We chose this restaurant as it was close to our accommodation (The Smuggler's Notch Resort) and, as it was Tuesday during the off season, it was the only place nearby that was actually open. We were pleasantly surprised. The food here was excellent. We started with the fresh bread and maple butter - yum! I had the fish and chips, my spouse had a Greek-style pasta with salmon. My fish was perfectly seasoned and cooked with a crisp crust. The fries were obviously hand cut. My spouse's salmon was also perfectly cooked, and the pasta was tasty, although he questioned the addition of a copious amount of feta. As for beverages, I had iced tea that tasted freshly brewed. Spouse opted for beer. He felt that the beer list, although good, was nothing special. It was mostly IPAs. I wonder if this will change during the high season. This is a solid bar with good food. We came a few years ago when they had a musician. This year was during the playoffs during a snowstorm ;) Services were good, and food was plentiful. Very cute spot, great food despite being in a sort of remote area, and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, especially with our toddler, so I would recommend to anyone dining with children. 3.8 This is the second time we've eaten at Martell's as we only eat there when we visit Smuggs. The place has a cozy vibe with hooks along the wall to hang all of your winter wear. The menu is pretty extensive for a small place and they have an array of local beers on tap. My husband and I shared a hamburger which was a decent size with a lot of french fries both of which very tasty. One daughter had a Cobb salad, which was gigantic and the other had a Greek salad which was on the smaller side so she was able to have some of her sister's. The service is OK. Up in Vermont for a couple of days at Smugglers Notch and stopped in here to Martell's two nights back mostly because it just looked like a decent townie place. Glad we did. Skipped dining room seating and opted for the bar which was a great decision because we got to converse with owner / bartender Matt and some local residents. Had the pulled pork sandwich night #1 and it was out of the park. Everyone in our party was so pleased with our meals, the atmosphere and especially, the prices we said if we didn't find someplace else we'd come back the next night and in fact, did so! Had their steak tips w rice and broccoli the 2nd visit and that was actually the best well cooked broccoli I've had. The tips were fire and I clean elf my plate in minutes. Again, entertained and engaged with owner Matt and another batch of engaging and friendly Vermonters we silently considered if we should enjoy their lunch menu too. Well, as it happened the weather was foul our next day and out of laziness and a desire for more good food; we wound up butts in the seats one more time at Martells. And even severely understaffed Matt and his one cook still pushed out one of the fattest, well cooked Hamburgers w bacon and melted cheese I could've asked for on cool, dreary afternoon. No offense to any other eateries in the Smuggs area, but you could take a lesson from the Red Fox and a) be open early and b) don't close on Mondays and Tuesdays. My family and I came here last night. I think since we were so hungry from our long drive yesterday , we just ate . We decided to get appetizers, and we got the loaded nachos with chicken. I thought the chicken was very dry and had no taste to them . The calmaria had a werid taste to it. I decided to get the baked mac and cheese, but it was very watery vs. chessey . My husband got the classic burger, but it was very dry, and he had to cut off the bacon because of so much fat on it. My mother got the Mac and cheese, and she said it tasted alright. My father got the shrimp scampi, and he said it was very delicious. We were shocked that when we received our check that they automatically charged us a tip, we were only a party of 4, and they charged us for a party of 6. I would avoid this place at all cost. Great place not far from Smugglers notch resort. A nice change from the typical pub food or pizza that are offered at too many places. I was craving something non-fried and Asian - so I was so happy to see the Ahi tuna on their menu. They had a nice selection of food choices, from pasta to jambalaya. Everyone was really happy with the food. Nice portions, taste great, and reasonably priced. Kid's menu is only $6. Dessert is $6 for a slice of apricot cheesecake cake, soooo delicious! Fluffy cheesecake with bites of apricot. My daughter devoured it!! Loved their draft beer like the Stowe Cider and Switchback ale are under $6, hard to come by that price these days. What a gem. Oh, they also have a side room where you can play a game of pool ($1 per game honor system) away from the restaurant or bar crowd. We'll be coming back for more! read more

We were staying at Smuggler's Notch Resort and booked reservations for 7:30 Saturday Night late January. Upon arrival the parking lot was packed and there were groups of people standing outside. We made our way to the hostess podium and after a couple min of watching the staff run around like crazy we were greeted and told it would be about 10 min until our table cleared and they were just waiting for someone to pay. We were provided a couple updates as we waited (without asking) and we were seated right along with the estimated wait time. The place was PACKED! We were seated in the dinning room right in front of the large speaker at the stage and a 6 person band was setting up. My wife panicked, but we were told they weren't going live until 9:30. Our waitress came over and took our drink and appetizer order and we chatted away in the loud lively atmosphere. We received the Fried Artichoke Hearts which were simply battered and fried and served with chipotle aioli. These were ok, crispy and not to greasy. I ordered a Chicken Piccata which was pan seared floured Chicken breasts, a lemon caper white wine pan sauce and sautéed carrots, red peppers over fettuccini and fresh baby arugula. The chicken & pasta were cooked perfect, just the right amount of capers, the portion was HUGE & the sauce was decent. I would 100% ask for no carrots next time. IMO, they did not belong in that dish. My wife ordered the Harvest Spinach Salad which was Baby spinach, dried cranberries, and roasted butternut squash, tossed in a maple balsamic vinaigrette topped with crumbled goat cheese and toasted pepitas. She added some Medium Rare Steak Tips. The salad was delicious, fresh and crisp. The steak tips had a nice flavor/marinade, but were cooked a little weird kinda missing a char and were more medium well. we walked in around 3:30 for drinks and possibly an appetizer. greeted with "Do you have reservations " which i find off putting. we said no and was told that the only option was bar or the 5 stools on the wall. (we had our 16 year old, so stools it was.) we ordered two bottles of beer and a root beer...there were severas people at the bar and two tables of two. the drinks took 15 to 20 minutes. we had front row seats and around 4 pm we watched many people come only to be turned away. disappointing, not given an option to stay but there may be a wait, just we cannot acommodate you. if we were the owners we would have been horrified. We just ordered drinks and we felt like a burden. The second round took even longer along with an appetizer of tuna tartar. Again, it was two bottles of beer and a rootbeer. At 5 pm two new servers walked in. We had experienced enough in the hour and a half we were there. Definitely will not return, heard from reviews the food was good. They found no fault in their situation when we commented and even added their own gratuity for our table and their discretion. 2 hours for dinner at a pub when we weren't trying to linger is not acceptable. We had a very nice dinner at Martell's. Since we were a group of 19 folks, I always add that into my evaluation. The restaurant was understaffed and the 2 staff members were running around like mad. This lead to some longer than expected wait times and service that good, but could have been better. Most of the food was really good. The fried fish was excellent and the Mediterranean Pasta was also very good. The ribs we a little dry and not great. I wouldn't order them again. We weren't offered coffee or desert at the end of the meal, which I thought was strange, but again, 2 people supporting the entire dining room. read more

The walls were filled with framed photos of various artists who had not visited the place. We all ordered the same meal - grilled chicken sandwich and fries. The chicken was a bit under seasoned but enjoyable. The sweet Basil aioli brought a nice flavor but I wish they had added more to the sandwich. The worst restaurant experience I have ever had. This was our 3rd time at the Red Fox but we will not be returning. We arrived at 3 pm on Sunday for an early dinner and was seated in the middle of the dining room in front of an active air conditioner. (In October??) It was freezing. The server did not come back for a while, so I went to the wait station to ask if we could move and we were told to sit anywhere. It was better, but still cold. I walked over to the a/c unit and it was set for 60 degrees and the fan was on high. We left our coats on an noticed that the other patrons all had their coats on, some had hats on too. After ten minutes a waitress came by and asked for if anyone had helped us. We ordered. I wanted a cocktail but ordered hot tea as it was still really cold. Our drinks came. We then waited and waited, still feeling very cold. After about 30 minutes I asked the server why the a/c was on and she said the servers were hot from running around. (there were 3 servers and 6 tables of customers when we were sat) I pointed out that everyone in the room had coats on. The server was clearly irritated but turned down the a/c. We continued to wait for our food and noticed that two other tables that seated after we did were enjoying their meals. We continued to wait. We became very annoyed and realized at this point we would never enjoy our meal so we got up and paid for our drinks. Just then, the waitress brought out our food out of the kitchen I have to wonder if it was sitting there and she wasn't bringing it to us because we had complained about the a/c. Regardless, we left. Honestly, the first time I came here it was great. Burger was amazing and the service was great as well. As for my second time, we made a reservation and came early not sure if they are just short handed or what not but we waiting a while to be seated and when we were seated, I don't think the server was notified she got sat because we sat there for almost 15 minutes waiting for a simple water. She came and ordered an appetizer which was just bread and butter, which this took 20 minutes to come for simple bread and butter. Then came our food, food was great but took a long time considering they were not as busy as we thought. Our waitress only talked to us twice which really annoying considering we had to ask for our waters to be refilled. Overall, the service needs improvement but the food is great! It needs some simple updating and cleaning, more staff, and the food doesn't wow. If they spent a few bucks updating the lighting in this place, it would make such a difference.
