A side store near the entrance, Marugame has quickly become a favorite of those visiting the mall to fuel up for their shopping trip, or the casual diner who wants something more hearty than what the Westfield Southcenter Mall Food Court can provide. When you enter, you are bombarded by the stunning open kitchen, ordering menu at eye-level, and food choices while you are orchestrated down the line when constructing your perfect meal at Marugame. Many affordable options are available for this very fast-casual, Japanese influenced restaurant. However, I'm hungry, so I pulled out my credit card, and started ordering. For me, I chose the Beef Udon, as well as the fried pork cutlet in curry sauce. Yummy! I also ordered a side of stewed veggies and a soda to complete my choices. You queue in a line as you enter the main door and order cafeteria style. Once you get your dish on a serving tray, you top it off yourself with green onions and tempura flakes to your liking. Then proceed to pick your accompanying sides before paying at the end and grabbing your own table. The tonkotsu broth paired well with the udon, with a solid pork chashu and soft boiled egg. Knocking off a star since the price for the tonkotsu felt steeper for what you get, especially for a fast casual setting. The simple kake udon is toddler-friendly and affordable for a regular size at $6.35. For the sides, the shrimp tempura is the way to go, while the tamago tempura and chicken katsu were bland without accompanying sauces. I did a takeout - and BOY it was quick! Ive had Marukame many times in Japan during high school days and this definitely brought me back! Price is higher compared to Japan (very fair) but taste was exactly the same and I enjoyed every bite of it! I wish the they had like a to-go ginger option, but I assume I forgot to stop by and check the counter where they offer spices and utensils. Ordered the Creamy Broth Udon Tonkotsu Style. This has creamy chicken broth topped with pork chashu and a seasoned egg. This is a great option for cold weather meals to warm you up. The broth is indeed rich and creamy with a lot of good umami flavor and the pork chashu is soft and melts in your mouth. The udon noodles had a nice bounce to them, satisfying and filling. They offer a lot of other add-ons for a few extra dollars if you have a big appetite like gyoza, cutlets, tempura shrimp, croquettes, and sausages. There are some complimentary toppings like sliced green onion, minced ginger, and crispy flakes. Staff are very nice and patient, the cooks do a good job of preparing the food in front of you as you walk through the meal line. Marugame Udon was introduced to me by a friend in LA when we visited. I didn't quite grasp the hype at the time but I've grown to appreciate it. Udon is fresh, fast-food style, and fairly affordable. Add-ons such as tempura can add up quickly, but aren't needed for a solid meal. Even if the line looks long, they're efficient and move quick. With the fast food style, there's not much service so be sure to bus your own table afterwards. Plenty of parking being the Southcenter Mall, and plenty of activities to do before or after. We finally got to try this place and it did not disappoint. We came during lunch time and it wasn't too busy. They have a large dining area so there was plenty of seats and it wasn't too loud. One of the most affordable, but satisfying meals in the area! I ordered my usual Kake Udon and Tamagoyaki tempura. Also grabbed a giant Imitation Crab tempura which I haven't seen at my usual location in LA. They do allow you to request fresh tempura if the kind you want isn't ready, but be prepared to wait 5+ minutes if you choose to do so. I ordered the Nikutama (sweet beef and soft boiled egg) Udon. It is definitely on the sweeter side and it was surprising. I didn't know how sweet it would be. I still enjoyed it. I loved the bouncy texture of the noodles. The broth was light and comforting. At the time, it wasn't full inside the restaurant, but it got pretty busy. Im happy to say that my friends and I finally made it to Marugame Udon, about a year after it first opened. For those who may be unfamiliar with Marugame, Marugame is a popular udon chain and this is their first location in Washington (their other locations are in California and Hawaii). Their Waikiki, Hawaii location, in particular, always has a line of tourists out the door and so I never got a chance to try it until now! Marugame keeps its menu fairly simple. They have 14 different udon and rice entree items including Nikutama (sweet beef with soft-boiled egg), Kitsune (tofu skin), Tonkatsu (pork), and Curry (both on rice or udon). They are best known for their NIKUTAMA UDON ($13.49 for regular size) and so that's what my friends and I ended up ordering. Marugame is a counter-style service and so you order your noodles (which they make right in front of you!) and then take your tray to go choose the tempura of your liking and pay at the end. Their tempura choices include jalapeño, shrimp, tamago, sweet potato, pumpkin, potato croquette, green bean, and chicken katsu. Each are priced individually. They also have green onion and tempura crunchies for free at the end in addition to self-serve tempura sauce and spicy pepper flakes. The NIKUTAMA UDON broth was super flavorful, sweet, savory, and umami. The noodles were cooked to perfection- chewy, slippery, smooth? and slurp-able! The beef was cut thinly, tender to chew, and really soaked up the flavors from the broth. The egg was creamy and cooked just right when stirred into the broth. The regular portion was also just right and I was definitely full by the end of it! The tempura was fantastic- nice and crunchy and not overly oily! My friends and I lucked out as we happened to get a batch of SHRIMP straight from the fryer- yum!! Between the SWEET POTATO and the kabocha PUMPKIN (both of which I love), the sweet potato was the clear winner. The pumpkin was cut too thick and was bland in taste. As far as the tempura sauce, the sauce was salty, slightly vinegary, and a little bit sweet. I like that it's served warm and that you can help yourself. The atmosphere is super casual. There is lots of seating, but the tables and chairs are packed together pretty tightly, so don't be surprised if your neighbor accidentally backs their chair into yours. The decor is very modern Japanese. Service is good and we got through the ordering line within 5-7 minutes (this was at 6pm on a Sunday). And the woman who was just putting the shrimp out, was nice enough to plop some right into our bowls! Note that you have to bus your table at the end, but there was a worker today who was clearing the bowls at the bussing station so we didn't have to clean our own bowls or sort trash from recycle. Not sure if that's normal routine or if she was just being extra nice, but it was a nice added touch to the service! Compared to U:Don (another chain in Seattle that I had multiple times throughout college), I can honestly say that Marugame is higher in quality and flavor. They make your dish in front of you and add the toppings you want and you take a tray if dining in for your bowl. I was very impressed and satisfied with my experience. Only major con was they did not have udon spoons available and only flimsy take out spoons not made for this dish. The menu is straightforward with different udon entrees or you can build your own udon bowl. You form a line where you place your order and then you go down the line to pick out tempura items for an additional charge and you can add free toppings, like green onions and tempura flakes. I ordered the curry nikutama, which came with tender, beef over handmade udon noodles in a curry broth. I added green onion, tempura flakes and purchased a tempura squid and sweet potato. I also opted to get the spicy paste, which the cashier offers you, along with a calamansi juice. What can I say? Marugame Udon is amazing. The udon noodles are legit, with that perfect texture of having a good chew and easy to slurp. The beef was tender and flavorful and loved the poached egg to mix in. I like spicy foods, so would recommend getting the chili paste for that extra oomph. The large bowl was huge; I couldn't finish it all. But they do have two sizes of bowls for smaller appetites. This was a fun place to eat. We muddled about figuring it out but that's on us. Cool Japanese eating experience, in stations, some they prepare for you and some you grab yourself. They provide everything you need, one way or another, tongs, containers, take-home boxes, and it's really fun to watch them make the udon right in front of you. Like my husband said, we don't even have to leave Seattle to have great Japanese food. We got the udon #1 most popular and the katsu chicken curry with rice. Both were delish, very satisfying. Fresh udon noodles with really tasty broth. Service is great but as a first timer, it was a little confusing to order. It ended up being fine but some more guidance would've been nicer. It's open seating but there were plenty of seating for a weekend lunch. read more
