Spicy beef tomatama bowl, beef udon
    Justine W.

The food here is really delicious and very flavorful broth. Upon entering you wait in line and you first order the bowl you want then pass on to another worker to ask if you want any complimentary toppings. After that you are given a paper bowl to choose the variety of tempuras they had. We got the crabmeat tempura, shrimp tempura and zucchini. This place is more of a cafeteria style. After you pay and get your food, you find a seat to eat. They also had a section where you can get your tempura sauce and ginger. The beef udon and spicy tomato beef udon are great options. I would definitely be coming back!

I was at Stonestown, and since the weather was cloudy, I thought it would be nice to have some hot broth. When I visit a noodle restaurant, I expect the broth to be hot, not warm or lukewarm. I ordered the Beef Dashi Broth - Beef Served with sweet beef ($11.95). Unfortunately, the broth was only warm and not hot at all, which was disappointing. The beef was shredded beef, but it didn't really taste like beef. Next time I visit, I won't order the Beef Dashi Broth again.

Came back again and it was great Excellent everything!!! Good food, good service, good ambiance before a movie

Stopped in for an early dinner while at the mall. It wasn't busy, super quick, friendly, and delicious food. The broth is flavorful, meat tender, and noodles with good texture. Lots of seating inside and like the self serve area so you can get things at your leisure.

Marugame Udon first won us over on a trip to Oahu, where the line was literally out the door. After one bite, it all made sense. Their udon is incredibly fresh, chewy, and satisfying. I usually go for the tonkatsu variety, but honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the bowls since the noodles are freshly made and consistently delicious. Living in Denver means we don't get to Hawaii very often, so I was thrilled to discover they also have a San Francisco location. I make it a point to stop by whenever I'm in town, and my most recent dinner visit absolutely delivered. The service was impressively fast, even during a busy dinner rush, and the food came out hot and flavorful. The ambiance at the SF location is probably the weakest part. It's inside a larger mall complex, so it's not exactly cozy or memorable. But honestly, I could care less because the udon is that good. Already looking forward to my next trip to San Francisco so I can come back again.

I've been going to this location since it opened, and it is outstanding. During the pandemic, I ate a lot of delivery Marugame, and let me say that being in person is a million times better. When you can see the steam from the noodles escape the front door on a cold day, you know you're in for a comforting, cozy, and tasty treat. The udon is really good. The noodles are silky and smooth, and they also have a great chew to them. About 90% of the time, I get the Nikutama: the broth is deep in flavor, the egg is wonderfully poached, the beef is thinly sliced and sweet. When served hot and accompanied with the tempura crisps, green onion, and grated ginger, it's out of this world. I love making the perfect bite in a deep spoon of noodle, beef, egg, and toppings. The fried sides are all pretty good, and I think the tamago is particularly good. The only tough thing is the potential wait time and difficulty finding a seat, though I've found the line moves at a speed such that you can generally find a table where someone is leaving right as you've finished paying (if you're a group of 2 or by yourself).

Been a while since I had Marugame Udon and they had a lot of new dishes to try. The Bolognese Udon was interesting, not quite a favorite. It was definitely a pasta with udon noodles, it was good to try, but wouldn't order again. Also got the Kake with green onions, tempura flakes, and tempura sides. I chose the Pork Katsu and the Potato Croquette tempura. The pork was very tough and hard to bite off, but the potate croquette was tasty and would order again! Love that they make the udon noodles here!

This is always a go-to when we want some udon! My go-to is the nikutama and I always ask them to add green onions and tempura flakes (no added $!) It's self service so you grab a tray and tell them your order and they will place the bowl on your tray after. You can also pick what tempura you want after! I like the pumpkin and tamagoyaki.

TLDR: Excellent Udon and Tempura in a Quick Serve Cafeteria-style setting. I love the tempura and curry udon here especially. Line moves quickly. Backstory: Marugame Udon is a chain of Udon restaurants that started in Japan, but for us, we discovered it years ago while on vacation in O'ahu. Known as Marukame (but with a "K" in deference to local Hawaiian tradition) in Hawaii, Marugame Udon is best known for affordable delicious bowls of udon noodles made from scratch using flour from Japan. Fast forward several years, and we could not believe our eyes when Marugame Udon was opening shop right here in Stonestown Galleria. Marugame Udon has since expanded their menu from just udon & tempura, to also include rice bowls to address a wider variety of appetites. Walk up, and you'll typically find a longish line out the door around lunch and dinnertime, especially on the weekends. The line moves relatively quickly. Once inside, Grab a tray, study the menu and order up with the cook behind the counter. They make and cook the udon fresh right behind the glass. You are served cafeteria style, so once you get your bowl of udon or rice planted onto your tray, pick out some tempura items to go with it. Lots of different tempura items - freshly fried before you, including chicken and shrimp (my top 2 favorites) as well as vegetarian udon selections that are also good (zucchini, eggplant, etc) My favorite udon here is the curry udon, but you really can't lose with any of the udons here. I generally order a small curry udon and a couple of pieces of tempura. Yum! Once you reach the end of the tempura counter, pay up at the cashier, and find a table. Outdoor seating too, but hey.. it's kinda cold and breezy in this part of town most of the time, so take your pick. Verdict: All said, while this isn't a fancy place in the least, I enjoy coming here for the food. The service is courteous and fast and the udon and tempura is consistently good here.

Convenient location and the taste is always consistently good. Came here after movies and good the beef udon

I've been here multiple times since they opened. I would've given them 5 stars before but I'm taking a star off now since things have changed. What kept me coming back often before was the low prices, the unlimited self serve tempura bits, green onions, etc, but they took that away. I didn't like how the serving trays were all very wet and gross looking. And I wish the egg yolk was runny and not well done. Also, I wish the bowls were bigger for the smaller size. It's a struggle to eat when the soups filled to the brim, but please don't give less soup based on this comment lol. Overall I still like the fresh udon and I like that they've expanded the menu.

My favorite is the #5 creamy broth. Everything tastes fresh. The lines can be long but they move quickly. I've also tried the tomata cheese katsu which is also very tasty. The chicken katsu is extra crispy

Food was delicious! I'm usually not much of an udon person and didn't have high hopes, but I was pleasantly surprised! I got their classic clear broth udon which was satisfying and filling. The noodles were soft and chewy, and not tough or undercooked. The soup was very rejuvenating and perfect for a chilly day My partner got the beef tomatama which I believe is seasonal. The sliced meat paired well with the tangy, salty broth. We liked both noodles dishes and would recommend! They also have a la carte dishes you can grab yourself as you checkout which is very convenient. We got a side of fried pumpkin which was quite bland. I'm not sure if they purposefully don't season it but it was missing either some sugar or salt. They have a pretty spacious indoor and outdoor seating as well being next to the mall.

Will the origiris ever come back?? I miss it so much especially the mentaiko!!

What is the difference between ready to eat packaging option and the no option when trying to order delivery?

Do they still have the vegan udon:(?

Just went on 6/1/24, and had the vegan udon. It was delicious!

    Do they still have onigiri?

I wish! When I went 2 weekends ago, they didn't have it.

Is Marugame offering cold udon for takeout?

Yes they are. I'd actually ordered "hot" noodles but received cold instead recently. Check their website for options.

Do they have vegetarian options, as all the meat broths are fish or beef-based? Or when will the vegetarian alternative be back?

Yes they have dishes with no meat. The Kitsune is what I normally get when I go. It's udon noodles and tofu... And then I add plenty green onions to it.

Do any of the dishes contain dairy?

I was confused the first time too. If you order and pay online then when you enter, go to the left and there is a long table with pickup orders. Customer pickup is on the end nearest the register.

    yep they do!

    Is the kitsune udon vegetarian?

    Yes, they now have one.

Does anyone know if Marugame is selling all of their snack sides (chicken katsu, masubi)?

I was there a couple of days ago and bought sides of tempura and croquettes

    Do they have outside dining?

They have about 4 tables set up outside. Yes!

Do they have all the spam masubi and onigiris during this time? I would like some hand snacks, but don't want to drive all that way only to be told they're limiting their menu... *edit* they don't

No, I was there two weeks ago. They have chicken katsu sandwich's though.

Are they still open during SIP?

yes, take out only last week.

Hello Marugame! Do you have any *vegan options yet? What are they specifically? Past reviewers said your other branches have vegan options. This is NorCal, so I'm sure it will be appreciated by many including my friends! Thanks!

Yes they do! They have an Edamame Salsa Udon! Personally haven't tried it but heard good things about it!

Can the tonkotsu udon be non-spicy? (I.e. no chilli oil)

Yup! They add it at the end so you can tell them to hold off on the chili oil

    Do they accept Apple pay?

    yes, pretty sure they do.

    Any gluten item?

    No I don't think so

Everything -- from food to service, to ambience -- was EXCELLENT through and through. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by a wait staff immediately. We were seated at a bar height table as requested. And throughout the evening, the wait staff was helpful, courteous and attentive. They did not miss a beat in offering us water refill, checking on us, or changing our plates. Excellent service!! Between the three of us, we offered a variety of appetizer and dishes; what stands out is the quality of their ingredients, and the sophistication and perfection in their usage of spices, creating excellent and balanced flavors. * Spring Roll wrap - A must order dish. Perfectly fried spring roll with lettuce wrap and spiced dipping sauce. Excellent! * Clay Pot rice - I really like the clay pot rice here. They use Chinese sausage and the flavorful pork neck meat, over fragrant jasmine rice.. it was cooked for perfection and packed with flavors. Note, their clay pot rice does not come with crispy rice bottom, but just ask if you want it. ;) * Beef Tartare- excellent flavor and soft fresh beef tartare... so good! * Blue Shrimp Ceviche - another dish that highlights their culinary expertise. Sashimi- grade blue shrimp in their special sauce.. well balanced flavor and just perfect! * A highlight was definitely their sake and cocktail list... they have plenty of good drinks here. My default is their Lychee Drink and the blue bottle sake. Always a good choice and Le Soleil offers the perfect setting for great friends to gather and have a few drinks! A very happy evening dining at Le Soleil. We will be back very soon!!!

Water pitchers was refilled throughout. It did take a while for staff to pick up empty plate once we were finished with dishes since they dropped orders so quickly into service, but not a huge deal. Overall a nice spot for a modern twist on Vietnam cuisine, the chicken and beef were the stand out dishes for us, so give those a try if you decide to visit. Even before this most recent visit, I'd enjoyed intimate dinners here for its creative, Korean-Thai-inspired menu that always packed an impressive punch of flavor but, dare I say, the brunch might be even better. The steak sandwich was absolutely phenomenal, with the steak seasoned and cooked to perfection and pairing beautifully with the charred onion aioli, plus a side of expertly crisped smashed potatoes that were so addicting. The steamed mussels were sumptuous and packed with umami, and I loved the two large bricks of toasted sourdough focaccia that were perfect for sopping up every last bit of the delicious dashi broth. But the pièce de résistance was the custard French toast, which I can only describe as the love child of bread pudding and tres leches cake as it was crispy on the outside but uber moist on the inside, custardy, and simply divine. Por laos - I really liked it. Highly recommend if you want a twist of the typical spring rolls. Chicken satay - it's one of the best ones I have, especially from a restaurant at this price point. The chicken breast was on the slightly thicker side, which give us a meaty and satisfying satay. The meat was perfectly cooked and juicy and tender. And they served with the spot on satay sauce. I do wish we get more cucumber salad though. But that's more like my personal preference. Soft shell crab - this is the dish that really won us over. Not only they fried the soft shell crab to perfection, they used quality ingredient as well. (We had been in restaurants before where we got fishy soft shell crab - even after they were deep fried to death.). My kids always wanted to try soft shell crab and they loved it after having their first bit over here. I didn't expect to have this perfect soft shell crab here in a small Thai/Laotian restaurant. Yellow curry w/ chicken - fairly standard yet delicious. I do have to praise the staff for being thoughtful. I forgot to ask for mild when I placed the order. I was so worried that the curry will be too spicy for our table. But apparently the staff made the adjustment for us when they saw us coming with two young kids. Kudos for that! Pad see ew with beef - it's on the sweeter side. We got generous portion of beef in this economy! :) I think this place is a pretty good value. We left with a happy and full belly. It may not be the perfect spot for large parties but it's definitely the perfect spot for those who are in the area craving for authentic Thai/Laotian cuisine!

They do have an online waitlist, which is absolutely worth using before driving over. I can easily imagine busier days where the wait gets out of hand, and this will save you time and frustration. The space itself feels very cozy and familiar, almost like an at-home traditional diner, tucked right near the Castro. Nothing flashy or groundbreaking, but comfortable and very San Francisco brunch-core. Where this place really shines is the service. The wait staff was excellent and attentive throughout our meal. Water was refilled quickly, and it was always easy to get someone's attention without feeling ignored or rushed. That alone made the experience feel relaxed and pleasant. Food-wise, we ordered the bacon flight and pancakes. The bacon was fun to try, but overall the food landed in the "meh" category for me. Not bad, not amazing, just standard brunch fare that you can find at plenty of other spots around the Bay Area. Portions were solid, but for what you get, the prices felt a bit high. Personally, I would not go out of my way to return. There are several brunch places around the Bay that offer very similar menus and vibes under different names. That said, if the wait is short and you are willing to splurge a bit, it is not a bad experience by any means. Just do not expect anything particularly memorable on the food front.

We found a spot on a side street a block away. This Thai/Laos eatery was dimly lit with a cozy atmosphere. When we arrived, only a few tables were occupied, so we were seated quickly. They have a variety on the menu: starters, salads, noodle soups, pan fried noodles, stir-fries, seafood, vegetarian, curries, fried rice, specials, sides, & desserts. *** O U R P I C K S *** CHAMPA WINGS ~ sweet & spicy, dry pepper fried chicken wings. The wings were quite small, but we got 10 flats. Tasty, but not too spicy. Comparable to the wings you'd get from San Tung or Korean fried chicken wings. 4/5 CHAMPA SAMPLER ~ Lao sausages, fried rice ball salad, & fried spring rolls. Tasty generous platter! It comes with vermicelli noodles and lots of fresh lettuce and herbs so you can make lettuce wraps. Spring rolls were crispy and delicious. I think this was the highlight of our meal. 5/5 LARP LAO STYLE (Duck) SALAD ~ prepared with mint, onions, fish paste, cilantro & Thai eggplants. Alone, the duck is pretty salty. But eating it with the provided lettuce and herbs balanced the flavors and cut the saltiness. Unique and bold flavors. 4/5 PAD THAI ~ thin rice noodles, tamarind, eggs, bean sprouts, and chicken. Flavor was on point, but the noodles were a bit wet and overcooked. 3.5/5 GINGER FISH ~ battered catfish, minced pork, ginger, onions, bell peppers, and mushroom. This tasted more like a Chinese dish. The fish were filet pieces deep fried with a batter covered in a brown sauce. This dish tasted ok, but nothing special. 3.5/5 A few dishes stood out like the Champa sampler and Larp Lao style duck salad. We enjoyed our meal and we'll definitely make our way back when the craving hits!

They have a menu that goes beyond just your typical noodle soups - items ranging from Malaysian‑style curry laksa, spicy roasted duck ramen, to XO sauce dry noodles! We tried a few things and everything felt fresh and satisfying. The house special curry laksa had a rich, creamy broth with just the right amount of spice, and the duck dishes were especially good with tender meat and savory sauces that clung perfectly to the noodles. The small bites like spring rolls and dumplings were nice starters for our group of 4. The service was friendly and quick, with generous portions - exactly the spot we were looking for! I'll be coming back to try even more off the menu next time.

The spring rolls were really crispy and the sauce that they use on the side adds a nice sweetness to it. My favorite part of my meal however were the noodles. The noodles were flavorful and the duck was tender. I also loved how generous the portions are and the price is very affordable. If you're into affordability, generous portions, high quality noodles, and great service, I highly recommend checking this spot out. Try it out if you like. :)
