The line here took about 15+ min to get our food. The service is not really existent because you get everything yourself. Seating can be hard to find after you get our food. The udon was bouncy and freshly made. The broth is delicious. The meat wasn't tender as how I remembered it though. The seasoning made it really sweet for some reason. The food was fresh, but because of the time it takes to eat the udon with the broth, the udon gets really soggy. Somehow, they need to nit overcook the udon and realize that the udon is still cooking because of the warmth of the broth. The egg was nice and runny. I am still glad I tried it. I got the original creamy which is the most popular. I also got a side if fried chicken katsu and pumpkin. The texture was great. Both were crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The food here is really delicious and very flavorful broth. Upon entering you wait in line and you first order the bowl you want then pass on to another worker to ask if you want any complimentary toppings. After that you are given a paper bowl to choose the variety of tempuras they had. We got the crabmeat tempura, shrimp tempura and zucchini. This place is more of a cafeteria style. After you pay and get your food, you find a seat to eat. They also had a section where you can get your tempura sauce and ginger. The beef udon and spicy tomato beef udon are great options. I was at Stonestown, and since the weather was cloudy, I thought it would be nice to have some hot broth. When I visit a noodle restaurant, I expect the broth to be hot, not warm or lukewarm. I ordered the Beef Dashi Broth - Beef Served with sweet beef ($11.95). Unfortunately, the broth was only warm and not hot at all, which was disappointing. I've been going to this location since it opened, and it is outstanding. During the pandemic, I ate a lot of delivery Marugame, and let me say that being in person is a million times better. When you can see the steam from the noodles escape the front door on a cold day, you know you're in for a comforting, cozy, and tasty treat. The udon is really good. The noodles are silky and smooth, and they also have a great chew to them. About 90% of the time, I get the Nikutama: the broth is deep in flavor, the egg is wonderfully poached, the beef is thinly sliced and sweet. When served hot and accompanied with the tempura crisps, green onion, and grated ginger, it's out of this world. I love making the perfect bite in a deep spoon of noodle, beef, egg, and toppings. The fried sides are all pretty good, and I think the tamago is particularly good. The only tough thing is the potential wait time and difficulty finding a seat, though I've found the line moves at a speed such that you can generally find a table where someone is leaving right as you've finished paying (if you're a group of 2 or by yourself). read more

Living in Denver means we don't get to Hawaii very often, so I was thrilled to discover they also have a San Francisco location. I make it a point to stop by whenever I'm in town, and my most recent dinner visit absolutely delivered. The service was impressively fast, even during a busy dinner rush, and the food came out hot and flavorful. The ambiance at the SF location is probably the weakest part. It's inside a larger mall complex, so it's not exactly cozy or memorable. But honestly, I could care less because the udon is that good. Backstory: Marugame Udon is a chain of Udon restaurants that started in Japan, but for us, we discovered it years ago while on vacation in O'ahu. Known as Marukame (but with a "K" in deference to local Hawaiian tradition) in Hawaii, Marugame Udon is best known for affordable delicious bowls of udon noodles made from scratch using flour from Japan. Fast forward several years, and we could not believe our eyes when Marugame Udon was opening shop right here in Stonestown Galleria. Marugame Udon has since expanded their menu from just udon & tempura, to also include rice bowls to address a wider variety of appetites. Walk up, and you'll typically find a longish line out the door around lunch and dinnertime, especially on the weekends. The line moves relatively quickly. Once inside, Grab a tray, study the menu and order up with the cook behind the counter. They make and cook the udon fresh right behind the glass. You are served cafeteria style, so once you get your bowl of udon or rice planted onto your tray, pick out some tempura items to go with it. Lots of different tempura items - freshly fried before you, including chicken and shrimp (my top 2 favorites) as well as vegetarian udon selections that are also good (zucchini, eggplant, etc) My favorite udon here is the curry udon, but you really can't lose with any of the udons here. I generally order a small curry udon and a couple of pieces of tempura. Yum! Once you reach the end of the tempura counter, pay up at the cashier, and find a table. Outdoor seating too, but hey.. it's kinda cold and breezy in this part of town most of the time, so take your pick. Been a while since I had Marugame Udon and they had a lot of new dishes to try. The Bolognese Udon was interesting, not quite a favorite. It was definitely a pasta with udon noodles, it was good to try, but wouldn't order again. Also got the Kake with green onions, tempura flakes, and tempura sides. I chose the Pork Katsu and the Potato Croquette tempura. The pork was very tough and hard to bite off, but the potate croquette was tasty and would order again! I've been here multiple times since they opened. I would've given them 5 stars before but I'm taking a star off now since things have changed. What kept me coming back often before was the low prices, the unlimited self serve tempura bits, green onions, etc, but they took that away. I didn't like how the serving trays were all very wet and gross looking. And I wish the egg yolk was runny and not well done. Also, I wish the bowls were bigger for the smaller size. It's a struggle to eat when the soups filled to the brim, but please don't give less soup based on this comment lol. The noodles were soft and chewy, and not tough or undercooked. The soup was very rejuvenating and perfect for a chilly day My partner got the beef tomatama which I believe is seasonal. The sliced meat paired well with the tangy, salty broth. We liked both noodles dishes and would recommend! They also have a la carte dishes you can grab yourself as you checkout which is very convenient. We got a side of fried pumpkin which was quite bland. I've been to this udon shop many times while shopping around in the Stonestown area. On a Friday evening, the lines were pretty much continuous, but the turn around time for the tables were quick. I tried one of their most loved udons, their Nikutama Udon. The noodles were springy and thick and fresh, and the portion size was generous. i loved the crispy fried onions sprinkled on top along with the soft boiled egg. The sweet beef was also good and complemented the rest of the dish. However, the broth was a bit too salty for my taste. We did get samples of their calamansi and Pineapple Sunrise drinks while in line. The calamansi was pretty good, but I'm not a fan of the Pineaple Sunrise - it tasted a bit medicinal to me. I got a large Kitsune Udon (with all included toppings) along with cheese tempura and shrimp tempura on the side. I usually get the tamago tempura but I've never seen the cheese tempura so wanted to try that. Udon here is always solid quality, and the kitsune is so deliciously sweet and soft. U-don expect a cafeteria-style place to be consistently fulfilling with top tier craftsmanship, but Marugame hits! This Stonestown location is NorCal's first Marugame Udon, and so there were long lines in the first couple of years. These days, it's thankfully pretty chill with the same great quality and more side options, but less udon flavors. I've been able to try their entire menu since I used to live pretty close, as well as a few seasonal broth offerings. Parking at Stonestown is usually kind of annoying, but you'll eventually get it. Line up, take a tray, pick your udon (or rice bowl if you don't want udon at an udon restaurant), ask for complimentary tempura flakes and sliced green onions (this used to be self-serve in the past), pick any sides and tempura, pay at the register, and seat yourself. You get your own utensils, sauces, water, and such in the area near the end of the line. You also bus yourself when you're done. Quick, efficient, and easy. You're not going to find anything fancy here, but it's good ol' comfort food at a very cheap price in this economy, and especially Japanese food?! Yeah, that's why Marugame Udon is an easy 5 star local favorite (taste-wise, I do prefer other places, so affordability and accessibility are huge factors here). Where else can you get a bowl of freshly made noodles for $6 (used to be even cheaper)? Their udon noodles are most likely the best in the bay, with an amazing chew and thickness that's pretty hard to find. Their most popular flavor is the nikutama, which is sweet beef slices with caramelized onions atop a concentrated shallow broth, and an onsen egg. It's pretty flavorful but a bit too sweet and soy for me, so I prefer the other flavors. I think the curry version just tastes like curry soup - also not my preference as I like it more thick, and their chicken katsu is way too hard and dry. The tonkotsu style broth is a cute hybrid with udon in a soup base designed for ramen, and they've recently made the change to chicken-based broth, which was not an upgrade. If you like creamy, heartier soups, it's satisfying; their seasoned eggs used to be hard-boiled and sad, but their yolk game is getting better. I do like their soft and supple chashu. I personally am partial to the classic dashi broth or sauce udon, and add an extra tempura or two if I'm hungry (shrimp is probably the most solid choice, but to each their own!). As an aging adult, I'm usually full from the regular size but can tackle a large if ravenous, which is really just extra soup and udon. Marugame's seasonal flavors have been interesting, and I hope to see more unusual concoctions. They've done things such as broths flavored like tom yum, Thai green curry, and most recently a dashi mixed with some egg salad/tartar sauce topping that made it creamy, with some orange chicken thing going on. read more

I'll admit not the first time I've been here. This is my staple whenever I'm in town. I can shop for a couple of hours at Stonestown and when I'm exhausted and hungry I'll dive into Marugame Udon for an affordable, quick, tasty meal. I usually order the #10 kake udon and a kalamansi drink. Both are so delicious and satisfying. Many more choices of soups and tempura for your liking. The service is speedy even when the line is long. If I were a student at SFSU I'd be eating here at least 3-4 times a week. It's that good. There's an outdoor patio if you've got your pup with you. After our first experience at Marugame Udon on Oahu, I was pretty stoked that they opened a location at Stonestown Galleria. I finally got to check out this San Francisco mall locale on the evening of Friday, July 11, 2025. Located at the mall, there is plenty of free parking in the lot. Similar to its sister eatery in Waikiki, if you plan to visit and see no line, jump in right away as a long queue can easily grow out the door within a blink of an eye. This is exactly what happened to me when I arrived shortly before 7 PM on July 11. Wait time to get to the counter to order is not long, though. On the day of my brief visit, the venue appeared clean and tidy. Marugame is cafeteria-style self-service; grab a tray, tell the cooks on the other side of the counter what bowls (udon and/or rice) you are getting, pick up any tempura items you want as you traverse along the counter, and place your drink orders with the cashier when you pay. You carry all of your items to your table or to the separate counter where you can pick up sauces, utensils, etc. Similarly, if you dine in, there is a designated area for returning your dishes before leaving. Below are what we ordered for take-out: GYOZA ($4.49): A great price for five pieces of these crispy Japanese potstickers. To my pleasant surprise, they maintained their crisp by the time I got them home to eat. SHRIMP TEMPURA ($2.29): Good. I was happy that this piece did not become soggy by the time I got it home. PUMPKIN TEMPURA ($1.99): DJ enjoyed this. VEGAN BROTH TAN TAN (LARGE for $14.99): Yay for a fully vegan option! DJ got extra scallions and tempura flakes for this at no extra cost. He appreciated that they automatically packed the soup contents separately from the broth for to-go. CURRY NIKUTAMA (LARGE for $16.65): The sweet beef and soft-boiled egg were also packed separately from the curry sauce. The meat was a bit too fatty for me, unfortunately. Good thing that I ordered a side of Kitsune-Age for my bowl. Kitsune Age ($3.59) - Yummy! I gotta admit - I did not enjoy this take-out order nearly as much as when we dined in at the Waikiki restaurant...even though I ordered the same bowl there.
