Their website claims this was voted best breakfast in California, per FoodNetwork. While we doubt that it's really the best, it's certainly up there. Based in a renovated house in pasadena, this place has that cozy feel, as if you found yourself in the middle of kansas with your grandma making some of her homemade goodness. Most of the food is pretty solid and you can't go wrong, including the omelets, eggs, etc. What does stand out, however, is their french toast. It's classic french toast, but covered in corn flakes, and fried. It takes the crispy outter of any french toast you've grown up to love, and takes it to another dimension. Your tongue will dance, your mouth will salivate, and you will wish you had more. This is definitely one of the better ways to wake up on a lazy saturday or sunday morning. read more

The corn flake french toast is pretty good..The blueberries in our pancakes were fresh, the egg panini with bacon were ok, although the bacon was a bit burnt..I thought it was a good place to go with family because the servings are generous--but to be voted by food network as the best place for breakfast in California?? I had high expectations when i saw that rating..Now I believe that the food network people don't get out much. We were in town for my friend's wedding and wanted to take advantage of the amazing restaurants in Old Town. Marston's had pretty good reviews so we took a chance...and we were not disappointed! We only waited for a few minutes, outdoors, which kind of sucked because it was drizzling (where was the California sunshine?!). We were seated outdoors and our server was very friendly. Boyfriend ordered the vegetarian huevos rancheros and I got the fantastic French toast. And boy, were they fantastic! They were SO filling that I only ate 1 and a half pieces of the toast. Woo hoo! Marston's passed the test for a regular weekend brunch and also for Mother's Day. I found Marston's sometime last year after stumbling out of pilates class and realizing I was starving. A quick Yelp search revealed Marston's was highly rated so my sister and I decided to give them a shot. First, the parking lot is tiny so be cautious to pull over to the side if you see a car trying to leave. Don't be THAT PERSON who blocks the entire driveway, halting the flow of traffic in the parking lot AND on the street. Anyways, if you go on a weekend for breakfast/brunch, be prepared to wait a bit. I went on a Sunday around 10:45 and we waited about 20 minutes. I think. We were finally seated on the porch in front and it was really nice to sit outside and enjoy the day while we ate our food and sipped on our coffees. If I remember correctly, we ordered the Samon Benedict and the Eggs Benedict, both delicious but ask for the sauce on the side if you like to control how much sauce you eat. The second time I went was for Mother's Day. I made a reservation almost a month in advance (didn't want to risk another Mother's Day brunch fiasco like I had last year). Marston's was very prepared. They had already posted a special Mother's Day brunch menu on the website when I called to make the reservation. Day of, we arrived expecting a madhouse but because they were only accepting reservations and no walk-ins that day, the place wasn't as busy as I had expected. The parking lot was fine and we were seated right away. The staff was fast and efficient and the food was delicious and very filling. I tried the California Orange Salad this time because I was in the mood for something light. The rest of the family ordered Huevos Rancheros, Eggs Benedict and the father got some ridiculously large omelett. I say ridiculous because it was delicious but it was stuffed with so much food inside that it looked ridiculous on the plate (btw, he ate the entire thing). We also split an order of french toast for the table. Everything was fresh, delivered to our table in record time, our drinks were refilled many times and we had a very lovely brunch. My mom enjoyed herself as did the rest of us so all in all, a successful Mother's Day brunch. Hats off to Marston's Restaurant for being well prepared for the rush of families and having enough staff to keep the flow of food/drinks moving smoothly. I will definitely go back. read more

The food at this place wasn't the most delectable I have ever had. But it was definitely good. I had salmon benedict and the hollandaise sauce was light but creamy. Much better than most places. My boyfriend and I also ordered french toast with strawberries and bananas. The fruit was fresh and very plentiful, I was really happy with it. But the French Toast was a bit odd, it was cooked with what looked and tasted like corn flakes. It wasn't for me but it wasn't terrible. All in all I was happy, good prices, GREAT service! read more

Marston's is a great little find near Old Town Pasadena. The style of Marston's appears to be a classic Pasadena one-story house converted to a restaurant. Very cute and charming. The breakfast menu is somewhat limited, but all of the food is pretty good. Service has been great for each of my visits as I have been treated with warm smiles and friendly attitudes. Plus: 1) Great place for a brunch date 2) Cozy home-like ambience 3) Delicious omelettes and breakfast potatoes Minus: 1) Not that many tables 2) Coffee is just okay Parking: They have a private lot which is often times full. i hate to rain on everyone's positive-review-parade, but i was pretty disappointed with this place. a big part of my ratings system is dependent upon customer service/cleanliness/attention to detail for the restaurant in general, apart from the actual food. as such, i was rather disappointed w/marston's, especially after all of the glowing reviews below. i knew we'd have a wait for our late brunch, so the wait and the crammed interior of the restaurant wasn't the problem. the problem arose pretty quickly - we were given waters, and my friend held up her glass and was like "yeah... i'm not so much gonna drink mine..." the bottom of her glass was full of what looked like bread crumbs - and mine was too. it took me a minute or two to flag down our waitress and tell her our water was full of crumbs, and we weren't given an "i'm sorry" or "oh, whoops!" or any sort of reaction at all. uhh... is crumby water normal at marston's? thanks but no thanks. so then, my salad arrives. i ordered the chicken salad with mandarin oranges... and lo an behold, on top of one of the oranges was a slice of warm-ish banana (presumably for pancakes or something... and no, banana was not an ingredient to my salad). now... i know it might not seem like a big deal to some people to have an errant piece of food on their plate, but to me, that signals a) sloppiness; b) carelessness; c) laziness; or d) all of the above - none of which you really want your food preparer to possess. it's not like the slice of banana was gross, but i do think it's gross that someone else's food ended up on my salad. did it fall off leaving the kitchen (i.e., untouched and not trash) or coming back into the kitchen (i.e., left on someone's plate and now trash)? gross. that kind of killed the place for me, even though the salad was good. after our server was so whatever about the layer of crumbs in our water, i didn't even bother mentioning the banana in my salad. especially after she forgot my friend's english muffin. the place was busy, to be sure, but the kinds of mistakes that were made - cleanliness, friendliness, banana-less salad - were kind of no-brainers for me. i don't think i'll be going back. read more

my boyfriend and i used to go to this place all the time. we would always split our food because the portions are really big. the macadamian pancakes are sooo good. we would also get an order or bacon and breakfast potatos. since its a small place, we preferred sitting outside because of the nice view and we wouldn't leave smelling like a restaurant. however, ever since we were not allowed to have our dog with us on the patio, we've never returned. it seemed a little odd for them not to allow it since pasadena is such a pet friendly city. we are crazy about our dog, so i don't think we would be going back to this place. read more

I liked that it was crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside, with just a taste of cinnamon. I tried the offering of strawberries, but the strawberries were a bit sour. My husband had the smoked salmon omelette which was fine if you really like salmon, and we didn't like the side potatoes which tasted just of peppers and onions. The coffee was blah. read more

The batter is light and fluffy and the cornflakes help hold on to the butter and syrup, as well as adding a really interesting new texture. I picked this place out after reading about it on a blog about best breakfast places in LA. I love breakfast sausage and eggs so after seeing some photos on Yelp, I knew I had to check it out. We found a space in their free parking area and were quickly seated with a choice of inside or out. When I made my order, there was no extra charge to switching my potatoes for fruit and not just any canned fruit but fresh cut strawberries, bananas, and pineapple pretty'ing up my plate. The waitress offered 3 different kinds of cheese for my eggs and let me tell you, these links were proper bad boys- not dinky freezer bitten cafeteria sausage. The coffee was rich and strong and the portions were quite sizable. My friend got the California omelette, oh, that looked so good too! The service was excellent. They have a nice host, runners/bussers and of course our waitress had eyes and ears out for anything we needed. The crowd was mixed and because you sit so close, you can hear everyone's conversation but so what! My friend and I had a laugh catching up and listening in all the same (accidental and intentional although we didn't mention it until later:)). Did I mention the ambiance is so homey that if feels like someone's house was turned into a little cafe. I enjoyed the music in the background and that they didn't rush us although there were people waiting. The coffee was strong enough to make us want to do a marathon anyway so we didn't hold up the table too long. The total was totally wonderful so of course that makes it easier to tip a little extra. Mmmmm, mmm! This is my new favorite place. My favorite meal is breakfast so if I could, I would go here every day! Marsten's menu also has some appealing lunch foods served here as well. Everyone's food looked amazing. Pasadena has Trader Joe's and Target so you can get your errands done afterward. If you don't believe me, don't go so that I can always get a seat! The Californian omelette was no joke. This thing was huge and it definitely was filling. One thing I have to agree with a friend that recommended the place was the toast, it was the bomb!! Yeah toast, it was free with the meal but it was sooo good. Anyways my better half got the old fashion breakfast: bacon, sausage and potatoes. Nothing really that special, but none the less good. Next time I'm trying their french toast and macadamia pancakes. Got here about 10:30 AM and got seated at the bar in about 20 mins. Not so bad of a wait. I had one of the best chicken sandwiches w roasted red peppers and buffalo mozzarella, on paninni bread so fresh I think they must have baked it that morning. Ask for Mary the waitress. She has been there for 23 years - since the place opened and she made the visit memorable. FYI - if it's busy, parking in their small lot may be a bit tough. We'll definitely be back. read more

With all the hype about the cornflake french toast, my stomach had been eager to try this place.We tried to go on the weekend but the wait is too long so took a day off on a weekday to try this place out. I would've given this place a 5 star but parking is pretty small. The cornflake does give the nutty flavor but its too dry and its really not that great.
