We had the Tonkatsu Udon with corn, BK Udon with corn, potato croquette, sweet potato tempura, zucchini tempura, sweet egg tempura, and Calamansi drinks. Would order everything again except maybe the sweet egg tempura (we were all on the fence about this one... did we like it... or not... and couldn't decide). We all liked the tempura bits and onions a lot. I'm gonna sound like an old person... but the music was too loud. I imagine it'll be great in the summer with the big doors open, and the music blasting... but the night we were there I just wanted a cozy meal with my little family, and the loud music and doors wide open were not giving me that vibe. I think this is going to be a solid take out option for our family. Parking is relatively easy at South Shore, the food is yummy, comforting, and relatively affordable, and soup noodles travel well. I was curious to try Muragame Udon, the new spot that opened in the old Panera Bread location at South Shore. First off, I have to say I'm glad something new moved in. The space is bright, clean, and a big upgrade from what used to be there. I don't miss the dark corners and perpetually sticky tables of Panera. Unfortunately, I didn't love the food. I ordered the beef udon, and it just didn't do much for me. The noodles and broth both tasted a little flat, like they were missing depth or seasoning. I kept wondering if I ordered the wrong thing, because other people around me genuinely seemed to be enjoying their meals. The service was very transactional. Not rude, just no greeting, no warmth. You walk through cafeteria-style and call out what you want as you move along. It was quiet when I went, though there were ropes set up outside like they're expecting big lines. Don't let that deter you if you're curious. Overall, I'm giving it a 3 out of 5. I probably wouldn't go back, but I wouldn't discourage others from trying it. If you like udon, it might hit differently for you. Just wasn't a win for me this time. read more

After visiting Japan recently, I got to try a bunch of different hot and cold udon spots so I was super excited for Marugame! One thing that stands out about Marugame Udon are their fresh and chewy udon noodles. I've tried the Nikutama and Kistune udon. Nikutama was the most flavorful and exactly what sukiyaki should taste like (sweet, umami). Kistune was on the lighter side with sweet inari. Great service and fast. For tempura, I like the shrimp and zucchini the most, but the pumpkin and squid are great too. I think the amount of seasoning is inconsistent, but the tempura sauce pairs well with it! Always crispy and hot. In Japan, tempura was on the lighter side and they always provided salt on the side. I love matcha and thought their iced matcha drink was great and not too sweet. I would come back for the Nikutama udon and matcha drink Ambiance is great for a solo diner or casual spot to catch up with family and friends. Restrooms are clean. read more

I've been waiting for the longest time for Marugame Udon to open...even my 6 year old saw the sign when it was under construction and said "Mommy! UDON! I love udon. We must go here." Super happy Marugame Udon opened! We stopped by for lunch on a Thursday and the line was relatively short. I got the Tonkotsu Udon and my husband got the Curry Udon. We also got the chicken karaage, shrimp tempura, sweet potato tempura, zucchini tempura. We were able to find seats right away too, which was a plus since it was chilly outside. Dug in right away and the food was delish! I've been to the San Ramon location before but this one was better. The udon was flavorful and hit the spot. The tempura beats the San Ramon location, hands down. Will definitely be back! Love this new addition to South Shore! read more

I was in the area and saw the much anticipated grand opening. Lines were fairly long but goes very fast at this point. There were giveaways for making a $20 purchase so lots of folks surrounding a second line for that. So I ordered on the app and took a nice walk around before picking up my order. Inside were plenty of seating and self service fountain machine for drinks. We got the tonkotsu udon noodles to go and once I had my first bite I knew we were in for a treat. The broth was very tasty, full of flavor. The udon was al dente and not dry at all. It came with 2 large pieces of char siu, which was kinda disappointing since I'm used to eating more protein, so adding on extras seemed to be necessary. I feel bad for writing this bc the workers are always sweet and kind but every time we come here we have gotten horrible stomach aches after w chills and everything, chicken katsu was bright pink on the inside on our first visit like it was undercooked (not sure if it's supposed to look like that, it also tasted just off in texture from other katsu I've had) and the beef both times in our udon just didn't taste like it was cooked right. but im serious on the stomach aches, we had to run home like our lives depended on it both times. read more

When ordering for pick-up/to-go, be sure to check your order. I ordered 2 Calamansi drinks, but got 1. They made me another one when I asked, but I should've checked everything. I don't think I got extra scallions and extra tempura flakes since I did not get as much compared to the Berkeley location. I ordered 2 soft boiled eggs but it seemed like it was the size of one egg. Waste of money on the soupy egg and could've been worse if I only got one drink. Would I come back? Probably not, I'll make the drive to Berkley who seem to be much more efficient and effective in managing to go orders. read more

Finally a Margumae Udon closer to home! The place still holds their classic aesthetics. Food was made fresh as always. The location is right across from Jamba Juice, physical activity class, and lots of other restraurnts. I also want to give a special shoutout to a staff member named Kristine (or Christine)--she had the friendliest and sweetest vibe! I originally asked for my order to be for dine-in, but I later realized I needed to leave soon. I felt bad even thinking about asking to change it to take-out, especially since I didn't want to hold up the line at the counter. You'll need to study the menu before you get to the counter because there are a lot of options. You can order the tempura options further down the line at the counter. I was recommended by a friend that a new Udon restaurant had opened in the south shore center. Easy to find parking. The menu is simple and the Udon was excellent. They have a large staff that runs the restaurant smoothly. Looking forward to going back and trying more of their menu. I love soup!!! Unlike the SF store, Employees in Alameda store are extremely polite, which gives me a good first impression. Udon is very well done, I ordered the simple one with fish broth, just few bucks only, got some tempura, filled me up easily. The cold udon tastes really great with green onion! My friends and I had a nice lunch yesterday at Marugame. We were really shocked that there was no line at around 12:45! This is the third Marugame that I've been to and every one was different. The one at Waikiki is the most popular in the world but with long wait of 30 minutes to 1 hour or more. Udon is the star of the meal as all the places had the same texture and taste that I hope for which is really good. They make their own udon and are served al dente that I look for in good udon. The sauce for the soup was the same as the other Marugame, which makes me think that they are premade and are distributed to all their stores. When walking up to a long counter, you tell the cook what you want and they will ask you what toppings you'd like. At the end of the counter, you choose your sides (tempura, gyoza, etc.) and help yourself. After paying, go to the condiment station for sauces and water. You take your tray and sit at a table of your choice and enjoy your udon or rice bowl. The place is really clean and all the helpers are nice and helpful. The music can be too loud so that we can't converse easily. I just wished they had more selections like the do in Waikiki store. I will go back for sure! read more

But since I was super excited to try this place and on my first time eating here with my boyfriend I got a teriyaki chicken bowl with rice and veggies the food was okay, but when I poured my veggies into my bowl there was a hair in it as soon as I noticed I went up to the front counter to tell them there was a hair on my food they tried to "play it off" by saying it was probably from the veggies a fried vegetable but it was clearly a facial hair, the workers had hair nets but no facial mask or facial hairnets which are required while working in the food industry. After that I lost my completely appetite. I got my refund but I probably won't ever eat there again. read more
