly and the food is made with with care. It's also just a great place if all you need is a cup of coffee or a smoothie and one of their delicious bakery goods. Then, I would suggest you grab a sidewalk table and take in the small town as it goes by. read more

The bagel breakfast sandwiches saved this review. However, the first visit on day 1 (we were only in town 4 days) we sat around for an extra 45 minutes as all the local customers were served multiple times before us. We went up TWICE to say we still hadn't received our drinks. They said "oh sorry" (customer service is not great) and returned with the most bitter and watery drinks. We tossed them and tried to brush it off as a bad day for them. On our last day we decided to give them a second chance... nope same thing. Not great drinks, super slow service (30 minute wait for a small and medium mocha- no food this time), and truly just felt like visitors were disregarded. Sucks to knock local but if this is the only coffee shop in the area they won't change because they don't have to... hope this isn't the case. Just avoid if you want a timely cup of semi good coffee/expresso. read more

Surly service. I understand how hard service work is and I am always kind and considerate. I very politely made it clear that I had to be sure the latte I was ordering to go was decaffeinated and was met with a sneer. It not only was definitely caffeinated, I suspect he may have put two shots in it just to be a jerk. Lost a night's sleep and won't go back. Maybe this is just one bad employee and I've had good service there before, but I won't be returning. read more

This charming spot in downtown Marshall had convenient parking so we stopped for a bite. The special of the day, baked chicken carbonara, came with a nice salad. It could have used a bit more seasoning and was just a touch dry, but all in all a good value. The Italian wrap was excellent, nice bite from cured salami and pickled peppers. The soup of the day was hammy red bean-great flavor and beans were cooked just right, not too soft. Oatmeal cookies were just the right finishing touch. They were sweet, thin, both chewy and crispy. This is a serve yourself tea, bus your table place that recycles. Lots of locals and several nights apparently devoted to the local music scene. Worth checking out, certainly would go back. read more

This is a cool little cafe, as an "out of Towner" we immediately spotted this corner cafe with a cool personality. I ordered the chili and a strawberry/banana smoothie. Both were very delicious and the service was on point. Very nice people and a cool spot to relax. They also do local open mics, which we missed unfortunately BUT we enjoyed the overall feel of this place. Definitely going to be spending more time here during our vacation read more

I hesitate to review this place because we went on Thursday night to listen to Bobby Hicks and friends playing some great bluegrass. The music is incredible, but this is a very small venue that is very popular already. Good coffee, sweets and some light food offerings round it out, but it's the music that makes it great. read more

Staff was polite but not what I'd call friendly. Maybe they're tired, I get it. Sandwich (turkey club) was $11.75. It probably helps create a living wage for employees. I'm onboard for all that but it's not a great experience overall for the price. read more

Friendly locals spots with bikers and bicyclists dropping in all day. Great spot for meeting up with friends, having small meetings/book clubs, or just hanging out. Coffee from Counter Culture and pretty good sandwiches, pastries and wraps. There's not a ton of places to eat in Marshall, NC so it's lucky to find a place with good coffee, lighter food, and decent wifi. read more

I live on the west coast now. Somewhat of a coffee snob. Well, God help me, somewhat of a snob in general. But this place! Rivals any coffee shop I've been to here in San Francisco, Portland or Seattle. It is my pleasure to recommend Zuma to you. 5 star. Solid local coffee house with a daily special. Great Reubans, wraps, sandwiches and the cookies are scrumptous. Be prepared to see people that have just walked off the Appalachian Trial, lawyers, moms with babies, business folk and tourists all enjoying a cup of joe or a bite of lunch. I love chai latte's and they use Appala-chai which I don't enjoy so they do not carry my favorite drink. read more

Zuma Coffee, "where Marshall meets," is a great spot for lunch and coffee! I was visiting the mountains and decided to come down to civilization and internet access to do some work. The inside was very cozy, but I chose to sit outside along the sidewalk. The coffee was delicious and so was my chicken wrap. If you're ever in or around Marshall, Zuma is a great stop and pet friendly. I must come back to check out their live music! read more

I really wanted to like this place. It's nestled on the corner in historic downtown Marshall. It's cute and funky. The bagel sandwiches were pretty good, but could use more salt- and I say this as someone who does not use much salt. The drinks, however, were terrible. Dirty chai lattes were lukewarm and the taste was so off that we tossed them. We tried this place again, hoping for better results with coffee. The latte tasted like steamed water with a splash of milk. Again, not consumable. I hate to knock local places but unfortunately we will not return here again. read more

I apparently visited for an unplanned graduate seminar in attachment theory, anticipatory attraction, and the staggering complexity of human interaction. Nestled in the heart of downtown Asheville, French Broad Chocolate Lounge remains one of the city's most charming spots to linger. The atmosphere is warm, intimate, and inviting with just enough ambient buzz to feel alive while still allowing for meaningful conversation. On this particular visit, after a memorable lunch elsewhere downtown, my companion enthusiastically suggested we return for dessert. Upon arrival, she immediately spotted an enormous chocolate chip cookie, pointed at it, and declared, "I want this." When I suggested getting my own, she insisted we share one instead. Naturally, we found ourselves on the now-famous leather couch. What followed was equal parts delightful, bewildering, and deeply human. The cookie itself was excellent--warm, indulgent, and perfectly suited for sharing. The couch was comfortable enough to encourage conversation, contemplation, and, apparently, existential reflection. Somewhere between bites of chocolate and discussions of life, relationships, and the curious ways emotionally intelligent people can accidentally tie themselves into knots, I found myself participating in what became one of the more psychologically layered afternoons of my life. French Broad excels at creating an atmosphere where people slow down. You arrive intending to enjoy dessert and somehow end up discussing vulnerability, possibility, timing, and whether meaningful connections unfold linearly or in loops. The chocolate is exceptional. The ambiance is cozy. The seating encourages lingering. And should you find yourself sharing a cookie with someone intriguing, be advised that the afternoon may become considerably more memorable than anticipated. Finally, when it comes to cozy confection shops, girls do circle back. And if you don't, you're missing out.
