    Sashimi

Maru does a good job. I liked the prior version of this restaurant. They keep in line with tru Japanese dining. Sashimi is ok. The Katsu Curry was fine. Problem is I have had some really good sushi in my life so it's probably not a fair marker when you are on Campbell in Tucson. I would go again. The service as a bit clunky, can't remember but I think you order at the counter then sit with a number and it is delivered. Hard to expect a great tip from the customer with that process.

What more can I say than the usual... this is one of our favorite places and we love our visits each time. Here's some recent try's. Service, space and food always great.

Their service has definitely improved since last time I visited. Everything I ate was delicious. I often eat solo and this restaurant is perfect for it. I love their selection of menu items. Their ambience reminds me of home :D Side note: Be extremely careful getting into the rear parking lot if you have a low car

I've tried Ramen from Maru different location n brand, it wasn't that great at all... this time I decide to try Maru Plus main brand and different dishes that will be more guaranteed the food quality n taste.... Ordering Curry dishes whether it's Rices or Noodles dishes, it's more guaranteed... just depending on the spice sweetness level n spicy level!! Pork Katsu cutlets with rice, that's one of my favorite curry dish!!! It's tasty n delicious!!! Since Maru Plus decorations are so classic Japanese modern youngsters style with Japanese convenient foods!!

I came back on a Friday night around 7:30p and it was crowded for a later-dinner time. I didn't know they updated to counter-service where you order at the register and they bring your order to you. I was waiting for my friend to show but wanted to grab the last open table, which was a two-seater that had a laptop on it, which I assumed was the restaurant's but the cashier told me to go ahead and sit there (thankfully) so I ordered edamame and an Asahi draft while I waited. It appeared they were short-staffed as the cashier was also acting as server, I think she said they did not have sushi at the time although there was someone at the sushi station, though I came in wanting the mazemen (dry ramen) anyway. She was friendly, but the ordering experience definitely felt rushed as she was the only one taking orders and bringing out food, and the phone also rang before I was about to order but I could tell she needed to pick it up so I remained patient and let her take the call. Once my friend arrived we ordered (again) but since the cashier was so busy with other orders she had forgotten my edamame and beer until we sat down again. The ramen itself was worth the wait as I usually go with soup ramen, but the dry ramen with spicy pork, chashu, green onion, and soft boiled egg was flavorful and the right balance of heat, sweet, and spicy. One of the cooks brought out a bowl of soup ramen and my friend accepted though I guess it wasn't what he ordered, and his correct order came out after a while, but it was slightly confusing. I wish they had another employee helping on such a busy Friday night, and I wish they kept/went back to full-service as counter service with such a big menu, alcohol, and limited seating felt a bit overwhelming for whatever reason. I will chalk up the experience as "understaffed on a busy night" and hope the ordering and timing goes smoother next time, as the food and friendly-albeit-busy service are worth the experience.

If you're ever caught in the "I can't decide what I want to eat" mood, Maru Plus is a good option. They offer signature Japanese dishes such as Ramen, Sushi, Onigiri, Curry, Japanese sandwiches, Omurice, etc. Their service is fast, and the ambiance is very relaxed. At this visit, I had the Tonkotsu Pork Ramen. The portion was generous, but the quality was okay. They do have a salad bar where you can add more toppings to your ramen at no extra cost. Bottom line: Maru Plus is where variety meets value. Come hungry, or with friends that can't make up their minds, and leave full without breaking the bank.

    Pretty good donburi
    Taric W.

Maru is solid fast-casual Japanese food that can make good food depending on your patience and what you're going to order. What I liked: I'm not a big ramen person (everyone else in here seemed to be); I prefer to get a nice donburi--basically the same stuff over rice instead of broth. I've had the beef, which was good, and the pork, which was even better. They come with decent enough toppings, but if you want more there's an outstanding little condiment bar with sesame seeds, green onions, eel sauce, etc. Basically everything you could ask for. What needs work: Honestly it takes way, way too long to eat here. Whether it's lunch or dinner, busy or slow. On both of my visits, it took 30 minutes to get anything. Make that 40 minutes if you dare to order from their sushi bar, which tastes good but is sloppily made. It's like they have really good ingredients but nobody who knows what they're doing. It's also a little on the pricey side. You're not getting good service or atmosphere, but you're paying about the same as you would in much more comfortable settings. I'm still open to trying more of the menu because again, the food isn't *bad*. If someone asked me to return, I probably would. I just wouldn't recommend it to my friends.

Tempura. Tasted good, just didn't have the crunch it's supposed to have.

Great tasting food. Wasn't a very welcoming experience, probably I came in half an hr before closing. Tempura wasn't made the traditional way but it tasted good.

    Beef Udon with bonito broth

My friend who is a Tucson local brought me here, and I was shocked I had not tried it before. The interior of the restaurant had fun murals, and the Staff was incredibly friendly. The guy at the cashier helped me make my order and set me up with a punch card. The menu has an expansive amount of dishes that are all fairly priced, including several lunch specials. I had never tried udon before, so I settled on the beef udon with the traditional bonito broth. I was blown away at how flavorful it was, the beef alone was so tender delicious. I am highly anticipating returning to try more menu items. I recommend this place to anyone looking for an affordable bite to eat or good Japanese food.

Second time. Had the tonkatsu curry. Perfectly cooked protein. Crunchy and tender. The curry was very tasty also, spicy just enough. I only wish it was temperature hotter. I wish they had some cabbage sunomono. Great sushi chef, thoughtful in presentation.

First time at this Asian restaurant. Lots of items on the menu to choose from. Order at the counter, food is then brought to you. Worth the visit

    Vegan sushi
    Lori A.

I tried 2 vegan sushi rolls. They were good, but made much better after I added to them at the topping bar. I love this topping bar which is probably more geared to the noodle bowls, but the toppings were a great addition to my sushi. The staff was super sweet and helpful.

You order at the register and can choose to sit anywhere. Our food came out quickly. We ordered the Guilin dried style and the other bowl with broth. The noodle bowl includes rice noodles. meat-based spiced sauce, spicy pickled greens & bamboo, pickled long beans, roasted peanuts, and you can choose between 2 proteins. For my two proteins, I chose crispy pork belly and pork intestine. I wish they gave a little more because it was so good. I personally loved the dry one because the noodles soaked well with the sauce. The sauce was sooo gooodddd. The noodles were perfectly cooked - had a good soft bounce to it. The guilin with broth was also so good. The broth was perfectly cooked chicken broth. The pickled greens were a nice touch to balance the flavors. I wish this place was closer to me because I literally would go every week. This is one of the best noodle bowls I had in such a long time. We got an array of standard fare as well as some things that I don't normally see on menus of other Chinese restaurants around town. The dumplings were good, though I was underwhelmed by the lack of spice on the Spicy Pork wonton dumplings. The flavor was very good, but it was not spicy at all. For entrees, we got Curry Chicken and Cumin Lamb. I'd never had Cumin Lamb before, and it rocketed to the top of my favorites list! It was gorgeously flavorful, fragrant, and spicy, warming as I ate. The spiced oil soaked into the rice, spreading the flavor to every last grain. It's really lovely and I highly recommend it. The restaurant is bigger than it appears from the outside, with a bright, cheerful ambience. Despite being busy, it never felt too loud, which was nice. Promptly seated, drinks brought out, order taken and food delivered fast, hot and correct. The background music was some chinese music tv station playing modern easy listening tunes and, along with the comfortable chairs and solid table made for a relaxing environment. The food? meh. You can see our order in the latest photo and how expensive it was. the Lo Mein was mostly tasteless and certainly lacking in thast "lo mein flavor." Although the meat was tender, the sauce was just a sticky brown sauce. Surprisingly, the Spicy Pickle Tofu was essentially the same sticky brown sauce as the Lo Mein but with some fried tofu in it and without the noodles but nothing otherwise remarkable. You can tell by looking at my earlier picture attached. The old picture shows a bright and colorful plate. The dish today was a dark brown (you could hardly see the tofu from the beef) as everything was just dark. Eggplant seemed to have a similar brown sauce as well but the eggplant was otherwise tasteless. Nothing popped. Chicken bites were bland and not at all crunchy. Just fried to soft texture but no real flavor. According to our server, the menu was just recently updated about a month ago. We noticed because one of our favorites was the Fried Taro Pie which is now gone from the menu and the server said yes, that's right. Maybe this place has a new owner or chef, but it's no longer in my top asian restaurants for Tucson.

We ordered the split pot (highly recommend!), which lets you enjoy two different broths in one enormous bowl. And these bowls are huge. Totally ideal for 2-4 people and perfect for sharing. The flavors were phenomenal, and if you're a spice chaser, they do not play around. Level 1 already brings heat. They also offer vegetarian and vegan-friendly ingredients, which I appreciated. Overall it was such a fun, interactive dining experience--one of those spots you'd never stumble upon without a local recommending it. I will say it's a bit pricier than you'd expect for a small, tucked-away location, and the bill adds up quickly. They also charge for things you might not realize--like the salsa bar--so just keep that in mind. But honestly? Delicious food, a super unique experience, and I'll absolutely be back to try the higher spice levels.
