Mary Lou's is a true gem. My fave are the cake donuts which are denser and not like donuts I have had at other places. And these donuts are pretty cheap! I think most are about 60 cents per donut. We came in really close to closing one time and they were all half off for 30 cents. We got six donuts for $2.15! read more

I don't really understand the considerable local hype about this place. Their cake donuts are fine, but, to me at least, indistinguishable from many of the mediocre chain donut places like Dunkin. Their apple fritters are my favorite donut here; they're a step above average but not anything mind-blowing. And their yeast donuts like the plain glazed are just not that good. This place is an absolute treat. Their doughnuts are fresh, the milk is cold and I've yet to taste anything more delicious than their English glazed crueller. You might have to fight a trucker for a seat at the counter, but it's worth it. My only complaint is that their jelly filling is too sweet and occasionally they go heavy on the frosting but that might be an issue of personal taste more than anything else. Whenever I travel I try to find a good donut shop, and Mary Lou Donuts is perhaps the best in all my travels. Its that good. On a quiet street with not much traffic on a summer morning, this place has almost every parking spot taken. The atmosphere is awesome: an old A-frame hut, a tiny 3-sided counter filled with the half-dozen regulars having a good time, the sound of the dough machine clicking, and a waitress at the register who called me "honey." Did I mention the awesome donuts? I had the best chocolate cake I've ever eaten, and a great custard-filled. Can't believe they cost as little as they do. I used to go past this place quite often whenever I wanted to give my car a spin on the less policed US 231 south so that's why probably I never stopped at this curiously shaped shop till a friend who was with me in the car asked me if I had ever tried the doughnuts at this place. I made a mental note to do this and filed it away when 2 days ago I chanced upon that very same favorite activity of giving my car a little push... To my delight, a mom and pop shop!! I went in and a few regulars were sitting there and chatting (mostly senior people). I ordered a few huge doughnuts and when I say huge I mean *HUGE*...One doughnut+coffee is easily lunch!! To my surprise I paid about half of what I was expecting them to cost!! Just one word...they are amazing!! freshly baked, delicately topped and filled with that feeling of goodness when the world is a nice place and all worries can be forgotten for a few moments... I CAN NOT believe the new owners totally ruined the whole place. I had gone there for 42 years and they had the best donuts I have had in my life. I used to tell everyone they have not had good donuts if they hadn't been to Mary Lou's. Now the donuts are greasy and make you feel sick. The shop looks like a tacky candy store. They just ruined everything that made Mary Lou's what it was for so long. I was looking for a good bakery in the area. I had to try their donut after reading other yelpers' great reviews. Yes, their donuts are good priced and delicious. Only complaint- They close at 5pm. The donuts are incredible. The building IS small, but the quality of the product is worth the cramped quarters. The French Crullers will make you believe in God. My wife loves the apple fritters and then there's everything else that I never buy because I can't get passed the French Crullers. Just moved to Lafayette and was told to try Mary Lou's. They were great, in California doughnuts are like contraband so, they a nice treat. The only two problems, the counter help is lacking in customer service skills. Actually pretty rude, I was in town less than a week and they expected me to know what I wanted. Also, the cream filled ones I got, someone used regular sugar instead of superfine and they were gritty and that was irritating to eat I threw them away, felt like I was chewing tiny pebbles. But overall, would def try again, just not any cream filled :) read more

The best place in Lafayette for donuts. There is a reason that they have been in business for so long and always have a line; fresh, tasty donuts that always satisfy your sweet tooth! The inside is pretty small, but they do have bar seating if you prefer to enjoy your selection there. For people on the go, they are fast with moving through the lines and even offer drive thru service if you don't want to get out of your car. I have been a student at Purdue for 3 years now and have finally made it out to Mary Lou's. I wish I had sooner as these are quite literally the best donuts I have ever tasted. So fresh, melt in your mouth flavors. And they are cheap!! A dozen was $7.25. I recommend the pumpkin - my favorite. Also the blueberry cake and apple fritter. I love Mary Lou Donuts. I grew up on Long Island until I was almost 21, where there was a bunch of other donut places and then I moved out here, where there aren't as many. I'm not a big donut eater, but Mary Lou's is definitely the place where everyone goes on Saturday mornings. The only thing that is a little inconvenient, is that they don't take credit or debit cards. It's a small little place, but they make good donuts, good prices & the ladies that work there are really nice. I just got donuts this morning and paid $7 for a dozen. Definitely worth a try. And if your going on Saturday, since they aren't open on Sunday, make sure you get there early because there is usually a line and they do run out of stuff sometimes. read more

First off, the donuts here are great. Hands-down the best donuts I've ever had. So why the 2-star review? I JUST got home from taking my kids to Mary Lou's, which we've done now for a few months on Saturdays. I walked in and my kids sat down and I got in line to order. But the girl NEVER even acknowledged my presence. There was a guy behind me who ordered 2 dozen donuts and I stood right at the counter the whole time he was ordering. I thought she made an honest mistake and that she would realize that I was waiting to order, but no, she did not. After the guy ordered his 24 donuts, another young lady came in and guess what happened? I was IGNORED and this young lady was waited on instead. There is no excuse for this. I was standing right up against the counter! Right beside the guy who ordered the 2 dozen donuts. It's not like I was just waiting at my seat or something. Even if the girl taking orders thought I had already ordered or something, she should have asked why I was still waiting through a 2 dozen donut order. So I got my kids and I left. Thanks for ruining our Saturday tradition with your lousy service. My kids really look forward to this, so I hope someone from Mary Lou's reads this and talks to the young girl who was working the front at about 11:10 a.m. on Saturday, May 12. Some seriously good donuts. I have a hard time choosing between here and Flour Mill Bakery in Rossville. The apple fritter is amazing, but will also feed a family of four (or five) so prepare yourself. The only reason I'm not giving Mary Lou's a five star rating is because their pricing, though inexpensive, it is confusing. Also, they do not accept credit/debit cards here. This place is small, quaint, and not very well lit. The being said, you be a fool to ignore it. This seems to be the local morning hang out for some of the older Lafayette residents as the counter space us usually very full of older gents with their coffee and newspaper. While Mary Lou 's does not accept credit cards, you can probably dig out enough change to purchase a donut or two. The donuts are very inexpensive, but they're also high quality and varied. There is a drive thru if you're in a hurry, but there is no official menu board. So if you want to try something new you will need little assistance. I liked this place when I lived in Lafayette. I never took it for granted. But now that I have lived elsewhere for almost two decades, I appreciate its greatness even more. Mary Lou Donuts is a must have for any donut lover. Yes things have changed since the new owners took over, but that should be expected to some degree. Their apple fritters are absolutely amazing, always have been, and at $2 each a mega bargain (yes they were $1.20 under the old owners but I'm not sure how they made money at that price)!
