Furthermore, my love for you grew stronger when I couldn't find my favorite cherry flavored Belgian beer anywhere in the Boston area. Home for Thanksgiving, I sought good beer. Weary of the Southside's often blasé liquor stores, I Yelped, and was reminded of Marty's, a maroon warehouse with rounded edges I'd driven past en route to the optometrist, wedding receptions, and childhood karate classes. The fluorescents inside glowed with the musky yellow of a nana's pantry. With only twenty minutes before closing time, I gave their breads, candies, deli case, and abundant wine racks only a passing glance. As my gaze fell onto the chilled racks, sense memory of barley turned over my tongue. Their range of microbrews is diverse enough, particularly for the neighborhood, with prices that range from decent to comically Newtonesque in their inflation. The numbers on the inky tags stuck to deuce-deuces and singles of Delirium Tremens, Ommegang, Saison Dupont, Stone, St. Bernardus, and The People's Pint had me longing for the bartering systems and bargain-bin bounties of New Orleans or Greenfield. Alliterative folks out there. Four packs of Old Rasputin, 90 Minute, Punkin Ale (a surprise given its quick sellout elsewhere), as well as several varieties of Southern Tier, Old Chub, Dale's Pale, Left Hand, Southampton, Brooklyn, and Dogfish were all $10-12. Thoughtfully, they also carry several cheap cases of watery domestics, should you be en route to my friend Mookie's house at the point of purchase. Settling on a sixer of Raison d'Etre, I sleepily checked out, gravy on the brain, offering muttered appreciation to the cashier, who without provocation accepted my leaky paper bag of empties, even after a stock boy had told me the Bottle Deposit closed an hour earlier. As I exited, much of the staff, shift finished, headed to the parking lot, with plastic thimbles of what smelled like Jager and Disarrono, sifting cigarettes and swaying to 94.5 as it bellowed from a parked Jeep. I briefly considered popping a bottle and joining them, but thought better of it, recalling my own satisfied warmth that came after locking up retail shops and toasting relieved co-workers. Theirs was a boozy, genuine peace, and I was grateful to see it. read more

My favorite liquor store in the area hands down. They have a phenomenal craft beer selection, with a lot of seasonal rotation. Tastings are typical, which is a great way to try new beer. They also have a great selection of specialty foods and make great sandwiches. I'm amazed at their customer service. I like the remodel! I love the beer selection! Overall, I'm a huge fan of Marty's... they usually have what I want. They do need to step their tequila game up a little, but that may be a reflection of what their clients want, so I can't fault them too much on that. they're a little pricey, but nothing that will make you run for cover. Went there for the first time this past Saturday night about 9:50 PM. We were staying at the Hotel Indigo and wanted to bring some beer back to the room. I have to say at first glance, it appeared that they have a fine beer & wine selection. We are big craft brew drinkers and there were many options for even the most discriminating drinker. I noticed lots of good alcohol pairing choices such as cheese, Boar's Head sandwiches, chocolate, fine crackers cigars etc. Everything was great except the pickle-pussed clerk who rang up my beer purchase which consisted of two 22 ounce bombers. I am not sure if he was annoyed that I walked in at 9:50 PM - 1 hour and 10 minutes before closing and roused him out of his sleep. Or perhaps he is just a crank-pot in general. I was in and out of the store within 5 minutes and did not need any help. Either way, he threw my change (barely) into my hand and did not follow-up with a thank you. At first, I thought it was me - did I say something wrong? No - all I said was "hello" and "thank you." Perhaps charm school is in order for this grumpy guy! Setting aside the clerk issue, the store appears to offer it all. While I don't live in that immediate area, I do have relatives who live nearby so I plan to return someday. read more

Didn't really know what to expect walking in, but boy am I glad we did! Their selection is awesome, seriously huge. They have every kind of booze imaginable, and had a ton of rare beers and aged beers to peruse and purchase. There was also a free tasting going on. For those of you who have been to Houston, consider Marty's as the local Specs. Marty's has the best craft beer selection in Boston and the most knowledgeable staff. On my most recent visit, I was looking for a hard-to-find bottle of Brooklyner-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse. Of course Marty's had it in stock... what was more impressive is that when I asked the sales clerk when it was bottled, he was able to identify the vintage by a barely perceptible bottle design change. Marty's has a fantastic wine department. The staff knows their wine, and the chief wine buyer, Tom Schmeisser, is internationally recognized for his superior wine knowledge. He and his staff have an excellent reputation when it comes to wine. If you need solid wine advice and are soooo terribly done with snobs and pretentiousness, go to Marty's. They are friendly, down-to-earth, and know a ton. Seriously. They can help you with your food pairings and pick appropriate wines for your dinner parties. Nice Burgundy section. Great selection, but you certainly pay for it. The staff also has fascist tendencies. Nevermind the ID horror stories that others have mention. I had my bag searched after going to the store one night. I was the only one in there at the time, and I went straight to what I wanted and was at the register in 30 seconds. Despite the fact that everyone probably watched me the whole time, they still demanded that I open my bag and prove that I didn't steal anything. I won't be going back. I've always bypassed Marty's and gone to ther liquors store closer to me. However, I stopped in on my way to an event and did some browsing. The selection is amazing, and they have my favorite Australian beer and Australian wine that I've only been able to get special ordered through another shop. Although it is out of my way, and I will patronize my local establishment, it's nice to know that I can pop in here for hard to find items. read more

I always feel like a criminal when I am making my purchases. The snotty and condesending cashiers and the totally freaky and nasty bitter man who hovers about sneering and overlooking the staff and customers, I theorize he is Marty's ne're do well brother. When giving people directions to my house, I say "just go a block past Marty's." Even those from out of state always mange to stop AT Marty's before coming over. They have a great selection of beer and wine, and friends are happy with the cigars as well. I've never had any trouble with cranky employees. When I need suggestions, they are always helpful. When I know what I want, they offer to carry it to the counter for me. In fact, they are pleasantly entertained when I walk up to the counter with two bottles of Marty's brand vodka for my little sister's birthday party. That said, if you're looking for rock-bottom prices on beer flavored water, this is not the place for you. I like that their refrigerator is HUGE so that all of the beer stays nice and cold. I like that they carry Clear Flour bread, have a fantastic sandwich station, and Carry Delicious olive oil and chocolates. It's always a party at Marty's. read more

I've been going to Marty's for about a year and a half, and I've had nothing but great service. The place is large, and there are always employees around you if you need assistance. For Valentine's Day I surprised my wife by cooking duck, and when I went to Marty's for advice on the wine to serve with it, I was helped quickly and efficiently, and the wine was amazing ! Great selections of wines, huge selection of beers, sake, port and rum. There are interesting selections in all price categories. This place rocks. They consistently have the cheapest prices. Also, they sell this ridiculously cheap Australian wine that I CANNOT, for the life of me, find anywhere else. Honestly, I bet that even if I did, it would be like $5 bucks more expensive. Sadly, I no longer live in this area, but when we are nearby my boyfriend and I stock up like alcoholic miscreants. I dig that they carry pretty much the whole line of Stone Brewery beers from Escondido, CA. I used to live there and we discovered it right before we moved here. Needless to say it was a sad parting. Selection of beer, wine and liquor is the best I've seen in metro Boston. Five stars for the selection. 3 stars for the pricing though. You are going to pay for this selection, Marty's is usually going to be higher than other stores. I am mostly a beer drinker and Marty's gets beers that no one else has, so I do go there for the selection. The staff is also very knowlegeble, especially with the beer and wine. read more

I primarily go there for the wine and beer, of which they have in copious amounts. Their staff is very helpful and knowledgeable in making selections should you need some assistance. If you like fancy beers, I don't think there is a better place to shop. Oh, and yes it does smell unique. When I walk there, I can smell it from about a block away. Good selection. Used to live not far from here and was a great place to go when we organized beer tastings with friends. Had a reason to stop in yesterday - first time in a long while. Beer selection continues to impress and spent a long time browsing Belgian, French, British and excellent US craft beer selections. Prices are high - I can get the Dogfish special beers for $2-$4 cheaper than Marty's. But no doubting their commitment to cover a wide array of styles and tastes. I also see that they do half barrels of various beers, including Dogfish Head beers, though didnt see prices. Will have to check those out. Oh and the random selection of British candies at the checkout, including one of my all time favorites - Curlywurlies, is pure, unadulterated (evil) genius product placement ... at least from my perspective. read more
